Battle Los Angeles… Both teams certainly stressed defense when they went into the halftime with the Lakers lead 62-60. There was no defense in L.A. tonight, however.

The Lakers had an 8-point lead in the fourth and it was quickly erased on a two possession where the Clippers scored 7-points. Austin Rivers got away with a lane violation that turned into a 4-point possession on one of those. That changed the momentum. Lou Williams with most of those points, and a whole lot of others.

The Lakers failed to contain him. They looked to switch against Williams, which just left our bigs at his mercy. He’ll eat that up all day, especially when hot, and he did as he led the Clippers with 42 points on 21 shots.

They should have made him a passer and should have done so early in the game. That came back to bite them. Key defensive stand for the Lakers in the final minute. They let Williams go around a weak blitz by KCP and Nance to score the dagger.

“Unfortunately, we did not execute well enough defensively to win tonight,” Luke said.

Game plan and execution was poor as the Lakers fell 120-115.

“We gave him just one look the whole night and we should have been aggressive,” KCP said of defending Lou.

Ball -- -- He picked up his third and fourth fouls a minute and half into the second half and that limited him some in the second half. When he returned, he had a couple big miscues in the fourth – a big turnover on a hit ahead to Randle in transition (it was open, just too far off on that pass). Then, he missed an early offense three shortly later. Not the ideal shot when he’s stone cold. He finished with the 1-7 game (going 1-6 from three). Ugly. Not a lot of rebounds in this game like we’re used to, and he wasn’t quite as sharp as he’s been defensively. Neither of our two star rookies were. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-7 shooting (1-6 from three) to go with 5 boards, 7 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnover sand 4 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He missed a corner three. He hit KCP for the open three. He found Larry in the paint off the two-man game for the floater. He hit KCP in the corner for the three. He choked a layup trying to finish with his left unnecessarily, we got it back to him and he hit the corner three. He swiped a ball in the backcourt and tracked it down. His pass was picked off in the paint shortly later. Not close on a three, he got it back and bricked again from three. He found Lopez on the roll in the paint for the score. He kicked to Larry for the baseline jumper. No assist on the play, but great, quick repost to Larry who had Lou on him in the paint (Larry missed, then tipped it in). He drew a moving screen call fighting through the screen. He had 3 points, 2 boards and 5 assists at the half. Second Half: He hit Ingram on the break for the dunk. Too far on the hit ahead to Randle with 2:24 and it went off his fingertips. He then missed a big three in transition. He didn’t draw iron a deep three off an inbounds.

Lopez -- -- Several of the Lakers slow starts have happened when Lopez has come up empty on a series of attempts early in the game. Tonight, we had the same thing and fell 8-2 before he sat with foul trouble after 3 minutes and a ton of missed shots during that time. Really little impact in this game. Kind of wish he could have gone up against the Clipper bench bigs. He’s just been awful lately. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-8 shooting (0-2 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 2 blocks and 4 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: He missed a jumphook in the post to start the game. He missed a corner three on a kickout. He missed a jumphook in the middle of the paint. He spun in the paint and bricked. He picked up a second foul and sat with 8:40 left after the poor start. He scored a short one on the tight screen-roll in the paint, then picked up his third foul on the other end. Second Half: He handed off to Ingram for the And-1 layup. He missed a jumphook. He missed the wing three. He finally hit a jumphook with Jordan sitting. Great help D block at the rim to stop a layup. He missed a layup on a rim run but drew FTs, he made one.

Ingram -- -- Foul trouble limited his action severely in the first half. With Nance back in the lineup that may crowd the paint more as teams sag off our PF spot (and our C lately). Good open to the second half with a series of finishes at the rim that forced a timeout. He was able to get to the rim pretty consistently to manufacture points. The jumper was missing in action and when they gave him that late in the game, he missed a couple big ones. He also left 4 points at the FT line that we could have used. Got to get that shot down and then he’ll be a handful. I liked how well he was able to attack and finish in this one. Just so much improved over last year this time. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-10 shooting (0-1 from three, 5-9 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 5 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -18. The Action: He drew FTs in transition and made both. Rejected easily from behind on a slow gather and pull-up from 16 feet. He iso’d and was stripped, then fouled Blake on the other end on the lob challenge. He attacked a crowd and charged. Second Half: He got a switch on the perimeter, attacked left and scored the layup. He took the baseline handoff from Lopez and scored the easy And-1 layup, he made the FT. He lulled his man to sleep, crossed over to his left and took it for the dunk. Hesitation then an explosive attack down the middle of the paint to just miss the And-1 layup, he missed both FTs to come up empty on that play. He attacked left and was blocked in transition. He got it back on the break and drew FTs this time going right, he made one this time. He was called for a turnover stepping on the baseline on a drive. He charged in transition next time down to pick up his fourth foul midway through the third. He cut off ball and scored a layup. He crossed over and flipped in a layup over defenders. He crossed over to lose his man and drew FTs at the rim, he made just one. He blocked Jordan on one end, then dunked in the breakaway scramble shortly later. He missed a pull-up 18-footer. He missed an open corner three. XXX

