The Changing of the Guards… There was plenty of talk about the guard matchup heading into this one.

While the press wanted to focus on D’Angelo Russell’s homecoming vs. Lonzo Ball, it was Brook Lopez who stood out against his former team, dropping 34 points to go with 10 boards.

The pace was quick to start, then settled in. The Lakers tried to get separation, the Nets kept it close. At halftime, L.A. led by 9 with Kyle Kuzma scoring 17 points on just 8 shots.

It was Kuzma’s first start of many more to come in his NBA career. He did not disappoint.

All three of the Lakers starting front court finished with double-doubles. All three combined to hit all 9 of the Lakers threes (Lopez had 6).

L.A. could never really pull away from the Nets – the Lakers fouling defense sending the Nets to the line again and again – but they kept them from striking distance, closing out the Nets 124-112. This was definitely one of those W’s you have to come away with.

Ball -- -- He was aggressive from the start, attacking the paint with speed. He definitely attacked into crowds. As a result, he struggled to finish. With his length and ability to get up, you’d think he’d finish better on some of those. I imagine in time, he will. “I don’t think he can be too aggressive,” Luke said. Didn’t really like his floor general work down the stretch. We had a small ball situation with Lopez having a huge advantage down low. We let the Nets get away with it again and again until finally deciding to collapse the D that way. Good job with the 7 assists and no turnovers. Just wish he could have finished much better when he got that speed into the offensive zone. “It’s only been nine games. I like where we’re headed,” Lonzo said. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-15 shooting (0-3 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 7 assists, 2 steals and 4 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +22. The Action: Quick chuck from three on the first possession and he missed. He quickly pushed out in transition a few seconds later and hit the short floater. He set up Kuzma for the layup off the two-man game. He attacked a crowd and missed. He attacked full court with speed and missed the finish. He hit Lopez on the pick and pop for the three. He attacked the paint with speed and dumped it off the Lopez for the dunk. He probed and didn’t hit iron on a floater. He stripped a big under the hoop. He attacked strong to his right and reversed with his left. He fouled a three shooter. Great hesitation fake, but he couldn’t finish at the rim. He attacked with speed but couldn’t finish at the rim again. He had 4 points on 2-9 shooting, 3 boards, 2 assists and 2 steals. Second Half: Wow, cheap third foul as Russell grabbed him on the layup finish. He kicked out to Lopez for the three. He missed a floater from the FT line. He missed a wing three. He was rejected badly on the layup attempt. He attacked and missed a layup. They gave him the midrange so he pulled up and hit the And-1 18-footer, he missed the FT. He missed a three instead of giving the ball to Lopez in the post. He lobbed to Randle rolling for the finish. Finally, he went to Lopez in the post for the dunk.

Kuzma -- -- With the small PFs on the Nets, it was and easy decision to go with Kuzma. He got the start (learning about it just before the game) and promptly led the Lakers with 17 points in the first half on only 7-8 shooting. He had no issues with the rebounding against the Nets smaller lineups and led the Lakers there. If you watched him in Summer League, he put up big rebounding numbers like this. “He plays with energy, he plays with such a great motor, he fits in with everyone else,” Lopez said of his new PF. I’m hoping we start to see that chemistry with Ball develop again (it may be a little trickier to get down court quickly with Lopez’s rebounding, but we’ll see). They ran a nice screen-roll early on. Hope we see Kuz a little more of a focal point offensively as they get more time together. “Front court did a good job being aggressive on both ends of the court,” Luke said. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 8-11 shooting (1-3 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 13 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 39 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: He powered in a layup off the two-man game with Ball. He missed a corner three. He grabbed the jumpball tap, turned and scored the layup. He faked a handoff, stepped on the gas and scored the layup. He drained a three on the kickout from Ingram. He scooped up a loose ball, pushed it up court, probed and took it to the rim for the layup (great screen by Lopez on that, taking out multiple defenders with body and arms). He took the drive and dish from KCP and scored the layup. He attacked off the three line and drew FTs at the rim, he made both. He iso’d at the top of the key, spun and scored a layup. Second Half: He attacked baseline and hit Ingram cutting opposite baseline for the slam. He missed a three in transition. He up-faked, attacked, spun in the paint and drew FTs, he made both. He missed an open three. Wow, thought he drew the charge call, nope. He leaked out and took the outlet for a layup.

