Self-Inflicted Wounds, Round 2… Let’s start with the rookies in this one.

Lonzo Ball got the triple-double becoming the youngest NBA player ever to do that. The numbers: 19 points, 12 rebounds, 13 assists, 3 steals, 4 blocks. Huge numbers, and without him on the court tonight the offense struggled.

His draft mate, Kyle Kuzma, scored 21 points and pulled down 11 boards himself. Luke running him a team-high 42 minutes tonight.

While they had great performances from their rookies (those numbers are ridiculous for rookies), the team suffered from another round of self-inflicted wounds.

They shot just 59.5% from the freethrow line, leaving 15 points there that would have made a massive difference. You just can’t do that on the road.

Then, they added 15 turnovers in the second half to finish with 23 on the night.

The second units at the end of both the first and third quarters stalled out badly on offense. Too much pounding the ball, allowing the defense to load up on them. All that was too much to overcome, and the Lakers fell 98-90.

Hit a normal amount of FTs and it’s anyone’s game. Cut down on the turnovers and you take the win.

Ball -- -- At 20 years and 15 days, the youngest player in NBA history to get a triple-double. You knew it was coming, just a matter of when. He got it five days under LeBron’s. He hit his first two threes in this game on his way to an 11-point, 10-assist, 6-board, 2-steal first half. His feet/balance looked good on the threes he knocked down. Some great reads, hitting rollers going to the hoop for scores, hitting jumpers or the occasional drive. “I thought he did a great job playing at a pace and playing for others,” Luke said. I just have no concerns about Lonzo. Whether the shot falls or not this season, whatever. It will someday, I’m sure. The hot takes and concern over parts of his game are pretty boring, to be honest. It’s November into his rookie season. He’s already shown some tremendous two-way ball as a rookie and it’s only going to improve. Think about that for a minute. This is his floor and he just became the youngest player to get a triple-double. Defensively, he really uses his length well. Obviously, the recoveries to block shot are the most apparent use of that, but even just recovering on the perimeter off of screens. As he improves his ability to navigate screens, it’s only going to get better. He had one moment tonight of being a bit too upright and flat-footed, but that part of his defensive game has improved a ton from summer. Strong game tonight. Do it again, soon. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 7-12 shooting (3-5 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 12 boards, 13 assists, 3 steals, 4 blocks, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls in 39 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He drained a deep three on his first attempt. Great recovery to smother his man and force a bad pass at the rim. Quick advance pass and Ingram dunked off it. He attacked off the three line and hit Lopez for the score. He sank a wing three on a catch and shoot. He hit Randle on the screen-roll for the layup. He didn’t hit rim on a step-back heave trying to beat the shotclock. He got middle again on the screen roll and hit Randle for the dunk. He threaded a pass from the sideline to Kuzma who cut down the lane for the layup. He jumped to pass, held it a beat and hit Julius under the hoop for a dunk. He skied for a defensive board. His pass was deflected, he got it back and hit Kuzma for FTs. He took a feed from Julius, attacked and scored the layup with his right. Kuzma kicked out to him and Lonzo swished the wing three. Flat-footed and he gave up a layup. He hit Lopez in the paint for FTs. Second Half: He scored an And-1 lefty layup cutting behind the overplay for Brook to find him, he missed the FT. He missed an open wing three on a kickout. He kicked out to Kuzma for the wing three. He attacked right and couldn’t finish, going down hard. He threw a pass away. He grabbed an airball for his triple double on one end, then hit the short floater on the other. He attacked and lost the handle. He rejected his man off glass on a great recovery. He got undercut on a three for FTs, he made two. He weaved through the lane and bricked the layup (got to finish those). Tough floater, getting knocked down with no call and missing. He rejected a man trying to iso on him, just ate it up. He scored a layup.