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Streaky as hell. He had 16 first quarter points to help dig the Lakers out of an early hole. He couldn’t knock down a layup in this stretch, but hit from all over the perimeter (4-5 from three). He finished the half with 20 points on 8-15 shooting. There was a stretch in the second half where he missed seven straight shots before hitting a wild elbow turnaround with 48 seconds left to cut it to 1. A lot of shots tonight. Defensively, really a non-factor…which hurt. The Stats: He scored 29 points on 12-28 shooting (5-11 from three) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 3 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 37 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He sank a long sideline jumper in early offense. He choked a layup on a dive down the lane. He attacked the paint and blew the layup again. He sank an open sideline three off good ball movement. He swished a baseline pull-up off the Bogut post. He swished a corner three off the set play. He stole the ball and then set up Lonzo later in the possession for a three. He couldn’t finish another layup on a drive. He scooped up a loose ball, pulled up and swished the transition three. He curled to his right and missed the three with contact and no call. He missed a tag and gave up a layup. He sank a corner three in transition. He swished a rainbow floater from about 10 feet out. He tried to step in and draw a foul on a three, missed the shot but followed it as soon as he threw it up and scored the putback, great effort. He missed a tough three at the buzzer. Second Half: Horribly run break, thinking about a three, moving in then missing the 15-footer after hesitating. He missed an open wing three. He sank a drifting pull-up from the left wing. He threw a pass away on a drive. He got past his man and hit the pull-up 10-footer from the right side. He swished a quick-fire three from the top of the key. He couldn’t finish a lefty layup. He got tapped on a long pull-up jumper. He missed another one next time down. He missed a corner three on a kickout. He missed a wild floater out of a timeout. He missed a pull-up wing jumper. He swished a wild turnaround elbow jumper after nearly losing the ball.

Nance -- -- Back in the starting lineup. I didn’t think Luke was going to let him lose his job to injury and that was confirmed prior to the game. Whether he keeps his job we will have to wait and see. We’ve got a rookie who has been leading the team in scoring. That’s hard to keep contained, especially when the D remained pretty much similar statistically when Larry was gone (Kuzma was poor tonight, however). But Larry showed his usual excellent hustle play with the pass deflections and hitting the floor for loose balls. Some good moments ripping the ball from Griffin. He ended up with 4 steals. Didn’t like the D against Lou in any of those situations, including that last big bucket. “We should have done a better job in coverage,” Nance said. Good to have him back in the mix and healthy. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-7 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 8 boards (3 offensive), 4 steals, 1 block and 5 foul sin 30 minutes. He was a -18. The Action: He stripped Blake with a nice perimeter reach. He swished a floater in the lane. Same play with Lonzo and he missed the floater this time. He flagged a perimeter pass and it led to a JC breakaway score. He forced Griffin into a jumpball on iso D, he couldn’t win it, though. No hesitation and he knocked down the baseline jumper. He missed the short one on the mismatch against Lou, but scored the follow tip. Second Half: He grabbed an offensive board and missed the jumphook. Griffin tried to swing through on him and Nance yanked it away to ignite the break, he couldn’t finish the lob on the other end but JC scored it. He scooped up a loose ball and scored an And-1 layup, he made the FT.

Kuzma -- -- To the bench for Nance and Kuzma had 10 points on 4-5 shooting in the first half (and a couple really wild passes out of bounds…) The three ball has been looking smooth lately. Wondering if we can try him at the SF a little more now and see if he fares better there. He struggled a bit defensively tonight, allowing guards to get a running start on him instead of staying in front of them like he usually does. He also couldn’t pull down defensive boards consistently. If he’s at the PF spot, he’s got to do that. Offensively, even though he had those two passes out of bounds, he had some excellent finds of teammates. Really, just the one behind-the-back pass that was ill-advised and you can live with the other. Liked that he was looking for teammates as he can be an excellent passer. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-7 shooting (3-5 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a +12. The Action: He probed on the perimeter and pulled up for the 17-footer. Swing pass to Hart for the three. He missed a sideline three in transition next time down. He attacked the paint and fired a pass to Brewer cutting baseline for a reverse. The offense stalled so he swished a three straight away. Nice pass deflection out of bounds zoning up the weakside. He swished one of those Nash-like one-footed running jumpers (so hard to defend). And he went behind his back in transition to throw it out of bounds. Wild turnover again on a kickout (he should have tried to finish the layup). Subbed in for the final possession and he drained a corner three on one end, then a charge on Blake on the other. Second Half: He drew a charge as we gave up the ball in the backcourt and he beat a man to the spot. He cut behind a screen, took the pass and knocked down the three. He missed a sideline three on a kickout next time down (same play, but a different variation to get him open). Good job changing ends and he drew FTs on the finish, he made both. Wow, great read as he was open for a three but spotted Brewer free under the hoop and sent him a bullet for the layup.

