Sooo Close, but No W… It’s fun watching the young guys grow game by game. If you’re like me, hearing Kyle Kuzma wasn’t available tonight to go up against the champs was big letdown.

His back spasms are also a reminder that the team needs to be careful with the young guys’ minutes.

But we still have plenty of youth to watch grow and some of them certainly did tonight. Brandon Ingram went off for a career high 32 points. Julius Randle scored 21 and once again locked down on D. And Lonzo Ball also hit three threes and dropped 10 assists in the double-double.

It was a heartbreaker for the Lakers, however.

The Julius Randle-led small ball unit went toe-to-toe with the Warriors, digging the Lakers out of a first quarter hole, then battling all night to give the Lakers a chance to take away a win.

Ingram had a chance to do just that in regulation. With 5 seconds left, we spread the floor for him. He attacked right and couldn’t finish the Warriors off with a buzzer beating drive. On to overtime.

Curry and Durant tag teamed the Lakers in OT, but the Lakers weren’t going down easily.

In the final minute, Ingram scored an And-1 drive (missed the FT), JC hit a three, then Ingram swiped the ball from KD on iso as he was running clock, attacked and drew FTs with 15 seconds left down 3. He cut it to 1.

After fouling Curry, he made just one FT, but we couldn’t get the subsequent defensive board as it was tapped into the backcourt. We had Ingram trying to body up Green at the PF (Durant against Randle on the other side). Ingram was walked (shoved) under the hoop and we gave up the vital extra possession. Two more FTs to Curry and just like that they were down by 4 with 6.5 seconds left instead of 3. Ball game.

“I love the way our guys competed defensively,” Luke said of the 127-123 OT loss to the Warriors. The Warriors scored 18 points in that overtime, but the Lakers definitely battled on D. So close to pulling off the unlikely W in this one.

Ball -- -- The double-double for Lonzo tonight. We needed the scoring from him with Kuzma out. Really didn’t understand what we were doing with him to start this game. He was barely involved in anything. His first quarter action only picked up after Lopez went to the bench. As the game went along, he looked more and more active and aggressive. In the third, he sank a few threes, scored a layup on a drive and was bloodied going to the floor for a loose ball on D. Great sequence. Cut above the left eye, had him looking like a fighter. He was certainly throwing some punches in that stretch. Very good game. We’re a much better team when he’s a threat to score. Maybe this will be a confidence booster for him, showing that he can compete and score against the best. A lot of minutes for him tonight. He wasn’t battling on the boards, so maybe the mileage was a little easier, but still. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-12 shooting (3-7 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 10 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 43 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: Great D bodying up KD and shading him baseline on the drive to force him to step out of bounds. He attacked the paint and missed with his left but Randle cleaned it up. He missed a three behind the screen. He attacked the paint and hit the short runner with his right. Nice read in semi-transition, spotting the D with their back turned and hit Randle for the dunk. He was fouled taking a post entry pass, he made both FTs. Quick swing pass to KCP for the three. He had 5 assists in the half. Second Half: He found Lopez in the middle of the paint for the And-1. The D sagged off him and he missed the three, way short. He passed up a three, Ingram gave it right back to him and he drained it. Ingram kicked out to him and Lonzo quickly fired and drained the wing three. He crossed over, attacked with speed and scored the layup. He stepped on the sideline pushing off. He swished a three when Curry went under the screen. He saved a pass on the break to Randle who scored a layup (not sure if they gave an assist on that). He missed a three in early offense. He missed the midrange pull-up. He missed a tough midrange pull-up on iso against KD. Nice feed to Randle on the screen-roll for the layup. Overtime: He missed a three in early offense.

Lopez -- -- Man, is he making a case for himself to come off the bench and for a poor contract next year. He’s just been awful with some consistency lately. It’s really been one of the bigger factors in some of our losses. Glad Luke played him just two stints (came in for the final play of the game, but he sat most of the night). Just killing me. Couldn’t wait for him to be off the floor tonight. He’s not spacing the floor. Teams don’t care if he’s out at the three line. He’s not effective in the post. And the pick and rolls, he’s never passing out of those and often settling for long floaters. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-5 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 17 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: Awful lob pass to Nance who was wide open and couldn’t get to it. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He drew FTs in the post and made one. He sank a baseline jumphook. He charged on smaller man using his off arm on a drive. Second Half: He hit the And-1 floater in the paint, he made the FT. He gave up a putback score to Zaza. He airballed a three in transition. Way off on a push shot from the FT line. Overtime: Came in for the final play.

