Taking less money?
Hopefully it was due to the Lakers saying that they're not guaranteeing playing time.

That would be the most logical explanation imo, there is just too much of a logjam here. If clarkson was traded, then shabazz could take on 6th man and probably do pretty well and get paid next summer. Oh well, a nice to have player but not a big deal.

Looking at his pictures seems like the 7-8% bodyfat part would be a rough one for him. Too many Fatburgers?

1 thing that is great in being a Laker fan is that a lot of the moves we make comes out of the left field, It seems like the next player we acquire or sign will be someone we haven't talked about much...

Shabazz back to Minny. Smells like a wink-wink make-good deal w/ them retaining his Bird Rights. He probably knew he was a 1-year rental for us with no long-term prospects.

Wink wink may also happen with Brook Lopez IMO in 2018.

Or we do the obvious and just sign someone that we invited to training camp...

I think most of the interest was from Shabazz's agent.
The Lakers are one of the few desireable teams that still have their room exception available - according to an article I read a couple of weeks ago, most of the other teams that supposedly had expressed "interest in shabazz" only had the vet's min..
I'd suspect this is also the reason that DWade or his team was floating the idea that he'd like to play in LAL. DWade's team knows that, by the time they finish negotiating the buyout, all that'll be left is vet minimum's someplace...

both of these sound less like LAL was really all that interested and more like those players weren't getting many calls and wanted to spark interest with the teams that could pay them the most coin.

or we could just hold onto the cash and see who becomes available at the trade deadline too

I'm interested to see how the guys come back. Obviously Randle has been the most publicized but I want to see how zubac, deng, clarkson and the others from last season hit that threshold.

Agents do use the Lakers to raise the value of there players but the Lakers ended up with KCP even though Brooklyn could have offered him a long term deal, sometimes players do want to play for the Lakers.

You got paid Russ. Hook the Lakers up with a discount.

I hope ( unlikely ) that LeBron tells Wade that he can sign with Cleveland but won't promise Wade that he's gonna stay in Cleveand. creating some doubt from Wade to go to Cleveland.

Why does that matter? He would sign a 1-year deal regardless if with us or Cleveland.

True, my point is that Cleveland can go shove it, I hope Wade chooses us over them just to create more drama on us getting LeBron and rising our playoff chances next year.

WB signs his 10 year extension with Jordan brand.

OKC's supermax extension sits there collecting dust.

Hmm.

Could WB and/or PG13/LBJ be angling for LA next?

All 3 on the Lakers. Or all three on the Thunder. I'd think the Lakers lineup has more promise due to cheaper guys like Lonzo and BI.

But any lineup with these 3 Nike guys would be dynamic.

Neither could afford all 3 so it is extremely unlikely.

My gut tells me we might actually be turning down one of these guys this summer.

OKC's trade for PG was the best trade they could have made but simultaneously the riskiest. 2 decent players for one great one... deserves applaud. But, Westbrook now will wait to see what PG does. If/when PG bounces, WB is also out. There'd be no incentive for him to stay in Oklahoma without George there too. Only chance they stay is if they make the WCF and were actually a threat to GS-- which I don't see happening and I think Houston is a better team as might be Denver, Minny, and SA. There entire franchise for the next 10 years is in the hands of PG's decision.

Maybe LeBron decides to say and then then we get PG and WB. Or maybe LeBron wants to play with WB without discount. Maybe LeBron knows PG is the better fit... so much to look forward to.

There are no teams that can afford all three next summer getting paid their
respective Max salaries.

Yep.
That's why I won't be saying "max" money.
I'm just saying we can afford all three.

You are optimistic that all three will sign for an average starting salary of $20.5 million or whatever the spreadsheet shows they need to sign for to make everything fit.
