Rip City Rumble… “They got real confident, and that’s when you got trouble on your hands,” Damian Lillard said afterward.

The Blazers started out on fire, hitting their first 6 threes on the way to a 41-point first quarter. Luke didn’t like the Lakers focus early on, so he had them apply full-court pressure defensively. Their intensity started to pick up. They would cut the 18-point lead to 4 at the half.

After a 10-0 run early in the third quarter, the Lakers had the lead and several Blazers in foul trouble, as well. Some nice adjustments defensively on the screen-roll rotations to help get stops.

Now we had a dog fight.

Lopez, Ingram, Kuzma throwing punches offensively. The Lakers bench scratching and clawing on D. It was not without casualties, however, as Larry Nance broke his left hand in a scramble under the hoop.

After some error-free ball earlier in the game, the turnovers hit the Lakers in the last couple of minutes. A 3-point lead was erased to trail by 1.

A running hook by Kuzma took a 1-point lead. The Blazers bounced back to lead by 3 with 18 seconds left after a Lopez foul. Timeout.

KCP swished a turnaround wing three on the sideline out of bounds play. Tie game with 15 seconds.

Lillard iso’d and hit a long three over Ingram with 0.7. After a timeout, Kuzma would hit the front of the rim on a dead straight three from the wing, and the Lakers fell 113-110.

“Give them credit. They hit some big shots,” Luke said.

Ball -- -- A passive first half in this one, really not taking the game to the opponent. More of a feel-out first half. You were hoping he’d pick it up in the second half, but it never happened. Very few notes for Lonzo in this game, which is about as indicative as you can get in looking at his impact. He did have a couple of nice blocks in the paint. “Hardest thing for young players is just the consistency when you play so many games,” Luke said, mentioning they wanted him to be more aggressive attacking the defense. His team D was a little lacking on the screen-rolls. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 3 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 28 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He hit Lopez off the two-man game for a score. He fumbled a ball away after a timeout. He hit Lopez on the leakout for the clear-path foul. He missed a pull-up to his right, but kept it alive to Kuzma. He got backdoored for a layup. Nice advance pass to Ingram for the layup in transition. He was blocked on a slow gather three attempt. He got into the paint after a scramble and lobbed to Lopez for the score. Second Half: He rejected Lillard badly. Looked like he was in on another block in the paint.

Lopez -- -- He had 17 points in the first half, Nurkic had 20. To be fair, our team D off the screens wasn’t good. Lopez had to respect the guards and needed support behind him. It picked up in the second half. Some good work running the floor in this game. I know the Nets were among the fastest paces last year, but he was running well tonight. He worked the post extremely well tonight, showing his range of moves. Reggie Miller was right talking about the Kevin McHale-like work in the post. Lopez was working the up and unders, the leaners and mixed in a big three, as well, late in the game. He did, unfortunately, get tangled up for an away-from-the-ball foul with 18 seconds left to give up FTs. Not a vet move there. Still, strong ball from Brook tonight on the road. That kept the Lakers in the mix all night. The Stats: He scored 27 points on 9-15 shooting (1-4 from three, 8-9 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He missed a wing three off a horns sequence to start the game. He missed an easy one on a drive. He hit an elbow one-hander. He drew the clear-path foul on the full-court pass from Lonzo, he made both FTs. He missed a short one in the post. He finished the lob from JC off the weave. He grabbed a loose ball and hit the And-1 floater, he made the FT. He missed a wing three, short. Quick swing through on the baseline to draw FTs, he made both. He worked the post, going up and under to score the layup. Low position on the rim run and he scored the quick jumphook. He finished the interior lob from Ball. Second Half: He missed the one-hander from the FT line. Quick attack baseline and he was fouled on the reverse, he made one FT. He rejected a floater in the paint. He attacked off the three line and shoveled it to Nance for a dunk. Nice help D on the baseline to trap and force a timeout. He posted up and hit the jumphook. He drew FTs attacking the paint, he made both. He pumped and swished a wing three. He missed a deeper three next time down. He worked the post and hit the leaning turnaround jumper. He threw a pass away trying to hit a cutter. He got tangled up with Nurkic to give up a foul with 18 seconds left down 1.

