So all we have to do is move Deng and Clarkson while getting nothing in return? Do you realize how ridiculous that sounds? Unless Ball or Ingram is attached that isn't happening. Pelinka and Magic can want to sign two max players, but they still have to abide by the CBA. Enjoy the fantasy.

They could and should also use other assets such as future first round picks if these two are the deal they seem to be.

I could see a trade similar to the Mozgov trade. We send out a young player, pick or both along with Deng. We get hopefully another pick and whatever matching salary that is required by the CBA.

Next year, 2 years of Deng should be much easier to move than 3 years of Mozgov. Keep in mind, we did pay for a year of BroLo as well. Even as a salary dump, and for as much as the front office has antagonized DLo, I don't think they throw him in if it's just for a pure expiring contract, at least not without asking for more back. Also factor leverage into play. The Lakers had to move Mozgov in order to be in position to sign 2 maxes. Right now, they might not have the space outright, but if Lebron and PG both decide to join, and 29 franchises together decide "(bleep) the Lakers, nobody help them", we're still going to be able to get it done. That's why when we're trying to unload a 2 year contract, we'll be able to do so for market value for probably two late first rounders. People won't be able to hold us hostage for more, because we can always walk away from the table. We would like to trade Deng rather than stretch him, because that would allow us to keep Randle. Otherwise, we let Randle walk. It makes no sense to trade Randle to trade Deng's contract, because the only reason to trade Deng's contract over stretching is to keep Randle.

Or we could wait till two max free agents commit before we do anything of that nature. This season shouldn't deal with any trades that involve sending out any young talent. Because it's pointless to clear cap when 1) We're gonna have at least ONE max slot this off-season even if we don't do anything, and 2) There's no reason to give up any young talent before ANY kind of max talent commits, because they we have space and nothing to show for it while also losing talent, and we've been there far too often as of late.

Randle will be a RFA, he wouldn't be involved. It would have to be another young player on a cheap contract.

Randle sucks, there's simply no way around it. Sugarcoat it all you want but he's a PF who can't defend nor shoot. He has a negative impact on both sides of the floor. Potential is key here so we'll see what he brings this year but so far he sucks.

Who doesn't suck on this team? Almost everyone has a negative impact on a losing team. Just wondering who you actually like apart from a guy's potential.

With Grade A analysis like that, I'm surprised you haven't gotten a job writing articles for that Lake Show Lyfe site.

Hmm let's turn it back around to Randle... with seven degrees of Julius Randle

Julius Randle played all 5 positions in high school

Thus was touted as one of the better up and coming point forwards in the league

drawing comparisons to

LeBron James!!

Who Coach K compared
Julius Randle to!

True story as well, Coach K actually described the role he had for him at Duke being that of a point forward and essentially using him the way they'd used LeBron on Team USA.

It's very fortunate that he went to Kentucky, because if Coach K had kept Randle on the path of his style in high school and worked on his point forward game as a primary role at Duke alongside Jabari Parker at the 3, then Randle may not have fallen to us at 7.

I can't tell if the intent of some of these posts is to improve his trade value. With what Julius has done so far along with the big contract he is probably going to command, I don't think the Lakers are planning to hold onto him.

Basically it's gonna take a 20/9/4 season from Randle for the Lakers to choose him over another additional max player.... I think if his hard work in the off season pays off he might reach those numbers or in the least get close to those stats.

The thing is they don't have to. They only need to have enough to fit his hold under the cap. That's the difference in needing $30M or $12M. It isn't Randle vs. various max players. It's whether or not you want to lose Randle or a collection of other Lakers to have enough cap space to sign two max free agents. Because if Randle does have a good season (something like 16/10/4 with improved shooting and defense) you can add two max players plus keep him. But it will cost you future picks and some other players will need to go instead.

The Lakers players are competing against one another, and that began once Russell was traded. They have gone all in on the cap space plan. Unless KCP or Brook have an absolutely monster season and the Lakers decide to hold on to them instead of going after a second max player the question will be who goes to clear up cap space and I think it could be anyone on the roster. KCP and Lopez are almost certainly gone though unless the Lakers can get them to take big pay cuts. Clarkson isn't a bad contract but either him or Randle (and possibly both) will be gone. If Randle has a good season though he would likely be the best player they could have with $12M in cap space, so the honus is really on him to go out and prove that he deserves them going over the cap to sign him next summer or to throw signals to indicate that he will take the qualifying offer. If he doesn't then they likely move him.

Personally, I'm expecting him to come back and show a similar level of improvement to what he showed last season which would make him worth holding on to. The ball is in his court though. If he isn't improved the Lakers have a couple of other decent young power forwards in Nance and Kuzma that will make it easier to move him.

Hopefully you are right, it would be nice to keep Randle and also add multiple stars, assuming he has a break out season.

Phenomenal pod! I learned a lot! Now I actually know the correct pronunciation for Amoila's name lol

Hearing him talk about what they worked on with Julius has me hyped for the season! I didn't realize how limited the strength & conditioning coaches are during the season since it's more about preservation at that point.

I also would love to be a fly on the wall when him and Gunnar finally speak

There's nothing much to say. The only NBA skill he brings is rebounding and that regressed.

1. rebounding
2. grab and go (compromises defenses on transition)
3. quick feet
4. rugged physicality that roughs up defenders
5. passing (can be a really good distributor if he wants to).

Yes he weaknesses, but that's par for course for young players.

This interview makes it hard not to get excited about Randle this season. Will be interesting to see the results relative to what his trainer said.

A Randle who is the best conditioned player on the floor would be a sight to see. I'm not sure that can be accomplished in just one summer, but really pumped to see if it can. The largest question to me centered around how much of a deficit has Randle been playing with? Flipping that around, the question asks how much improvement in his conditioning can he actually achieve before hitting his body's max potential? It sounds from the interview that Randle was leaving a lot on the table. If he's made up that deficit, it could really mean huge improvements in his game.

Yup I agree. I said it a long time ago, randle came into the NBA built like a football player. Those bulky muscles are good for short and powerful burst but you're gonna fatigue easily. Sure he's a beast in the paint but he's gonna get gassed easily. its similar to what happened to mcgreggor in his fight against mayweather, dude looked like a beast for 4 rounds, but eventually got gassed.

Julius has done a great job transforming his body, but that transformation didn't begin this past summer. He's been working on his endurance since he got to the NBA and he's made improvements the last two seasons. This season we will be the icing on the cake for the kid. i believe we're going to see a whole different randle this season. He's gonna be lebron-esque...maybe not numbers wise but the way he moves on the court and gets to the rim with ease. Chase down blocks and incredible motor that can be sustained.

^Well, Randle may have been working on it, but, according to his trainer, he came to him with a higher BMI that most. In other words, Randle was more out of shape than many who start the process. As was explained, this is why Randle shed pounds so quickly and you noticed such a huge difference. Seems, regardless of what he did in the past, Randle was a bit behind. However, again, that could be a good thing because it means that he's still capable of that much more improvement on the floor as well.
