Comeback Win… The Bulls led by 13 at the half as they packed the paint and dared the Lakers shooters to beat them. The offense was stalling, the turnovers mounted and the Lakers were in trouble.

Julius Randle sparked the team to life with a strong two-way effort in the third quarter. He was challenging shots on one end and getting into the paint for scores on the other. They tied it up in the fourth and it was anybody’s ball game.

“Defensively, we turned up our pressure,” Randle said.

They also cleaned up the sloppy play. The Lakers had 13 turnovers in the first half, just 1 in the second half.

This allowed them to dig their way out of a 19-point hole.

They were still down 7 with half a quarter to go. Big scores by KCP (drilling threes and cleaning up a bricked three by others) as well as coming up with key offensive boards down the stretch, allowed the Lakers to take control in the final minutes and take the W, 103-94.

Nice work by the team tonight turning the game around after the flat first half.

Ball -- -- He struggled again in the first half as he couldn’t hit the jumper and the Bulls packed the paint to make the drives difficult. Lakers could not get their offense clicking and playing at their pace. In the second half, it improved more and Lonzo was able to get the Lakers some early offense. None was bigger than a long outlet to KCP late in the game, which he turned into a quick-fire dagger from three. Not a lot of assists for Lonzo tonight, but he was a beast on the boards again. Offensively, we’re starting to see a little more off-ball stuff set up and executed to take advantage of Lonzo’s ability to finish a lob. But it’s still only an occasional play or two a game. Defensively, Lonzo looks so much better at everything on that end. Even navigating screens, which might have been his biggest weakness earlier in the season, has improved. I’m just very impressed with how much he’s improved on that end. Now, let’s see if that translates in the next game against Fox if he goes up against him. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-13 shooting (2-8 from three) to go with 13 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a +14. The Action: He handed off to Kuzma from the high post for the dunk. He airballed an open wing three on a kickout. He attacked traffic and lost the handle, turnover. He missed a wing three out of a timeout, at least that one hit rim. He was swatted on the break. He forced a bad pass with a nice challenge on D (won’t get credit for it, but that caused the turnover). He hit Kuzma on the pick and pop for three. He threw down the lob dunk out of the timeout. He couldn’t finish a layup. Not close on the lefty layup on the drive. He missed a wing three. He knocked a ball loose to force a turnover. He missed another three. Second Half: He deflected a pass. He finally sank an open three straight away. He missed a three straight away. He missed a tip in attempt. He fouled on a defensive board to give up FTs. Back on court after a long rest and he hit a three on a kickout. He missed a corner three.

Kuzma -- -- He scored most of his points in the first half. He has had some really big halves, which makes you think one of these games he’s going to go off for 40 or something. However, it seems like Luke is really digging his heels in when Kuz gets aggressive. He pulled Kuzma early in this one after he had 10 points in the first on 4-4 shooting. Still, Luke gave him the big minutes the rest of the night because we need him on the floor. Kuzma drained four threes tonight on his way to leading the team in points (as well as assists with BI). If the starters could just get Ingram and Ball hitting their threes, the offense would click so much more. Kuz can space the floor, but you really can’t see it when you’ve got Ball, Lopez and Ingram all going 3-16 from three tonight…and you feel like Ball’s 2-8 from three was a good night for him. Sounds like Nance is getting closer to coming back. Not sure what Luke’s plan will be. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 7-15 shooting (4-7 from three, 4-7 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 5 assists, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 40 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He slammed after taking the handoff from Lonzo with speed to get the Lakers started. He drained a corner three on the extra pass from KCP. He hit a tough runner off the bounce pass over a defender as he faded a little to his left, wow. He drained another three on the pick and pop with Lonzo. Back in to start the second quarter, he drew FTs on a drive a minute in, he made one FT. He made a tech FT. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He drained a sideline three in transition. He traveled trying to attack off the three line. He missed a long jumper straight away. He threw a kickout out of bounds. He attacked, spun, drew the whistle and threw the tough And-1 floater up and in, he made the FT. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He missed a runner in early offense. He swished a three straight away. He missed a wing three. He attacked with speed but couldn’t finish the layup in a crowd as he went down. He couldn’t finish a layup, wondering why there was no foul call. He kicked out to JC for the three. He missed a baseline floater. He made a tech FT with 24 seconds left. He was fouled a second later on the inbounds, he missed both.

