No OT Tonight… The Lakers fell flat in the second quarter with KCP bricking from three, Clarkson completely MIA, Randle picking up three fouls and little interior presence by Larry Nance. KCP and JC combined for 2-13 shooting for 4 points in the first half and the Lakers would trail by 17.

They would fall back by as many as 23. But they are a scrappy young team.

Kyle Kuzma would spark the team back to life in the third quarter with a series of impressive scores, and eventually they had the Warriors on their heels.

“Kuzma is a problem. I like him,” Kevin Durant said. Kuzma would lead the team again with 27 points.

The Lakers would take a 1-point lead in the fourth quarter after a three by Julius Randle. But despite the 27 from Kuz, 21 from Randle and 24 from Lonzo, who sank 5 threes, the Lakers couldn’t overcome the Warriors down the stretch. A couple of calls didn’t go their way and that’s all the Warriors needed, taking the game 113-106.

Ball -- -- Man, there are times when he’s going at high speed and looks like he’s about 7 years older with how fast, confident and decisive he looks. When he’s in attack mode with that confidence going, that’s the player you expect to see with consistency as his game matures. He improved that three shooting percentage tonight, knocking down 5-6 from three (not so much from the line where he went 1-4). He sank three threes from the left wing in the first quarter. He’d finish the first half with 12 points on all threes, but just 1 assist and 4 turnovers. A couple long passes not connecting that Luke didn't like on the road. He flipped that around in the second half with 4 assists and 1 turnover. He and Kuzma tonight are started to look like the combo we saw in the summer league. Good to see Lonzo joining him again. When they are both going, they make it a game. Just need more consistency and some others to join them. The Stats: He scored 24 points on 9-16 shooting (5-6 from three, 1-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 5 assists, 1 block, 5 turnovers and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He threw a pass away on a probe without purpose. He sized up and drained a wing three off ball. He hit Nance for a lob over a defender. He missed a tip. He attacked to his left and was fouled from behind (really needs to learn to use his body better on those), he missed both FTs. He measured and swished a wing three behind a screen. He sank another three next time down from the same spot. He missed a reverse he probably should have had. He threw an outlet away. He missed a puback jam. He attacked and missed a layup, but Kuzma cleaned up the dribble penetration. Bad pass, hesitating, score the other way. He swished a three out of a timeout. He missed a pull-up from the top of the key. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He attacked right with speed and threw it back left to Bogut for the layup under the rim. He attacked the paint and drew a blocking foul, getting undercut, he made one FT. He hit Kuzma trailing the break for the high speed layup. He finished the lob from Kuzma on the break. He hit Randle on the two-man game for a layup. He attacked, tucked the ball in, hung and scored the layup. He attacked, slammed on the brakes to lose a defender, pivoted and banked in the 5-footer. He missed a lefty layup on a drive and wanted the foul. He swished a three off ball straight away out of a timeout (just looking so confident on that one, you knew it was dropping). He scored a quick layup on a full-court drive.

Kuzma -- First time since Jerry West in 1961 for a Laker rookie to have three straight games over 25 points. He makes it seem like it’s easy to do. He started with Bogut again and a slow start for Kuzma to this game. We didn’t really run too much for him and it looked like he was maybe a little frustrated early on with not seeing the ball early on. He then garbage-manned his way to 8 points on 3-7 shooting or 7 boards in the first half. You’ve got to treat him as a top option. We started leaning on him more in the third quarter, quite a bit of iso for him, and what happened? He helped the Lakers chip away at the 20-point lead and bring us back in the game. He’d finish with the team-high 27 points to go with 14 boards. He is lighting up the best teams in the NBA. I’ve got to think we’re not pulling him out of the starting lineup for the rest of the year. Shoot, Luke didn’t want to pull him out of the game, running him 43 minutes. How about that left hand tonight on the finishes? Some very difficult ones he made look easy. His FTs have looked a little flat lately. Maybe the only little hitch in his run of late. “They’ve got some young athletic guys that can play,” Durant said, mentioning Kuzma should have been a lottery pick. The Stats: He scored 27 points on 9-15 shooting (3-6 from three, 6-8 from the line) to go with 14 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 43 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He back cut his man and earned FTs on the finish, he made one. Deep three, poor shot selection, and he missed. He was blocked on a dunk attempt. He attacked in transition and threw it away instead of trying to finish. His man went for a steal, Kuzma attacked and scored the layup. He iso’d, pumped and hit a tough leaning three. He dunked back in a missed Ball drive. He missed a three. Second Half: He was fouled on a dunk attempt on the break, he made both FTs. He took a pass across the lane, cut back across the lane again and hit the jumphook. He trailed the break, took the pass with speed and scored the layup. Quick attack from the wing against KD and he drew FTs, he made one. He swatted Iggy on iso. He stripped a man on a drive. He swished a step-back three on the other end. He lobbed to Ball on the break for the score. He was stripped attacking the paint. Quick attack across the paint for FTs, he made both. The play busted to start the fourth, he pulled it out and airballed a long three. He scooped up a loose ball to ignite a break. He drained a three on a kickout from Caruso. Brilliant finish over his head on the break at full speed against a strong challenge (left handed, too). Sweet reverse pivot swing through baseline to get past his man and he reversed around the help D with his left. He missed a pull-up from the wing. He attacked and threw a pass away.

