Crappy to Scrappy… And maybe back to crappy again in the last couple minutes.

In the first two games (and all of preseason), the Lakers have been in transition about a quarter of their possessions, nearly double the mark from last year. If you wonder about the Ball effect on the team, you see it immediately right there. They were stuck in the mud early in this game as the Pelicans contained the Lakers pace. They did it by scoring on 69% of their shots in the first 18 minutes of action.

Once again, the boo’s came out at Staples during this stretch.

The Lakers would pick up the D and the pace and trim the lead to 13 by halftime. In the second half, Luke would dial up a scrappy bench lineup that would dig the Lakers out of a hole. Clarkson was scoring and setting up teammates (yes, as backup PG). Julius was battling in the paint. Kuzma got 30 minutes and dropped 20 points like it was no big thing. And the other Laker guards got after it.

The Lakers pulled out to a 5-point lead with 5 minutes to go.

“I thought we started playing for each other much more,” Luke said.

The Lakers ran out of gas down the stretch, giving up an 11-0 run in the final minutes. That did them in, and they Lakers fell 119-112.

They’re searching for identity – a team that can scrap on D and get out in transition – and their searching for the combinations of players that can get them there. With all the roster turnover, you’ve just got to give them more time. We’d normally be in preseason still right now, too.

Ball -- -- He was struggling from three and that hurt. We needed a little more production from him shooting wise. Regardless of his shooting style, any rookie is going to be inconsistent for a while. Still, he was able to drive the machine and set up teammates again and again, finishing with 13 assists. No inconsistency with his ability to fill up the stat column there. Defensively, he had a backbreaking breakdown late in the game, giving up a drive and dish on a perimeter overplay in the final minute. That was the dagger. (By the way, Etwaun Moore’s 8-9 shooting for 19 points really hurt the Lakers, especially one three late in the game up against the shotclock where Ball was all over him on the challenge. In a nutshell, a couple makes by Ball and a couple less by Moore and this is a different outcome.) Good learning experience for the young team. We had a stretch there with Lonzo, Kuzma and Hart all out there in crunch time. That’s your 2017 first round. Bright future for sure. When do we talk about Ball possibly leading the league in assists? Is it in a couple seasons when the team is better built around him? The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-13 shooting (0-5 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 13 assists, 1 steal, 5 turnovers and 1 foul in 36 minutes. He was a -24. The Action: Slow post entry pass and it was picked off. He missed a corner step-back jumper. He missed a wing three. He got the Lakers first bucket filling a lane on the break. He drew an illegal screen call on Cousins on D. He sank a pull-up wing jumper. He swiped a pass to ignite a break. He hit Lopez for the wing three. He bricked on a pull-up three in early offense. He drew FTs on a collision with Jameer in transition, he made both. He set up Randle for a score on the screen-roll. Too low on the pass to Bogut in the paint, turnover. He kicked out to Kuzma for a three. He hit Clarkson in transition for a three. He missed a three when the D went under the screen. He hit a runner at the FT line working off the pick. He missed a runner badly on his next attempt. He probed off the Nance screen and lobbed to him for the dunk. Bad inbounds between him and Lopez after a made basket resulting in a steal and score (got to give that to Zo for not giving Lopez any room to do much with the pass). He hit Nance rolling for the layup. He had 8 points, 7 assists and 3 boards at the half. Second Half: He attacked baseline and missed, but Nance cleaned it up. He hit Lopez for the floater on the two-man game. Bad pocket pass, easily picked off for a break the other way. He hit KCP with the pass for a breakaway score. He missed a pull-up 18-footer. Wild pass on the break, turnover. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He attacked with speed off the Randle screen and fed Julius for the layup. He was rejected on the break. He missed a three on a kickout. He got lost on the perimeter and gave up penetration and score with 27 seconds left, poor D.

Lopez -- -- Defensively, our centers need to be careful how deep they sag to plug the paint on normal nights. With the Pelicans, they have to be careful with how well their bigs stretch the floor (and really anything else they do). Lopez was not up to the challenge in that regard. We closed with small ball that was much more aggressive and plucky on D. Offensively, he wasn’t able to get much done, either. You could argue that maybe you put Lopez back in the game late to help steady the offense in crunch time, but he wasn’t looking good out there on either end. Hopefully, he feels at home at Staples sooner rather than later. The Stats: The Action: He missed a wild step-back turnaround up against the shotclock. He missed a short one on the face up. He hit Ingram cutting baseline for FTs. He drew FTs on a jumphook in the paint, he made both. He sank a three off the pick and pop with Lonzo. He missed a challenged three. He missed a jumphook in the post. Second Half: He was picked on the perimeter, then fouled, ugh. Cousins went around him for a layup. He stepped back and was short on a three. He hit the floater off the two-man game. Way short on an open floater.

