Ready or Not, Here We Come… The Lakers wrapped up the preseason with almost a scrimmage-type game against the Clippers, who sat all of their starters.

The Lakers led by 5 at the half, but gave up 61 points to the Clipper bench – not the kind of defensive outing they’ve been producing in the past couple of games.

“The ball was moving for us in the first half,” Luke said as a positive, but he mentioned he’s going to show the players some tape of “what it looks like defensively when they are doing it with effort and without.”

Luke thought that the team kind of let down when they heard the Clipper starters were resting. The two teams combined for 60 freethrows and 50 turnovers, making for a long night.

There were various contributors across the board in the 111-104 Laker win. Brandon Ingram finally showed the balanced game and the results followed with 15 points and 5 assist. Julius Randle had 15 points in 13 minutes before going to the locker room with back spasms. Both Lopez and Caruso chipped in with double digit scoring. Notably absent was Kyle Kuzma, who struggled to score at a high clip tonight.

There were moments of good D in the preseason and moments of the kind of ball movement they want to play with. They need to find consistency in both of those areas. Hopefully, the young team can get everyone healthy and start building some real chemistry sooner rather than later.

Lopez -- -- The Lakers went right to him to start the game, feeding the vet to get them going early. He had 11 points in 5-6 shooting in his first 8 minutes. We will finally get to see him play with Lonzo in the next one. He’s had all kinds of space for perimeter shots so far, but it should be interesting finally seeing those two go to work. “He just opens the floor for everyone…the balls going to be moving even more and I think we’re pretty unselfish now,” Lopez said. We really need him to hit from distance with our lack of perimeter shooting. He probably could have worked the post more in this game, but in the next one we’ll want him to stretch the floor. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 7-12 shooting (2-5 from three) to go with 4 boards and 2 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He came off the screen, took the post feed and scored the jumphook on the Lakers first possession. He drained a deep three next time down on the pick and pop. He missed a wing three next time down. He scored a layup on the screen-roll. He took an inbounds in the post and swished the jumphook. He took the interior bounce pass and scored a layup. He missed a 10-footer, attacking off the dribble. He spotted up in the corner after clearing out for Ingram and Ingram found him for the three on the kickout. He backed down a guard from the perimeter and came up short. He missed a three from the top of the arc. He had 14 points on 6-10 shooting Second Half: He missed a wing three. He swished a wing jumper off the two-man game with Caruso.

Ingram -- -- Easily his best game of the preseason. He didn’t force the drive, settling for what the defense gave him and knocking down shots from the perimeter or finding teammates for open shots. This was a much, much better balance to his game. Really glad to see him move past the tunnel vision. That made a huge difference. Like Luke mentioned, he’s got the passing in his game – use it. Let’s hope the previous game was the learning experience he needed and the positive results from this game keeps him on the right path as we hit the regular season. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-10 shooting (2-3 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 5 assists, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He got a kind bounce or two on the corner three and it fell. He forced a pull-up straight away, not quite under control on the gather. Great bounce pass in transition shortly later to Nance for the dunk. The defender went under the screen so he drained the wing three. He missed a wing jumper. He sank a quick-fire wing jumper. He missed a forced wing jumper, a defender challenging him well. He attacked to his right and found Lopez in the corner for the three. He missed a sideline three. He attacked from the corner and powered in the And-1 layup over Johnson, he made the FT. He had 11 points on 4-8 shooting and 5 assists. Second Half: He curled off the DHO from Nance, attacked the lane and powered in the And-1, he missed the FT. He sank a pull-up baseline jumper in early offense.