Lopez -- -- A couple of big back-to-back scoring games. He really wasn’t not looking like himself until these past couple of games. Last night was some exceptional post work. Tonight, Lopez was on fire from three and started cranking them up and knocking them down (he’d go 6 of 9). He had 23 points in the second half with a lot of those threes coming in the third quarter. The Nets would go small and eventually we’d figure it was wise to finally get the ball to Lopez in the post, where he did some more damage and prevented anything crazy from happening late in the game. Everyone is focused on D’Angelo against his old team, while Lopez dropped huge numbers against his team. He definitely enjoyed cooling off his shooting hand and looking at the Nets bench. How about that rebounding? A strong 34-10 double-double. Some pretty good passing in those one, too, with a couple nice assists to Ennis cutting. The Stats: He scored 34 points on 13-23 shooting (6-9 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 2 assists, 3 blocks and 3 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +16. The Action: He swatted a drive. He hit a three off the pick and pop. He missed a wing three in early offense. He dunked off the drive and dish from Ball. Not close on a turnaround in the post. He went around Russell in the post and was fouled by the help as powered in the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He missed a one-hander in the paint. He missed a turnaround. He missed a jumphook over the smaller defender. JC found him on the roll for the And-1 jumphook, he made the FT. He had 11 points on 4-10 shooting. Second Half: He attacked across the lane, took contact and hit the short one. He sank a three straight away. Bad bounce pass on the break, turnover. He swished another three on a kickout. He swished a wing three with a couple seconds on the shotclock. Another three off a horns sequence on his next touch. He didn’t hit rim on his next three attempt. He faced up on an inbounds and hit the sideline three. He fouled a three shooter. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He hit Ennis backdooring his man with a bounce pass from the high post for the reverse. Forced pass, turnover. He took the post feed, Ennis cut and Lopez found him again for a layup. He missed a one-hander from the elbow. He missed a point-blank tip in. He grabbed the Lonzo miss and dunked. Finally a post-up and he hit the jumphook. He took a post feed and dunked with ease.

Ingram -- -- Love seeing him knock down the threes. He made both he attempted tonight. Combine that with getting to the line (and, um, making them) and that’s how you get up to those bigger scoring numbers. All three off our starting front court players had double-doubles. Perhaps, with Nance out they realized they’d all have to chip in. Love seeing that rebounding from Ingram. Favorite play, however, was probably that chase down shotblock in the first half. Big board numbers, a great block and the 18 points? Got to love that. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-13 shooting (2-2 from three, 2-6 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a +17. The Action: He sized up his man and attacked for a layup. He sank a jumper from the top of the key off the Lopez screen. He attacked in transition and drew FTs, he made one. He attacked a crowd and was rejected. He hustled back on D, though, and rejected a man. He pushed out, missed a layup and a tip, but was fouled. He faced up and missed the wing jumper. Wild pass out of a timeout, right out of bounds. He took the swing pass and hit the wing three. He attacked baseline, drew Kuzma’s man and kicked to him for the open three. Second Half: He missed an open elbow pull-up. He telegraphed a pass, turnover. He cut baseline and Kuzma hit him for the dunk. He attacked left, went back to his right and hit the short runner. He missed a 20-footer. He grabbed the loose ball, pushed it out and hit KCP with a bounce pass for the layup. He choked a layup on a drive. He iso’d and drew FTs at the rim, he missed both, ugh. He attacked and hit the pull-up fade at the FT line with the shotclock low. He was fouled trailing the break, he made one FT. He sank a wing three.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He had one of the plays of the game with a behind-the-back dribble to change directions on a defender, the then drew the D and threaded a nice pass to Kuzma for the score. He does everything at a hundred miles per hour, so you can imagine how that looked. He finished the night with 5 assists, none better than that one. Not a lot of scoring for him. All of it was done in transition. The Stats: The Action: He scooped up the loose ball and took it the distance for the layup. He missed an early offense three. He pushed out the board, changed directions and scored the layup. He curled into the paint and fumbled the ball away, score the other way. He lost a defender with a behind-the-back dribble, then hit Kuzma with the interior feed between defenders for the layup. Second Half: He cut off ball but couldn’t finish the layup. Off-balance quick fire corner three and he missed. He scored a layup on the break, getting a pass from Ingram at full speed. Quick outlet to Kuzma for the breakaway layup.

