That Small Ball… Down 10 in the fourth, the Lakers brought in a rested Julius Randle to run as the small ball center. Defensively, they started switching everything, bogging down the Wizards offense, and they tied it up after a 10-0 run.

Fast forward to a big three by Julius Randle with 20 seconds left. Fast forward again with the ball in Brandon Ingram’s hands and the floor spread (Lopez and Kuzma as the bigs now). Brandon Ingram attacked to his right, missed the drive but quickly bounced off the floor to tip in his miss with 0.7 to tie the game up.

Fast forward to Randle in John’s Wall’s jersey on the sideline on a switch, rejecting him out of bounds to get a shotclock violation. Fast forward again to Julius Randle roofing Wall’s drive to get the key stop with 11 seconds left.

It was only fitting he got the dunk shortly later with a few seconds in the game as we passed the ball around chasing Wizard defenders. One more stop and the Lakers took the W, 102-99.

This team has some scrappy stretches of ball on both ends. There was a little bit of everyone involved in this win. Lonzo setting the table all night. KCP with a big corner three. Ingram with 11 points in the fourth. Kuzma with a three.

But it was Randle doing the little things as the small ball center that pulled it all together. Great to see.

Ball -- -- I’m not going to dwell on all the trash talking heading into the game. Lonzo will have a target on his back. He doesn’t care and doesn’t get rattled. He may not have had his shot going tonight, but did he look like a teen-ager at all out there? I mean talk about poise through the fourth quarter and overtime. You absolutely trusted him with the ball to make the right decision again and again. That’s amazing if you step back and think about it. If you are just box score watching, you don’t see that at all. It kind of comes through in those 10 assists with just 1 turnover. This wasn’t an up-tempo game. Lonzo did have one of those long bomb passes, but he had a lot of great reads in the halfcourt. How about that skip pass to Kuzma for the three in O?. Or the set play to KCP in the corner for the other big OT three? Just great execution. Hard to overstate how steady he looked leading this team, despite not really being a scoring threat. “I like the shots I’m getting. They’ll go down,” Lonzo said. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-11 shooting (0-5 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 10 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 40 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: He hit Ingram on the leak out for a score. He blocked his man from behind to save a layup. He attacked off the three line and missed the runner (probably should have tried to finish with his left). He stripped the ball off Wall on his drive to get the stop. Sweet full-court pass to Nance for the And-1. He attacked and couldn’t finish the scoop. He had 4 assists and 4 boards at the half. Second Half: He attacked off the three line and set up Ingram for FTs. He walled off his man and Lopez blocked the shot. He missed a wide open three straight away. His pass was picked off trying to hit Nance through traffic. He found Lopez in the lane for a score and from three on consecutive possessions. He hit Nance rolling for the layup. He hit a floater in the lane. He missed a wing three. He was hit on a pull-up three in transition, he made two FTs. He missed a wing three next time down. He biffed a layup on the break. He was swatted out of bounds on the break. He pushed it out, didn’t go for a layup, but kicked it out to Randle for the open three to cut it to 1. Overtime: He missed another three, going to his left. He attacked off the three line with the clock low and scooped in the layup. Great skip pass off the two-man to hit Kuzma for the wing three. He missed a step-back three. He hit KCP in the corner for a three.

Lopez -- -- We went to him in the post a lot in this game. Our offensive execution at times struggled to get any flow, so maybe we were looking for that from him a little more. But we started out going right to him the first couple of possessions. It wasn’t very efficient. Despite all that, we held the line defensively out of the gates, which was also nice to see. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-8 shooting (1-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He posted up and missed the jumphook. He posted up from the other side and missed another one (Nance tipped in both of those to start the game). He hit a floater in the lane. He missed a turnaround in the paint. He missed a sideline three. He blocked a reverse. Second Half: He rumbled off the three line and drew FTs, he made both. He smothered a man with Ball to block the shot. He took a pass, spun and hit the floater. He hit a three in transition. Way short on a jumphook on iso in the post. His man beat him down court for a score.