Nance -- -- He played kind of a soft game tonight. He wasn’t imposing his will on either end. He wasn’t aggressive when he had Wes Johnson or even smaller defenders on him. Stretches like we saw in this game are why he’s struggling to not be just a bench player. You just can’t disappear, play small against small players or negate every advantage you have out there by just going through the motions for long stretches. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-4 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He changed ends with speeds and Ingram hit him for the dunk. Wild post shot and he didn’t hit rim. He grabbed an offensive board, kicked it out, we gave it back to him and he hit the jumphook. Second Half: Nice screen off the DHO to free up Ingram for the And-1 drive. He mistimed a lob to Ingram and it went out of bounds (probably illegal anyway with movement on the screen). He stripped a man on the other end in the corner. He charged on the screen-roll. Crappy read on the short-roll pass, turnover. He missed a baseline jumper. He drew FTs setting a perimeter screen, he missed both. He fumbled away a pass in the paint.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Nice start on the defensive end with 3 steals in the first quarter. It wasn’t pretty, but he kind of filled up the stat sheet doing a lot of the misc. stuff. Good ball movement from him. That helped set the tone. Of course, the Lakers won’t have him for the first two games of the regular season. Hard to know which direction they will go, but it sure would be nice to string together some games with a full roster. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-8 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 6 boards, 5 assists, 3 steals, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He curled into the paint and was stripped, turnover. He attacked and kicked to Ingram for the corner three. He missed the corner three on the kickout. Nice weakside rotation by Ennis and KCP, who came up with the steal covering for Ennis. He jumped a passing lane, stole the ball and took it for the breakaway layup. Nice find with the interior bounce pass to Lopez for the score. He reached around a defender to poke a ball loose. He spun off the screen and hit the pull-up wing jumper. He curled into the lane, missed the floater, bounced up quickly and put it back in. He saved Ingram from getting backdoored with some good help D. Second Half: He popped out behind a screen and rattled in a wing three. He airballed a three out of a timeout. Short on a wing three.

Ennis -- -- He got himself into foul trouble (five early in the third) and that limited his minutes. It was probably for the best as he was again getting outplayed by Caruso. Not sure what the Lakers do in the next game. They will have KCP out and hopefully Lonzo back. I doubt Ennis starts with Ball, and with how well Caruso has been playing, does Caruso get the backup PG job? He should. Really nothing to his gmae tonight with 5 fouls and 3 turnover being the biggest numbers he put up. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 5 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He was called for an offensive foul, slightly hooking a defender on the drive. He missed the corner three on a kickout. He missed a quick-fire deep three. He attacked the paint and was smothered. He pushed it coast to coast for a layup. Second Half: He blocked a man from behind. Sloppy DHO and he was called for the moving screen.

Kuzma -- -- He needs to shower off some of that Wes Johnson-like play that clung to him from start to finish. Slow first half as he was missing threes or losing the ball when he attacked with speed in the offensive zone. He was, however, drawing fouls and getting to the line for some points and also moving the ball pretty well as the other parts of his game weren’t working at all, but even the passes started to get a bit sloppy. Probably a positive sign that he can get so many assists and scratch out points when nothing is really working for him. His only score tonight was a sweet, over-the-head layup on a drive…just one more new thing we haven’t really seen from him previously. Of all the games since really the Chicago combine, this was probably his worst. Hopefully, he doesn’t have too many opening night jitters and brings his A game to start the season. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 1-8 shooting (0-6 from three, 6-6 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 5 assists, 5 turnovers and 2 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He attacked and kicked to Caruso for the three. He pushed out the rebound but lost the dribble. He took a pass in transition shortly later and shoveled it to Randle for the dunk. He got shoved under the hoop on the FT rebound and was luckily given the foul call for FTs, he made both. He nearly banked in a 60-footer at the buzzer. He drew a double and his cross-court feed was picked off. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He missed a wing three, short. He dribbled a ball off his foot in transition. He attacked from the three line off great Laker ball movement and was fouled on the monster dunk attempt, he made both FTs. He attacked across the lane to his left and hit the backhand layup over his head. Second Half: Lost on rotations and his man scored a putback. He missed a corner jumper on the kickout. He fumbled a pass on the break, then couldn’t finish the layup. He kicked out to Caruso for the three. He ran over a defender on the floater, turnover. He missed an open three straight away. He missed an open wing three. He fired a hot pass through Hart’s hands in the paint. He attacked off the three line and drew FTs, he made both.