Ingram -- -- Pretty poor start on both ends by Ingram. He was taking challenged pull-ups or off-balance shots. His poor shot selection and a turnover helped the Lakers in a hole early on. Luke left him on the bench for a long time after Ingram’s first stint. Then Ingram picked up some early foul trouble in the third quarter. Luke brought him back later in that quarter, however, and Ingram reeled in his aggressiveness and let the game come to him. Much better. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-9 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +16. The Action: He attacked to his right on iso and missed a layup attempt. He couldn’t finish at the rim on the backdoor cut, but drew FTs, he made one. He missed a challenged pull-up, not a good shot, got it back and missed an open three. He missed a wild leaner on a drive. He ballwatched and gave up a layup. He attacked to his left, gave a hesitation to freeze the defender and score the layup. He iso’d and missed a step-back jumper, not a good look. He threw a pass away on the break, layup the other way. He attacked baseline and couldn’t finish the layup. Nice extra pass to KCP in transition for the And-1 three. Second Half: Poor foul from behind on the break to give up an And-1. He attacked off the kickout and scored a layup. He gave up another And-1 layup and had to sit. He curled to his left, got into Davis’s chest and scored the layup. He picked up his fifth foul on a good challenge on Davis on the perimeter.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Good to have him back in the mix to get us a little more of a two-way traditional SG on the floor. He was in on a flurry of scores late in the second quarter to help cut the Pelican lead in half. Forget the preseason, his first official game as a Laker was tonight and he balled. “It felt good just to give the energy for the crowd and for my teammates,” Kentavious said. Hope we see a lot more of this to make up for losing the trio of DLo, Young and Lou from last season. There was a stretch where he was in a bit of a frenzy on both ends of the floor. That’s the kind of ball we need to play as a team. It’s desperate/high energy ball that gets us changing ends and playing at the pace we want to. Superb game tonight. How about that chase down shotblock late in the game? Wish our guys could have recovered that. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-11 shooting (2-4 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 31 minutes. He was a -19. The Action: He attacked and couldn’t finish the lefty layup. He jumped a passing lane and took it for a dunk. He up-faked to lose the big, attacked baseline and scored the layup. He drained an And-1 three off good Laker ball movement in transition, he made the FT for the 4-point play. He swiped a kickout, attacked and hit the pull-up in transition. A little wild on a drive in transition next time down and it resulted in a jumpball. Second Half: His pass was picked off for an And-1 the other way. He was fouled on a pull-up wing three, he made all three FTs. He pulled up at the FT line in transition and hit. He iso’d, spun and hit the tricky 18-footer. He missed a sideline three. He scored a layup in transition off the hit ahead from Zo. He missed an open 10-footer. Wow, amazing recovery to reject a transition layup to save a sure hoop in the final minute. He missed a turnaround three.

Nance -- -- Intriguing battle at the PF spots. Tonight, we gave Kuzma big run and that limited Nance’s minutes. Both Kuz and Julius outplayed Larry tonight. A little bit of chemistry with Zo on the two-man game offensively. I’m hoping those two are starting to figure that out a little more because we all know Larry can finish when he’s got a runway. We’re exploring the combinations of pick and roll and short pick and pop. Once they become more and more adept at that, the short role kickouts start opening up as the D collapses and we add more variety into the mix offensively. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-6 shooting to go with 3 boards, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He missed a jumphook after Lopez probably overpassed to him. He was stripped rolling to the hoop. He missed an open wing jumper. Nice close out to challenge a three and force a miss. He dunked off the lob pass from Zo. He scored a backhand layup on the screen-roll with Lonzo at the buzzer. Second Half: He cleaned up the missed Lonzo drive. He had a breakaway score erased on a charge over Davis (not sure his foot was out of the restricted area).