Ingram -- -- The D was able to easily load up on him as he game was pretty myopic early on. He’s really got to get balance in his game (see KD). We also need to run him on cuts more off ball. We had that dialed in a few games ago, and had a nice one tonight for a dunk, but we need to be consistent with it. Late in the game, he had a chance to cut it to one possession on a drive in the final minute but could finish. When Durant is out there, that makes it very difficult. Occasionally, we got switches with Swaggy which he was able to score on. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-11 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 4 assists, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He missed a runner but quickly got his own miss and scored the putback. He lost an outlet he should have had (turnover probably went to Ball, but it hit Ingram in the hands). He missed a three, we got it back to him and he attacked for a layup. He attacked right and scored the layup. He iso’d us into a shotclock violation. Second Half: He took contact on a lob with no call. He missed at high speed, but Bogut cleaned it up. He attacked and lost the handle out of bounds. He attacked a crowd and was blocked, layup the other way. He missed an elbow face-up jumper. He attacked Swaggy and drew FTs, he made both. He iso’d and swished the wing pull-up over Swaggy. He cut and Randle found him for the dunk. He attacked and missed a huge layup with a minute left that could have cut it to one possession.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He was 0-5 from three in the first half and made one in 10 attempts. The three shooting and continued trigger throughout the game killed the Lakers most of the night. Defensively, he was very active and making things happen on that end of the floor. But some of these misses from three were off set play calls. Why are we going back to the well again and again when it was clearly dry? If you want to benefit from the defensive effort, you need to reel in the poor shooting, not feed it. Some bad calls that went against KCP late in this game and that helped the Warriors get separation. Tough break on those. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-16 shooting (1-10 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 4 assists, 3 steals and 3 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He hit Kuzma backdooring his man for FTs. He missed a wing three. He grabbed an offensive board and it led to an Ingram score. He curled into the paint, took the pass and fed Bogut for the score. He grabbed a Bogut airball and scored the reverse. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He missed a chuck from three coming off the screen. He missed a corner three, uggh. He missed yet another three. Second Half: He missed another three, looking closer anyway. He missed a runner. He attacked off the three line off a Ball kickout and scored a layup. He knocked a pass loose. He attacked off the three line and drew FTs, he made one. He slapped down a pass to ignite a break. He pushed out a steal and scored the layup. He bricked a pull-up three. He finally sank a wing three in transition off a swing pass. He missed a fading corner three on an inbounds, sheesh. Cheap foul call on a block from behind. He missed a wild runner, poor shot selection. Wow, looked like he drew a charge and the Warriors got two FTs off it. He missed a three coming off a screen on the other end and went down wanting the foul. He was blocked on a three.

Bogut -- -- Was wishing we were running him at C to close the first half as the team was getting picked part inside. Randle had foul trouble, Nance was awful. Should have gone back to him then but we took a beating instead. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-5 shooting to go with 3 boards, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 12 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He scored a layup off the setup from KCP. He airballed a jumphook. Second Half: He scored a putback off Ingram’s drive. He scored a layup set up by Lonzo’s drive and dish.