Kuzma -- -- He got the defensive assignment on Giannis. Not easy at all. He played him about average, which for a rookie is fine and good enough to get us a win. “He’s a hard guard,” Kuzma said. Kuzma is a tricky cover himself as a rookie. He showed some of the perimeter game today with a three and some midrange. He also crashed the glass for scores and got out in transition. Despite, the big minutes, he was hustling for boards late in the game. I want to see more plays designed for him to cut. He had a sweet one off a Randle screen that Lonzo found him on for a dunk. His so quick on his feet, you’ve got to take advantage of that to not just free him up, but pull help defenders with his gravity on those plays. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 8-17 shooting (1-4 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 11 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 42 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He missed a lob and two point-blank tips. He smothered Giannis’s post up attempt and forced a miss. He airballed a 40-footer on a 0.9 inbounds play. Great cut down the lane and Lonzo fed him for the score. He attacked and hit Randle for FTs under the hoop. He crossed over and hit the step-back wing jumper. He drew FTs on the quick-fire feed from Lonzo, he made both. He missed a runner that he probably should have gone hard to the rim on. Second Half: He drained a wing three on the kickout. He ball faked, attacked right and hit the driving hook off the glass. He finished the half-court lob from KCP. He missed a quick-fire wing three, dead straight. Travel on a drive off the three line (had a wide open lane). He sank an 18-footer off the two-man sequence with Ingram. He was called for a travel off the jumpstop. Good job falling down on Giannis’s contact as he tried to back him down, he drew the charge. He then drew FTs on the other end trying to throw down a massive dunk, he made one. He scored a rare And-1 putback tip-in, he made the FT. Short on a turnaround in the post. Off on the lefty finish on a cut. He swiped a perimeter pass and took it for a dunk. He missed a corner three.

Lopez -- -- We played him very little after his initial stints as Luke brought him back with 2 minutes left in the first half and 3 minutes left in the second half. Luke’s determined you can’t have Randle and Lopez on the floor for any amount of time, even if Lopez is a floor spacer offensively. I think you’ve got to play with that some. Glad we didn’t see the Brewer at PF thing for a long stretch, but the team didn’t play bad when he was on the floor tonight. Why not run him a little with Randle? Lopez had no defensive boards tonight, but the team rebounding was steady. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-9 shooting (1-2 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 3 blocks, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He missed a jumphook from about 12 feet. He missed a floater, then fouled. He flipped in a short one off the drive and dish from Lonzo. He was called for three seconds. He couldn’t power in a layup. He scored a putback. He drew FTs when Lonzo found him in the paint, he made one. He rejected a layup on one end, then recovered a ball on the other in transition and dunked. Second Half: He hit Lonzo backdooring his man for the layup. He missed an off-balance wing jumper. He drained a three out of a timeout. He missed a three from the other wing next time down.

