The Odd Situation That Is Anderson Varejao And An NBA Championship Ring
Its not uncommon to see championship contenders trade for or pick up players that will give them that one missing piece. For the Cavs it was Channing Frye, acquired at the trade deadline buzzer in mid-February, and hes been an absolute godsend.

Cleveland, however, had to give up its longest tenured Cavalier and easily a fan favorite in Northeast Ohio. The Cavs traded Varejao to Portland, who then released him almost immediately. Andy, then chose to sign with the Golden State Warriors, of all teams, in pursuit of an NBA Championship.

Letting Andy go hurt a lot of fans, but him signing with the Warriors, infuriated them others as well. Of course, Varejao had the option to go anywhere he wanted and the defending NBA Championship wanted him. Wit the feeling being mutual, it was almost a no-brainer for him to join the Warriors. Fast forward almost three months, and Anderson Varejao is one win away from a guaranteed championship ring.

Varejao played 31 games for a Cleveland team that was still trying to figure out how to play with Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson, and Timofey Mozgov. He was little used in those 31 games, and ended up with Golden State, where he played 22 regular season games after being picked up.

With the Warriors now one victory away from the NBA Finals (as well as one loss away from elimination), Anderson Varejao could very well face his former team in the next round. Again, the Thunder will have something to say about that tonight, but with the Warriors favored by 7.5 points at home in the decisive Game 7, its difficult to go against them. Its going to be a hard fought series, and although many media outlets and oddsmakers have the Warriors as the favorites, the Cavaliers hare hungry to show what they can do with a healthy roster. Regardless of whether its a Cleveland or a Golden State victory, Anderson Varejao will come out a winner.

Back in 2010, as Steve Henson of yahoo Sports reports, the San Francisco Giants traded Bengie Molina to the Texas Rangers mid-season. Fast forward a couple months later, and Molina was the first player in MLB history to appear in the World Series and play against a team he played for earlier that season.

The receiving of a ring is up to management and the organization. The organization can give it to just the players, the players and coaches, or even the players, coaches, and team managers. Its up to the organization, and the Cavs will likely reward Varejao if they come out victorious and with an NBA Championship.

Varejao is the last player I can recall who will have played on both teams in the same year who are in the NBA Finals. It would probably look best with a big C on it though .

It'd be great to watch Varejao beat the Cavs.

Cavaliers have offered Anderson Varejao a championship ring. Does he take it?

In the middle of last season, the Cleveland Cavaliers let go of long-time Cav and fan favorite Anderson Varejao to make room for Channing Frye, a stretch four they thought would be more valuable in the playoffs. In hindsight it seems the right move.

After a cap clearing move in Portland, Varejao ended up on the bench of the Golden State Warriors. We all know the story from there, including Varejao getting some meaningful minutes after Andrew Bogut went down, but it wasnt enough for Golden State.

Which brings us to the awkward championship ring conversation. Usually, an iconic team player like Varejao would get one from the Cavaliers, but will Varejao want this one? From Marc Stein of ESPN:

Anderson. Varejao says the Cavaliers have indeed offered him a championship ring but says he hasn't decided yet whether to accept it.

Good on the Cavaliers for offering.

Is there a correct answer for Varejao? A wrong answer? I cant blame him either way.

He is on the Warriors roster again this season, and he once again could get meaningful minutes (now behind Zaza Pachulia). Does he decide that one with this team is what he wants (and will bet is going to happen)? Nobody can answer all these questions for him.

Better believe I would take that ring. Even if you feel weird about keeping it you can just auction it off.

Considering the Cavs are giving a ring to a coach they fired, no it would not be wierd.

Don't think Varejao accepted the Cavs ring last year, which is understandable. He would probably accept the Warriors one this year, if offered. But it's gotta feel empty.

Anderson Varejao is like a championship repulsor. Teams that sign him lose the Finals and teams that cut him win it all.

Warriors offer Anderson Varejao championship ring for last season, he accepts

Anderson Varejao played 14 games for the Golden State Warriors last season, after having been part of their Finals team down the stretch the season before. However, partway through last season, when Shaun Livingston was banged up, the Warriors waived Varejao to make room to sign Briante Weber, a D-League point guard who could provide some depth behind Stephen Curry.

When training camp opened this year, one of the topics the Warriors discussed was whether Varejao, now out of the league, deserved a ring. From the sportv.globo.com site in Brazil, via NBA Reddit.

Two weeks ago I got a call from the Golden State and they told me that there was a vote between the players and the coaching staff, and they decided that it would be well deserved that I receive a ring for the time I spent with them.

Varejao accepted the ring.

Which seems a fitting end for the 13-year NBA career of the Brazilian big man. He was a fan (and LeBron) favorite in Cleveland for a decade who finished his career with the Warriors. He averaged 7.3 points and 7.2 assists per game, made the NBA All-Defensive Team one season, and fans loved him for his hard-nosed style of play.

The Cavaliers had offered him a ring the season before when they won the title he had played half a season for them before he was traded for Channing Frye in a three-team deal (Varejao went to Portland, but they waived him before he could put on a jersey). The Warriors picked up Varejao, and he said he did not accept the ring from the Cavs because he had played for the opposition on the Finals.

Now he has got one of his own.
