Quote:
Christmas is coming early for Kobe Bryant — the Lakers are planning to retire his jersey before the Warriors game on Dec. 18 … multiple sources tell TMZ Sports.

The Lakers aren’t officially acknowledging it — but the team sent a letter to Lakers season ticket holders advising them to “hold on to your tickets for the game on Dec. 18” for a “special event.”

We’ve made some calls and everyone’s saying the same thing … it’s Kobe’s big night.

Not a season ticket holder but there is a thread speculating about the event. And yes they got the letter.

Putting up both numbers wouldn't look right. Besides, he ditched #8. They should hang #24 but not let anyone wear #8.

Someone said that in that other thread as well. But we actually beat GS at home each of the last 2 seasons.

Retire 24. Then make the statue with #8 of him pointing upwards after 81. Immortalize both.

what's wrong with retiring both:

#8:
3 titles
All-Rookie Second Team (1997)
Slam Dunk Contest Champion (1997)
Scoring Champion (2006)
Eight-time NBA All-Star
All-Star Game MVP (2002)
Four-time All-Defensive First Team
Two-time All-Defensive Second Team
Four-time All-NBA First Team
Two-time All-NBA Second Team
Two-time All-NBA Third Team

#24
2 titles
Scoring Champion (2007)
Four-time NBA All-Star
Two-time All-Star Game MVP (2007, 2009)
Four-time All-Defensive First Team
Four-time All-NBA First Team
NBA Most Valuable Player (2008)
Two-time NBA Finals Most Valuable Player (2009, 2010)

Can anybody argue either of those career doesn't deserve jersey retirement or HOF entrance by itself?

Seems really soon to be doing this after his retirement. Surprised to see it so soon, but should be an awesome moment! Hoping they retire just a single jersey and keep our wall of fame classy. Agree with the other poster... retire 24 and put the Kobe statue with 8 from the 81 pt game.

That would be a day of days to be on site. Should be a grand celebration. It's rare company up there in those rafters:

Chamberlain
Abdul-Jabbar
O'Neal
Worthy
Johnson
Wilkes
Baylor
West
Goodrich
Hearn

and now, Bryant.

That altitude is league-best, IMO; it represents the highest standard of accomplishment in sports anywhere.

It's be awesome to make him the only Laker (or any great) to have 2 jerseys by the same team retired.

It'd be a special distinction that he deserves.

Seems rather silly to not retire 8 while not allowing anyone to wear it. If you're not gonna let anyone wear it, just retire it.

Sillier than putting two jerseys in the rafters of the same player?
