Battle of the Youth… The young talent on both teams on the floor tonight gave this game extra interest.

The Lakers were on their heels early, giving up 24 points nearly halfway through the first quarter to the Sixers. No defense and the offense was missing in action.

Thankfully, the bench sparked the team and reeled the Sixers back in to trail by just 3 after the first quarter.

Lonzo Ball was a -16 in that first half in short minutes and it felt like it. Luke would bench him in the second half as he didn’t rise to the challenge tonight, missing threes, not playing defense well and doing little positive.

Somehow, as badly as the Lakers were playing, they led by 1 heading into the fourth. Brandon Ingram helped keep the Lakers close with continual attacks at the rim and pull-up jumpers for scores. Kyle Kuzma showed off why he’s caught the attention of the league, as well. Both players with new career highs.

“You play defense and fight and you’ll give yourself a chance,” Luke said heading into the fourth.

Luke had Julius Randle going up defensively against Embiid in that fourth quarter. Poor Randle. The Sixers went after that again and again. There was really little advantage to having Randle out there as we were taking advantage of nothing offensively and the Sixers just iso’d against him on. We should have made others try to beat us. Instead, Embiid went off for a huge career high 46 points along with a bunch of other career numbers. He destroyed the Lakers in the fourth, scoring 19 of his points in the quarter as the Lakers fell 115-109.

“He’s a…he’s a problem,” Luke said of Embiid afterward. Part of the Lakers youth movement is their coach, too. He got schooled tonight.

Ball -- -- Very poor first half. The three shooting wasn’t close. The drives and passing made little to no impact. It was one of those rare games where he was a negative force on the team in most aspects. Luke sat him to watch JC close as the PG in the first half as Lonzo also had two fouls (even though JC was missing everything himself). As JC picked it up in the second half, he let Lonzo sit. Right decision tonight. Lakers got nothing from Lonzo. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-9 shooting (0-6 from three) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -18.The Action: He missed a wing three on our first possession. His cross-court advance pass was picked off. He threw it ahead to Kuzma for the reverse. His man spun around him for a layup. He choked a layup in the post, not sure how he missed that one. He traveled with sloppy footwork. He missed a wide open wing three. Then airballed or was blocked a few seconds later on another. He attacked, stumbled and somehow threw a prayer up and in. Second Half: Sealed in the paint and he picked up his third foul to prevent the easy score. He measured and bricked a wing three badly, stole it back and wasn’t close on the wing three a second later, wow. He missed an early offense, pull-up three, why take that right now?

Kuzma -- -- He had 10 points in the first half and nearly the highlight play of the game on a massive throwdown attempt on Embiid that drew FTs. In the second half, he continued to show off his skills. Running hooks, drives baseline, three ball. He extended his new career high with the 24 points. One of the bright spots tonight, for sure. The Lakers needed that. I’m hoping that confidence is growing and we’re going to see more and more nights like this from him. The Stats: He scored 24 points on 9-18 shooting (1-4 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -4.The Action: He missed a pull-up three. He reversed quickly on the long outlet from Lonzo. Poor cross-court read and his pass was picked off. He missed a reverse. He drew FTs on a turnaround, he made both. He attacked baseline and scored a layup. He missed a drive, got the miss and scored the putback. He missed a bank and a tip-in attempt. He was called for a travel on a step-through. He drew FTs on a posterizing dunk attempt on Embiid, wow, too bad it didn’t go, he made both. Second Half: Quick first step and he hit the baseline floater. He missed a three straight away set up for him out of a timeout. He missed a floater but scored the putback on the follow. He attacked baseline and powered in a layup. He missed a floater on an awkward pass from KCP on the break. He posted up and hit the jumphook across the middle. He attacked with speed off the rebound and banked in the running hook (love that shot, so hard to defend). He drained a big three on a kickout with 3 minutes left. He missed a three out of a timeout. He attacked the paint and hit Randle for the dunk. He drew FTs on an attack, he made one.