Ingram -- -- Career high scoring night for Ingram. Had he done it in regulation, we would have won the game. His drive at the buzzer that didn’t go could have got the Lakers the W (he actually might have passed off to Randle for an easy score but that would have been bang-bang). He battled all night. Including a huge steal against Durant with 15 seconds left down 3 to cut it to 1 on BI’s two FTs. I can’t really blame Ingram for not securing the defensive board against Green. First off, why isn’t he on the other side against Durant with Randle against Green? Secondly, this is a must-get rebound with a likely timeout. Why aren’t we subbing in a bigger player to be sure? I guess we assumed Curry was hitting both FTs. Never assume. In any event, Ingram got walked (err, shoved) under the hoop (that’s on him, but shouldn’t surprise anyone as he’s still pretty light), the Warriors missed the FT and what could have been down 2 points, turned into down 4. But getting back to the overall game by Ingram, just a huge night for him. He had 14 points on 6-8 shooting in the first half, doing quite a bit of damage to the Warriors from the perimeter. Later in the game, the perimeter shot seemed to leave him, but he was able to get to the hoop multiple times for scores. When he can get that complete game going for him like tonight, this is what you hope to see from him. He and Ball are so young and you can just see the potential with them in a few years. I thought KD was going to get pissed with Ingram who caught Durant with three elbows to the chops tonight (and also hit Zaza in the face on a defensive challenge). Kid was deliver blows all night. “Brandon was up for the challenge,” Luke said, mentioning he was locked in all day, even prior to the game. The Stats: He scored 32 points on 12-21 shooting (2-2 from three, 6-7 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 2 blocks, 7 turnovers and 5 fouls in 44 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He answered KD’s jumper with a wing jumper of his own to start the game. He missed his next attempt from the other side. Offensive foul swinging through high on the drive and catching KD in the chops. He sank the sideline three on the swing pass from Larry. He scored a layup on the break on the great pushout and dish from Nance in transition. He tried to thread a pass over the D and it was picked off. He attacked Zaza on the switch and scored the layup down the middle of the lane. Bad lob pass on the break, turnover. He attacked was fouled twice with no call and missed the layup. He swatted a layup out of bounds. He took an outlet, backed it out and hit the sideline three. He swished a pull-up at the top of the key with a man on. Second Half: He nailed his man to the floor with a hesitation, attacked and dunked (Warriors wanted a carry). He missed a deep wing jumper. He hit Lonzo for a couple of threes. He attacked left, brought it back right and scored the drive off glass. Way off the mark on a lob to Lonzo from halfcourt (it was open). He missed a wing jumper on an inbounds. He swiped the ball from Curry on help D then outlet to Randle for the breakaway layup. He got the ball at the top of the three line, didn’t hesitate and attacked left and scored a lefty layup over a couple defenders (including catching Durant with another elbow). Next time down, his man gambled for a steal on a pass, Ingram attacked and hit the pull-up at the FT line as his man tried to get back in front of him. He was picked trying to iso against Bell again. He lost the ball again on iso trying to go behind his back against a different defender. He attacked right but couldn’t finish. He attacked right and drew FTs against Green, he made both. He attacked with the clock low next time down, spun middle and drew FTs again, he made both. Way short on a very good look at an 18-footer straight away. He iso’d and was tied up with 30 seconds left after falling, he didn’t win the jumpball. He attacked right on iso, but couldn’t finish the Warriors with a tough layup at the buzzer. Overtime: He bricked a pull-up on iso, not taking a shot fast enough before the challenge came. He attacked off the three line and flipped in a layup. He attacked right and scored the And-1 layup, he missed the FT to cut it to 3 (fading back on that one). He stole the ball from KD and was fouled on the push out with 15 seconds left down 3 still, he made both this time to cut it to 1. He missed a pull-up FT.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Curry had 6 points on 3-10 shooting in the first half. Between him and Ball, we were keeping him contained. Then he lit us up in OT. Offensively, he was his usual all over the floor self. Getting out on the break for some adventures in transition, hitting a couple threes (could have used one more), and getting in on some drives against Curry. I loved seeing him size up Curry from the wing and attacking him with the D not loading up. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 7-18 shooting (2-8 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 42 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He missed a wing three in transition. He forced Curry into a bad miss with some tight man D. He hesitated, attacked, spun and bricked in the lane. He missed a layup on the cut down the lane. Poor post entry pass and it was tapped away. He missed an open sideline three off great ball movement. He iso’d, chucked and missed right after he returned to the game. He attacked the paint for FTs and made both. Great cut off JC’s drive and JC found him for the score. He swished a quick-fire three off the swing pass from Lonzo. Second Half: Bad chuck from the wing and he missed. He missed a three straight away on some good ball movement. He was fouled on a three as Zaza undercut him, he made two of the three FTs. Wild drive in transition, turnover. He choked a layup in transition to blow Ingram’s highlight reel bounce pass. He hit a quick-fire three coming to his right. He pushed out the break, pulled up and missed the three. He attacked in transition and hit the runner in the lane. Quick strike on the hit ahead and he scored the layup. He missed a deep three up against the shotclock on a bad pass he had to rescue. He sized up Curry with a minute left, attacked him and hit the short And-1 runner at the front of the rim, he made the FT. Overtime: He missed a corner three. He attacked Curry from the wing and hit the short runner.