Randle -- -- He left the game in the third quarter with back spasms. “I just kind of pulled it a little bit,” he said of his back. Asked if he was worried about it, he said no. Hopefully, it’s not a big deal or a nagging thing. We sure need him to compete this season. He was putting up points tonight in short minutes. A little sloppy in the decision making on the break. Overall, a very strong preseason from Randle. More hustle, more solid screen-setting, good job changing ends, good job challenging. Now he needs to put it all together in the regular season. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-8 shooting (5-7 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He drew FTs on the dribble, he made both. He crossed over to his left, took contact and hit the And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He missed a jumphook, followed it and scored at the rim. He dunked in transition off the shovel feed from Kuzma (good job getting down court). He fired a backdoor pass to Clarkson for the layup. He grabbed an offensive board and drew FTs on the putback attempt, he made one. He missed a twisting layup (instead of going up strong). He deflected a pass on the interior to ignite a break. He had 9 points on 3-5 shooting and 4 boards. Second Half: He sealed a fronting defender and Brewer hit him for the layup. He was fouled on the interior feed from Brewer, he made both FTs. Bad advanced pass to Kuzma who wasn’t open, turnover. He up-faked in the corner, spun to lose the defender and scored the layup. He missed a jumphook, short. Another horrible transition pass and it was picked off easily, resulting in a foul and FTs.

Clarkson -- -- Kind of an average game from JC. He scored of a backdoor feed from Randle, he hit a floater, a wing pull-up and a three for his scores. Given all the changes in the roster, you expect he’s going to struggle a bit to find his spots in the flow of things. That just how he is. I’d like to at least see improved communication on D. Sometimes that looks a little lax. Typically, you’d think your backup SG would get the starting job in the next two games, but who knows with Luke? The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-9 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He called for a screen, pounded the dribble and hit the pull-up wing jumper. He slipped and lost the dribble. He then fired an advanced pass out of bounds a few seconds later. He backdoored his man and Randle found him with bullet that JC put in like an alley-oop. He missed a flat three on a kickout. He hung and missed a layup after taking some contact. He hit a wing three on a pitch out from Randle. Second Half: He missed a tough fade, forcing it. He missed a wing step-back trying to work for the last shot of the quarter. He hit a floater working off the Bryant screen.

Blue -- -- Just a handful of late-game minutes again and he finished with 3 points, all on FTs. No idea what the future holds for him right now. Luke mentioned how he gets after it in practice. He certainly didn’t get a lot of run this preseason, only late in games…meaning he’s probably not cracking the rotation. I’m guessing they can sign him to a two-way deal as they still have one of those available and then bring him up for a chunk of the season at the very least. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 0-2 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 foul in 7 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nice job drawing a foul with the shotclock about to expire. He attacked, slammed on the brakes, drew the foul and missed the open 5-footer (should have used glass maybe), he made one FT. He was swatted out of bounds. He swiped a kickout, attacked and missed the layup but Hart tipped it in. He drew FTs on the perimeter, he made both.

Hart -- -- “I love the way he competes,” Luke said. He mentioned Hart’s a very polished, well-coached rookie, understanding the angles and little things of the game you normally have to teach rookies. He’s been very steady on both ends in the preseason. Wish he knocked down more of the three ball, but he looked good finishing around the rim as usual and also getting into the midrange for scores. He seems like the type of player whose going to improve his impact offensively more and more as the season goes on. It will be interesting to see where the minutes come from, though. Occasionally, Luke goes to these three guard lineups, but he’s got JC and KCP in front of him for now. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-8 shooting (0-3 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He missed the sideline three on a kickout. He scored a layup on the break. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He missed a tag and it led to a dunk. He jab-stepped and missed a wing three. He attacked off the three line and lost the ball. Good work filling the lane with Caruso pushing out and he scored a layup. He attacked the rim in transition and he was fouled, he made one. He attacked off the three line, pulled up at the FT line and knocked it down. He followed the break and tipped in the Blue miss.