Kuzma -- -- Luke threw him in the mix tonight and again we were closing with Kuzma. With the twin towers of the Pelicans, this is where it’s tricky for Kuzma at the 4 spot. He had some very brief moments against those two in the first half, as the Pelicans staggered the bigs to play with the bench. Maybe a possession or two at most. In the second half, we brought Kuzma in after 5 minutes for Nance to play against AD. The Pelicans again went small, so Kuz didn’t have time against that lineup. Finally, when we were rolling late in the game, the Pelicans had both their bigs in Kuzma was put to the test. It seemed like they preferred to go up against Randle, but any way they were attacking our small ball lineup was battling. Kuzma has a strip on AD and Randle was playing with great energy. I’m guessing we see that unit a bit more. Luke said prior to the game that they want him on the floor no matter what. And, hopefully, that’s with considerable time on the floor with Lonzo. Offensively, he had a scrappy 20 points. He knocked down a couple of threes, he got points in the paint and got to the line. Just get him minutes and figure out the D later. He was up to the challenge tonight against those bigger lineups, so what’s the harm? Let him battle. Luke has in the last two and Kuzma is balling. Great experience for him tonight. That 20 points was on very low time with the ball in his hands, which makes it great if you’ve got guys who need the ball (but are willing passers). The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-13 shooting (2-6 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a 65-foot chuck at the buzzer. His first touch after 5 minutes, he lost his man with a head fake and set up Bogut for a dunk. Quick roll to the hoop and he was hacked for FTs, he made both. Sloppy kickout and it was picked off. He drained a corner three on the kickout from Ball. He attacked, spun and was stripped. Second Half: He missed a hook across the lane. He attacked to his left and hit the runner with his right. He missed a corner three. He cut baseline weakside and JC hit him for the easy dunk. He drained a three with 0.5 left in the quarter. Looked like he stripped the ball off AD on iso. JC found him in the paint for a floater. He up-faked, took a dribble and hit the 17-footer. Great job crashing the glass on the next possession to get fouled and earn FTs, he made both. He missed a three straight away. He missed a three. He attacked Nelson and scored the short runner. He grabbed an offensive board and missed the tough turnaround.

Randle -- -- Julius, bottle this energy. This is how you need to play. Get after it. Doesn’t matter if you are starting or on the bench as you can see, you get after it and make it hard for them to take you out of the game. “It was his best game so far,” Luke said. “Like any player in this league I think he’s been a little frustrated that he wasn’t starting. Tonight, his energy level just seemed right tonight.” Luke said it was apparent from the shootaround. That’s what he’s got to do. As a result, he was making an impact and holding down the paint as our small ball big. He defended AD really well last season and we all know he and Cousins have had plenty of good battles. So he’s up to the challenge against these bigs and that showed. The numbers aren’t even that impressive, but if there was a stat just for general scrappiness, he would have filled up that column. “You’re encouraged that we can fight our way out of games,” Randle said. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-6 shooting (1-3 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: Bad angle on D and he gave up an And-1 layup. He scored a layup on the screen-roll with Lonzo. He missed an off-hand layup on the screen-roll next time down. He tried to iso and lost the handle, turnover. Cousins just went right through him for an easy layup. Second Half: Lost on D, he gave up a three. Awful pass and idea, easy turnover for the Pelicans. He drew a charge on Cousins on the other end to get it back (good job going down). Good job coming up with a board between to bigs for a score. He pushed up the ball and fed JC who took it for a layup. And-1 layup for Randle on the break (sending Cousins to the bench), he missed the FT. He lost the ball trying to post up a guard. He screened for Ball, rolled to the hoop, Ball found him and Julius scored around AD. Lonzo drew a double and found him, Julius attacked with intention and was fouled at the rim, he made just one FT. Great D on the switch, smothering the smaller player on the drive and forcing a turnover. Great cut off JC’s drive and Clarkson found him wide open for the dunk. He stepped around Cousins and slapped a post entry pass away.