Ingram -- -- A lot of ball stopping and forced shots to start this game. Awful first half, shooting just 1-6 from the floor and 1-4 from the line for 3 points. Really a poor game. Anytime he got the ball, it was stop and survey the floor. That just threw a bad hitch in the offense. “We didn’t do a good job as a group, though, of attacking the rest of the defense. Once we got out of the two-person trap, we just let them recovery fully,” Luke said. You’ve got to keep the pressure on. His freethrow shooting was extremely poor again. Seems to be in his head because the form looks fine. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 2-10 shooting (0-2 from three, 4-8 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 2 assists, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -20. The Action: He missed an open sideline three on a kickout. He dunked off the quick advance pass from Ball. His pass on the two-man game was picked off. He turned the corner and drew FTs at the rim, he made one. He iso’d and wasn’t close on the 18-foot pull-up. He rejected his man on a recovery at the rim. He was blocked on a dunk (probably could have scored the layup). He forced and missed a turnaround jumper, poor look. He drew FTs on the break, he missed both. Second Half: He was rejected badly at the rim on a drive. He attacked right and drew FTs, he made just one again. Great recovery in the paint to block Maker going up, he then pushed out with speed and drew FTs, he made both this time. He hit Kuzma for the jumper. He missed a three in transition. He was tied up on the dribble on the perimeter, uggh. He attacked left in transition and scored the easy layup. He missed a baseline pull-up.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He was a lot more scrappy on D than the 1 steal shows. Some great help D plays on Giannis. He sank one three tonight. Again, really hard for me to tell what’s a good shot for him. His one make was on the catch and shoot at the top of the key, where he doesn’t really look on balance coming to his right. But it goes and we purposely look for it. He missed both his FTs tonight, also had some ball stopping. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-10 shooting (1-4 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He missed a baseline pull-up. He attacked in transition and flipped in a layup over the challenge. Way short on a pull-up wing jumper out of a timeout (not a good look). Ball pounding and he was forced to a brick heave from deep. He flashed to the ball and hit the three from the top of the key. His interior feed was picked off. He pulled up on the break and missed the wing jumper. He was blocked on a pushout layup. Second Half: He hit Kuzma on a half-court lob for the layup. He missed the three straight away wanting the foul that didn’t come, then picked up a tech. Great hustle back in transition to strip Giannis and save a sure dunk. He missed a wing three. He didn’t box out and gave up an And-1 putback. Perimeter foul, giving up FTs, sheesh. Nice job forcing a shotclock violation on Giannis with another strip. He drew FTs on a drive and missed both. He dunked in transition.

Randle -- -- He had 10 points on 4-5 shooting in the first half, getting set up nicely by his teammates. Great job getting to the line and knocking them down (9-12). Outside of Randle, the team shot 13-25 from the line. He was trying to finish strong and the rim and got the calls. We played him 27 minutes tonight…in two long stints. He looked reasonable with that. The motor was strong and he could still get up and down court with speed. He picked up another offensive foul setting screens. Seems like a regular thing now. I don’t mind it. Glad he’s making contact (finally!). Teammates are rewarding him, as well, for that. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 4-7 shooting (0-1 from three, 9-12 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 1 assist, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 5 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: He missed a jumphook in the paint. He drew FTs trying to power in a layup, he made one. He dunked on the drive and dish from JC. He was called for an offensive foul using an off arm on a drive. He scored a layup off the screen-roll with Lonzo. Nice recovery to challenge a layup. He dunked off the two-man game with Lonzo again. He drew FTs on the drive and dish from Kuzma, he made one. He dunked off the great feed from Lonzo. He missed a tip-in attempt. He lost grip and threw a pass away. He fired a push out to Ingram for FTs on the break. Second Half: He drew FTs on the screen-roll with JC, he made both. Three seconds in the lane, unable to handle a pass, then passing it off himself (that felt like 5 seconds). He back-rimmed a three when the offense stalled and the shotclock was low. He drew FTs hustling down court for Blue to find him, he made just one. He spun on his man and drew FTs on the massive reverse dunk attempt, he made both. He battled for the Lonzo missed drive and drew FTs, he made both. Blocked trying to power up under the hoop.

Clarkson -- -- Tale of two halves. Good job getting into the heart of the D early on for scores or finding teammates. In the second half, however, the team lost their balance and mojo. Too much of guys trying to do things by themselves as Lonzo sat and the Lakers fell back by 10 heading into the fourth. Minutes like those have to give Luke hesitation again on JC at the backup PG. When Luke subbed him out in the fourth quarter, Vander Blue assumed the sub was for him, but Luke gave JC the hook as he was struggling with the role. They need more set plays they can go to when we see the offense stall. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-8 shooting (0-3 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He attacked and hit Randle for the dunk. He was fouled at the rim with no call and couldn’t finish the layup. He attacked and drew FTs this time, he made one. He missed a forced three. He swished the little runner in transition on the hit ahead from Lonzo. He curled into the paint off the high screen and hit the high layup over a couple closing defenders. He missed a short one, we got it back to him and he attacked for a layup. He had 7 points on 3-6 shooting in the first half. Second Half: He set up Randle on the screen-roll for FTs. He crossed over, attacked, took contact and drew FTs, he made one. He traveled on a probe. He missed Randle wide open the break for a dunk, instead turned it over on the drive. He missed a heave from three after a horrible final possession of the third. He coughed it up trying to drive and dish. He pounded the dribble and missed the step-back three.