Nance -- -- He had 5 assists and 3 steals in the first half. Nance is getting so much better at defending passing lanes. It was frustrating last year when all too frequently he wasn’t using his talents to his advantage like that. We’re seeing it a ton more now. So we played this game without Kuzma and really in the second half, quite a bit without Nance, too. A lot of minutes for BI at the PF as the Warriors play their small ball. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting to go with 4 boards, 5 assists, 4 steals, 1 block and no fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He went to the floor to recover a loose ball. He missed a jumphook in the post. Nice swing pass to the open Ingram for the three. He ball-faked and missed the 14-footer. He swiped a pass on the other end, pushed it out and hit BI with a bounce pass for the layup. He swiped a kickout. He blocked a shot out of bounds. Second Half: He tied up Curry and won the jumpball. Uggh, he didn’t win a jumpball against Curry the next time and they hit a three.

Randle -- -- Is it really any question that one of the biggest reasons we are so improved on D is Randle this year? I just love it when teams try to get the switch with him and then attack him on iso. For the last couple of years, this is what we’ve talked about with going small with Randle. You switch everything and don’t worry about the defensive anchoring at the rim. It becomes less a factor. But Randle has also been pretty exceptional at challenging on help D at the rim, as well. You’ve got to find a way to keep him in the plans this offseason. Really wonder about the Luke/Randle relationship sometimes. Luke had the quick hook for Randle early in the second quarter of this one. Randle took a quick turnaround in the paint and missed. Luke looked ticked and immediately pulled him. Just seemed punitive rather than working with someone. Certainly, you have to do that at times, but it really makes one wonder about the relationship between these two sometimes. In any event, Luke also brought Randle back to close the half instead of Lopez. The Lakers went on a run then and took the lead. Randle had 12 points on 5-7 shooting and 4 boards in that first half. He was a +15 in his 9 first half minutes. Lopez was a -11 in his 9. So in the second half, Luke brought Randle in and kept him in the rest of the night. Clearly, we were better with him out there. The odd stat of the game: After that first half, Randle wasn’t credited for another board. A lot of that had to do with our switching D. Scoring wise, some good moments in transition and when we had the ball moving in the half court. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 9-13 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 block, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He cleaned up the Lonzo dribble penetration with a putback. He took the hit ahead from Lonzo a few seconds later and scored the transition layup. He up-faked, attacked left and hit the floater. He missed a quick-fire three in early offense (possibly thinking two-for-one). He was stripped on a pull-up at the buzzer. He quickly attacked Livingston in the post to draw FTs, he made both. He missed a quick-fire turnaround in the paint that angered Luke early in the second quarter. Nice challenge on a drive to force a miss. He dunked when Lonzo caught the D sleeping in semi-transition and threw a pass over the top to him. He sealed his man deep in the paint and hit with his right off glass. Second Half: Great job changing ends off a Lakers steal and we found him for the breakaway layup. He scored another layup off a save in transition by Lonzo that went right to him. He missed a hook across the lane. He dunked off the drive and dish from JC. He sealed Livingston, took the corner entry but couldn’t finish the easy And-1 layup, he missed both FTs to come up completely empty. He rejected a point blank layup to ignite a breakaway score for the Lakers. He got a stop on Green on iso in the post and we scored on the subsequent breakaway. He scored a layup on the screen roll with Lonzo. Then on iso D against Curry on the other end, he forced him into an airball with 1:10. He forced Durant into a tough shot to get a stop with 5 seconds left. Overtime: He was blocked from behind on a layup.