Clarkson -- -- Well, I was a bit leery about JC being able to handle the backup PG spot as he tends to have tunnel vision and that goes against the ball movement habits we want to build, but he handled it well in the second half. He was hot from the start, so Luke found a lot of minutes for him and that meant taking over the backup PG spot in the second half. One of the few guys to score early on in this one tonight. He was able to create to get into the paint for a series of scores as well as knock down a three for 13 points on 6-9 shooting in the first half. “Just trying to take the shots that are open, trying not to force it,” Clarkson said. In the second half, he didn’t let up. But he mixed in the scoring now with some setting up of teammates. This Clarkson is tough to guard. When he finds that passing/scoring balance it causes problems. It’s just rare we see it. Maybe if he is put at that backup PG role, he starts thinking pass more. I was skeptical, but it’s worth experimenting with again. “He was struggling in training camp. He was struggling in the preseason and he’s just kept working and working and keeps working,” Luke said. The Stats: He scored 24 points on 10-18 shooting (3-6 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 5 assists, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He attacked to his right and hit the baseline runner. He didn’t hit rim on a wing three. He got his man on his hip and hit the 12-footer from the left side. He iso’d, got into the paint, hung and hit the short one. He missed a pull-up 18-footer. He attacked off the kickout and scored a layup. He up-faked and attacked for a layup. He drained a three in transition when Ball kicked to him. He missed a turnaround in the paint. Second Half: He probed and banked in the runner when the help D didn’t commit. He broke down the D and hit Kuzma cutting weakside for the dunk. He swished the And-1 three, trailing the break, he made the FT for the 4-point play. Nice D to force an airball late in the shotclock. He missed a tough layup attempt as the big smothered him. He missed a runner. He probed and hit Kuzma with the interior feed for the score. He scored a lefty layup off the transition feed from Randle. Aggressive D and he drew a pushing foul after knocking a ball loose. He pulled up off the Randle screen and drained the big three to cut it to 3. He was blocked on a pull-up. He attacked in transition, drew the D and dumped it to Julius for the And-1 layup. He missed a wing jumper. He attacked the paint, drew the D and hit Julius cutting for the dunk. He missed a wing three. He showed the ball on a probe and it was easily swiped.

Bogut -- -- We went to Randle first as the C off the bench. Once Randle started having some brief problems with Cousins, Luke brought in Bogut in the second quarter. He got his only points off an extra pass from Kuzma and had a nice block on help D of Cousins. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 3 boards, 1 block and 1 foul in 9 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He dunked off the extra pass from Kuzma who lost his man with an up and under. Second Half: Great help D block of a Cousins drive.

Brewer -- -- Luke cycled through his bench looking for a combo to heat things up. Tonight, it wasn’t Brewer but his bench teammates that brought the spark. He got his only score on a layup after a nice change of directions. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards and no fouls in 9 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He crossed over to lose his man and scored a layup. He gambled for a steal and gave up a layup. Second Half: Aggressive attack off the three line and he drew the FTs, he missed both.

Ennis -- -- Really not feeling it right now with Ennis. Don’t think he provides much of anything for the team right now. Maybe after a lot of practice and finding some chemistry with a few players, but if you wanted… you could have had Nelson maybe as the backup PG now. Or possibly Ian Clark, who we talked to this summer. In any event, really don’t think he should be playing right now. Caruso’s defensive PPP in the preseason was in the 82nd percentile. I think you’ve got to give him a shot at the backup PG or you do more experimenting with JC because outside of some brief moments by Ennis with Zubac, he’s barely been a warm body out there this season. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 1 foul in 3 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: Lame drive trying to take on Cousins and he was easily rejected. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Hart -- -- In the preseason, he held opponents to 27% shooting. We need guys who can make stops and Luke was looking for a scrappy lineup. He went to Josh in the second half to fill that role. (Maybe too long because KCP looked cold later, but that’s only because Hart was mixing it up well enough that Luke kept him out there…they were a +21 in Hart’s 15 minutes of run). He had a big three and another score on a drive off an offensive board. Again, this is a benefit of JC at the PG. “I just try to come in and bring energy,” he said. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-3 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist and 1 foul in 15 minutes. He was a +15. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He hit JC for the three on the break. He hit the wing three in transition. He grabbed the long rebound, attacked and scored the layup. He missed an open corner three.

Walton -- -- Luke with a quick timeout after 3 minutes, Lakers down 6-0. Nance unsuccessful on several plays early on… Nance picked up his second foul with 5:35 left, so Randle came in Lakers trailing by 9… Lopez and Ingram out for Kuzma and Brewer, Lakers down 8. Kuz finally in, but Lonzo will be sitting soon… Randle at center instead of Bogut during that stretch… The Lakers trailed 34-22 after the first quarter… Randle, Kuzma, Brewr, Clarkson, Ennis to start the quarter… Pace completely in the Pelican’s favor. Lakers floundering badly… Lakers down 20 when Bogut came in… KCP in… Now Bogut, Kuzma, KCP, JC and Ball… They cut it to 14 after threes by JC and Kuzma… Nance in for Kuzma with under 4 minutes left, Lakers down 17… Ingram back in a few seconds later along with Lopez. So all starters back… Behind KCP, they cut it to 11… The Lakers trailed 68-55 at the half, giving up 65% shooting… Ingram gave up a couple And-1 fouls and sate for Brewer after 4 minutes, down 18… Nance and Lopez out for Bogut and Kuzma after 5 minutes… Hart in for Brewer midway through the quarter… Pope out for JC with 2:37, Lakers down 21… Ingram back in... Behind Kuzma and JC, they cut it to 11, 94-83 heading into the fourth… JC at the PG here. The Lakers cut it to 6… JC just killing it and they cut it to 3. Timeout Pelicans with 9:28 left… Down 2, Ball back in to go with our three first rounder lineup with JC and Randle… 5-point Laker lead with 5 to go… Up 2, he brought in KCP for Hart with 3:31 left… Timeout with 2:56 left, tie score 110-110... 11-0 Pelican run did the Lakers in during crunch time...

