December Can’t End Soon Enough… The Lakers took another hit to the starting lineup with Lonzo Ball out with the shoulder injury. If the game was barely watchable stylistically at times, TNT made sure it was barely listenable with Chuck, Kenny, Shaq and Ernie sideline covering the game.

The Lakers fell back by 10, but pulled back even with the TWolves at halftime. Both teams traded hoops in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Lakers let it get away from them. They gave up a 15-0 run, but weren’t completely out of it. With a little over 4 minutes left, Josh Hart hit a three on the break to cut it to 6 and had a chance to cut it to 4 on a layup, but Towns blocked him. The Lakers gave up a score on the other end and were in trouble.

“We were right there,” Luke said. Giving up 38 points in the fourth quarter killed them. The game was closer than the 121-104 score, but in the end just another L in the loss column.

Kuzma -- -- “His competitive spirit is pretty awesome,” Luke said. He sank 6 of the Lakers 10 made threes tonight. He had 16 points (and 3 assists) in the first half, sinking three of six attempts from three. He started the second half with another three in transition. He led the team with 31 points on 8-18 shooting. Luke said he’s been doing a better job of scoring organically within the offense and described what he’s doing as “impressive.” It’s funny, he says positives things, but he tries to keep it muted. There’s certainly a lot Kuzma has to learn, but you’ve got a rookie making 30-point games look easy. The vet polish, stronger D and decision making will come…but there’s a reason no Laker rookies in the past several decades have strung together a stretch of games scoring like this – it’s not easy unless you’ve got some serious talent. He had the most points on Christmas by a rookie since LeBron. Yes, TNT crew, Kuzma is better than Ingram right now. No slight to Ingram, either. The Stats: He scored 31 points on 8-18 shooting (6-11 from three, 9-13 from line) to go with 3 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 2 turnovers and no fouls. He was a -9. The Action: He missed a three on iso to start the game. He up-faked and drew FTs on the baseline, he made both. Quick And-1 layup in transition after a made TWolves basket next time down, he missed the FT. He was stripped in transition, turnover. He swished a wing three on a kickout. The D left him on a handoff fake so he hit the three. He missed a deep three. He stepped around man to steal a pass and found JC on the break for the score. He missed a wing three out of a timeout. Quick step baseline and he reversed. He swatted his man on iso D in the post on the other end. He attacked and kicked to Nance for the corner jumper. He missed a jumper from the top of the key. He drew FTs getting out on the break, he made one. He was stuffed by the rim on a breakaway lob, got it back and rushed a layup which he choked. He drained a wing three on the catch and shoot. Second Half: He swished a quick-fire transition three to start the half. He was stripped in the post. He missed a three, tough one with the footwork on that. He made a tech FT. Baseline attack to earn more FTs, he made both. He we fouled at midcourt on a heave for three at the end of the quarter, he made two FTs. He missed a tough step-back jumper on iso. He sank a three on a kickout. He missed a layup after blowing by KAT. He lobbed to Nance on the break. He drew FTs on a drive and dish from JC, he made one. He iso’d out of a timeout and swished a three. He missed a challenge wing three.

Clarkson -- -- Horrible first quarter, firing blanks left and right. He could not hit a thing. He got better in the second quarter and finished the half with 10 points on 13 shots. It would take him 23 shots to get his 17, so not an efficient night by any means. He struggled from the perimeter as the midrange or three ball wasn’t falling for him. Some good passing sequences finding teammates on the interior or for threes. Defensively, despite the 4 steals we had a lot of issues tonight giving up open shots. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 8-23 shooting (0-3 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 6 boards (4 offensive), 7 assists, 4 steals, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 35 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He didn’t hit rim on a pull-up jumper from 17 feet. He missed another midrange pull-up. He missed a deep three. He missed a pull-up at the three line. He missed a sideline three in transition a few seconds later. He missed a wild baseline chuck on iso. He missed a corner three. He finally scored when Kuzma hit him leaking out in transition. He missed a jumper, followed it up and scored the putback layup. He iso’d, attacked the paint and hit the floater. He attacked to his right in early offense and scored a layup. Wild pushout and he saved it inbounds to KCP for a three. He sank a tough, drifting, pull-up from the FT line. Second Half: He got tapped on a transition three. He snaked into the paint and missed a drive. He worked off the high screen and hit the pull-up jumper. He choked a layup off a great feed from Kuzma. He missed a pull-up 17-footer. He scored a layup off the interior feed from Randle. He missed a wing jumper. He clanked another jumper. Nice interior feed to Nance for a dunk. He iso’d against a big, attacked, took contact and muscled in the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He set up Kuzma for FTs. He attacked and looked fouled with no call (fans with the “refs you suck” chants after that one).