Ingram -- -- He had 11 points in the fourth, putting the team on his shoulders a bit during that stretch. They needed it with Lonzo not shooting well. Of course, he had the big score to tie it in regulation. “It’s a play that we run in practice a lot, just open the floor,” he said. That’s all we did for his make with 0.7 seconds left. He attacked to his right, missed, bounced up before anyone else and tipped it in. Clutch finish. Having Kuzma out there at PF and Lopez for that play was key. Again, he let the game come to him early on. Didn’t force things and you saw the confidence build in that fourth. A couple passes off the mark with Lopez, but hopefully the two of them build on chemistry. It wasn’t there on a couple occasions, but I like seeing them work on that. Defensively, he started a little slow (some missed help reads or losing his man) but he got better as the game went along. How about that block on Gortat on a switch under the hoop? Young guys showed some fight. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 8-16 shooting (0-3 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls in 39 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He had Lopez wide open on the roll and threw the pass into the stands. He was rejected easily under the hoop on a soft finish attempt. He scored a layup around Gortat in transition a few seconds later. He got tapped on an open wing three. He attacked off the three line straight down the lane, showed it high, brought it down low and scooped it in. He missed a corner three. Called for offensive interference on the break. He sagged off his man and gave up a three. Second Half: Ball found him in the lane and he drew FTs trying to finish, he made both. He crossed over and scored the layup easily past Porter. He threw a pass out of bounds expecting Lopez to roll. He airballed a runner trying to attack off the dribble. He missed a 70-footer at the buzzer. He sank an open pull-up 17-footer. He lost the handle out of a timeout, turnover. He iso’d and missed the long pull-up. He grabbed a board, pushed it out, surveyed the floor, attacked on a couple long steps and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He blocked Gortat on the switch. He crashed the glass to keep a jumper alive and we hit a three off a kickout shortly later. He pushed out the board, pulled up and drained the FT jumper to tie it up. He attacked left and hit the pull-up elbow jumper. We got him the ball up high, he attacked to his right with the floor spread (shooters in), he missed but tipped it in with 0.7 to tie it up. Overtime: He hit Randle for the dunk after we broke the press.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- The vet in our lineup down the stretch. That’s crazy. Such a young squad closing. He took on the challenge defensively, but it was our switching D that locked things up. Part of that is also our guards having to D up bigger players. They held the line there. He had a big three in the fourth, but the bigger one from the corner off the set play out of a timeout. He had a couple steals in this game and probably a couple more deflections. That helped us get out on the break. A few turnovers off some sloppy passes, but I still like that he got 5 assists even if it wasn’t clean. Ball movement in the half court is only going to get better. Two strong outings for him to start the season. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-13 shooting (3-8 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 5 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 42 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He missed a transition wing three. Nice challenge on Wall to force an airball. He threw a pass into Lopez’s legs, turnover. He let his man go back middle off the screen and hit the open jumper. He sank a 20-footer on the catch and shoot coming off the screen. He grabbed the rebound, pushed out with speed and scored the layup. Not close on the 18-footer coming off the screen. Great reach around to poke the ball from Meeks. His two-man game pass was picked off and then he was dunked on. We set up a three for him out of a timeout and he swished. He missed a layup on the break as Ingram interfered. He attacked and fed Nance for the dunk. He missed a chuck from three. He missed a three on iso on a switch. Second Half: He blew a layup on the 3-on-2 break. He missed a wing three in transition. He made a tech FT. He was stripped on a drive. He picked off a lob, pushed it out and hit Nance for the layup. He deflected a pass to ignite a break. He got middle and hit Kuzma for the layup. He missed a 12-footer in the lane, we got it back to him and he drained the three instead. Nice strip from behind to prevent an easy score. Overtime: He missed a wide open three, had all day. Huge catch-and-shoot corner three to take a 1-point lead with a minute left.

Nance -- -- Great game from Nance, even if we didn’t see a sniff of him in our fourth quarter and OT. He started the game with back-to-back tip-ins of Lopez misses, just outworking his man. That was a sign of good things to come. Then he had a flurry of scores in the second quarter as teammates found him (among those a nice drive and dish from KCP to him for a dunk and another Lonzo bomb pass for an And-1 off a great seal by Nance). Loved seeing the two-man game working out the kinks with Nance. Felt like one of those rare times where we consistently executed that with him. He’s doing a very good job changing ends, as well. Much better than in preseason. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 8-10 shooting (2-3 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He sealed his man and tipped in a missed shot. Next trip down, same exact thing off another Lopez miss to start the game. Wild jumphook off poor position and he missed. He backed it out, quickly fired a long wing jumper and swished just as the shotclock went off. He drew FTs on the screen-roll, he made one. He dunked off the dive and dish from KCP. He hit on the screen-roll in the middle of the lane. He sealed the smaller man in transition and Lonzo hit him with the long feed for the And-1, he made the FT. He had 14 points on 6-7 shooting and 9 boards. Second Half: He missed the open elbow jumper. He scored a layup rolling with Ball on the two-man game. Called for an illegal screen. Good job changing ends off the steal by KCP and he earned the layup off it.