Clarkson -- -- Great game from JC with 21 points and 8 assists. We try to mitigate some of the traditional PG stuff with some our sets for him. When he moves the ball on his drives or on the perimeter, he’s just so much better. A couple of times, he looked like he might get caught in the air but was able to find teammates instead of force a shot and we scored off those. You could also see a little of Lonzo rubbing off on him on a defensive board and quick outlet down court to teammate for a score. I knew they would probably go to BI on that final shot in regulation, but JC wouldn’t have been a bad option either as he can seemingly get a shot off at will against anyone. In OT, he scored a big And-1 and a three to help keep us in the fight. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 9-19 shooting (2-4 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 8 assists, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He missed a putback. He attacked off the three line and scored the layup. He missed the leaning pull-up jumper from the midrange. He got caught in the air on a drive and found Bogut for a score. He attacked the paint, stopped, used his pivot and scored a layup. He was swatted easily on a drive. He scored a layup when Klay was lulled to sleep by JC on a cut and pass from Bogut. He attacked to his right and scored the layup. A little high on the lob pass to Nance and we turned it over. He drew an extra defender on a drive and hit KCP cutting for the score. He missed a tricky three at the end of the half. Second Half: He attacked baseline, missed, tipped it, missed, got it back and scored the layup. He was stripped on a pull-up. He curled into the paint, drew the D and hit Randle for the dunk. He scored a lefty layup on the break before tumbling to the ground. He got his man on his hip but couldn’t finish the leaning layup. He missed a tough chuck on iso, we got it back to him on a kickout and he hit the three. Nice hit ahead to KCP off a rebound and we scored on the break. Overtime: He missed a corner three on a kickout. He attacked the paint, spun and scored the And-1, he made the FT. He swished a three to cut it to 3.

Brewer -- -- A couple scrappy plays defensively, including a scramble on the floor with Nick to come up with a ball and ignite a break as well as a perimeter steal on a pass. Short minutes, as usual but we played well enough with him out there. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three to go with 2 steals, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He traveled in transition. Second Half: He slapped down a pass on the perimeter to get a stop. He barely hit rim on a handoff from Julius. He dove to the floor for a loose ball against Nick, won that and it ignited a break.

Bogut -- -- Brief minutes for him. He’s obviously very familiar with the Warriors and they are with him. The Warriors only played Zaza briefly and both teams were content to go small most of the night. He scored on a floater tonight for his points. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 assist and no fouls in 5 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He hit the floater in the paint. Out of a timeout, he hit JC over the top of the D for a layup. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Hart -- -- Good minutes for the rookie. Nice to see him back to scoring again by finishing at the rim. He also had some very good challenges defensively, as well. Nothing spectacular, but serviceable minutes. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-3 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He threw a kickout away after picking up his dribble. He was fouled on an elbow pull-up, he made both FTs. He attacked strong to his right and powered in the layup. Good challenge on a three to force a miss by Klay. Second Half: Nice help D on a big under the hoop to get a stop and push out the break, which he missed at the rim. He attacked the rim strong, absorbed the contact and scored the layup.

