Matchups… The Fox vs. Ball thing has always been overhyped, but the two finally matched up tonight.

The Lakers looked sluggish defensively (looking at you, Brook Lopez) to start the game. Randolph torched Lopez. Forget the Ball vs. Fox thing, this was the matchup that killed us.

Offensively, the Lakers had little purpose or aggression and fell back by 13 after the first half. Not only didn’t they get to freethrow line, they missed all four attempts from there in the first half.

Luke quickly gave Lopez the hook just a couple minutes into the second half to bring Randle in as Randolph scored too easily again. The defensive intensity picked up, but the Lakers would have to dig out of a large hole once again. They would trim the lead in half heading into the fourth.

Luke went back to Lopez to start the fourth quarter and the lead quickly doubled again. His lack of mobility was exploited badly all game, and our fate was sealed with that substitution.

Nail in the coffin.

It only took a couple minutes, but that brief stretch to start the quarter with Lopez killed us. We were slow to react and recover and the Kings exploited it. The Lakers fell 113-102 to the Kings.

Ball -- -- Well, Twitter finally got its Lonzo vs. Fox matchup after Lonzo had sat with injuries the last couple of opportunities. He had one of the highlight plays of the game with a one-handed lob flush over WCS in the first half. But other than that this “anticipated” matchup was a dud. Lonzo really needs to get his shot right because it opens up everything for him. If we’re not running, he’s bottled up pretty well without that shot. He swished a couple of late threes, but the game was all but over at that point. After those, however, you could also see the D start going over the screen and now the passing lanes opened up. Just got to get that going from the start. I suppose if you are looking for the Twitter/ESPN conclusion on this matchup, you go with Lonzo as he had the highlight reel play that they love. Aside from that, he was clearly the better player tonight with all he was doing for the Lakers despite the loss. Just 3 boards shy of the triple-double. So now maybe we can move on from this? Probably not. Sigh. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-8 shooting (3-5 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 11 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He missed an open corner three. He missed an open 4-foot floater he’s got to knock down. His screen-roll pass was picked off. He threw a pass away for a dunk the other way. He swung it to Brewer for the open three. He caught the lob with one hand and flushed it over WCS (should have been an And-1). He attacked, took contact with no call and wasn’t close. He measured and swished a three when they sagged off him. He got tapped on another open three. Probe off the high screen and he drew FTs after sealing his man, he bricked both FTs. The defender went over the top of the screen, so Lonzo attacked, drew the D and hit Randle for the dunk. Second Half: He was hit on a kickout with no call and it went out of bounds. He hit KCP curling into the paint for the dunk. Kuzma robbed him of an assist on a leakout with the blown dunk. He hit KCP for a three. He swished a deep three on a kickback from JC. He swished another straight away next time down. His man went over the screen next time and Lonzo found KCP for a three.

Kuzma -- -- He should have had 19 points on 8-17 shooting but he choked an uncontested breakaway dunk. That hurt. A couple long jumpers just inside the three line tonight as well as a turnaround jumper that he probably shouldn’t have taken. Good job knocking down the three’s again. His catch and shoot stroke just looks super smooth right now. Feels like it’s going to drop every time. Keep that up. He picked up three fouls in the first half and that limited his time some. Defensively, some missed reads, but not the weakest link for sure. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 7-17 shooting (3-7 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: He swished a wing three on his first touch. He attacked left, but brought it back right and was blocked out of bounds. He attacked off the three line to his left and this time finished with the left. He hit a running hook off a hesitation dribble. He missed a long pull-up jumper that rattled out. He swiped the ball but had it stolen back. He missed a wing three. He missed a long pull-up jumper. Second Half: He missed a wing three on a kickout. He cut to the paint, took the pass, faked one way and hit the jumphook the other. He choked a breakaway dunk (uncontested), ugh. He missed a tough turnaround flashing to the ball. He swished a sideline three on a kickout. He sank another three off the Ball kickout. He fired a pass too hard on the break, turnover, blowing a sure score. All kinds of contact on a drive with no call and he missed, Randle drew FTs on the follow. He missed a three trailing the break. He got tapped on a corner three. He powered in the baseline layup.

Lopez -- -- Killed us. He was a -19 in 17 minutes. Randolph had 11 of the Kings first 15 points against Lopez. Just slow footed defensively and he paid the price. Meanwhile, on the other end of the floor, he/we didn’t make Randolph work against Brook in the low post early on. Luke benched him quickly in the second half after Randolph iso’d and scored. You could see Lopez look back to the bench after that score and groan. When we went back to him to start the fourth quarter that felt like it would be the nail in the coffin and it was. I was fully expecting Bogut to give Randle a breather, then I saw it was Lopez. The Kings immediately attacked him for multiple scores. “I felt better with the Julius Z-Bo matchup,” Luke said, mentioning he thought that could have thrown Brook off later in the game, but he was horrible prior to that. Nice of Luke to take a bullet there. One of the potential options this offseason would be bringing back Lopez. You could do it (if you move JC, don’t sign Randle, etc…), but it’s games like these in contrast to what Randle has been doing that bury this idea. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-6 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 block, 1 turnover and 5 fouls. He was a -19. The Action: He missed a three trailing the break. He missed a jumphook. He missed a wing three. Bad close out and he gave up a layup (Randolph with 8 of the Kings 12 points now). Bad kickout, turnover. Another three for Randolph. He scored a short one off the screen-roll. Bad And-1 foul and he sat for Randle. Second Half: He attacked off the three line and hit the baseline floater to start the half. Great help D rejection from behind Ball to get a stop. He attacked, spun and missed.