Lopez -- -- He struggled tonight. The threes were genuine bricks. The Bulls could just pack the paint without consequence. It was not pretty. He had some moments of rebounding in crowds that was nice to see (but also some moments where he didn’t impose his size for boards). He also had a couple nice blocks on guys trying to drive into the paint. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-10 shooting (0-4 from three) to go with 9 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He tried to thread a needle in the paint and his pass was picked off. Not close on a wide open three. He missed a jumphook in the post. He missed an early offense three. He scored a layup on the drive and dish from Ingram. He missed a long hook across the lane. He rejected a drive off the glass. Second Half: Sloppy D, fouling a three shooter. He couldn’t finish a reverse in the post. He missed a wide open wing three as the D left him. He couldn’t finish a layup on a drive. He attacked off the three line, spun and scored the layup off two long strides. Not close on a step-back wing three, but luckily it bricked so badly that KCP scored the putback. He rejected Dunn out of bounds on a drive.

Ingram -- -- A couple of great drives for scores down the stretch. Those were huge, particularly the layup he scored with 1:16 left. He’s just looking much more confident and competent at finishing around the rim, taking that contact and scoring through it or over it. He had some sketchy minutes in the fourth prior to that when Luke went to both him and JC on the floor at the same time. Both ball stop badly, so the offense was stalling out. Ingram, however, does a much better job than JC at passing and he led the team with Kuzma with 5 assists tonight. He still needs to watch the ball getting stuck in his hands, which allows the D to catch up. Ingram took four threes tonight, making his first attempt then missing the rest. When you think about what an “average” game from Ingram could be maybe later in the year or next year, I think this is what you hope it is this – 17 points and 5 assists – doing something like that with more consistency. You don’t need to be a first or second option right now, just a good one with occasional moments where you come up with a big score in crunch time like he had tonight. When he gets older, then you hope he elevates his game much further to be one of those top/main options. Just work on improving game after game, night after night and good things will happen. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 7-15 shooting (1-4 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 30 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He faced up and sank a wing three as the D gave him space. He attacked the paint and dumped it off to Lopez for the layup. He stole a bad pass and was called for a charge. He posted up, surveyed the floor, curled into the lane to his left and scored the layup with ease. Perfect lob to Lonzo out of the timeout for the dunk. He missed a wing pull-up jumper. He attacked off the rescreen and missed the easy layup. He took the advance pass and dunked on the break. He kicked to Kuzma on the break for the open corner three. He attacked past Lopez off the three line, took contact in the paint and scored the layup. He missed a wing three. He missed a tough three up against the shotclock. Second Half: Late rotation to his man and he gave up a three. Not close on a wing three. Good recovery to challenge a layup on the break a few seconds later. He took the ball reversal, attacked off the screen to his right and scored the layup. He attacked and couldn’t finish the scoop or tip. He stalled the offense and missed a pull-up jumper after settling. He drew an offensive foul on Robin Lopez as he tagged the roller. He attacked off the three line and drew FTs, he made one. He pushed out the rebound, attacked the D, hung, and made the tough And-1 runner, he made the FT. He attacked to his right, took contact, hung and scored the layup with 1:16 left.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He was the closer tonight. He came up with big play after big play down the stretch to stagger the Bulls and take control of the game in the final minutes. He sank some big threes from the right wing and was tenacious on the offensive glass, keeping balls alive and regaining possessions at the most critical juncture of the game. It was a quiet night for him early on, just not getting the ball. (I’d really like to see him get some kickbacks or DHOs when the D is sagging into the paint.) Often, he’s just parked out on the perimeter and not terribly involved as our halfcourt sets get simplistic or stagnant. Great numbers and a complete two-way game. Consistency vs. being streaky is key for him to elevate his game. Let’s see it again. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 6-11 shooting (4-7 from three, 5-7 from the line) to go with 9 boards (3 offensive), 4 assists, 3 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 39 minutes. He was a +23. The Action: He flagged a kickout pass to get a steal. Extra swing pass to Kuzma in the corner for three. He swiped the ball to ignite the break. He pushed out the break and was stripped. He broke up a lob and ignited the break. He grabbed an offensive board, iso’d and hit the long sideline jumper. He sank a wing three off a swing pass. He missed a tough turnaround chuck from three just trying to beat the shotclock. Second Half: He sank a three off the dribble handoff from Kuzma (more of this play, please). He missed a wing three. Way short on a pull-up from midrange. He drew FTs from the three at the top of the arc (good job making that obvious), he made two. He couldn’t finish the baseline reverse. He put back in a Lopez bricked three that didn’t hit rim. Huge three in transition as he was wide open. He missed a wing three next time down. No hesitation on a three in transition next time he touched it and he drilled it. Great job to keep an offensive board alive in the final minute and we recovered it. Wow, more great work coming up with a missed FT around a big and he was fouled for FTs with 22 seconds left, he made both. More FTs, he made one.