Brewer -- -- Cutting Brewer’s minutes down to 6 now. Progress. Still, we played poor when he was out there. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three to go with 1 board, 1 steal and 1 turnover in 6 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He rimmed out a half-court shot at the buzzer. Second Half: He curled intot he middle of the paint and threw it away.

Blue -- -- He got the Hart minutes in the rotation. I mentioned it in the last game that Hart looked like he might be on the verge of losing minutes to Luke experimenting with other options. Sure enough, it happened. Blue was a +12 in his 7 first half minutes as the second unit went with a Ball, JC and Blue trio. We didn’t have quite the same lineup in the second half. He didn’t try doing too much offensively when he was out there and he never really found his groove in the offense. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot and had 1 board, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 14 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: Great find, hitting Randle trailing the break for FTs (he missed the easy dunk). He threw a pass away on a drive.

Walton -- -- Lakers pushing the pace early on… Lakers up 3 when Randle and JC entered for Ball and Lopez…. Tied with Randle, Ingram, Brewer, KCP and JC lineup. Luke quickly called a timeout after we gave up back-to-back dunks to Giannis on poor to no D… This unit gave up an 8-0 run… The trailed 24-17 after the first quarter… He started a Randle, Kuzma, Blue, JC, Ball lineup. Hart losing his spot in the rotation in this one… They trimmed the lead and forced a timeout… They pulled out to a 5-point lead, well-balanced offense and feisty D… He sat Blue and JC for KCP and Ingram. Why not keep it rolling?... Lopez back in for Julius with 3 minutes left, Lakers down 1… The Lakers trailed 51-49 at the half. The Lakers were 7-14 from the line… Back-and-forth action. Lakers hurting their cause with every missed FT… Bucks led by 3 when Lopez sat for Randle and Ball for JC… Blue back in to go with JC, Ingram, Kuzma and Randle, Lakers down 4 with 2 minutes to go… The offense stalled out badly with JC and Ingram pounding the dribble… They trailed 77-67 heading into the fourth… He went with Randle, Brewer, Clarkson, Blue and Ball… Kuzma finally back in down 12 with 9 minutes to go… KCP in for JC… Ingram in for Blue, Lakers down 10… Lopez back in with 3 minutes left… Can’t blame Luke for the poor FT shooting. Guys are professionals. They need to knock those down… The turnover problems, however, are certainly an issue that can be worked on…

Another lesson for the kids

Will JC be able to provide the needed veteran leadership and clutch performances expected of him - consistently? He is a talented scorer, but the needed dependability as a distributor (PG) or defender has not been seen.

Will we see Caruso or Ennis in the near future?

Will Vander Blue be able to provide the needed shooting? If JC is unable to fulfill the role the Lakers need him to fulfill, why not give Vander Blue the opportunity to make the mistakes - except that he is a rookie

Randle is a high-energy force that is having problems finishing against taller Bfs?

Maybe BI should look at films of how Klay works in the same offensive sets

Congrats to Ball; Ingram's worst game of the season, but he'll rebound. Luke kept JC in about 3 minutes too long in the 3rd quarter.

Once again, the game was very winnable. I think we're better than our record shows.

Bucks' defense is predicated on ball pressure in the back court, all meant to either create a turnover or funnel you down the middle of the paint to over penetrate and face those longer arms of all those long defenders they have. As a result, the Bucks' defense has a huge hole - defending the 3pt line. Much like a zone, they leave shooters open.

Kobe would have a field day with the ball pressure. He'd pull the two pressuring defenders out so to create a 4 on 3 situation in the half court. That's what we want Ingram to do (as defenses, especially the Bucks, have now begun to ball pressure him behind the 3pt line to minimize his ability to get to the rim), but he doesn't have that ability yet and too often tries to dribble himself out of a double team.