Hart -- -- Win or lose, getting him big minutes against ballers like Butler is at least a positive for the team. “I thought Josh Hart was really darn good tonight,” Luke said. He had a big sequence in the fourth where he swished a three and then drove for a layup that was swatted. “I didn’t think he was going to recover as quick as he did,” Hart said. The TWolves scored on the other end and the lead went from potentially 4 to 8 and that changed the complexion of things down the stretch. He’s outplaying KCP and his $18 million lately. Defensively, he mixed it up well (looked like he’s been playing a few years out there). Luke was especially impressed with his rebounding, which we needed help on with our smaller lineups. He’s coming along well. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-13 shooting (2-8 from three) to go with 6 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 39 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He missed a wing three. He took a handoff, curled into the lane and jammed with his left. He got tapped on a corner three. He attacked off the three line, took body contact and muscled in the layup. He missed a three out of a timeout. He attacked, spun and missed the jumper in the middle of the paint. He missed a wide open wing three. Second Half: He chased down the loose ball, pushed it out and scored the layup against a couple defenders. He swished the wing three on the swing pass. He got middle off the screen and hit Randle for the dunk. He slapped a lob off the board to get a stop. He swished a three in transition (measured it and knocked it down). He was swatted on a layup attempt with 4 minutes left shortly later. He missed a wing three. Backcourt inbounds pass stolen. He missed a deep three on the final possession.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He’s been wearing thin on fans with the shot selection and bricks. He killed momentum in the fourth with an awful attempt from three in the corner in transition -- no balance, no control and he wasn’t even close on the shot. That was the final nail in the coffin for the Lakers. Coaches still need to reel him in more, even though it’s looked a little better (hard not to be worse). Some of the wild, off-balance attempts are just wasted possessions. The Stats: The Action: He took a handoff, curled into the lane and dunked. He attacked the paint, took contact, went down with no call. He missed a 21-footer. Off-balance airball on iso against the shotclock. He sank a three on Clarkson’s near turnover save from out of bounds. He swished a three curling to the ball from the left. He missed a wing three at the half. Second Half: He missed a sideline three on a kickout. Horrible inbounds pass, easily picked off. He missed a lefty layup. He missed a three on a kickout. Total brick on the break with 2:25 left, just awful.

Bogut -- -- He got a couple of stints to start the game. I wonder if the losing keeps up if that changes soon or not. Too hard to guess what Luke does with Randle these days. Compare the stat lines between Bogut and Randle tonight. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot and had 3 boards, 1 assist and 2 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: He blocked a layup.

Randle -- -- “Anytime it’s a loss, I’m pissed off,” he said. Seems like he’s been pissed off for several years now. A lot of losing during that time. Another 7-minute first half. And, again, we run him with these tough lineups with Ennis, Caruso and Brewer. Tonight, however, we had to make up for Lonzo’s 30+ minutes a game, so he’d have to try his best to help carry those lineups. He’d finish with just 19 minutes and scored 16 to go with 7 boards. Luke, you’ve got to play him more. With Lonzo out, you’d think you could even use Julius’s ball handling and playmaking right now. We are trying to have Bogut playmake out of the high post with the passing, but the opportunities aren’t consistently there. Randle also gets us out on the break more. Again, without Lonzo on the floor pushing the tempo, we need more of Randle doing that, not less. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 7-10 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards (4 offensive), 2 assists, 2 turnover and 4 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He missed a jumphook bank. He grabbed a missed layup and scored. He dunked off the feed from Caruso out of the weave. He was rejected trying to power up. Second Half: He attacked the paint and drew FTs, he made both. He was called for a charge on iso. He dunked off the two-man sequence with Hart. He saved a loose ball to JC in front of the rim for the score. He grabbed a rebound, pushed it out with speed and dunked. He grabbed a board, missed, but we regained possession. He backed his man down and hit the turnaround. He found Brewer cutting baseline for a reverse. He scored a layup off the drive and dish in transition from Ennis. He went coast to coast for a dunk.

Nance -- -- He sank a couple of midrange jumpers for his first half scores. Good seeing that shot fall, but especially tonight when we needed everyone to contribute. He was a +8 in the first half, running at both PF and C. We set him up for a couple of dunks in the second half. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-5 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He swiped a pass and ignited the break. He sank a 16-footer off the kickout. He sank a corner jumper on the kickout from Kuzma. He drew a charge on KAT in the post. Second Half: He missed a floater. He drew FTs on a putback attempt, he made one. He dunked off the interior feed from JC. He dunked off the lob from Kuzma on the break. XXX

Brewer -- -- Just some very poor play from him tonight. In the first half, he threw a pass away on the break trying to lob to Nance and got it stolen. As Luke has mentioned, those are the highlight passes the team needs less of and more of the simple passes to take the score. To start the third quarter he turned the ball over and had a couple other miscues that allowed the TWolves to put together a run. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 9 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He missed a layup but Randle cleaned it up. He missed a heave from halfcourt. He swiped a pass, then threw the lob away on the break, uggh. He reached and gave up a layup. Second Half: He reversed off the feed from Randle in the paint. He attacked, spun and was blocked. He coughed it up for a dunk the other way. He missed a three on a kickout.

Caruso -- -- Sheesh. Felt bad for him with how much TNT focused on him looking like Ernie. Merry Christmas, Alex. He’s looking a little more comfortable by the game. We’re going to need him to step up with Lonzo out…but how many inexperienced NBAers can we really lean on this season? Tough to win games doing that. “I’m just going to try to improve, keep pushing,” Caruso said. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 1 assist, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 10 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He got penetration off the weave and hit Randle for the dunk. He escaped the D with a behind-the-back dribble and hit the baseline floater. He missed a short one in the paint. He pressured the passing lane and forced a turnover. Second Half: He coughed it up for a layup the other way.