Nance -- -- I talked about Luke going back to the well with KCP’s three shooting when it was clearly dry. He tried to go back to the well with Nance at C in the first half in this one. It looked poor in the first stint, but the second stint in the half buried the Lakers. Thankfully, Luke adjusted in the second half and he kept Nance out of this one, closing with Randle. But you could tell the impact wasn’t there for Nance early. He wasn’t getting on the offensive glass and was disruptive defensively. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: He threw down the lob dunk behind a defender. He missed a one-hander in the paint. Great job going vertical to get a stop and the board. He stripped Swaggy on the perimeter. He and Hart (and Brewer) gave up putback off a FT miss, got to box out your man better. He gave up a putback score on one end, then an offensive foul setting a screen on the other. Not close on a layup in the paint. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Randle -- -- He started the second quarter at the C spot and we rotated Kuzma in with that lineup for a little more continuity from previous games. He had 10 points in 6 minutes, but his three fouls had him sidelined early with foul trouble. That limited his minutes tonight because he played a huge chunk of the minutes at the C spot in the second half. Some good moments pushing the ball out with speed and also hitting threes. He gave us the lead in the second half on one of his threes. He got blocked quite a bit in this one around the rim, but I’ll take the 21-point, 10-rebound games in 24 minutes every time. Defensively, I thought his communication with teammates was poor. There were a couple of switches that weren’t called out that we got burned on. The Warriors can do that to you, but there are so many little things going on with Randle and body language around the team that I worry about stuff like this at times. At some point here, Luke needs to throw him in with the starters and run with our best players out of the gates. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 7-16 shooting (2-3 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 10 boards (5 offensive), 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He airballed a jumphook. He trailed the break and dunked. Aggressive attack right and he drew FTs, he made one. He sank a three when the play busted. He attacked right and was blocked out of bounds. He up-faked, attacked off the three line and slammed. He traveled as he faced up from the elbow. He grabbed the board, pushed out in transition, hesitated, attacked and scored the layup. Illegal screen using his hands instead of body. Second Half: He jumped a passing lane to knock a ball loose and save it to Kuzma to ignite a break. He was blocked on a drive for a jumpball, which he won. He was blocked in the paint. He put back in a Hart miss on the layup. No communication with Caruso and Randle’s man dunked easily when there was no switch. He drew FTs on the interior feed from Caruso, he made both. He swiped a pass in the paint. They sagged off him so he drained a three. He was blocked on iso in the paint. He missed a rushed three. He scored a layup off the two-man game with Randle. He blocked a layup, then battled for a board to get the stop. He was blocked trying to power up in a crowd. Bad job matching up in transition to give up a layup. He hit Ingram cutting for a dunk. He was blocked twice trying to power up but drew FTs on the third attempt, he made both.

Clarkson -- -- Really slow first half again with misses on one end and poor D on the other. He and KCP combined for 2-13 shooting in the first half for 4 points. Neither got it on track. Clarkson was really out sync in this one. Both shots and passes seemed forced. We ran some Caruso out there to help. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-9 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 3 boards, 4 assists, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He iso’d and swished a 17-footer. He missed a three on a return pass from Ball. Wild layup attempt, not going glass when he should have. He missed a heave at the buzzer. He gambled, came up empty, didn’t get a good angle on his recovery and gave up a layup. He then missed a layup on the other end. He missed Randle open on a lob, then missed a wild drive. He was blocked on a drive. Second Half: He sank a pull-up wing jumper, a bit forced but it went. He missed a wing jumper on an inbounds. He attacked and threw it away.

Brewer -- -- Brewer had his big game for the month last time. He played just 5 minutes tonight and was a non-factor with no notes here. The Stats: He didn’t have any stats in 5 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: He did not play.

Hart -- -- Another of our guards who struggled to put the ball in the hole. But he was scrappy on D with the 3 steals. We went to some small ball lineups where he plays well in because of his deceptive strength, strong D and rebounding skills. Our shooting guards tonight, just could not shoot. At least with Hart, he doesn’t chuck. More minutes from him and maybe we reduce some of the KCP chucking. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 3 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 16 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He found Randle trailing the break for a dunk. He missed a three in transition. Second Half: He missed a layup on the break, bur Randle cleaned it up. He knocked a pass loose in the paint to ignite a breakaway score. He was stripped on a transition attack, layup the other way. He was blocked on the break as Randle gave it to him a little late.

Caruso -- -- A little more run and we start to saw just a little more confidence from him out there. He didn’t shoot, but he was getting more aggressive and starting to set up teammates. The team played well while he was out there. They just need more time to build some chemistry. I want to keep him in the mix and eventually release Ennis if we need to convert Caruso’s contract to an NBA one. We’ll see how that all plays out. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot and had 1 assist and 2 fouls in 7 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He kicked to Kuzma for the three. Extra pass in the interior to Randle who was fouled for FTs.