Caruso -- -- He led the team with a +11, just a night and day difference with him out there. I didn’t think his D was as strong as previous games, but he still had 3 steals. His scoring tonight was of the catch-and-shoot variety, which is not what you’d typically expect from a PG, but that shows how well the ball was moving and ultimately how we want to play. He finished with three three's in this game. That's big. I’m assuming he’s on the active roster opening night. Right? The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-6 shooting (3-4 from three) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 3 steals, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 27 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: Wide open and he traveled. He kept an offensive board alive. He sank the corner three on the kickout. He missed a wing three. He sank the elbow turnaround off the split cut with Lopez that left him open. Second Half: He sank a corner three off a swing pass. He sank a corner three on a kickout. He scooped up the loose ball and hit Hart filling the lane for the layup.

Weber -- -- He picked up two techs in the fourth. The second one a double tech with another player and that sent him to the locker room. A rare preseason ejection. I can’t remember the last one. A little sloppy, but he was able to get a couple scores at the rim. One on a drive, the other on a backdoor feed. I assume it’s off to the G-league for him. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-4 shooting to go with 2 boards, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 7 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He fumbled away the ball after working off a screen. He tried to attack on iso and was promptly rejected. He backdoored the overplaying D and Bryant hit him for the layup. He lost his man with a behind-the-back dribble and took it for a layup. He missed a wing pull-up jumper. He pushed off on a drive, then picked up a tech up 4 with 5 minutes left.

Brewer -- -- Really good minutes from Brewer late in the third quarter and into the fourth. That’s the instant kind of spark role that we probably utilize him in during the regular season. When things are looking a little lifeless out there, throw him in the mix. He certainly mixed it up with some very active D (3 steals and taking a charge). That also turned into transition. Got to love that. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 3 steals, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 9 minutes. He was a +1 The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He hit Randle with a pass over the fronting D for the layup. He attacked baseline in transition and bounced to Randle for FTs. Weakside rotation and he drew a charge on Harrell. He scooped up a loose ball and took it for the dunk. He then hustled back in transition to steal it. He pushed up a rebound, lost a defender with an inside-out move, then fed Bryant for the dunk. Nice dig on help D to strip the ball away from a driving Clipper and ignite the break. He was stripped trying to push up court. He missed the elbow pull-up jumper.

Bryant -- -- He came in with a minute left. After a dunk, he picked up a couple fouls on driving Clippers and then another setting a screen and one more on a rebound (looks like one of those might have been credited to someone else). But, yes, a little foul prone. Still, I liked some of the effort out there and you can tell he’s a legit big body whenever he’s challenging or going after boards. That standing reach is impressive. He threwdown a dunk on a roll to the hoop for his points. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 8 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He slammed off the feed from Brewer in semi-transition. Nice challenge and board. Good read on Weber backdooring the over play and his feed led to a layup.

Zubac -- -- Last man in with 5 minutes left. His only points came off a jumper on one of our final possessions. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 2 boards and 1 turnover in 5 minutes. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Good challenge in the post and he secured the board. Sloppy footwork on a drive, travel. He sank a 13-footer off a feed from a guard.

Walton -- -- Against the Clipper reserves, the Lakers led 15-10 after 5 minutes when the first timeout came… Lakers up 7 when Randle, Kuzma and Caruso came in to run with Ingram and KCP… JC in for KCP, Lakers up 8… Hart in for Ingram with 3 minutes to go… The Lakers led 38-26 at the end of the first quarter… Randle running the backup center to start the second quarter, as well. These seem to be rotations Luke will go to in the regular season, except for when Randle sits. Tonight he brought in Nance at the backup C with 7 minutes left, Lakers up 10… So Nance, Kuzma, KCP, Hart, Ennis… Ingram and Lopez in for Kuzma and Hart, sliding Nance to the PF… We Johnson lighting the Lakers up. Lakers up 1 when the timeout came with 3 minutes left in the half… Caruso in to close the half… The Lakers led 66-61 at the half… He sat Ennis with his fifth foul after 3 minutes for Caruso, probably for the best anyway… Lakers in the bonus with 9 minutes left… Lakers playing soft, Nance especially… He brought in Brewer for Nance who wasn’t really making much of an impact… Randle and Kuzma in for Lopez and Ingram, up 1… Bryant into the game for Randle, who went into the locker room with 1 minute left… The Lakers led 91-88 heading into the fourth… Garbage time minutes for most of the fourth. Weber in for Caruso… Hart in for Brewer, Lakers up 8 with 8:34 left in the fourth… Weber ejected and Caruso back… Fourth quarter lasted forever with fouls…