Ennis -- -- He stepped up a little with Lonzo out. He was attacking the paint with some consistency in this game and usually good things happened. He had probably the highlight play of the game with a spin move in transition, then another spin on the pass off to Julius for the score. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-5 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists and 1 foul in 15 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He attacked off a screen on the sideline and scored a layup. He scored a layup in transition off the Nance steal. He attacked, drew the D and hit the Nance for the jumper. Second Half: He attacked the paint off the screen and drew FTs on a reverse, he made one. He missed a drive. He got a head of speed into the paint off the Randle screen and scored the layup. He spun on the break and dished to Randle for the layup. He couldn’t finish a drive.

Walton -- -- We went with Bogut, Kuzma, Hart, KCP and JC to start. No Lonzo, Ingram or Lopez and with Nance out and Kuzma in, we’ve basically got KCP as the lone steady starter in this bunch. Tough situation for Luke and the team… Lakers down 6 when Randle came in with under 3 minutes left… Brewer and Ennis in for JC and Hart… The Lakers trailed 29-20 after the first… He started Randle, Nance, Brewer, Caruso, Ennis… Down 10, he sat Randle for Kuzma and brought in Hart and JC to go with Nance and Caruso… KCP in for Caruso… They started getting stops and took the lead in the final minute. Kuzma and JC providing some offense… The Lakers trailed 53-52 at the half. They shot 5-17 from three (just 3-5 from the line)… Timeout after giving up a breakaway dunk (looked like Hart was fouled with no call on that play). Luke was once again ticked at the refs… Turnovers causing the Lakers problems… Lakers with Randle, Kuzma, Hart, KCP and Ennis down 4… Caruso in for KCP… The Lakers trailed 83-80 heading into the fourth… He went with Randle, Nance, Brewer, Caruso, Ennis… An 11-0 run by the Wolves the Lakers called a timeout… He sat Randle after 4 minutes for Kuzma and brought back in JC for Caruso…. Randle back in for Nance late in the quarter… Lakers gave up 38 points in the fourth quarter…

It was as bad as you can imagine. Complaints about too much 3pt shooting every minute.. Chuck saying Ingram is a better shooter than Kuzma. Oh and after the game, Worthy said Kuzma's points weren't very impactful. Please know that's false though. He was so efficient.

Thanks for the write up DB. Merry christmas! Thank you for LG. Lol

I cannot defend Luke with my friends or family any longer. His rotations are awful. He puts combinations in the game that anyone with even a modicum of basketball knowledge know cannot work. It's truly painful to watch.

And how in the HELL is Randle only getting 19 minutes????? He had 16 points and 7 rebounds in 19 minutes!!! WTF!!!!!

I honestly want Luke to succeed. But if Magic and Palinka don't sit this young coach down and explain to him the errors of his ways and soon ... I just do not see how he can continue. He is just a terrible coach.

Merry Christmas DB and Laker fans! I'm surprised this game was remotely close with Ball, Ingram, Lopez all out, particularly considering Randle still only got 19 minutes.

I'm glad I missed the TNT telecast.

Thanks DB for an excellent recap.

Yeah that commentating was so awful. I mean stupid basketball analysis and random rants on 3 pointers/analytics are to be expected, but the comments about Caruso's hair/looks were downright mean-spirited. But that's what they've always been, just a group of (bleep) that gets away with it for some reason.

Thanks DB

Don't understand why Luke won't play his best players together. Randle can do so much more and it seems like Luke is holding Randle back and the team back. Don't know what is going on but whatever it is it is hurting the team.

Is Randle mad? He ought to be and so should his teammates. All he does is play hard, play defense, score and rebound which this team needs badly.

Shaq called us a D-league team man, Chuck then drop the ‘not even Gatorade an save these guys’ then we didn’t win to shut them up...

Thanks DB! Decided to watch it in the 4th qtr when it was still close. Then, of course, we get blown out from that point. Announcers were insufferable. Barkley made a huge sarcastic point that Kuzma was THE best rookie on the team. May be true but he turned it into a big diss on Zo. Mean spirited is right.

Considering the Lakers were down 3 Starters, which severely weakened their Bench, I think they did about as good as expected...

I always enjoy your write-ups, DB, but especially in this one, as I found myself fast-forwarding most of the game. I just couldn't stand listening to all those idiots doing everything but calling the game. And yeah, I did hear someone (Barkley?) opining that Ingram is a better outside shooter than Kuzma. That opinion alone should bar someone from doing any further Laker commentary, because that's just downright ignorant. Look a field goal percentages, 3-point percentages, etc., and it's Kuzma by a fairly wide margin.

Anyway, great job as usual. You're awesome!

Every year that TNT crew gets worse and worse. The NFL GameDay Prime team with Ladanian Tomlinson and Deion and Chris Rose. They throw a couple light hearted jabs here and there, but they also talk Football and show A LOT of love to other teams and players.