Randle -- -- Some real hard screen setting by Randle in this one, despite being called for a couple illegal ones. I appreciate the willingness to get contact on those. That got him in a little foul trouble and limited his minutes before eventually fouling out. Offensively, they sagged off him badly in this game, daring him to shoot. They did that from the beginning and he wasn’t looking for his perimeter shot at all. We started to run some screen-rolls for him with Kuzma up high and JC/Lonzo running the point. With the Nets worried about Kuzma’s ability to space, the lob was there for Julius to finish. Good to see them run that with more frequency. With Randle’s foul trouble and Nance’s injury, we had to go big against the Nets small ball. The team was a little uncertain of how to take advantage of that, but slowly started to figure it out. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 5-9 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 assists, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 6 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He missed a 16-footer after being left open forever (then letting a man close on him before shooting). He rolled to the hoop, took the pass and powered in the layup. He attacked baseline and swished the floater. He missed the short one-hander over Mozgov. He wasn’t paying attention to a perimeter pass, dunk the other way. He was blocked in the post. He blocked a Russell dunk on one end and took a pass on the break on the other and threw down. Called for an illegal screen (he had been setting some good ones). He choked the easy jumphook at the front of the rim. He drew FTs on the offensive glass, he missed both. Second Half: Great shot block recovering to the rim to ignite the break. He bulled over a man and was called for a charge. He dunked off the screen-roll lob from Clarkson to start the fourth. Another illegal screen. He finished the lob from Ball off the two-man game (again, Kuzma’s floor stretching making this play happen). He fouled out on a trip with 1:58.

Clarkson -- -- Great first half with some really unselfish play. He scored 12 points on 5-8 shooting and had 4 assists and 2 steals in his 14 minutes. That’s getting it done. “Just us being unselfish, passing up a good shot for a great shot,” Clarkson said. Buy in to that, please. He shared some PG duty with Ennis in this one, but we still put the ball in his hand quite a bit to run the offense. Scoring-wise, he got into the midrange again, but had some really controlled drives, as well. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 6-12 shooting (7-8 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 5 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 25 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He backed it out, attacked with speed and powered in the And-1 layup after hanging in air a bit, he made the FT. He took a pass in the lane and hit the 13-footer. He missed a baseline jumper. He jumped the passing lane, swiped the ball and pushed it out at full speed for the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He was rejected on a layup. He hit Randle on the two-man game for the layup. He probed and hit the floater in the lane when the pass wasn’t available. He bounced between his legs to Ennis on the break for FTs. He missed a pull-up 19-footer. He came off the Julius screen and hit the floater. He tracked down the outlet and hit Randle trailing for the dunk. Nice swing pass to Ingram for the three. Poor inbounds, turnover (why isn’t he on the court looking for the jumper on an inbounds with a few seconds left on the shotclock?). He hit Lopez rolling for the And-1 at the end of the half. Second Half: He drew FTs on a turnaround on iso, he made both. He attacked to his right, took contact and drew more FTs, he made one. He missed an open pull-up on the wing. He trailed the break, took the pass, probed left and scored left. He iso’d, spun and drew FTs with 4.6 left (could have brought the clock down lower), he made both (and we paid the price with a three at the buzzer). Lob pass to Randle for a dunk to start the fourth. He choked a layup and wanted a foul. He missed a short floater.

Brewer -- -- Some sketchy minutes when Luke ran him at PF for Ingram who slid over to that spot when Kuzma sat. Second time we’ve seen that this season. Not a lot of action. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot to go with 1 board, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 9 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: Turnover on the perimeter handoff. He fouled a man with 0.8 nearly 45 feet from the up. Second Half: He took a charge in transition to get a stop.

Ennis -- -- His best game of the season. Luke decided to go small at the PF spot with Ingram and Brewer. That meant sliding JC to the SG and using Ennis at the point. So the question then becomes Ennis at PG or Deng at PF during this stretch? Or go big with Bogut/Randle? Not a fan of going small with Brewer. Ennis scored a couple of layups cutting off ball and taking passes from Lopez. He also drew FTs and was able to scratch out double-digit scoring. Nicely done in limited minutes. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-4 shooting (0-1 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 11 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He swiped a ball on a reach and was fouled for FTs, he made both. Poor D on Russell giving up a straight line drive with no one icing on D behind him. Second Half: He attacked left with the shotclock low, took some good contact and powered in the layup. He pushed out the break and hit a trailing Clarkson who took it for the layup. He was fouled on the defensive glass for FTs, he made both. He missed a three when they sagged off him. He backdoored his man and Lopez bounced to him from the high post for the reverse. He fed the post, cut, took the bounce pass from Lopez and scored the layup. Bad angle on D and he gave up an And-1.

Hart -- -- Offensively, he was a non-factor. But he had some moments, as usual, on the defensive end. We weren’t going to make it easy on Russell. Even our backups play some tough D. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three to go with 1 board, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He airballed the wing three. Second Half: He stripped Russell. Wow, bogus blocking foul and he wasn’t happy. Nice challenge on Russell’s drive to get a stop a few seconds later. He traveled taking a bounce pass under the hoop.