Lopez -- -- He was slow to react defensively early on and the Lakers fell behind quickly. Embiid had 18 points in the first half. That was nothing to his second half. Lopez watched from the bench for most of the second half. He wasn’t delivering much. This was more Bogut’s came defensively that we needed. Offensively, he missed all five of his threes. I think only one or two, looked like he could get squared up well. Watch Embiid on his three’s versus Lopez. Brook’s feet and balance are all over the place. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-12 shooting (0-5 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists and 3 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He missed a step-hack three. He missed a floater. He missed an open wing three on a kickout, great look. No switch help on Ball’s man and we gave up a dunk. He attacked the pressure and drove for a short runner. He lost control of the high-low pass. He missed a corner three. Second Half: He was blocked on a drive to start the half. He couldn’t finish a lob but was fouled on the putback, he made both FTs. Low position on the rim run and he hit the jumphook. He missed a turnaround in the post. He scored a layup on the interior feed from Ingram. He stripped Embiid on the perimeter. Not close on a wing three.

Ingram -- -- Career high scoring night for a lot of people tonight, including Ingram with 26 points. A lot of the talk coming into the game was Simmons vs. Ball matchup. How would each “rookie” do? Ingram was probably wondering, what about me? He brought it. One of the few parts of our offense that was working early on. Ingram was able to attack seams for scores as well as hit some pull-ups. This was that perimeter/driving balance for scores that you want to see from him (and will with more consistency in the future). When he’s hitting his jumper, that opens up more floor for him to attack. It seemed like everyone else was afraid to attack the paint with Embiid in there. Ingram took it to the rim again and again and came away with scores. Good job getting into the body of defenders and using that length to hang and score over people. The Stats: He scored 26 points on 11-18 shooting (4-5 from the line) to go with 11 boards (4 offensive), 3 assists, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 40 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He curled into the lane to his left, lost his man with a hesitation and scored the layup. He missed a pull-up at the FT line. He attacked a lane to his right and scored the easy And-1 layup, he made the FT. He came up empty on a steal and gave up a layup. He iso’d and was swatted badly as he fell. He was fouled on a putback attempt, he made both FTs. He probed and missed the layup, but follow tipped in his miss. He sank the jumper from the top of the key, coming off a screen to take the pass. He missed a wing pull-up jumper. He blocked Embiid once, but fouled him on the And-1 putback. He pulled it out, attacked strong to his right, hung against the contact and finished at the rim. He sank a short step-back in the lane. Second Half: Nice drive and dish to Lopez for the layup. He sank a pull-up elbow jumper over Embiid. He sank a pull-up wing jumper. He missed a tip-in attempt. He missed a pull-up 16-footer. He missed a tip-in. He attacked the paint, got into Embiid’s body and scored the layup around him. He called for a screen with the shotclock low and he drew FTs, he made one. He took an inbounds, faced up and swished the jumper. He threw a pass away. He blocked a jumper on one end, took the outlet and dunk on the other.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- More of those crazy up-and-down minutes from him early on, but he had 8 points in the first half making a couple of threes in 5 attempts. Those were the Lakers only 2 makes from three in the first half in 15 attempts. Everyone else was shooting blanks, but the Lakers were still right there. The Lakers ended up 3-27 from three. Crazy they can weather that kind of poor shooting (but they were much better at the FT line). He hit a couple more midrange jumpers for the rest of his points. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-11 shooting (2-8 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 1 foul in 41 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He attacked from the wing but was not close on the runner. He missed a pull-up chuck in transition from three, dunk the other way. He broke up a pass to a cutter to get a stop. He missed an iso three with the shotclock low. He forced up the elbow jumper and drew FTs (Bogut in his ear about that or his yapping at the ref), he made both FTs. He blocked his man on one end and hit the pull-up three on the other. He missed a half court runner at the buzzer. He swished a wing three on a swing pass. Second Half: He sank a pull-up wing jumper. He got a kind bounce on a wing pull-up jumper. He botched a fastbreak. He missed Ingram on an obvious lob pass, coaches were ticked. He airballed a wild leaner after pounding the ball for a bit. He missed a three straight away. Sensational defensive play and effort, getting back in transition to strip a ball off a man and get a stop. He airballed a wing three.