Randle -- -- Not sure if the game changed on a single sequence, but Randle’s massive block on Portis’s dunk attempt, followed up by Randle’s And-1 score on the other end seemed to be that point when things really turned in the Lakers favor. “We can always control our defensive intensity and being unselfish,” Randle said. He had the double-double tonight, but the stats just don’t tell the story of his impact. The first half was messy. Our second unit was running into walls on offensive, turning the ball over and Randle had maybe one good play on the offensive end, a lob to JC. (A lot of times in this game, we ended up with the ball in his hands with just a couple clicks on the shotclock, forcing him into some tough situations.) In the second half, Randle’s defensive intensity picked up and we started to make things happen. He’d switch onto smaller players, contain them, challenge well and also protected the rim with the shotblock. I can’t say enough about his value defensively this year. He’s consistently showing up on that end and becoming a key to our defensive schemes. Personally, I’m putting him in my young core with Lonzo, Kuzma, Ingram and Randle. Got to find a way to make it work this offseason. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-10 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 2 assists, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He missed a wing jumper. He traveled from the high post. He lobbed to JC off the backscreen. He was stripped on a drive. He missed a tough three trying to beat the buzzer after JC pounded the dribble. He threw a lob out of bounds on a poor read. Bad foul on a three shooter. He rejected a layup on help D. Second Half: Great job shedding a man, grabbing the offensive board and scoring the layup. He attacked Lopez with speed, got into the body and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He blocked a dunk at the rim. A few seconds later, he pushed out a board and scored an And-1 layup, he made the FT, big sequence. Great D on a guard to grind the Bulls offense to a halt, then forced a brick. He posted up and swished a turnaround jumper in the middle of the paint to start the fourth. He missed a wing three. He drew a double in the paint and found Hart for the uncontested layup. He airballed having to create when JC dumped the ball to him with the clock about to expire. He couldn’t finish the short jumphook in the paint.

Clarkson -- -- The offense struggled with him running the point, going from a 1-point hole to a 15-point hole the moment he took over for Ball in the first half. When we aren’t running a true point, he’s got to find a way to move the ball and set up teammates better than the 1 assist he got tonight. Maybe we start experimenting more with him just being an off-ball shooter a bit more and having our bigs doing some of the shot creating when we need to jumpstart the ball movement. He had some big plays in our comeback, particularly a 4-point sequence where he made a tech, then hit a three on the one trip down the floor. The second unit really needs to work on their ball movement and sets. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 3-8 shooting (2-6 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 1 assist, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 16 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He attacked the paint and hit Zubac for the floater. He scored the layup off the lob from Randle. He couldn’t finish the tough reverse. He ball hogged it into a turnover trying to dribble through a crowd. Second Half: Quick-fire wing jumper and he drew three FTs, he made all three. He missed a wing three. He gambled on D for a steal, came up empty and got burned. He missed a wing three, but Hart jammed it back in. He drained a wing three in transition, really leaning into that one and knocking it down. He missed a three on iso at the end of the quarter (he had Kuzma wide open). He made a tech FT. He drained a sideline three off a kickout on that same possession to make it a 4-point trip down the floor. He missed a wing three.

Brewer -- -- His consecutive game streak is still alive, but he played just one first-half stint tonight. We looked awful with him on the floor, a -10 in those 4 minutes. I like that Luke switched it up in the second half. “On nights when you don’t have it, you’re not going to get rewarded with playing time,” Luke said afterward of the team in general. That was the case for Brewer tonight. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 1 board and 1 turnover in 4 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He attacked to his right, was able to get an extra dribble in the paint and scored the layup. He traveled trying to drive off the catch without putting the dribble down. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Hart -- -- Luke gave Hart some credit in the second half for helping spark the Lakers. He had a huge putback dunk as well as another layup off an interior feed from Randle. His jumper is just not falling, but he’s always giving effort and battling on D. If the Lakers pull off the two max free agency next season, it’s likely that JC is gone and the Lakers will be looking for someone on a cheap contract at the SG off the bench. They have both Hart and Blue on the roster. Getting both of them occasional minutes now will help in future if that scenario plays out. Not always pretty, but the minutes are important. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-6 shooting (0-2 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards (2 offensive), 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and no fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He missed a three at the top of the arc. He threw a pass away. He didn’t hit rim on an open wing three. Second Half: He drew FTs trying to finish on the break over a big, he made one. He threw down a putback jam off a missed jumper. He crashed the glass, got the offensive board and reset the offense. Randle found him open in the paint for the layup. He missed an elbow jumper after slamming on the brakes to lose a man. He missed a corner three.