Ingram -- -- Definitely showing more and more ability to take guys off the dribble and finish at the rim. That length on the finishes around the rim is tough to defend. He just has to watch when he’s drawing a crowd and look to make the open pass. There were a couple of moments where he ball stopped because he didn’t want to take the jumper, but a reasonable two-way game from him. Wish we could have gotten that last stop against Lillard. “I don’t think it was a good contest at all,” Ingram said of his challenge at the end. We kept Lillard to a long three, but that’s a tough position for a young guy anyway. Good experience. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-11 shooting (0-1 from three, 4-6 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He swished a pull-up 19-footer. He attacked on iso and was swatted. He attacked the paint and was rejected at the rim again (going to have to pass those off). He missed a wing three. Good rotation to deflect a pass under the hoop. Quick attack off the advance pass from Ball and he used his length for a layup. He got to the rim but missed the wild finish. Quick attack to his right at the end of the quarter and he flipped in a layup over the D. Second Half: He hit the wing jumper from behind a screen. He drew three fouls in our first few possessions and got FTs on a leaner on one, he made one FT. He spun in the paint and missed the turnaround. He faced up a smaller defender and hit the 16-footer. He iso’d on Nurkic and drew FTs (the fourth foul he’s drawn this quarter), he made both. Off the mark on a lob on a drive. He got a switch, sized up the big and attacked aggressively to draw FTs, he made one. He missed a half-court three attempt at the buzzer. Not close on a pull-up jumper as the offense stalled.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- A huge three by him to tie it up with 15 seconds left. That made up for a couple misses earlier, including a big miss on the baseline jumper with 32 seconds left. We probably could have also gone with KCP on Lillard on that final shot, but Ingram held his own enough. I think this is the sort of average type of KCP game we will see. Scratch out the 14 points on some threes and in transition off steals. I like that he’s showing some clutchness on the set plays we’ve run for him at the end of games. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-10 shooting (2-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He probed and swished a wing pull-up jumper. He was stripped in the middle of the paint. He missed a wing three. He stole a ball on the perimeter and took it the distance for the spinning layup. He attacked from the wing and drew FTs, he made both. He hit Nance rolling for the layup. He couldn’t finish a layup on a drive. Second Half: McCollum ended up on his butt and KCP swished the open three. He gave up a 4-point play. He missed a forced pull-up on the next possession. He swiped an inbounds pass out of a timeout and took it the distance for a layup. He traveled with no call, then threw it away on the break. He missed a three off the handoff. He missed a baseline fade with 32 seconds left.

Nance -- -- He broke his left hand in the second half. “Obviously, I feel terrible for him. He’s been playing so solid for us,” Luke said. He’s really been embracing the defensive and hustle plays. This looked like it occurred under the hoop while challenging a shot. Just a flukish injury. I thought Nance’s help D in this game really helped tighten the screws as the game went along. Offensively, he scored on some finishes at the rim off setups from teammates. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-4 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 block and 4 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He kept a possession alive knocking it off a man. He gave up an offensive board which led to a three. He missed a floater off the two-man game. He scored a putback. He scored a layup when KCP found him rolling. He went to the floor for a loose ball tie up. Second Half: He was fouled on the defensive glass for FTs, he made one. Great rotation to get Nurkic’s fourth foul on a charge. He dunked off the drive and dish from Lopez. He rejected a shot out of bounds.

Kuzma -- -- “Just left it a little short,” Kuzma said of the attempt to tie it with 0.7. Good experience for him tonight with a couple of key possessions in the final minute. He missed that three, but he had hit one of those running hooks of his with a minute to go to give the Lakers a 1-point lead. Reggie Miller touted Kuzma’s skills as he entered the game, Kyle didn’t disappoint. He reeled off a flurry of scores on his way to 11 points in the half. He added another 11 in the second half. He balled like we’ve seen all summer. He knocked down jumpers. He attacked the paint with speed for scores around help defenders. His first step sometimes has guys nailed to the floor. Even in transition, though, like we saw tonight, he will push it up court with speed, step on the gas and score. Perhaps he gets the start in the next one, Randle gets some PF minutes, as well, and we maybe work Deng in for a few minutes, but I’m guessing it will be a few more minutes with Bogut at the C spot instead of Deng. We’ll see. The kid is going to have to battle the bigger, stronger players (like he did with Davis tonight). The Stats: He scored 22 points on 10-17 shooting (1-5 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He up-faked at the three line to lose his man, attacked the paint like he was going to throw down and scored the And-1 layup around the help, he made the FT. He scored a putback off the Lonzo tip. He posted up, spun baseline and scored the And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He missed an 18-footer on iso. He missed a wing three. He blocked a shot on iso D. He grabbed a board, pushed out with speed and scored with his left on a drive to his left. Quick attack off the three line and he flipped in a layup high off the glass (could have been an And-1). He missed a sideline three. Second Half: He missed a short baseline pull-up. He missed a wing three. He took a pass at the elbow, attacked, got contact and powered in the layup. Quick first step to blow by his man at the three line and score a layup. The Blazers posted him up on the other end for a score by Davis. He got the stop on Davis on one end, then hit the three on the pick and pop on the other. He sank the pull-up 17-footer. He couldn’t handle an interior feed. He missed a floater with the clock low. He lost the handle out of a timeout, turnover. With the clock low, he hit a running hook off glass with 1:08 left to take a 1-point lead.