Randle -- -- He put a lot of guys on the floor offensively tonight. Half the time a foul on Randle, half the time on the Clippers. Good job getting to the line for 10 FTs (and making 7), but got to be careful with some of those straight line drives or post-ups against smaller men. He missed both attempts from three, including a big one with 1:45 left. In for Bogut and he matched up with Jordan briefly early on, then had him later in the game. Some of our better D was when Randle switched onto Austin Rivers and they went one on one. Luke would sit Randle in the final minute, however. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 2-5 shooting (0-2 from three, 7-10 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 block and 3 turnovers in 24 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He was fouled on a reverse attempt after taking an interior feed, he made both FTs. He posted up and charged. He sank a pull-up midrange jumper, no hesitation. He bricked a turnaround next time down. He took a pass in the paint on the break and delivered some serious contact to draw a blocking foul in the restricted area, he missed both FTs. Back to the line on a foul in transition and he made both FTs. Mustard off the hotdog going between his legs wildly on a pass for a dunk the other way. He missed a three on a kcikout. Offensive foul going for a board against a smaller player and using an off arm. Second Half: He posted up the smaller man and hit the jumphook. He drew FTs taking a pass in the middle of the paint and knocking a man down, he made both. He was fouled filling the lane on the break, he made one FT. Wild attack in transition right through Griffin, easy charge call. He spotted Ingram cutting for a layup. Back-to-back good possessions on Rivers on iso defensively. He missed an open three with 1:45 left.

Clarkson -- -- He had a flurry of scores to start the third quarter to give the Lakers a 6-point lead and force a timeout. We might have used him to close this game out instead of sitting. He was causing the Clippers all kinds of issues, and the offense went dry and the shots started getting wild late in the game. Good job taking advantage of switches when he had them, but he also was looking for teammates in this one (thus the 5 assists). Great job on the boards, as well. Kind of like JC looking upset from the bench as we closed the game. I’ve always wished he was a little more pissed about losing. “Definitely, a sour taste but you can take things from this game,” Clarkson said. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 8-12 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 8 boards, 5 assists, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He missed a forced 20-footer. He pushed out the break and hit KCP in the corner for three. He attacked the paint and hit a cutting Hart for the layup. He missed a floater, we got it back to him and he missed a layup, then tipped it in. He grabbed a Randle miss and hit the short one in the paint. He scored a layup on the breakaway. He circled around the perimeter on a dribble, then was stripped in the paint, ugly. Second Half: He scored the follow up putback on the break. He ran the clock down, got a running start to his left and hit the pull-up jumper. He crossed over and hit his floater in the lane. Griffin on him, he crossed over and hit the pull-up 19-footer next time down. Heat check and he drained the three on the quick pull-up on his next touch. He got caught into the air on iso and missed a wild attempt.

Brewer -- -- A little chemistry between him and Kuzma in this game. Kuzma found him with a couple feeds under the hoop for Corey’s two scores. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-4 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals and 1 foul in 11 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He crashed the glass, got the board and fed Clarkson who missed, then scored. Great hands to catch a hot pass from Kuzma and reverse. He stole a ball in the backcourt, then missed a corner three. Second Half: He couldn’t finish the lefty layup off the slash in early offense. He popped free under the hoop and Kuzma sent a bullet to him for the layup.

Bogut -- -- Some early run for him with Lopez getting into foul trouble quickly. Just kind of a warm body out there tonight. Not much more. The Stats: He didn’t shoot or score and had 1 assist in 7 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He hit KCP on the two-man game for the jumper. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Hart -- -- Some big minutes for him tonight as we had some guys in foul trouble. He led the team with the +/- with +17, but certainly got some education going up against Williams at times. Not easy for a rookie, nor advisable. For his scores tonight, he knocked down his only three and was setup by JC for a layup. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-3 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist and 2 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +17. The Action: He missed a layup, but got it back to reset the offense. He sank the corner three on the swing pass. He cut off of JC’s dribble penetration, took the pass and scored the layup. He forced his man into a turnover off the dribble. Quick swing pass to Kuzma for the corner three. Second Half: He got caught in the air and gave up three FTs to Lou on a fouled three.