Ingram -- -- He got more aggressive in the second half as the team didn’t like how little the Lakers attacked early on. Strong third quarter as he got to the rim multiple times and also finished a lob play set up off a sideline out of bounds sequence. When he ran with Clarkson, we had Ingram playing more of the point role where he was creating and kicking to shooters. At least the Lakers are figuring that out a little more. You’ve got to use JC off ball with Ingram or the spacing goes south. Good job by Brandon kicking out to his shooters on some of those drives and he had the nice assist numbers with 6. Good balance there not forcing it when it wasn’t there for him. Much improved from the start of the season. He was one of the few bright spots. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-7 shooting (4-6 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 6 assists, 1 block and 2 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: He attacked off the screen and easily scored over Randolph. He attacked, couldn’t finish, got it back and missed again. He was bumped on the perimeter to earn FTs, he missed both. Second Half: He attacked the paint and couldn’t finish. Quick attack of a seam and he dunked. He attacked the paint again and scored. He pushed out the rebound with speed and drew FTs, he made both. He threw down a baseline lob out of the timeout. Hesitation dribble to his left, then he attacked hard and drew FTs, he made both. He probed and kicked to Hart for a three. He attacked and kicked out to Kuzma for a three.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Some late three shooting from our guards, but it was too little too late at that point. We were already bled on the defensive end. Still, I’m wondering if the extra shooting the team said they were going to do after practice is maybe starting to pay off a little more. The Lakers went 15-29 from three in this one with KCP leading the way with 4-6 from three. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-12 shooting (4-6 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 35 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He bricked a three on a kickout. He swished a corner three next trip down. He threw a pass away. He missed a jumper at the top of the key. Second Half: He curled into the paint and dunked. He missed a wing three. He curled around the screen, took the pass, stepped on the gas and scored the easy layup. He hit Ingram on the lob pass out of a timeout. He was stripped on a jumper. He threw a pass away getting stuck in air. He swiped a perimeter pass, jumping a passing lane and took it for the dunk. He sank a three off the feed from Lonzo. Hard three attempt on iso and he missed. He swished a wing three on a kickout. He drained a wing three.

Randle -- -- Pretty night and day defensively between Lopez and Randle tonight. The Lakers were competitive with Randle on the floor. Without him, we were killed. The +/- difference between the two tells the story. With Lopez in the game, we were a -19. With Randle in the game (he even came in just a couple minutes into the third against starters), the Lakers were a +6. I think teams don’t quite understand that they should not attack him when he switches on to smaller players. He’s killing it on those plays. Randolph struggled against him trying to stretch the floor or face up. Later in the game, they finally adjusted to get him some low post touches against Julius. Still, he’s usually not bad at those either. Teams need to go after the other mismatches off those switches, which the Kings also tried doing a little. Overall, though, we were the better team whenever he was on the floor. Feels like he might be starting to get a little bit of a rep from the officials as a good defender. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 6-9 shooting (2-3 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He attacked and threw it away. He worked the post and hit the jumphook. Quick spin on Zach and he scored the layup. He threw a pass away trying to thread it to a cutter. He missed a short one on the break. He hit JC with the DHO for the three. He attacked the paint and missed the floater. He posted up and hit the turnaround in the middle of the lane. Sloppy pass on a weird angle as Ingram was fronted, turnover. He dunked off the two-man game with Lonzo. Second Half: He swiped the ball from Randolph. He blocked a jumper on a guard on iso (this after Randolph tried to iso with no luck). He got the stop on Randolph on one end, pushed out the rebound and took it for the score. He stole the ball on the perimeter, pushed it out, got lots of contact with no call and the layup rolled out. He sized up Randolph, attacked with speed and scored the And-1 over him, he missed the FT. He telegraphed a pass, turnover. He bounced to Clarkson for the And-1 layup. He drew FTs following the Kuzma layup on the break, he made both. Pressure perimeter D on Randolph and he forced him to throw it out of bounds.

Clarkson -- -- Man, sometimes he can go into black hole mode pretty badly. That drove me a little nuts in this one. As soon as he got it, shot was up on too many possessions. He led the bench in scoring but also had the -14 getting steamrolled early in the fourth quarter. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-15 shooting (2-6 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He missed a baseline jumper off the inbounds. He missed a putback. He kicked out to Brewer for the three. He sank a three straight away on a swing pass. He sank another three off the DHO with Randle. He attacked right and couldn’t finish the layup. He missed a long wing three. Another chuck as soon as he touched it and he missed the three, sheesh. He dunked on the leakout and long outlet pass. Second Half: He attacked in early offense and hit a tricky baseline layup. Good rip on help D to get a stop. He was called for a travel on a drive. He got tapped on a three. He traveled again off a jumpstep shuffle in the paint. He missed a corner three. He cut, Randle bounced it to him and he scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He was blocked on a drive, three the other way. He attacked the paint, spun and hit the And-1 floater, he missed the FT. He iso’d and missed the pull-up (pass the ball).