Randle -- -- Not sure what Luke does with the rotation. Could start Randle, pull him a little early for Kuzma to get him some rest, then bring him back at the backup C to run with Kuz. We’ll need to see how he keeps the intensity with the bigger minutes. “We just got to keep trucking,” Randle said. The second unit tonight helped get the Lakers on track. In the fourth, we struggled a little with the Blazers size. Feels like our small ball guys can stick with the bigger players, but they usually need a few possessions to realize they have to do their work before their men get the ball or before the shot goes up. Offensively, only one shot for him in the second half. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-6 shooting to go with 6 boards, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He walked into a 16-footer and swished it. Wow, looked like a great help D block at the rim, but he was called for the foul. He attacked the paint and hit the running jumphook. Great challenge on a small on the switch, he then got the board, pushed it out with speed and missed a tough floater (looked great until the shot selection). He tracked down a bad pass in the corner, attacked and scored a layup. He attacked to his right and went up and under for a layup. He gave up a layup on the other end. Second Half: He missed a long step-back wing jumper with the clock low. Horrible advance pass that was easily picked off and we gave up a layup the other way. He blocked a shot but the Blazers recovered and scored.

Clarkson -- -- He got into the midrange early on and attacked the paint under control for scores. Really liked his midrange jumper tonight. That’s back to being automatic again. With the passing and the midrange, he really is looking a bit more like when he was at his best as a rookie. Definitely liked the control offensively from him, especially the 4 assists with no turnovers. Defensively, he was serviceable but seems to always have a couple of the bigger mistakes we see on that end. We’ve got some good defenders on that bench unit, though, so those squads can have some stretches of lockdown D. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 6-9 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 4 assists and 2 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He attacked a seam and hit the short runner. He missed a wing pull-up jumper. He missed a floater attacking a crowd. He sank a pull-up working off the high screen. Slow probe baseline and he reversed. He lobbed to Lopez off the weave. He lost his man off the screen and hit the pull-up jumper. Second Half: He ballwatched and gave up a layup. He attacked quickly for a two-for-one layup. He drained a pull-up wing jumper off the screen. He attacked off the three line and drew FTs, he missed both, however. Wild pull-up three in transition, not close. He attacked the paint and drew FTs, he made both.

Brewer -- -- He got his only scoring off a curl into the lane, which he flipped in. He kind of got robbed on a pushout in which he tripped over a Blazer with no foul call. All those little things add up in a one-shot game. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 14 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: Bad lob pass to Randle who was able to recover. Second Half: He curled into the lane off the handoff and flipped in a layup. Nice help D block in the paint. He tripped over a bigman on a pushout off a steal, turnover, but should have been a foul.

Hart -- -- Offensively, he couldn’t knock anything down. Defensively, he improved as the game went along. Dude just battles on that end and makes things happen. Guys try to size him up and think they can take him and he’s right in their face on challenges most of the time. That three ball is vital for him. We are in desperate need of shooters. His defense will keep him on the court, but that shot may determine how many minutes. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 0-4 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 steals, 1 block and no fouls in 14 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He missed an open corner three. He missed a tricky layup around a couple defenders in transition. Not close on an elbow pull-up jumper. He stripped the ball away from a Blazer trying to go behind his back with the ball on him on the break, he then pushed it out and drew FTs on the other end, he made both. He missed a wing three. He recovered to reject a shot out of bounds from behind. Second Half: Good challenge with Brewer, they got the stop, Hart pushed out and hit JC who got fouled. He slapped a pass away for a stop.