Randle -- -- In the first half, we ran him at PF again with Bogut/Brewer out there. Brief stretch with Lopez, too. Quiet first half, shooting 1-6, but he had 5 boards and helped lead the team with a +5. In the second half, we went with him as the backup C down the stretch. Tough assignment against a red hot Embiid and Luke left him out there to get toasted. Can’t put much blame on Randle here, just not a good matchup. Felt bad for him. You have to get some kind of advantage on the small ball and the Lakers had none. Offensively, Julius struggled to finish around the rim and over length. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 2-12 shooting (0-1 from three, 4-6 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 6 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +5.The Action: He attacked strong to his left and was rejected by the help D. He threw down the lob from JC on the break. He missed a step-back fade on iso. He couldn’t finish a layup. He couldn’t power up an offensive board and missed. Second Half: He hit JC backdooring his man for a layup. He was blocked on a drive. He grabbed a miss by JC, couldn’t finish again under the hoop but JC tipped it in. He was fouled on a layup attempt, frustrated he could finish, but he made both FTs. He attacked off the screen-roll and drew FTs on the hard drive, he made one. Horrible call on a defensive board against him, then they gave Randle a tech (just an awful call). He attacked right and was swatted out of bounds. He couldn’t finish a drive against the shotclock. He missed a corner three. He couldn’t hold onto a pass on the break and was fouled on the layup attempt, he made one FT. He couldn’t finish a layup over Embiid. He dunked off the drive and dish from Kuzma.

Clarkson -- -- He was missing jumpers and drives early on (Bogut at least was cleaning up some of that). He finished the first half shooting 3-11 for 9 points. He picked it up in the second half, scratching out points in the paint. The jumper wasn’t really there for him tonight. We sat Lonzo and gave JC big minutes. That wasn’t going to help the shot. “JC was out there competing and making the plays and scoring for us,” Luke said. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 8-21 shooting (0-2 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 5 assists, 2 steals and 1 foul in 32 minutes. He was a +3.The Action: He missed a short one in the paint. He lobbed to Randle for the dunk. He was picked on the perimeter for a layup. He hit Ingram for the jumper at the top of the key. He missed a pull-up at the FT line. He missed a short floater. He attacked easily around Embiid on the perimeter for a layup. He missed the wing three. He scored a layup, then stole the inbounds. He missed another short one. He missed a floater. He blew past a man and was knocked down with no call, obvious foul and he picked up a tech. He got tripped on a drive for FTs, he made both. He made a tech FT. He crossed over and missed the runner, but bounced up quickly for the putback. Second Half: He backdoored his man and Randle bounced it to him for a layup. He couldn’t finish a drive on a BLOB play with a couple seconds on the shotclock. He was blocked on a pull-up jumper. He missed a layup in transition, Randle kept it alive and JC tipped it back in. He attacked right and couldn’t finish. He scored a layup off the great interior bounce pass from Lopez. He got into the paint and hit a floater. He knocked a pass away in the paint to ignite a break. He attacked, took contact and hit the And-1 in the middle of the paint, he made the FT. He missed a wing three on iso.

Brewer -- -- He got his points in this one in transition. Not a lot of action for him, but he’ll probably have a huge game against the Suns coming up. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-3 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 steal and 1 foul in 10 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He wiped the ball on the perimeter and pushed it out for the layup. He missed a corner three and looked fouled. He was blocked on a drive. Second Half: He drew FTs pushing out a Laker steal and attacking, he made one.

Bogut -- -- Some very nice work cleaning up missed drives by JC early on with putback dunks and a jumper of JC’s that was blocked. Bogut was rolling to the hoop after setting the screens and good things happened. Defensively, we could have used him more against Embiid in that fourth. Poor Randle. Great job on the glass again as he came away with 10 boards (those cleanups of JC’s attacking helping those numbers). A lot of talking from Bogut to his young players in this game. I like it. Seems to be the most vocal vet we have. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-5 shooting to go with 10 boards (4 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 2 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He tip slammed the Clarkson miss. He drew an offensive foul to get a stop in the post. He follow slammed the Clarkson miss again. He missed a shotput in the lane. Second Half: He forced Embiid into a turnover on a kickout. He stepped around his man in the post and swiped the pass. JC was blocked on a pull-up jumper, but Bogut grabbed it on his way to the hoop and scored. Sweet bounce pass to Clarkson through traffic for a layup. He couldn’t finish a dunk and wanted a foul.

