Agree with many of the posts. Our team D is horrendous. We do have some guys who hustle and help out (covering some territory), but for the most part we have LAZY defenders (I will not name names so I don't upset fans who have favorite players). to complicate matters, our lack of outside shooting and guys who can create their own shots will make it difficult running a half court offense. That being said, I still think this team will be competitive and I can give a rats azz what they do in the preseason.
Luke is in a tough spot because he can't sit a couple of players because it will sink their trade value. The difference between some of our starters and our bench is not much, and normally, I would expect Luke to make players EARN their minutes (and nobody has a scholarship). |

But the defense (or lack of it) is the big problem, and the tougher to change problem. _________________ “These GOAT discussions are fun distractions while sitting around waiting for the pizza to be served.”

It's pre-season and we are easily a bottom 10 team. We should temper our expectations. Obviously we have a lot of problems. That's understandable at this point.
We are a young, inexperienced organization from top to bottom. We are rebuilding. It is often a painful process. This is what it looks like.
Enjoy the ride..... GO LAKERS!! |

I have watched some other projected bad teams....Brooklyn, NYK, Phoenix, Orlando....good news is NYK, PHX and Orlando looked as poor as we looked in my opinion....and i think we have more on the roster than those teams to improve. Then there are several other bad teams I have yet to see play this season. |

KCP doesn't look like an $18 million per year player to me.
What am I missing about this guy?
I know it is early pre-season, but Lanny is close to hitting the panic button. _________________ Love, Laker Lanny |

KCP pretty similar to JC to me this preseason $18mil+$12mil = max $
But we'll see how regular season goes, many new pieces |

No its the defense!
Piss poor effort last night. Rotations and close outs were pitiful. And the first two games were not exactly confidence inspiring either.
Disappointing to see minimal change from last year so far. Maybe they can somehow "flip the switch" on defense as the season starts but even for a meaningless pre-season game.
I would expect more effort. Especially from guys trying to make the roster. |

As of right now there's one guy on the team who can hit threes and that's rookie Kyle Kuzma. You've got Lopez once he's healthy and hopefully Lonzo improves throughout the season.
And that's it. Two, maybe three guys are reliable from 3.
Plenty of middling/playoff contending teams have terrible defense but good offense. Like Portland & Denver last year. That's how a lot of good teams start. I can't really think of any modern teams without good shooters really killing it. |
All of this is true. That doesn't mean you can't play defense if your offense isn't good.
I guess it's a philosophical thing. I will always believe good defense leads to good offense (but both are connected and feed off each other). Offense is much more variable, while defense should be a constant and depends on scheme, effort, and intelligence (which we have not demonstrated...). There's no reason we can't get back and set our defense every possession. The real problem IMO is our defense has been terrible in set, half court situations, and that is inexcusable. Part of it feels like the pace we're playing, we don't seem to value possessions on both ends. I like playing fast on offense, but that can't come at the cost of playing defense.
But I agree wholeheartedly about having no shooters, it's going to be rough trying to space the floor and score in the half court. Hopefully Lopez will help that a little. |

Defense is effort but it also requires using your brain and anticipating. Knowing what you have to do to make it difficult for the offensive player. Take away their favorite spots, not over react but have a constant presence over the player you're defending. Work so that everyone rotates and moves as one unit. It's not just one guy but all 5 players working on a plan to stop the other team. I don't see this on this team. Sometimes one player works hard but the other just get caught watching and not thinking about what's going to happen next. |

Bad offense = bad defense. On that note, our defense against the 3 was cringe-worthy. These guys talked defense all training camp and they're the same product as last year lol |

Kuzma at the 4. Lopez at the 5. Voila.
You don't surround a generational passer with a brick house like Randle. |
Kumza at the 3, Lopez at the 5, Randle stays at the four. We need Randle's rebounding and abilities as a secondary playmaker. |

For the DHO/kickbacks? That was his only playmaking last season, which doesn't mean much now because Young is gone. |

Still a better play maker than Ingram, which is the point. |

Ingram was really good in college running the 4/5 pick and roll. I'd like to see that with Brook. |

We sucked at defending the 3 point shot, but some of our perimeter defenders won’t make the NBA roster. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

As bad as our defense has been, it seems like they haven't worked on any halfcourt offense as of yet. That, combined with many new players and key players out with injuries make us look bad out there. As others mentioned in this thread, bad offense leads to easy fast break buckets for the other team. _________________ Lakers 49ers Chargers Dodgers |

Maybe Lopez, Bogut, BI, and Lonzo help, but this is looking bad fellas. |
It's just preseason combined with a shortened camp and injuries thrown in. It will get better!! (hopefully) _________________ R.I.P. Doc Buss |

It wasn't just us. He turned down 5 yr/$80 million from Detroit, and there were reportedly teams that would have offered him $20 million a year if he wasn't a restricted free agent. |

I think running Ingram at the 4 would help his offense.
But I imagine he'd be horrible at rebounding for that position. _________________ "Every hurt is a lesson, and every lesson makes you better” |

Yep. even with lopez. he was never a great rebounder.
Randle is by far our best rebounder.
after that it goes down hill. Kuzma can't rebound that well as of yet.
Kyle is our pf and is averaging slightly below 3rpg. thats atrocious. |

Then again when the other team is shooting 75% there aren't many rebounds to be had. _________________ R.I.P. Doc Buss |
