Robert Guillaume, 'Benson' Emmy Winner, Dies at 89
Loved that character. He was very cutting edge at the time and was portrayed by the amazing Robert Gillaume. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

Nooo....I loved that show.
Another one of those comedies from the late 70s to mid 80s that I enjoyed.
Gonna miss Robert Guillaume.
He was a good actor besides being Benson.

Oh damn.
So versatile. For example, I saw him as the Phantom back when it was playing at the Ahmanson theater in the 90's. Although that stint wasn't received well critically, he could really sing. One of my favorite and unsung roles of his was playing assistant district attorney Fred in Seems Like Old Times. He had such a great way with that deadpan delivery of his. Loved his work.

I don't know how many knew he had a fabulous voice. He stared in The Phantom Of The Opera. That's quite a step up from Benson. RIP

I never watched Benson but I did see him on Soap(same character Benson was the spinoff) and various other TV shows and movies through the years.

That's a great call on "Seems Like Old Times." That's one of my favorite comedies, actually. Great chemistry between Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase, and awesome casting, too, with Guillaume, George Grizzard, and Harold Gould all playing supporting roles very well. And since "The Golden Girls" is my favorite TV comedy series ever, I must note that Harold Gould had a memorable recurring role on that show (playing Rose's boyfriend Miles), and George Grizzard also played Blanche's late husband on an episode where he re-appears (having apparently faked his death), but it was revealed to be a dream.
I don't remember "Soap" since I was born in '76, but I do remember seeing some episodes of "Benson", where he was obviously outstanding. And I hadn't realized that he was such a great stage actor as well. A very, very talented actor he was. |