Walton -- -- Warriors toying with the Lakers starters to open the game, getting dunks and layups with ease… With Randle and Clarkson in alongside KCP, Ball and Ingram, the Lakers cut the Warrior lead to 5… The Lakers trailed 30-20 after the first, giving up 62% shooting… Bogut, Randle, Brewer, Hart, JC to start the second… Angry about a quick shot Randle took, he gave him the hook after a couple minutes for Larry. Randle was playing fine and the lead was cut to 6… He called a timeout a minute later as the lead went back to 9… Ingram in for Bogut, so Nance at C now… Starters in with JC instead of Lopez down 8… Nance out down 7 for Randle with 4 minutes to go… They cut it back to 1 and forced a timeout… An 18-4 run to close the half by the Lakers. Randle/Ingram small ball unit looking strong… The Lakers led 54-50 at the half. The Lakers were 9-10 in the first half… Lonzo on a hot streak, hitting threes and making a layup on a drive, but he had to go to the locker room with a cut above his eye. Luke took a timeout and they patched him up and brought him back… Lakers tied 74-74 when Randle came in for Lopez… The Lakers got a couple breakaway scores by Randle and the Warriors called a quick timeout… Tied up and JC and Brewer came in to run with Ingram, Randle and Ball… The score was tied 84-84 heading into the fourth… He went with a Randle, Hart, Brewer, KCP, JC lineup… Up 2 a few minutes later, we went with Randle, Ingram, Hart, JC and Ball… Down 5 a couple minutes later, Luke called a timeout and got on the refs case. Offensively, we’re starting to iso too much… Lakers tied it up at 100-100 with 4 minutes to go… Tied up with 5 seconds left, he called a timeout as the team was about to push it down court. On the inbounds, we got the ball to Ingram on iso with the floor spread. He couldn’t finish a tough layup to his right at the buzzer… Overtime: Two quick threes by Curry and the Lakers were down 6… They had to deal with that hole for most of the OT, but got back within striking distance… The inability to get that defensive board did them in. Should have gone big there at the FT line, then call timeout like we were going to…

First?

Thanks DB. I've just woke up and saw we had a close game. Now, read the summary here, watch Cachooka's highlights and, time allowing, watch it on League Pass...

Super fun game to attend. Too bad we couldn’t close it out.

Thanks DB.

DB great write up as usual. Lakers played well enough to win. They just have to learn how to close out games.

Ingram played a balance game, taking it to the rack, hitting mid-range, and threes. He needs to play this type of game every game.

JC also played a balanced game. He got his shots but also dished out. We need way more of this type of game from him.

Ball finally balled. He was sleeping in the first half and lacked aggression. Again need to see more aggression every game.

Randle did a good job as well.

Consistency is the key for this team. I would like to see steady improvement throughout the year. Hopefully this is a start.

I know the Lakers want Ingram to develop into a go-to scorer at the end of games, and he did have a step on his defender, but I really thought he was gonna pass it to Randle on the way to the basket as he had an absolute gimme basket when 2 guys rotated over to guard Ingram on that drive. Missed opportunity either way. Ingram will need to continue developing his body so that soft contact won't affect him so much like on that last regulation shot.

Lmao @ KCP's "adventures in transition". What a great way to put it

He's been one of the more fun "no, no, no, YES!!!!!" players in recent memory, and also one of the most frustrating...

Thanks DB. A 127-123 OT loss to GSW without Kuzma’s scoring; I’ll take it

Now we just need to start beating the clippers and kings of the world.

I think he needs to be part of the core. Ball, Ingram, Kuzma, Randle are young and can ball. There so much value in what Randle is doing defensively. You are going to need another big to deal with the few Embiid types you may come across but the game more often comes down to guards trying to get mismatches against bigs in crunch time. Randle just eats that up.

AAA DB

Just hoping they can build from this game rather than what seems to happen - they go back to playing poorly the next game.

Give me a Ball/George/Ingram/Kuzma/Randle lineup next season and I'm happy as a clam. If we can keep Clarkson, Nance and Hart with them while adding another 3 & D guy like a Danny Green with our remaining cap space (after, say, a Deng stretch), we're talking something there.

I would hope the Lakers could just fit in Green in that scenario without stretching Deng. At that point, if they're not gonna get another superstar player, just keep Deng around and deal with him the next offseason than saddle your team with dead cap space for several seasons.

Big Shot and Big Game’s Small Details (Curry’s Missed FT)

In the future, they hope that

1) Team will not relax during FTs

2) Don’t assume that shooters like Curry will make every FT

3) BI will set up in a better rebounding position to not allow Draymond “walk” him under the basket that will have the refs will call a foul

4) Have Ball “pinch” Draymond from behind to limit his opportunities

5) Have JC not go below the FT line

Ingram’s Drive

1) Once he felt contact, lean into the defender to either get fouled or a better shot falling towards the basket

2) Once the defender was leaning back, take a wide open shot (ala The Black Mamba)

Team competed and learning the small details that will lead to wins

Side Note

As teams are scouting all the talented “rookies” - today saw the first episode of “Hack a Simmons” that saw him take the most FTs in one quarter in NBA history because he can’t make them.

