Trade him. The goal remains 2 max FA space and we need to clear his salary

My hope is that Deng surprises everyone, as Nick Young did last year.

And even then Young still had no trade value. It's a nice dream, though.

The difference is that Deng is already known in the NBA, I have no idea what happened to him last year but comparing Young to Deng is disrespectful Deng was once seen as a top notch defensive player and he was a multiple all star for a reason.

That's easy- trade him. You trade him at the absolute first opportunity. The very second. If you give the team that's willing to take him more than a few seconds to think it over, they'll probably change their mind You jump on it as quickly as possible.

Not sure if that's going to happen. Deng has been quiet all offseason not even sure what he's been up to. I think he's done, hopefully he proves us wrong

You still have to make salaries match so you then have a salary commitment to a player other than Deng.

Better in general for him. If he comes into this season in shape and plays halfway decent like we expected him to do last year he'll be a good addition to what we're doing and a solid vet presence.

Good for him. When I saw the thread was bumped I thought it was just more bashing. Nice to see something positive for a change. Thanks.

He looks good

Did he play at all in the team Africa games?

I know he was named captain but not sure if he actually played.

Nope, Deng did not play. He had outpatient surgery to repair an offseason pectoral injury in May.

Begrudgingly, I agree with you. We can be critical of Deng's play, and the Lakers giving him that contract. But Deng has a great reputation as a professional, a teammate, and as a human being.

Having said all that ... this is a basketball forum, so as long as he's stinking it up on the court for us, he's pretty much fair game.

I liked this photo here: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DKm35ajV4AAZNFv.jpg

It shows, Deng is still part of the plans. I know he was a big disappointment and his contract is terrible, still I believe he has an important role to play this year with this young team - on and off the court. He will never be the main guy, but he can be very useful.

Yes, I hope we can trade him by the end of the season to open space for 2 Max, but I wouldn't write him off just yet.

There you go, I said it!

Deng worked on his shooting all summer.
Has a huge chip on his shoulder.
I expect an efficient year from him.

Yup, sounds like he focused on shooting all summer. We do need quality defenders, so he should get some minutes this year. And, hopefully all the rest last season helped him recover some from his Thibs years.

It was good to hear him interviewed- he was such an enigma after the fist couple of weeks. I always like him as a player because he took pride in playing both ends of the floor. Sure we overpaid for him, but if he can be close to how he was in Miami, he is a good player.

Deng looked like he quit on his teammates. He was nowhere to be found when he was benched last year while Movgov was out there supporting them.

Deng is done! He will get no playing time because we are not tanking. We are stuck with him and anyone who dreams of trading him are going to be very disappointed. Dung does provide veteran leadership, and you can't put a price on that.

Not ready to write him off as done yet. Still think he can and will contribute on the court this season. I remain optimistic he bounces back from a bad year anyways.

I guess it depends on your expectations for him. You have to separate the contract and trade speculation with what he contributes on the court, in practice and as a mature leader on those long road trips. The young roster can benefit from his professionalism for this season.

It will be interesting to see if he can give 15-20 quality mpg. Should be reliable bench player. Assuming Ingram is the starter at about 28-30mpg again. There will be mpg available to him if he earns it. Play some defense and hit some 3s consistently would go a long way to helping this team win some games.

Well, he can certainly do no worse. As the pro he always had been, the stink egg he laid last season should hopefully awaken him because he was, by previous standards, a joke. And that's because dude showed up to camp like he was over it and decided to mail it in after getting paid. He tried working his way back into shape but the damage was already done and he never recovered. Nowhere to go but up.

If Deng can rise to respectability, to say nothing of actually putting up the kind of stats you expect from a veteran $18 million dollar a year player, it will be one of the biggest comebacks of a player in NBA history.

I'd be over the moon if he put up 10 points 7 rebounds and showed improved attitude.

Deng does provide experience when it comes to concepts like helping the helper on defense, or how to keep spacing there on offense. That said, he's a shadow of his former self, and his best position these days is in a slot shared by Randle, Nance, and Kuzma.

He's got a lot to prove in training camp if he wants to stay in the rotation. And i think he has zero chance of being traded this year, whether or not he gets playing time. We might have to wait one extra year for the second leg on that 2 max plan, either that or give up way too much to dump him.

Edit: or stretch the last $36M of his contract of course if we absolutely have to.

I think he is gone next year regardless. Probably our only chance of trading him is attaching a significant asset, possibly even Ingram, to find a trading partner. Most likely he is a buy-out, but pray for a miracle.