Walton -- -- The Lakers trailed 14-6 after 4 minutes. Poor D… Down 8 when Nance sat with foul trouble for Kuzma midway through the quarter… JC in for Ball, Randle in for Lopez down 5… Brewer and Hart in to go with Randle, Kuzma and JC. Quick timeout after they gave up an open three… Blazers not missing from three (6-6)… The Lakers trailed 41-25 after the first quarter… Kuzma playing well, getting to the rim for scores… Lakers applying full-court pressure… KCP back in for Hart, Lakers down 13… Subs midway through the quarter to get Nance, Lopez and Ball back in to go with KCP and JC down 13… Ingram back in for JC with the Lakers down 6… Nice scoring stretch by Lopez, but same with the Blazers big, Nurkic… Nance out after loose ball foul, Lakers down 4 with 36 seconds left. Kuzma in… The Lakers trailed 66-62 at the half. The Lakers were 0-9 from three but had just 2 turnovers in the first half… They tied it up shortly into the third quarter when the timeout came… Lakers in the bonus early because of Ingram drawing fouls… A 10-0 Laker run to lead by 6… Nurkic picked up his fourth foul and had to sit. This was on a help D rotation by Nance that we were late on over and over in the first half… Lakers up 5 when Nance sat with four fouls for Kuzma with 3:45 left… JC in for Ball… They quickly lost the lead… Randle in with 1:56 in the third, Lakers down 1… The Lakers trailed 87-85 heading into the fourth… He went with the Randle, Kuzma, Brewer, Hart, JC lineup. Feisty on D… They led by 5 when the timeout came with 7:08 left… Ingram in for Brewer… They quickly trailed by 2 and Luke called a timeout. Randle a bit too small for Nurkic… They had a 1-point lead on a Kuzma drive, but gave up back-to-back scores. Timeout down 3 with 18 seconds left. They hit KCP with an inbounds for the wing three to tie it with 15 seconds left… Timeout Blazers. Now we needed one stop… Randle in for Lopez, Ingram on the ball. Can’t get the stop…

Thanks DB.

Good effort. Perspective: At least they didn’t get blown out like last season in similar situations.

-defense great other than the first.
-lonzo needs to attack the defense more.
-Luke rotations still need to improve.

Re: Hart, I really don't like his shot selection. This team in general just loves its midrange shots. Hart, KCP, Lopez, and Ingram are all noteworthy in how frequently they take contested midrange jumpers. I know the offense is a WIP, but still.

Thanks DB!

This time we brought a dog fight in Portland. Close game. Won't be long before the Lakers learn how to win a game like this. Even in Portland.

Disappointed with the loss. We had good chance to win it.

Great effort and D in some parts of the game by the players. Disappointed with Lonzo and his effort. He didn't show anything tonight.

Nets game is must win game now.

Lets go LAKERS

Good effort by the team by the team but fell short of the defensive intensity that they had with Detroit.

Glad you are back - DB

Good to see that they are finally incorporating Lopez in more offensive sets

Kids will soon learn to value every possession. There were a few wild sequence where both teams were extremely careless with the ball in consecutive possessions where excellent opportunities were missed.

As shared by Pops in his interview on TNT (great and funny interview), every team makes mistakes throughout the game - it how one reacts to the mistakes (paraphrased, to the best of my demented memory)

The passive Alonzo is pissing me off. Dude get your head out of your ass! If Ball had been even a little aggressive and made Lillard work on the defensive end he may not have made that end of game shot.

That length on the finishes around the rim is tough to defend. He just has to watch when he’s drawing a crowd and look to make the open pass.

Thanks, DB.
It was a great game. A heartbreaker for sure, but a great and fun game.

This team's got character. Players are always fighting for the ball, defending hard and running up and down the court. I can't complain on that.

We're headed towards the right direction.

Welcome back DB!

Portland's always been a house of horrors for the Lakers. That's why I was really impressed with the grit and effort of the team. Ok, Zo was MIA, unaggressive and rarely involved. It seemed like he hit a wall and didn't bounce back up.

Prior years' teams would've folded after being blitzed in the 1stQ, but these guys ramped up the pressure and battled until Lillard took over at the end and the Lakers still hunting for a true go-to guy.

Gotta luv Kuz. Very polished, very skilled. Brook was excellent, too.

Thanks, DB!

Three things - take away any one of these and we have a good chance at win:
* Lopez fouling Nurkic at the end of the game
* Missed free throws
* Luke sending Brook back into the game when Nurkic came back in the fourth.

I was thinking at the start of the fourth that I am starting now to understand what Luke is doing and it is starting to bring results. Being competitive against Portland is something we all only hoped for during the summer, I think. Now we hunger for more.
I think Luke needs to be a bit more flexible with his subs. Keep BI with the second unit instead the "I don't shoot" Brewer. He can surely play some four minutes a game more. And play JC with the starters when Ball plays as if he is asleep.

All in all still a fun game. The youngsters just need to learn to win these.

I felt Luke missed a good coaching opportunity to sit Lonzo when he wasn't making himself a factor on offense in that fourth quarter. Sit him down for a couple minutes and let him know that it's time he makes himself more involved in the offense. It wasn't like Clarkson was that bad. The Lakers down the stretch were not executing any plays effectively with practically no movement off the ball for Ball. The Blazers really took them to school in the last few minutes to take back the lead.