How can we get Nance to be more consistent in making an impact and to get him out of his Wes Johnson mode?

thanks db larry needs to learn to stop being so unselfish he is the only player I have ever seen who is unselfish to a fault, at one point during the game iirc he literally had a easy hook shot/layup with a defender out of position and he passes it out to the 3 for a TO. Shoot the ball larry!!!!

Thanks DB. I really love the hustle of our bench, specifically Brewer, Hart, and Weber. They all have a little pit bull in them.

Agree with Nance.

The guy is invisible. It's 4vs 5 with him on the floor. Seems like a great guy but as a player he really is Wesley.

Where that jumper all our players worked on?

Thanks DB! Excellent recap as always. Missed the first quarter and the rest of the game was mostly misery punctuated with a few good moments. Had to celebrate a win though, even if it is deep bench against the deep bench!

Interesting comments on Caruso. Based on increasing preseason game minute distributions it does look like Caruso may have managed to play himself on to this roster. Does that mean we send TBryant to the G League? Who else would go to make room? Dropping Bogut is risky bc we could use his interior rim protection, IF he ever gets healthy.

Briante Webber techs were weird af imo... from what the TNT announcers were saying the T's were completely tone deaf to a good natured ribbing between Weber and DeAndre J. It appeared D Jordan was pissed enough to argue with the refs at commercial break about it too. Either way Webber was G League bound.

Brewer - Man he makes things happen out there. I really like how he can change possessions and create havoc when the team needs it. Steals. Tips. Mischief. Mistake prone and not a good outside scorer, but the definition of wily vet is a picture of Corey Brewer smiling. We need him in a reserve role on this roster. He makes stuff happen when the team is getting stale.

Hart - solid all around play on both sides of the court, and with experience who knows how solid he's going to get as a scoring guard. There's a reason he was considered a key player on an NCAA Champion team. I hope he keeps getting playing time.

Lonzo's gonna be just fine come opening day, BI looks like he took some lessons to heart after the end of that last game, Kuzma is still a boss even on a bad day, Lopez is a boss too so it's looking better on these fronts. On the flip side, Larry Nance needs to rediscover his inner Gary Lance, and I'm pretty worried if Randle's back doesn't heal fully in the next 5 days. We really need Randle out there and healthy.

Here's hoping opening day looks better!

Thanks, DB!

What happened to Zubac?

He hit the Game Winner! #clutch

That game was a boring but I'll take a W for a touch of "feel good", "momentum" heading into the actual season. I'll save my worrying for when the season starts and the real folks are playing together.

Thanks much for the Pre-Season recaps, DB!

Nance needs to play with more of a "Gimme that ball!" attitude. Not just if he's got a shorty hiding on him in the post but his aggressiveness on the glass or in passing lanes or swatting a shot. He's never going to be a highly skilled player, but he can be an impact player with his athleticism and length if he imposes his will.

Pretty good for a preseason game, hope they're all ready for the regular season.

DB - you are one committed person for doing this for all the preseason games! I think the analysis of these games is tough due to differrent lineups, causing offense and defense to be rather inconsistent. But thanks for the work you do!

Hopefully he will morphed from a Wes Johnson-type player to a mentally tough Black Mamba mindset. Maybe somebody needs to be always in his face pushing him - who will be that person (Lonzo, Lopez, KCP, etc.)?

His tentativeness out there can be frustrating to watch especially when he's passing up good shots. It's even more frustrating to hear him talk about how he really is a good offensive player but just needs to get out of his own head. I like Larry as a player and person, but he needs to earn his minutes especially if he's going to start over Randle.

Is his "high" basketball IQ telling him to be passive?

In the first two games, who will be the starting SG?

Personally, I think Nance gets the max out of his abilities. Asking him to do even more on offense is probably a bad idea.