Kuzma -- -- Well, it wasn’t a pretty game for Kuzma, he got blocked more than anybody out there it seemed (he had some serious intentions on a couple dunk attempts that he couldn’t finish). He missed several threes down the stretch, as well. But he took the shots he needed to, always looked aggressive and eventually a big three in OT fell for him. I’ve said it before, but it’s worth stating again, but one thing that impressed me in summer league was that if you took away some of his three shooting, he still was able to make an impact. That was again the case tonight as he scratched out 16 points. When those threes start falling again? Look out. He was in on all the small ball down the stretch action as we switched and battled on D and then used him to space the floor on offense. That score by Ingram in regulation? You had Lopez and Kuzma out there to space. We trusted him defensively to switch and defend on an island against some tough players. He held his own. These rookies, man. They’ve got some game. Love that we gave him the huge minutes in the fourth and OT. Great experience and confidence builder. Hope that carries over, but I don’t think you have to worry about his confidence. He’s got two former college teammates on the Raptors in the next game. Light them up .The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-15 shooting (1-6 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 34 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He blocked his man on iso D. He missed the runner. He cut off the JC drive, took the pass and dunked. He hit the one-footed runner from the wing. He was blocked trying to cram over a big (he was going for a poster). He didn’t hit rim on a wing three. Second Half: He attacked baseline and couldn’t finish the reverse. He cut baseline off of JC’s drive, took the pass and reversed. He faked the handoff, attacked and was fouled on the throwdown attempt, he made both FTs. He posted up Porter, turned one way, went back the other and hit the short one. Nice challenge in the paint to get a stop. He then threw it away on the other end after a probe (can’t throw one at that angle). He was blocked in transition. He missed a sideline three on the kickout. He scored a layup off the two-man sequence with KCP. He missed an open 3 with 2:40 left. He was called for a weak travel on the perimeter. He missed a wing three on a kickout. Overtime: He swished a huge wing three off the skip pass from Lonzo. He crashed the glass to draw a foul (fouling Porter out) and regaining the possession. Offensive interference with 1:27 left. He missed a big corner three with 16 seconds left.

Clarkson -- -- It was a bit clunky tonight, but we shortened our rotations and let JC run the backup point. They kind of wing it quite a bit, which isn’t ideal. Hopefully, we’ll get some deeper execution into actual set plays and they become more efficient. Hopefully, they stick with the experiment. They just need more time and reps to build up the chemistry. We did see JC find Kuzma cutting baseline for a score. Those are the types of plays/chemistry that we need to see with more frequency so the offense doesn’t stall out like it did a bit tonight. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-8 shooting (1-3 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 4 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He attacked the missed steal attempt and drew FTs at the rim, he made one. He airballed a loose ball chuck trying to beat the shotclock. He picked Wall (or Wall lost the handle) and took it for the uncontested dunk. He iso’d in the post, had nothing, so he forced it and was blocked. Great extra pass to find Hart under the hoop for the layup. He got middle off the screen and hit Randle with the bounce pass for the layup. He split a double team, drew a third defender and hit a cutting Kuzma for the dunk. He missed a long chuck from three. He sized up his man and hit the three. Second Half: He broke down the D and fed Kuzma cutting baseline for the score. He iso’d, had the defender backing up and hit the easy 10-footer. He was stripped on a drive, turnover. He was called for a shove off ball. He iso’d and missed the wing three (had Hart open). He iso’d and fumbled it away. He missed a baseline pull-up.

