time to plant ganja instead.

I think the ganja plant is the official tree of los angeles, not the palm tree.

Most of them are full of fruit rats. I used to watch them walk from the palm trees by the phone and electrical lines to my neighbors roof when I lived in San Gabriel.

I love plants.

They all have their place where they need to be.

Palm trees need to be as far from LA as possible.

You know what trees I hate? Cyprus trees. They should be in bleepin Cyprus. Also detest eucalyptus trees. They should be in mother bleepin Australia. I will help you burn some palm trees down if you reciprocate the gesture. Let's do this thing. The people above us, they'll never understand.

There are over 10,000 miles of damaged/destroyed sidewalks and streets throughout LA because of these tree's that should have never been planted here in the first place. Costs millions to constantly fix and repair the damage each year and the city is decades behind on it.

Chopping down all those nuisance tree's would be a blessing but the people have grown far too attached to them.

To be fair, the sidewalk problem has nothing to do with non-native trees. There are plenty of trees that are native to the area that cause the same problem.

The problem was the idea of planting trees on the small parkway between the sidewalk and the street in the first place. ANY medium to large size tree is going to uproot the sidewalk when it meets maturity and beyond.

Yes, definitely some native ones too. Chop em all down and replant with trees that won't cost us millions every year for decades.

Although, I do admit they made great BMX speed ramps on the sidewalks and asphalt back in the 80's.

Still, just a horrible lack of foresite by our previous city planners.

Agreed. We should get rid of all the things that didn't used tto belong in LA. Let's start with other people's water. Should take care of both issues...

I like the trees as a part of California ambiance. However, in certain sections of the city they do create a problem.

In less affluent areas the palms dry and fall onto autos on the street. I lived on a street that had that problem. I called the city to have a crew come and trim the trees. That was over 2 years ago. I've called on numerous occasions only to have someone tell me the crews are overwhelmed. Yeah, they spend their time sitting in parks and drinking beer.

Palm Trees are part of the In and Out logo. They also have their signature X palm trees outside every In and Out. I don't see Palm Trees being gone from California although I do forsee a huge reduction in them due to the die off.

They just need some damn water every now and then and they will be fine. My neighbor has two dead canary palms, along with most of the other plants in his yard- never waters ever. You can water trees even with the drought restrictions, it is just lawns that you can't water.

Trees help cool the landscape and help with water retention, even palm trees.
California Fan Palms actually make quite a bit of shade, especially when grouped together, and they are perfectly adapted to our environment. Not sure why we need to plant all of the other varieties that are not adapted to our climate.

the problem is in the water. they have a bacteria in the water that causes fungus that's killing our palm trees.

Water isn't a nuisance that provides NEGATIVE environmental benefits. Palm trees have an abysmal environmental impact in the negative, dreadfully less canopy coverage compared to nearly any other tree for the amount of resource it consumes and dumps out.

Spreads disease to other plant life, causes damage to property at a much higher frequency and fosters parasitic insects & rat infestations and yeah, again, sucks up our precious water resources at outrageous levels.
Additonally they are CAM photosynthesis so they hardly even produce oxygen, pathetic and useless!

Severaly negative enviromental and biological impacts vs 'oh they look nice in pictures.'

Lots of trees are dying in California, that is part of the reason forest fires are becoming more dangerous. There are beetles killing them from the inside and and they offer little resistance to the fires.

Chestnut blight wiped out almost all of the native species. That came from an introduced fungus from foreign trees. Chestnut flooring comes from reclaimed lumber now, barns and such. Beware foreign tree influence.

It is true, but the beetles usually can only kill tress that are under distress from lack of watering. If the tree is healthy and properly watered, its sap kills the beetles. If the tree did not get any supplemental watering during the drought, they can't make enough sap and they get overwhelmed by the beetles.

I have lost no trees during the drought. I let me lawn die, but I continued to prune and water my trees. They are all healthy and happy. I have all native trees: sycamores, palo verdes, engleman and live oaks. Native trees are great, they just grow and grow and need just a little extra water and pruning.