Walton -- -- Sixers scoring at will against the starters. Luke finally called a timeout, down 18-7 after nearly 5 minutes… Lopez looking awful on D… He brought in Clarkson with 5 minutes left for Ball and Randle for Kuzma to run with Lopez briefly… Bogut in for Lopez… This unit trimmed down the lead a little and forced a timeout… They cut it to 5… Brewer in for Ingram, Lakers down 8… A 15-5 run for the Lakers to close the quarter… They trailed 29-26 heading into the second quarter… Bogut, Randle, Brewer, JC, Ball lineup to start the second quarter… They took a lead shortly later… Kuzma and Ingram in... KCP in… So starters with Randle down 10… Lonzo out with 5:24 for JC. Lonzo playing awful… Lopez back in with a couple minutes left… The Lakers trailed 58-54 at the half. The Lakers shot a poor 2-15 from three… Lonzo looking awful again to start the second half… Lopez out for Bogut… Down 6 when Randle and JC came in for Bogut and Ball with 4 minutes left… Embiid returned, so Luke sat Kuzma for Bogut… Ugly, but the Lakers led 84-83 heading into the fourth… Sixers up 5 when Embiid sat. Kuzma in… Embiid back in and the Lakers going small with Randle. They weathered a ball call against Randle and 3-point possession that extended the Sixer lead to 5 (Luke was irate). They tied it up and forced a timeout… No defensive subs and the Lakers get bled badly by Embiid…

It's not just Embiid, that is the problem, it is not countering size with size and not reacting properly to what is going on on the court.
This time again Luke was the problem for the Lakers in the fourth.

Phil Jackson would throw a double team once in awhile against Duncan or mix it up. I thought he would have learn with Phil.

Beggining to think Luke's a fraud who built his reputation coaching a ready made team in Oakland. Bogut should be out there to counter Embiid not Knuckheaded Julius.

On a positive note: the lakers were piss poor from 3, Embiid was insane, Simmons strong game and they still lost by only 6.

Thanks DB! Missed this game... that for Randle was heartbreaking

Glad to see BI had a game with the jumper going. That 3-27 from 3 is just killer.

Ingram - Played a good game, tended to ISO a bit much, tho.

Kuzma - Solid effort. Best (or 2nd best) player on the team most nights.. which doesn't say much for the rest of the guys.

KCP - Nice effort. Made some great defensive plays and is a great vet on the team. Hope he stays.

JC - Nice game from him again. Needs to find a better balance to his game and learn when to score and when to pass.

Randle - Meh.

Brewer - Good energy. Scrappy.

Lonzo - Why keep chucking 3's, bro? The layup opportunity he DID have, he BRICKED... instead of going up for the simple layup he tried to put a little extra sauce on it and BARELY hit rim. Even his layups have awkward spin on them... wth, man!? Disappeared against guys who were clowning him early on. Poor showing. smh

Bogut - Decent showing. Of the 2 BIGS, he AT LEAST provided SOMETHING.

Lopez - absolutely worthless. Provided ZERO resistance on D... bricked 3's left and right..... and has some of the ugliest post "moves" of any big in the league.

Kevin Hart - Wished the Mamba was still here so he could have dunked on someone and then told this obnoxious d-bag to sit down and s.t.fu.

Jalen Rose, Wheelchair Pierce and Billups - Why in God's name are these 3 dipshtts not only employed as "analysts" on a major station... but TOGETHER on the SAME panel??!! Some of the most boring "analysis" of all time by this trio of morons. Ugh

Luke tried to bring different coverages. When the players are executing just one moment slow makes any defensive scheme ineffective.

Randle's problem was that he was unable to punish Embiid while he was on offense.

Would Bogut be able to play most of the fourth quarter?