Zubac -- -- He came in to run with Randle at the end of the first quarter, taking the Bogut spot in the rotation. Short minutes and he was able to score when Clarkson ran into a wall of traffic and threw it back to Zubac in the paint. Strange to see Zu vs. Bogut, but it’s most likely because of the back-to-back situation. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 1 board, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 3 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He hit the floater off the drive and dish from KCP. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Walton -- -- Robo sub to take out Kuzma after a hot start (10 points on 4-4 shooting). Either that or he just didn’t like something, but this is usually the time he’s been taking him out lately. Kuz was on fire early on. Lakers up 2 halfway through the quarter and Randle in… Down 1, Lonzo out for JC, Lopez out for Zubac… The Lakers trailed 27-23 after the first quarter… Lakers went with a Randle, Kuzma, Brewer, Hart, JC lineup… This group faded as they couldn’t get stops consistently. Luke called a timeout after a 21-7 run and the Lakers were down 10… Another timeout shortly later down 15 now. Clarkson running the offense badly… He brought back in the rest of the starters with 8:30 left. The Lakers with a 5-second violation out of that timeout… Another timeout as the Lakers had trimmed it a little, then trailed by 16 again with 3:47 left… Turnovers killing the Lakers… The Lakers trailed 56-43 at the half… The Bulls stretched out the lead to 19, but the Lakers cut back into it to force a timeout… Down 15, he sat Lopez for Randle midway through the quarter. Lopez doing nothing offensively… Hart in for Ingram… Lonzo out for JC with 4:27 left, Lakers down 15…. Randle sparking the team to life, trimming the lead to 6 and forcing a timeout… The Lakers trailed 75-72 heading into the fourth… He went with a Randle, Kuzma, Ingram, Hart, JC lineup to start the fourth… Quick timeout after giving up a couple of three-point possessions early in the fourth… Sketchy playing the Ingram/JC combo here as the both ball stop… Kuzma and Randle with great passes to guards for scores and they tied it up to force a timeout… Down 7, he brought back in Lonzo and KCP for JC and Hart… Down 6, he brought back in Lopez for Kuzma with 6 minutes left… Tied up, they sat Randle for Kuzma with 3:30 left… Randle back in for Lopez as the Lakers led by 5 with 1:32 left… Lakers got extra possessions down the stretch with some good rebounding and held on… Lakers made 13-40 from three (32.5%)…

You could sign PG and Randle, and hope Lopez signs a wink-wink deal. Basically replace KCP with PG. 8th seed perhaps. Or 6th seed if LBJ signs instead.

It all depends on Deng I think. If Deng is moved, the team will go for two max in free agency, and keeping Randle becomes secondary. Or he might be involved in a Deng trade.

If they have space only for one and a half max, Randle might be the best option.

I remember SAS once failed to get the top FAs they want(the year LAL signed Malone and Payton), and spent to keep Ginobili instead. It worked out well for them.

Thanks DB! Watched this one, didn't think BI had an impactful game despite some good slashes to the basket. It's great when BI stuffs the box score and it doesn't even feel like a particularly great game for him.

As for JC, I can't help but feel he was sabotaged in that 2nd quarter playing next to Brewer and Hart. That is just an awful perimeter pairing that provides zero shooting. Hart looked okay in the 4th, but pairing him with Brewer is just a disaster.

AAAAA

Good to get the win even if ugly at times

Hopefully Lonzo can step up tomorrow. Second game of a back to back and the sheer minutes he and kuz played may bite the lakers tomorrow. With that said I really hope Lonzo is able to use his length and bigger size v Fox to his advantage. At least on the defensive end he's been doing that vs most pgs...fox will have a chip on His shoulder for sure though.

Thanks DB! Missed this game, good to see the Lakers battled through a tough first half and came back to clamp down on the other team's scoring, fix the turnover problem and win this one.

Team has many imperfections, usually inconsistency, but learning and winning.

Luke presently prefers JC over Ennis as the backup PG. Maybe having Ingram as the backup PG would work - if Ennis is not playing

Lonzo is making an impact despite his bad 3pt shooting

Ugly wins are a good sign IMO...they should have beat this team and they did. 2 in a row! Thanks DB!

Regarding Ingram, it definitely didn't feel like an impact game. Those late scores were big, but beyond that he just kind of cruised and ended up with good numbers.

JC has had the unenviable task of playing with some terrible lineups for floor spacing. Sometimes he works it out but the Bulls were packing it in last night and I thinks that's where we need JC to be more of the floor spacer for others or with Randle going back to his kickbacks when defenders are sagging. JC's the only guy that can knock down threes with some of those units so we should probably put the ball in others hands to set him up off ball a little more in those situations.

Nice comeback. This team has a lot more grit and heart vs. the previous couple of seasons. Last season if we were to get down 19, it would have been a swaggy/lou/dlo 3 fest trying to score our way back into the game. This year, it's about defense...getting blocks and steals...forcing tough shots and then pushing the ball for easy scores at the basket. It's much easier to get back into game playing defense then relying on streaky 3 point shooters.

I thought Randle and KCP were great in the 2nd half last night. Good win vs. a young team that went unconcious from 3 in the first half.