Randle -- -- If there was a Draymond Green-like game from Randle, it was this one. Huge defensive plays in our small ball death lineup and also a clutch three with 20 seconds left. He had to switch on Wall a number of times and was making sure he didn’t let him get to his left. On one, he rejected him out of bounds getting a shotclock violation. Just ate him up and made him pick up his dribble. On the other, he roofed Wall’s drive, block the ball off of him to get one of the key defensive stops of the game. We didn’t bring Julius into the game in the second half until later in the fourth quarter. So he had plenty in the tank to help close. The Wizards struggled to adjust when we switched and their game fell into iso attacks that we snuffed out with some frequency. Offensively, he missed a couple chippies he usually makes, but he also knocked down a couple of perimeter jumpers that looked extremely smooth/confident with. None bigger than that 3 with 20 seconds left. We miss that down 4 and that’s the ball game. Clutch. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-7 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 9 boards, 1 assist, 3 blocks, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He iso’d and swished the step-back 16-footer, very nice. He threw down the oop on the break with Brewer. He didn’t spot a cutting Brewer, then missed the long turnaround fade on the baseline. He scored a layup off the two-man game with JC. Careless perimeter travel, just being lazy on a swing pass. Second Half: He fumbled a board out of bounds. He up-faked to lose his man, then choked the layup (layup the other way). Nice challenge on a drive on the other end and he got a stop. He drained a big three with 20 seconds left to cut it to 1. Overtime: He grabbed a board, pushed it down court, then lost the handle at the last second, turnover. He switched on Ball, made him pick up the dribble on the drive then rejected him badly out of bounds to get a shotclock violation. Great stop, he roofed Wall’s drive with 11.5 seconds left, looked like it was off Wall last, should be Laker ball. He dunked with 4.5 seconds left when the Wizards didn’t foul.

Bogut -- -- Briefly in the rotation early. We sat Lopez, then brought Bogut in at C, then used Randle and some Nance all in the first half. Only a couple minutes tonight. The Stats: He didn’t shoot or score and was a +4 in 2 minutes. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: In briefly for a rebounding situation with 12 seconds left.

Brewer -- -- At one point, I think we had him at PF in a super small ball lineup. Luke was really experimenting. Not much impact in this one from Corey. He robbed Kuzma of an assist just before the buzzer dropping a bounce pass on the break. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 1 assist, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 9 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He lobbed to Randle on the break for the dunk. He couldn’t handle the great bounce pass from Kuzma on the break, and that blew a sure score at the end of the quarter. Good challenge on the switch to get a stop. Second Half: He charged in transition. He attacked the paint and couldn’t flip it in.

Hart -- -- In the rotation as we sat Ennis and Caruso to use Clarkson as the backup PG. He scored his only points on a layup on some good Laker ball movement. Defensively, it’s rare when you don’t see him in on a good challenge. He seems to always get a hand up and put in a close challenge. A lot of that tonight as well as his usual good rebounding. Very steady ball, just need to knock down those threes. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 5 boards, 1 steal and 1 foul in 16 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He ate his man up on iso D, took the ball from him and immediately outlet for a breakaway score. He scored a layup after kicking it out and getting it back under the hoop a couple passes later. He got tapped on a wing three. Second Half: Great challenge to force a miss in the post. Bigger man can’t back him down on another post attempt and he missed. He missed a wing three.

Walton -- -- Luke shortened up his rotation in this one, starting to dial it in just a little more, and the Lakers played with a little more consistency early on… The Lakers opened with a 10-4 lead… Clarkson and Bogut in for Ball and Lopez, Lakers up 12-11… Kuzma in for Nance with 3:41 left up 1… Brewer in for Ingram… Timeout Lakers up 19-14. Randle in at C, Hart in for KCP. So JC as the PG… The Lakers led 23-18 after the first… KCP in for Brewer… Lakers having issues with Meeks and trailed by 3… Lonzo back in for JC… Nance back in for Julius at the C… Lopez in to match with Gortat… All starters back in… Lakers down by 7, timeout… An 11-3 Laker run to take the lead back (Nance scoring a series of buckets off great passes)… The Lakers trailed 49-45 at the half. The Lakers were 2-11 from three… Down 3, he brought in Kuzma to go with Nance at C… Wall looking to impose himself on the game. Key stretch… Kuzma, Brewer, Ball, JC and Hart, uber small ball down 7… Ingram now in for Ball… The Lakers trailed 79-69 heading into the fourth… Lopez, Kuzma, Ingram, Hart and JC. Some really weird rotations… Offense stalling out… He brought in Ball for JC down 10 with 10:30 to go… Randle finally in with 7:45 left in the half to go with Kuizma, Ingram, KCP and Ball down 10… They trimmed it down to 2… They tied it up and forced the timeout with 3:26 left with the 10-0 run… Big three by Randle, we then fouled, Wizards missed one and we trailed by 2 with 12.5 left. Timeout and the ball… So Lopez, Kuzma, Ingram, KCP and Ball in for the shot attempt. Ingram to iso, he missed but followed tipped it in with 0.7 to tie it up… Same unit it to get the stop. Overtime… Randle, Kuzma, Ingram, KCP and Ball in for OT… Lakers up 1 with 15 seconds left. Timeout Wizards with the ball… Lakers get a stop with 11 seconds left... Randle with a dunk with 4.5 when the Wizards failed to foul. Lakers up 3 timeout Wizards…