Is Julius vs Draymond and BI vs KD a better matchup for rebounds, would it have made a difference (recognizing that it would be harder for Draymond)

Seems like Bogut should start to get more PT over Lopez

In amongst all the extreme takes on our coaching and players you find, this has been an awesome year thus far. It's so fun to watch players developing in front of our eyes. Coaching, too. Hopefully people remember these kinds of games the next time our players (and, yes, even our coaching staff) put a stinker performance out there. They're growing.

Ingram has a long way to go, but he has flashes of just being a dominating presence on both sides of the ball. Long way to go, but there's so much to see there, even if it doesn't always show in the stats -- how the shot is created and missed is really important to take note of.

If Ball can get that shot going regularly it changes the game significantly, can't wait to see it. Much like Ingram last year (and this year), he's missing a lot of shots I'll expect him to make eventually, though obviously his shot is likely to need to be reworked unless he proves it's a mental/comfort issue the rest of the season.

God, I hope we keep Randle. I'd love to keep Clarkson too, but obviously if the 2 Max plan is set in stone (and we manage to get 2), then Randle has just shown way too much that's hard to replicate for us to get rid of him.

I thought KD was definitely going to exact some retribution. Especially after the last bow.

Randle has shut my critical backside up in a big way this season. I get what you're saying about the Randle/Luke dynamic. Is he just messing withe the dude? Is he just trying to keep JR pissed because he's much more effective playing with an edge? Does he not believe in Jules' endurance and ability to keep his level of play up for longer? Is he trying to showcase another player? All of the above?

Luke played him too long against Embiid, leaving him on an island and, other times, when Jules is killing it on both ends, he yanks him.

But one thing is for certain, if this keeps up, JR is about to get paid.

DB with the official endorsement for Randle as our C of the future?

I think he needs to be part of the core. Ball, Ingram, Kuzma, Randle are young and can ball. There so much value in what Randle is doing defensively. You are going to need another big to deal with the few Embiid types you may come across but the game more often comes down to guards trying to get mismatches against bigs in crunch time. Randle just eats that up.

A couple of things about Randle. One, missing his first year means that he's this good now, but would be absolutely better if he hadn't miss that year.

Two, there was a stretch of games last year that he was so dominant, that there was no question he was a part of the future core. I believe a few injuries kind of sidetrack that run.

The main thing about him was/is fulfilling his role as a defensive/rebounding force, and continuing to work on his three point shot. If he keeps doing that, then we have a rare, 6'9, strong as an ox, both quick and fast, fierce competitor.

Thanks DB, we appreciate your work.

Absolutely. That's what makes his Game 1, Year 1-robbing injury so grossly unfair. We wouldn't be talking about him as seemingly-automatic trade-bait if he had this kind of year in his actual THIRD year (i.e., LAST YEAR). Instead, we'd be salivating at the notion that Julius would be the kind of young player that would draw superstars to play here.

If, if, IF ('cause I'm rooting for him and don't want to jinx him) he can maintain this level through the bulk of the season, then I'm OK with only looking to lure one of the Big 3 (LBJ, RW, or PG-13 - preferably PG-13), or just going for the-sub-superstar players like Avery Bradley and guys like that.

This is what we've all been hoping for out of Randle. I just hope he keeps it going, because then he'll be a terrific long-term piece of this puzzle.

Growth game! One of those games where BI made you step back and go "Whoa!" Aside from getting to the rim and making jumpers, that steal from KD with a potential And1 was impressive. Of course, we'd all be skyhigh if he made the game winning shot.

Ok, my nit about the lost rebound - lack of floor leadership. Someone who recognizes the game situation and gets people in their right positions. Everyone (coaches included) assumed Steph would make the FTs - no subbing in a rebounder, BI and JR matchup mixup.

Tied up with 5 seconds left, he called a timeout as the team was about to push it down court

Disastrous move. If Julius gets the ball into Lonzo's hands right there, the game was about to end in regulation. I'm sure Luke doesn't get the irony when he speaks of "teachable moments" and "executing down the stretch", that his remarks apply at least as much to him as they do to the players.