Conversely, that kind of ball pressure feeds into Clarkson's worse habits as he's quick enough to turn the corner just to overpenetrate and deal with those long arms in a congested paint, leading to a tough shot attempt or a deflected pass.

In this game, the Bucks were most vulnerable when it came to Maker or Hensen defending out on the perimeter. That meant that if we used Randle as the primary playmaker (not scorer, but facilitator), while letting guys like Clarkson, KCP and Ingram play off the ball more, we would have had more offensive success. The same goes for using Kuzma in that playmaker role when he wasn't defended by Giannis.

One of the benefits of Kuzma and Randle is that we have two guys who play big, yet can both handle the rock and play the facilitator role. That's a distinct advantage we have, yet we rarely if ever go to it. This was a perfect game to do so. Similarly, when Giannis was in the game, this would have also been a perfect game, given Milwaukee's length and that they actually play a bigger lineup than most other teams, to go with a Kuzma/Randle/Lopez front court. Upset I never saw that. We would have matched up better and exploited our versatility better.

Flatly, the players need to make shots to win. You beat a team like Milwaukee by making all the open outside shots they are going to give you. However, it doesn't help when Luke doesn't game plan effectively or use the right rotations either.

yeah, don't know what happened to Caruso. We need another playmaker out there. Ennis is not better than Caruso.

Thanks, DB!

Congrats to Ball! Too bad the great performance by him and Kuz was not rewarded with a W.

Luke is as stubborn as Phil was when it comes to rotations. The fact that he even does not try Lopez-Randle duo is beyond me.
Turns out we are really lacking depth at SF position. Deng is old, Brewer is mostly useless and when BI has a weak game.... Luke could try to counter it with three-guard rotation - todays experiment went rather well.

When nance comes back, I hope luke tries kuz as the backup to BI at the 3, could be a boon.

KCP seems to suck at pulling up from mid-range in transition. He's missed every shot I've seen him take from that position. Missing those really hurts the momentum.

Thanks DB! On the road and missed the game. Congrats to Lonzo Ball for setting the NBA record for the youngest player ever to record a triple double, for getting his first triple dub regardless of age for that matter, and most of all for breaking out of his slump in a huge way last night, filling up the stat sheet and even hitting threes!

So many recent games would have been wins with this Lonzo in the lineup. Too bad about the free throw problems, stupid turnovers and the bad Clarkson Ingram dynamic.

Looking forward to some more wins soon, thanks again DB!

Thanks, DB!

What a great game by Lonzo. Shot really, really well. And he's a actually a great defender for a rookie. His help defense is very good.
Our team is completely different (for worse) when Lonzo's out. Let's just pray he's not injuried anytime soon.

Kuzma was also great. Kid is legit.

Which makes me question Jordan Clarkson's abilities. He might have one or two games where he's looking to get his teamates involved, but in the end he's not a PG. He doesn't have the IQ for it. He lost us the game with like 4 straight bad posessions.
And Luke should've sub him out. That was on him too.

Julius Randle... After 3 years he still doesn't know what to do when he's under the basket surrounded by 3 defenders. SMH. Gotta fix that.

I won't ever start talking about free throws. We're a professional team, FFS. At least 75% every night is what I expect. We shot 59%. Ridiculous.

Our defense is pretty good. That alone is keeping us close on those games against better teams. It's really encouraging going forward.

We have a sequence against weak teams coming up next:
@ Suns
vs 76ers
vs Suns
vs Nuggets
vs Bulls
@ Kings

4-2 or even 5-1 it's totally possible. LET'S GO LAKERS!

Caruso is in the G-League right now. If memory serves as a two-way contract player he can only do a limited number of days with the Lakers I think it was 45 games or something like that. I wasn’t sure why Ennis was not in the game but oh well.

Thanks DB

And the best part is 4 home games vs. 2 on the road