Walton -- -- Defense was pretty awful tonight. We let Lou go off and never took the ball out of his hands… Bogut in for Lopez with 8:40 left when he picked up a couple fouls, Lakers down 8-2… Timeout when KCP played a screen poorly, allowing Lou to go left and hit a three (needed to fight a step more to get to the other side of the screen before shading)… Ingram picked up his second and had to sit with 5:13 left, Lakers down 9. Hart in for Ingram, Kuzma in for Nance… They cut it to three, then quickly trailed by 9 after giving up a couple threes. Luke called a timeout… KCP on fire so Luke set up a corner three for him off a deadball… JC and Randle in… The Lakers trailed 34-32 at the end of the first quarter… Randle, Kuzma, Brewer, Hart, Clarkson lineup to start the second quarter… Luke called a timeout to bark at the team after giving up a transition score off a hotdog pass from Randle. Lakers up 3… Kuzma hotdogged a pass out of bounds a couple seconds later for another turnover… Lopez, Ingram and Nance back in… Ingram with his third and he sat for Ball with 6 minutes left, score tied… JC in with the starters… Lopez out with his third foul for Bogut with 2 minutes left… Hart in for JC… He subbed in Kuzma for the final offensive play and he hit a three… The Lakers led 62-60 at the half. The Lakers were 8-18 from three… Lonzo quickly picked up his third and fourth foul with 10:32 left… Ingram picked up his fourth foul and sat midway through the third quarter. Kuzma in at SF? No, he went with Hart up 2… Down 1, JC in for Ball with 5 minutes left… With 3:28 left, he went with Randle and Kuzma for Nance and Lopez, down 1… The Lakers led 89-87 heading into the fourth… He started the Randle, Kuzma, Brewer, Hart, JC lineup like he went with to start the second quarter… Lakers pulled out to an 8-point lead, but gave up a 4-point possession and fouled Lou on a three on back-to-back possessions… Up 1, he went with Nance, Randle, Ingram, KCP and JC… Luke called a timeout down 3 shortly later… Ball in for JC out of that… With 48 seconds left, he brought in Kuzma and sat Randle for a defensive stand. Weird. I know he wanted Kuzma in there offensively, but he’s been off defensively and Randle was getting some stops… Luke definitely struggled finding a good mix of two-way ball tonight and admitted as much after...

Thanks DB. Inexcusable loss.

-Free Throw shooting has to improve to at least a respectable %
-Luke is officially on the clock imo
-If you are going to play the merit card, better be straight up or you will lose the players.
-One step forward (nuggets win/necessary comeback against bulls) followed by two steps backwards with bad habits again.

Don't understand luke not playing kuzma more; only 19 minutes. Just ridiculous, especially with how smooth he was shooting.

Luke's odd use of personnel is mind boggling at times.

15 points on 7 shots. Nah, we don't need that kind of offensive efficiency.

So we hired the director of NBA Analytics to help with our own Analytics department, am I to understand that he has crunched the numbers and determined that starting Larry and cutting Kuzmas minutes in half is more beneficial to our team? You are telling ME that the numbers are telling THEM to play Corey Brewer and Bogut?

I know luke can't hit these guys' FT for them, they are professionals and have to perfect that on their own....and that's what pretty much cost us the game. But this awesome Larry Nance JR starting lineup netting 4 points in the first 6 minutes and dug us a hole...is anybody in the FO looking at any of this?

No way Analytics is telling Luke to do what he's doing, dude is kind of wack. I appreciate he has the guys playing D, but Kuzma's bad ass...if he can't take Larry's spot then he should take BI's. He's better than either of them.

Just a devastating loss considering it's games like this that are supposed to win.

I won't say that Luke should be fired, but we are underperforming by at least 3 games. The team has enough talent, athleticism, youth, and hunger to win more.

I have to continue commenting on this game, and this post just continued to fuel similar frustration in me.

Let's look at what Luke decided to do: I'm gonna start Nance, Lopez, BI, KCP and Ball. I want to run a ball moving offense that has good spacing and and can hit the 3.

So going into the season the rationale was ok, with THAT starting lineup BI, Ball, Lopez, and KCP will all be deep threats.

