I don't want to throw any shade or anything, but maybe Russell might respect Atkinson more? He's always seemed to have a bit of a smart ass streak to him. Atkinson is one of the most respected developmental guys in the NBA while some people are starting to have doubts about Luke as a coach. People say coach Kenny is a hard working dude who knows his stuff and cares about his players. Exactly the type of guy who can get a lot of respect from a young player.

One of the interesting quotes from Russell described Atkinson exactly as you did: hard-working. I think that can certainly be one factor.

Hmm...a Randle/Kuzma/Ingram/DLo/Lonzo lineup would've been really fun on offense.

lol if 9-20, 2-3 from distance, 24 points, 3 assists in 24 minutes is a non-factor, I'm not sure what can be said about the guys currently on our team.

And getting blown out had nothing to do with him. They played them even when he was on the floor.

I wouldn't be surprised if he had problems with Shaw. That guy had beef with Andre Miller of all people (among others). Maybe it had something to do with Shaw being a former a PG himself.

Before he checked back into the game, Russell had 18 on 7-12 shooting in 15 minutes

No, he doesn't know that. All he did was look at the box score.

Young players also grow up and learn what impacts games. No reason those things couldn't have happened here. And if there are reasons, then that's a bigger organization problem than anything else.

Yeah very fair. Easy enough to point to Atkinson as the catalyst, but Russell was always cerebral so maybe it's just natural progression.
*sigh*

Natural progression. Something Magic didn't want to believe in.

He's very fortunate that the whole "If you just traded Ingram to Indiana you'd have gotten Paul George but you traded Russell instead and made Ingram untouchable" story hasn't gone up like it could have,

Ingram's value was sky high at the time of the draft too.

Just watched the most recent set of highlights. Makes me want to cry. Crazy to think that the popular opinion the last couple years is Porzingis is better than Dlo. Even crazier that personal vendettas can trump simple talent assessment (aka the eye test).

If Ingram's value was so high we could have gotten Cousins or Paul George for him straight up. Then we could have probably fleeced Brooklyn and taken Lopez, LaVert AND the 27th Pick off their hands.

Throw Clarkson in that deal and we could probably have gotten the pick from them(22nd) that became Jarrett Allen.

Would have unloaded both Clarkson AND Mozgov's contracts and went into free agency with 11M more. Oh well.

Lakers Trade:
Brandon Ingram
Jordan Clarkson
Timofey Mozgov

Nets Trade:
Brook Lopez
22nd Pick
27th Pick
Caris LeVert

The site probably would have gone into a frenzy. But it likely wouldn't be now. Especially if Russell was performing like he is right now and making the jump we expected. Kuzma would likely be the starting 3 by this point.

Imagine that lineup

Ball
Russell
Kuzma
Randle
Lopez

That's the perfect kind of team for Lonzo to run and just the right amount of spacing around him AND enough passers that allow him to roam off ball and do his thing there.

How could it be so clear to so many fans but not so clear to Magic? Oh well, guess he felt like doing Byron a solid while betting on Ingram to be KD. He looks right now like he bet wrong.

Seems like the kind of natural progression we were all expecting given the nature of the numbers he was putting up at his age, especially when he was given minutes.

Imagine that....

Would have loved to watch what a back court of Lonzo and Russell could have done. But I shouldn't have counted on some of this FO's decision making when they essentially told Jerry West they didn't need him, and then the kid they trade as a salary dump is the one Jerry West touted and said would be a 12 time All-Star.

Welp, somebody is gonna make somebody else eat their words, and as it currently stands, it doesn't look like Ingram is who Magic said he was, but it's looking like Russell is who the Lakers fans that did their research said he likely could be.

Maybe we should have hired that analytics guy first.

Notice how well he does when he gets kick-ahead passes in early offense.

There was a defensive possession in the 1st half where Reddick got the ball on the wing and tried to dribble around Russell, but DLo was really bodying him up in a defensive stance with his hands behind his back, was called for a foul, but it was really refreshing to see him fight that hard to keep his man in front of him and give effort on the defensive end. Looks like he really bought in on that end.

Also, his floater game has gotten very nice. Didn't use it here in LA as much as I would've wanted him to, but looks like he got it down pat now. Gonna be a huge boost for him offensively to utilize that shot when getting to the lane.

I see him flourishing with the Nets. Heck, he was showing that post ASB here. Putting up 20 points in a half against Wall, 40 against Cavs to name a few. He will be looking for that big extension in a year or two.
