I'm sort of puzzled as to what to make of this guy's career. 8 time All-Star and three-time DPOY, but he substantively had a pretty meaningless career outside of that one Finals appearance and flamed out an early age. Sort of like the Center version of McGrady almost.

I read a good article about him in SI, he is a poster child of an athlete letting outside influences negatively impacting his career. He will be remembered as the best center of a certain time period. I expect him to come back this year in Charlotte.

As with almost everyone, eventually "history" will cease seeing him as a human being, and he'll simply be a name on a plaque -- a Hall of Famer whomade a bunch of all-star teams and won some DPoY but by and large people will give no more thought to him than the average fan gives to Nate Thurmond or Walt Bellamy today.

It's weird to think about the best players at other positions that he overlapped with.

Chris Paul
Kobe
LeBron
Duncan/Garnett/Dirk
Dwight

One of these things is not like the others...

Nah. Over time, the personal peccadillos of players are forgotten, and all that remains are their stats and awards.

20 years from now the name Dwight Howard will bring blank stares, and the only thing most people will know about him is what they see on his basketball-reference page.

Deadly three pointer shooter. He is practicing his 3 point game for this season.

Actually they were very much alike in their particular time period.

I will personally probably remember him symbolically as a certain type of center who lost relevance as the game shifted away from him. I don't know how much the journeyman/bad teammate stuff will stick long-term.

Kobe, Duncan and Lebron are GOAT level players. Howard was never on their level. During his prime, he and Paul were relatively equivalent, though Paul has outlasted him. Howard was simply the best center in a terribly era for centers.

Paul is arguably the second best PG of all-time after Magic.

He was such a phenomenal defender before his back injury, but he seemed to lack the mental fortitude and maybe the talent to change his game.

He'll probably be remembered as the 3 time dpoy who fell off a cliff.

I don't think Paul is thought that highly -- he's usually behind Oscar, Stockton, and Isiah, and then a bunch of guys (including Paul) who people argue about. But, sure, Paul is higher on the list of PGs than Howard is on centers, but that's mostly because there have been a lot more great centers than point guards.

Would you rank him above or below Jason Kidd, Gary Payton, and Steve Nash?

I guess he has the same problem as Dwight in terms of not really having had any significant playoff success.

For me, Paul, Kidd, Payton and Nash are all on the same tier. How I ranked them could change any given day

I can't say I hate him as much as most Laker fans do. I think he's an immensely talented player who never grew up. Compare him to Lebron who came in as an immature brat and matured into the man he is today. Dwight is still mostly that stupid kid from 2004.