Problem: Through 20 games only guy in that lineup around the NBA average is KCP, and he is streaky as heck. Lonzo - we know the story. Ingram's 3 has been below average, as has Brook's, and Nance's is non existent. Thus, no spacing. And of these guys I just listed only BI has a good game attacking the basket.

Conclusion: That lineup's offense is going to be *bad*. Deep ball isnt much of a threat and defense can collapse in to make life difficult for BI. In fact, most folks here in the LG game thread were predicting that as the game started. Didnt even require advanced analytics, just watching these guys play over 20 games to make the prediction.

Its like Luke wasnt even paying attention at all and decided "well, my plan was to have this lineup at the beginning of the season, and thats what it will be"...he refuses to change unless forced to. Refuses to see the obvious.

Now sitting on the bench you have one guy shooting at about a 47% overall clip and 35% from 3 in JC and another, Kyle Kuzma, who leads your team in scoring and 3 point percentage and hits almost half his shots despite the fact he is shooting from multiple ranges. So what does Luke do? JC plays barely over half the game, while Kuz plays like 40% of the game.

Huh?!

If they want to create more spacing then do it. Play Kuz with BI LIKE THEY WERE and it allows BI more opportunities to attack the basket and Kuz to just be Kuz. These two have shown they can split a decent offensive load.

As an additional note when JC is on fire...you ride him. It was bizzare what Luke did there. KCP had fizzled out by the 4th but let him shoot; while his hot offensive player JC once again was pulled. Luke just doesnt get it. That's what Doc did with Lou Williams - dude had it tonight so just rode him to the win.

SMH. So frustrating. Luke really needs to start holding himself much more accountable and being tougher on HIMSELF. I just dont see THAT starting lineup giving us much hope in the weeks ahead.

Thanks DB!

A tight game won by a more experienced team.
But still this sums it all up better:

Walton -- -- Weird.

I'm really worried about Lonzo and Ingram. Both really bad shooters. This league is about shooting.. Not good

This is where I stand as well.

Thanks DB.
Disappointing loss.

^^This.^^

Thanks, DB! Was afraid that Nance returning would play havoc with Luke's already erratic decision making concerning rotations. Hoping for better things, moving forward.

Per the announcer, this game was easily winnable.

Some things I noticed throughout:
    * Brewer is very active off-the ball, overall a great utility player
    * Kuzma's scoring ability should be further exploited
    * Kuzma and Randle were throwing errant passes, rookie-like mistakes
    * KCP and Clarkson got greedy, stopped rotating the ball
    * KCP and Clarkson are good offensively but don't help team momentum, lost lead
    * KCP and Kuzma looked off Lonzo late in the game wide open
    * Some Lakers mentally gave up in the waning seconds of the game
    * The players on the floor should have fouled D. Jordan late
    * Luke should further tweak the lineup (bring back Ball and Lopez combo)

Don't understand luke not playing kuzma more; only 19 minutes. Just ridiculous, especially with how smooth he was shooting.

15 points on 7 shots. Nah, we don't need that kind of offensive efficiency.

Probably because he was being eaten up by Griffin. Probably should have gone Nance/Kuz to close, but overall, Kuz was bad defensively.

Bringing Nance straight back in for Kuzma was a breathtakingly stupid move. I'm also getting worried about the coaching. It's like Puke Walton all over again.

Honestly can't agree or disagree re kuz's defense in this game since the entire Laker defense was a sieve in this game. Considering Kuz played limited minutes it is probably safe to say most if not all of the team played poorly on that end as a unit.

If we did go with kuz/nance and say BI...who are the other 2 on the floor with them?

I 100% agree with you.

This was the type of game that is going to make Magic and Pelinka raise an eyebrow. The clippers are a mess and they have been getting their butts kicked until they got to face Atl, Sac and Lakers. They didn’t win last night so much as the lakers lost the game due to free throws, lineup rotations and terrible defense late in the game.

Can’t have that, and especially not against the clippers. I’m sure Magic and Pelinka are aware; Luke is going to show more in this next month. It’s as a big a month for him to show progress as it is for the players.

If a principle reason KCP was acquired for the strength of his on-ball defensive prowess, this game was a sad chapter in a short story.

The Starters have been putting the team in a hole. All but one of them were minus double figures. The two youngsters, Zo & BI, are just plain bad shooters.

Still looking for signs of growth from the players and the coach. Usually Luke finishes the game with guys who have earned the minutes by playing well throughout the game. Tonight I thought he went away from that by finishing with Zo and BI and not with JC and Kuz.

Shooting is superficial, playing the way the coach expects could be much deeper. Unfortunately, when Griffin was in the game we couldn’t have Kuz in and guarding him.