Walton -- -- Quick pace as both teams like to get up and down. Lonzo really aggressive early on… The Lakers led 15-11 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… Up 3 when JC, Randle and Hart came in with 4+ minutes left. Randle, Ingram, Hart, KCP, JC lineup… Brewer in at PF now… They gave up a 7-0 run… The Lakers led 30-29 after the first quarter… Randle, Kuzma, Ingram, JC and Ennis… They gave up a 5-point lead as Russell banked in a three and Luke called a timeout… He brought in Ball for Ennis… Up 7 when KCP came in for JC with 5 minutes left… Some scores by Kuzma and they forced a timeout, up 9 with 4 left in the half… Lopez out for Randle with 2:33 left, Lakers up 10…Still up 10 when he went with Randle, Kuzma, Ingram, KCP and JC, sitting Ball… The Lakers led 64-55 at the half. The Lakers had 40 points in the paint in the first half… They pushed out to 15 points, then had it cut back to 7 and Luke called a timeout after a transition score… Lopez on fire from three… Lakers up 13 when he sat Kuzma and Ball for JC and Brewer, BI sliding to the PF… Just waiting for the Lakers to clamp down on D and get separation, but they aren’t doing it… Randle in for Lopez, Lakers up 10 with 3:38… They pushed out to 13… Luke then went back to the Brewer at PF lineup with Ennis coming in for Ingram… With 43 seconds left, he sat Julius and brought in Kuzma at C, super small ball… The Lakers led 95-84 heading into the fourth… Julius, Kuzma, Brewer, Clarkson, Ennis to start the fourth… Julius quickly picked up foul number five, and Lopez returned with 11 minutes left… They pulled out to a 14-point lead when the timeout came with 8:45 left… Lopez, Kuzma, Ingram, KCP and JC with 7 minutes left, Lakers up 13... Luke called a timeout after giving up back-to-back And-1 layups and brought back all the starters up 10… Lakers can’t stop fouling in this one… Lead down to 7… Lakers losing the small ball with Lopez out there… Randle in for Lopez, Lakers up 7 with 2:22… Randle fouled out 24 seconds later, but did finish a lob… Lopez back in. They started getting him the ball a little more against the smaller defenders… Lakers made 9-21 from three. The Lakers front court made all the threes…

Brook Lopez was absolutely spectacular.

Kyle Kuzma is a spectacular rookie - so glad our scouting department rocks!

But almost lost in much of the discussion elsewhere - BI had a very good game against the Nets small ball lineups. For a while I was wishing he'd pass out of his drives, but he was making things happen. 18 points on only 13 shots, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks, a steal, and he sank both of his 3 point attempts!! I'm curious if he exits this season with a decent reputation as a shooter. He seems to be heading in that direction.

Also - Randle's picks. I'm glad he went overboard on a few of them, even if it meant fouling out. It's such a departure from the liability he was previous years on offense, slipping picks almost every time then not knowing what to do once he frees himself. He's come such a long distance on both offense and defense. He's even starting to use both hands to score. Next to all of this, hitting more 3's would be the frosting on the cake.

Combine this with the monster game from Lopez and a great outing by Kuzma - I really liked what our front court did tonight.

While BI's three still looks shaky, his mid-range looks really damn good. Glad to see he made an improvement on things.

I missed this one again. Maybe I should just stop watching the Lakers and catch their reruns

Very excited by Kuz and Ingram's statline. As for Lonzo... hey 7-0 ATR and +22 is nothing to sneeze at?

I'm surprised Lonzo ended up with zero TOs. I remember Lonzo throwing the ball away trying to save a ball heading out of bounds when he fumbled a pass from Lopez on a cut. I guess they credited the TO to Lopez? Either way, decent game. Awful shooting, obviously, but fairly steady defensively and distributing.

Then again when you watch him, he plays like a rook he is. Sometimes trying too much, sometimes too little. Sometimes flashing brilliance, sometimes completely MIA.
I can live with his shooting issues as time probably will cure these. What I don't like is how he too often lets his man fly by him and does not rotate to help the helper. Gotta put in the effort on D at all times. Like Hart does.

I like Ball, but I do get the feeling he's struggling a bit, getting used to playing twice as many games each week in an 82 game season, and perhaps a bit of scouting by opponents as a result of his hot start. He seems like a pretty smart kid, I think he'll make the adjustments on defense and rotate more consistently eventually.

Nothing like a scorching hot Brook Lopez in can't-miss mode on catch-and-shoot 3 pointers to help that assist total along!

Liked what I saw BUT we are not going to be able to get away with Brewer at PF against other teams with taller line ups.

Luke either has to bite the bullet and put Zubac at C and Randle at PF with the second unit OR he has to use Deng at the PF with the second unit.

My personal preference is Z at C but I think Luke with go with Deng at PF.