Walton -- -- Nance in for Bogut, Lakers up 3 midway through the first quarter… Lonzo sinking some threes in the first quarter to help keep the Lakers even… Kuzma and KCP out for Hart and JC, Ingram at PF, Lakers down 1 with under 3 minutes left… Small lineup with 3 seconds left and we gave up a putback when we couldn’t secure a defensive board… The Lakers trailed 27-24 after the first... He started Randle, Kuzma, Brewer, Hart and JC… KCP in for Brewer down 8… Starters with Randle instead of Bogut down 5… Randle picked up his third foul and had to with 5 minutes left… Ingram took a knee to the groin and Brewer came in for him down 10… Brewer back out for BI… Nance just looking awful. No presence in the paint. KCP bricking… The Lakers trailed 61-44 at the half… Quick timeout by Luke after 2 minutes and a couple more KCP bricks… Randle in for Bogut down 19, no Nance this time who played poorly in the first half… They cut it to 9, Kuzma sparking them… Caruso in for KCP… The Lakers trailed 84-72 heading into the fourth… He started a Randle, Kuzma, Hart, Clarkson, Caruso lineup. No rest for Kuz… They cut it to 5 behind Kuzma. Luke sat him to get him rest but for, what, KCP? Crazy lineup of Randle, Hart, KCP, JC and Caruso down 5 with the ball… They took the lead by 1 off threes from KCP and Randle… Down 4 when Lonzo and Ingram returned with 7 minutes left to go with KCP, JC and Randle… Kuzma in for JC with 6 minutes left down 5… They cut it down to 2 with 3 minutes left when the timeout came… A couple potential fouls that didn’t go our way and the Lakers trailed by 8. That’s was all the Warriors needed. No OT in this one, although the Lakers had a chance to cut it to one possession with a minute to go but couldn’t finish the layup…

Rather Zo and Kuz having great games in a losing cause than bad games in a win. The other pieces to the team including Luke are replaceable.

Appreciate it, DB. Missed the game but T&R is almost as good as watching.

I'd be getting sick if it was blown games against teams like the Clippers or Bucks like earlier in the season, but these last few are coming against the best of the best, with our youngins leading the way. It's hard not to feel good about that. I'm definitely more hopeful for the future than I was last season at this time, where not only were we losing, we were losing big and the core looked a lot shakier.

I'm definitely not getting sick of seeing a couple rookies take it to the best teams in the league. Great analysis as always DB - thanks!

Lonzo and Kuzma - great games tonight!

True indeed. I don't think I've ever been so proud of a team with a losing record.. the future is very bright.

Im just furious at the way kcp is playing. Why does luke even play him? You can clearly see that hes out there just to put up numbers. We look better without him. Get hart out there.

Did you mean a Lakers rookie with three straight games of 25? Because Kobe and Shaq used to out up 25+ over that many pretty frequently.

No moral victories but with Kuz and Ball, the Lakers have two longterm starters and core players for the next decade. Now we need to find a star at the 3 or 2 to build the offense around ...and to get some better defensive veterans. It's so obvious this team is missing defensive smarts. Need to get on that over the summer and do everythig we can to get a star we can build the offense around.

Kuzma will be a great #2
Ball will be a great #3 and director of the show.

Need the #1 and some defensive 3nD role players.

Thanks DB. These close losses suck, but for the culture Luke is building, it's worth it long term. These kids are getting the seasoning they need to grow as a team. Star players, veteran know how, experience, and some timely home cooking enabled the Dubs to escape with a W last night. Pretty soon we'll have the same advantages. But these growing pains are necessary for us to get to where we need to be.

Thanks DB. These games have been really competitive even though we've lost a majority of these games. They're great learning experiences and part of the process. Our schedule has been pretty brutal (6th hardest) and gets a little better starting in January. I'm looking forward to watching our young guys develop as the season progresses.

There was a lot of Jordan Bell hype here before the draft. It looks like we were right about him. He's a bulldog in the paint.

I hope BI figures out how to score without driving to the hoop; he's getting blocked regularly every game. Develop that 15 foot pull-up or a running Kuzma type hook, asap.

I never thought of KD as a defensive presence until this season.

Luke played KCP about 10 minutes too long. I'm not sure why he's not giving Thomas Bryant some burn.

Kuzma's the best scoring Lakers rookie I've ever seen (better than Van Exel, Kobe, Fisher).

Kuzma right now would be a great #2. I think he is a #1 in the few years call me crazy.

Thanks DB

I am up in the Bay for Christmas so I went to the game (wore my Pau jersey of course ). I'm not at the point where I'm tired of moral victories just yet. We're competing hard and displaying real talent against some of the best teams in the league, and every now and then we're beating them. We look like a real, emerging bball team again and that's exciting.