Thanks DB. In a season where progress is so important and the young kids showing promise, it was exciting to see the lakers compete and hold a talented wizards offense to 99 points including OT period.

Other than the clippers game, the lakers have done a good job just playing hard and finding ways to stay in games and even close out a couple. The clippers are off to a hot start so that’s fine, just keep showing up

Feels like Luke and the team are learning something every game. Hopefully, the progress continues.

Thanks DB!

I was hoping for (but certainly did not expect) a win tonight - glad our rookies are finding ways to contribute this early in the season!

Thanks DB!

I did not expect the Lakers to win this game. Until the defense showed up! Kudos to Randle for what he did late game!!

Hart showing he can take on bigs defensively on a switch in this game and the last. He uses leverage and effort amazingly well in those situations.

Yeah, he plays so much bigger than he is.

Thank you!

I think Hart was a -12, not a +12.

Fixed. Not an easy game to cover between Dodgers innings for a while tonight, then OT. Wouldn't be surprised if I had a few more typos.

Yeah, that's what I saw too. It was a little trippy seeing someone in the game thread constantly lament we weren't posting Lopez when we absolutely did and he generated nothing for us. Lopez looks like he's lost a little confidence. He had a look from three he passed on and wasn't looking for his shot as much as I'd expect a 20 point a game scorer to. I'm sure he'll find his offense again, he's too talented a scorer not to, but he's been a disappointment so far to start.

Fun game in the fourth. Really great to see Randle continue his energy from the last game and really lock down, and very nice to see Ingram make some big plays in the fourth. Ingram missing his decent looks in previous games made him look worse than he should be. Hopefully the team can build on this and Ball, Kuz, and Lopez can all find their three ball again.

Thanks DB.

Great game by the kids. The biggest thing is it felt like a real team effort. More cohesive on both ends of the court. Some of that is guys like Hart and KCP who bring excellent defensive positioning and effort on D. It really helps a team to have guys who are a net positive on the defensive side of the ball when they are in. Far too often over these too many years of losing regularly we have seen very little defensive effort and very little defensive teamwork.

This game also showed we don't have to hit lights out to win. Lots of missed open looks yet we still scratched out a win against one of the better teams in the East. It was a very fun win stuffing it in the face of the Wizards team who collectively seemed like they thought they needed to gang up on a 19yr old rook. Zo takes all of that in stride as well as any rookie I have ever seen. Cool cat on the court, that big target on his back is obvious in how other teams vets go after him, but he keeps his head and doesn't seem to let that bother him much. He will be a guy we can count on to run our team efficiently for many, many years to come.

Yeah, he plays so much bigger than he is.
FO is starting to build a good foundation for a roster with championship pedigree

Hart also already has an NBA ready body, which greatly helps on defense. Guy is a rock. Unfortunately guys like Zo, Kuz, and BI are a bit of a ways off from having that type of strength.

Lets hope the lock down defense carries over. Nice to see BI with another good game and Randle too. Great rookie class!!!

Thanks DB. This win takes a bit of the sting away from the Dodgers loss.

I will take 2-2 and we could easily be 3-1.

DB, you forgot to mention Lonzo's great offensive rebound and quick feed to Randle for the back breaking 3.

That is a winning play made by a winner which is what Lonzo Ball is.

Just a bit, that was a gut punch at the Ravine....