I think Ingram as an on the ball defender on the PG, with Ball playing off the ball on the weaker of the SG and the SF (with KCP or Hart defending the remaining player) is how we need to play this. Ingram is a much better perimeter defender at this point, while Ball is a much better off the ball defender.

In that way, the strangely compliment each other on D. We just have to use them the right way. Its why I think subbing Ball in for Ingram (at the time the Pelicans made their big run) was the wrong sub... should have kept Ingram in and put Ball in for Hart.

It would have been nice to get the W, but I'm glad the guys showed the heart and fight that they did. Like Worthy said after the game, there aren't moral victories in basketball ... but this is about as close as you can come to one.

This was a game, that a young team could not seal the deal on.

But, we all saw how the bench in the second half OUTPLAYED the first-half starters, I would love to see this group start:

PG: Ball
SG: Clarkson
SF: Kuzma
PF: Nance
C: Randle

ENERGY>>>>!

Bring Lopez, Pope and Ingram off the Bench...!

Luke's overcoaching did us in the end game. Why didn't he just stick with the scappy 5 that got us the lead?

ENERGY>>>>!

Bring Lopez, Pope and Ingram off the Bench...!

good lineup. but i don't like randle on the center.

Randle at center is a second half thing. He needs to be warmed up first to play center.

Luke's overcoaching did us in the end game. Why didn't he just stick with the scappy 5 that got us the lead?

The scrappy 5 salvaged this game for Luke.

Concerned about Luke; and the defense outside of that run. Allowing 70% shooting or whatever it was for a half is something that should not be happening against an NBA team.

Definitely need to play better D in the first halves. We're 18th in the league in points per 100 possessions despite those huge first halves. Kind of surprising really that we aren't worse. Hopefully, having some more minutes for KCP and Hart helps that, but guys have to get after it from the start.

If Randle is going to get a lot of his minutes at back-up center, that could ease our logjam at the 4. I also want to see Hart get more minutes. And yes, seeing JC at the point is one way that can happen.

And despite all the defensive emphasis at camp, we are allowing 119 points per game which is 27th worst in the league. Maybe the teaching ain't working? I want to fire Luke this early and hire Jeff Van Gundy to instill better defensive foundation on this guys. Much like how a Mark Jackson fixed the GSW team defensively before Kerr took them to the next level offensively.

I hate our style of play completely. This run and gun with zero defense from my standpoint is disaster. No control. Everyone are running and making turnovers like idiots. No shot selection at all. Frustrating to watch. I miss triangle so much. Comparing to this crap that was pure perfection.

Can't use points per game with the pace we play as a truly accurate defensive stat. We are running a transition at nearly twice the level of last year. We're going to have more possessions and more scoring. That's why I used points per 100 possessions. You have to do something to adjust for the high number of possessions and early clock scoring.

You can't look at points per game, such an outdated measure. The pace they play at is going to lead to more points naturally. See the Warriors: they give up a lot of points but are 1st or 2nd in defensive efficiency.

Nice hot take with JVG though, we haven't heard his name on overreactionground.net in a while.

On Point about Defense

Team is getting better, the good news

Young players are vastly underestimating how much energy and focus is needed to play good to excellent defense with the next step is learning how to be consistent. Hopefully their learning curve is a quick one

It will be interesting to see how consistent Randle will be this season

Will Ingram get his mental approach better to be an outstanding player

What will happened once all these young players are scouted and how they will adjust

Absolutely loved this game from Clarkson. Not only getting his scores but also giving Kuzma the ball when he's wide open. Showing much more maturity.

Ingram foul trouble
Hart was tired, since he hasn't played much. Wanted two ball handlers (Lonzo and JC).

Thanks, DB. My mindset was same as yours about Ennis and potentially adding Nelson when he became available.

If the FO were to waive Ennis, are we allowed to upgrade Caruso's contract to regular minimum rookie scale instead of 2-way to eliminate the games restriction for the season?