Brewer -- -- He was on fire, hitting two three’s in the first half. He also drew a couple offensive fouls on Kings to get stops. Kind of surprised he fell out of the usual rotation in the second half when he was hitting threes and playing good D. Seemed like a strange one to not play him in the second half. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-3 shooting (2-2 from three) to go with 1 assist, 1 steal and no fouls in 8 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He made a corner three on a kickout. He missed a runner in transition. He got dumped trying to get back on D and drew the foul call. He sank another three straight away off the swing pass. He drew a charge on a baseline drive to get a stop. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Bogut -- -- Luke went to a weird Lopez/Bogut lineup as the Kings had two bigs in. Glad he didn’t leave this experiment out there very long. Nance will be back soon, so we shouldn’t see that again. And, well, there’s Deng, but they’d have to thaw him off. I was kind of surprised we went to Lopez again to start the fourth instead of Bogut. That sealed the fate. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot and had 2 boards, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 6 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He blocked a layup. Illegal screen on the two-man sequence. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Ennis -- -- Garbage time run for him. Good challenge on Mason drive to force a miss but not much else of note. The Stats: He didn’t have any stats in 1 minute. He was a +2. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Hart -- -- He came in with 4:14 in the third, Lakers down 11, for Kuzma. Good to see him knock down a three. He also hit the boards well. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-1 shooting from three to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and no fouls in 10 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He swished a three on a kickout.

Zubac -- -- Got in for the final minute. Nothing of note. The Stats: He didn’t have any stats in 1 minute. He was a +2. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Walton -- -- Luke called a timeout with the score tied 8-8 after 5 minutes. Lopez not looking good on either end and the Lakers taking a lot of threes… Tied still when Ball sat with 5:21 for JC… Randolph with 11 of the Kings 15 points against Lopez. Randle in for Lopez… Ball back in for KCP, different rotation… This unit quickly fell back by 12… Brewer in for Kuzma… The Lakers trailed 31-19 after the first quarter… He started a Bogut, Randle, Brewer, Ball, JC unit… Now a Lopez/Bogut combo on the floor. What?... Kuzma finally in for Bogut… Randle back in after Lopez gave up more points… Starters with Randle instead of Lopez… Kuzma picked up his third foul. Brewer in for him… The Lakers trailed 54-41 at the half. Lakers 0-4 from the FT line… Luke with a quick hook when Lopez couldn’t hang with Randolph. Randle in with 9:27 left in the third… Randle started to make some things happen defensively and the Kings called timeout, still up 11… JC in for Lonzo… Great lob set up for Ingram out of a timeout… The Lakers trailed 76-67 heading into the fourth… He started a Lopez, Kuzma, Ingram, Hart, Clarkson lineup… Down 16 quickly after not even 2 minutes and Luke called a timeout… Down 18 when Randle finally returned… Ball in, as well…

First, but....

What's up with the Lakers giving up those first half leads to opponents? Seems like a regular thing lately.

Randolph has become quite a laker killer the last few years

It's extremely frustrating that luke never seems to handle matchups right. Even in wins we are scratching our heads. In losses it's just painful

Need to try out T. Bryant at the 5 and see if he can give something to the team.
Lopez is awful. Embiid torched us a few games back and now Zack and WCS having a field day. smh

The center spot is a huge concern.

Thanks DB. I thought this would be a tough game for the lakers because the back to back for a young team which used up a lot of energy to come back last night. This was one of those maturity/mindset type games when it would be hard to have the energy and they showed that they just aren’t at that stage yet.

Win or lose, Lopez is hurting the team lately. They really need more from him to succeed.

If Lopez is a liability on defense AND offense, why is Lopez on the court?

What can Luke do to have Lopez continue/return to being effective at the 3pt line and in the paint?

Simmons has Embiid, Lonzo has Lopez or Randle - Lakers are at a disadvantage

I'd consider bringing Lopez off the bench. With Kuzma starting, Randle at C would bring us more balance. Lopez off the bench could be a great scoring option against scrub Cs.

It wouldn't work, probably. Randle is just too undersized against starting Cs. Remember how Embiid eat him alive?

It will be interesting how Nance would change the balance in the front court. Maybe start Randle-Lopez? If only Zubac had had the same progress as BI...

Let's definitely blame Luke for Brooks ability to play Defense or put the ball in the rim suddenly. You don't bench the guy because you don't have a better option behind him. Don't tell me Randle because you will be complaining in a week about how Luke is crazy for thinking randle can guard starting 5s with his lack of length. This isn't a matter of Luke, this is a matter of Brook lacking footspeed and will.