DB - will miss your analysis after the Suns game!

Again Lonzo bringing nothing to the table. I think we need a PG for today. Lonzo may or not wise up in the future while Tatum is looking like the
real deal, unfortunately.

When Embiid destroyed DeAndre Jordan, a very good defensive center, it is a confirmation that not many teams will be able to defend him. Simmons is a very good player, along with Covington, are able to operate freely with single coverages when Embiid is on the floor.

Since Randle is definitely not a Draymond Green and Lopez is not like DeMarcus Cousins, Lakers are in need of a strong presence in the paint

Even with our issues at that game, PG and Center, Lakers could have very easily won the game since they limited the 76ers in many areas while only shooting 3-17 in 3pt shots

Lonzo had a problem in his first game against a 6’10” PG who is very accomplished that has a 7’ great center behind him that are older while witnessing the NBA for 1+ seasons. Lesson Taught and Hopefully Lesson Learned

It was frustrating to see Lonzo either bring the ball up or take one of the first passes in the offense, give up the ball, only to go find a spot on the wing or in the corner and just sit there. He didn't seem to be involved as anything more than a spot up three shooter.

People with more knowledge than I have may know if this is by design or not? If it is the design, it makes no sense whatsoever and doesn't play to his strengths at all. If it isn't, he needs to get himself into the flow of the offense or we may be seeing a lot more games like this.

Beggining to think Luke's a fraud who built his reputation coaching a ready made team in Oakland. Bogut should be out there to counter Embiid not Knuckheaded Julius.

I disagree with this very general idea of Luke being totally useless. Look at what he has done with the D of this team. He managed to turn the culture around, and it is not just the change in personnel. JC and Randle where the worst defenders last year. Now we all praise Randle and do not complain much about JC.

But that does not mean he does not make mistakes. Every coach does. He has some bad tendencies with how he uses lineups. He has started to show better judgement. I just hope he learns with the rest of this team.

It's just that the mistakes of coaches tend to cost games...

The more I think and review the stats of this game the more agitated at Luke I become.

So sixers shot 48%

We shot 38%

Sixers shot about 20% from 3

We shot an abysmal 11%

Yet we're in this all the way to the end

We outrebounded them and in many ways outhustled so why we lose?

Aside from the fact embiid went off Luke enabled that...Julius just didn't have it in this game yet Luke rode him and his 2-12 shooting to guard embiid until randle fouled out. Why? Not because of randles scoring not because of any great d...rebounds maybe? Well the guy who was at least challenging for embiid, bogut, had 10 rebounds and wasn't being played as much as Randle who was struggling.

Once again Luke's rigidness struck...he is use to having randle play in crunch minutes and despite him being clearly outmatched didn't play the better chess piece for this game, bogut, who clearly had it going for this game.

Just frustrated at Luke right now - he needs to learn.

Well, I'm glad to have some good news about Bogut. I hope it continues...

Thanks DB!

I really like Bogut. His price is right and he is still an excellent rim protector. Not really sure why he gets so much hate on this board.

Thanks DB! It's dumb to hear that Lonzo v. Simmons rookie talk. I'm sorry, I just don't think Simmons should be considered a rookie. Yeah, I know, injured in preseason blah blah blah... but here's the advantage: Simmons had one year of being around an NBA team and all the perks that go with it: training with an NBA team, meeting with NBA coaches and visiting with NBA level doctors. All the while this time last year Lonzo, Fox and all the other talented rooks are busy going to class and practice. It just doesn't make sense.

Again Lonzo bringing nothing to the table. I think we need a PG for today. Lonzo may or not wise up in the future while Tatum is looking like the
real deal, unfortunately.

This is correct- It seems that Luke is simply running the GS offense which is designed to chuck long three's- (They have shooters, we don't)
I agree with you - I don't know why they keep going this way. Lonzo needs Pnr and controlling the rock - more J Kidd/ Chris Paul less GS.

I'm beginning Lonzo has to change his shot delivery. I'm willing to give it a season. I hope it's off because of the bright lights, big city syndrome. UCLA was college, this is the big leagues.
