Losses Piling Up… The Lakers can’t control the injuries, but they can control the weird rotations and the missed freethrows. Both continue to conspire against them.

Despite Memphis giving up 22 offensive boards and forcing just 11 Laker turnovers, the Grizzlies showed how they can win a game by hitting freethrows. They would go 34-39 from the line (87 percent) compared to the Lakers 21-33 (63.6 percent).

It wasn’t the prettiest of games. Both teams were stuck in the mud out of the gates, the Lakers scoring just 3 points in the first 5 minutes. The Grizzlies were imposing their pace on the Lakers, but the Lakers would push back some in the third.

When they couldn’t get stops, they couldn’t get the pace in their favor. They got beat in the first few minutes of the fourth and were chasing the Grizzlies the rest of the quarter. Those minutes with their backup PGs to start the second and fourth quarters were a struggle (-15 in 8 minutes).

The Grizzlies built a double digit lead early in the fourth and didn’t give it up, taking the 109-99 win.

“No one here is going to feel sorry for us,” Luke said. “We got to keep working and grind this thing out as a group. That’s the only way to get out of this slump we’re in.”

Kuzma -- -- Any kind of game from Kuzma and the Lakers probably take this one. He struggled with the perimeter shot in the first half, going 3-12 for just 7 points (1-5 from three). He was short on most of his threes. That continued in the second half. Front rim, front rim, front rim. He’d finish 1-11 from three. Normally, he avoids the three ball if it’s not dropping and attacks, gets to the line, does the garbage work for scores. This outing ruined his three shooting percentage. He had been shooting over 50 percent in the last several games. Minutes might be catching up with him. Luke would go super small late in the game with Kuzma at the C spot. Would have rather seen us go big at times versus super small like we did. Luke used this an opportunity to remind him of the other things he can do and why he harps on that so much (passing, defense, etc.). “It wasn’t falling tonight,” Kuzma said. He mentioned the team would have had a lot more assists if he would have hit his shots. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-24 shooting (1-11 from three) to go with 8 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: Not close on a lefty runner. He missed a wing three on a swing pass. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He scooped up the loose ball, pushed it out and scored a layup. Short on a three straight away. He attacked, spun and missed. He sank a wide open sideline three on the kickout. He biffed a lefty layup in transition a few seconds later. Larry found him trailing the break for an uncontested layup next time down. He missed a wing three, way short. Second Half: He was blocked out of bounds on a drive. He missed a wing three, short. He was blocked in the paint out of bounds. Short again on a sideline three on a kickout. He airballed a wing three, way short. He missed a three, hitting back rim at least on this one. He grabbed an offensive board, stepped through at the FT line and hit the leaner. He was blocked out of bounds on a leak out. He was called for a charge on a drive right. He missed another wing three, short. He couldn’t finish a putback. He missed a three out of a timeout, short again. He missed a pull-up jumper.

Ingram -- -- The Lakers were able to get another ball handler back in the starting lineup with the return of Ingram. He would run the point quite a bit tonight. He had 11 points and 2 assists in the first half, his penetration collapsing the D or drawing fouls with some consistency. Unfortunately, he was missing FTs with consistency, too. He’d go 5-11 from the line. That hurts. The driving continues to be impressive. His footwork to set up his finishes and his strength are both very much improved from last year this time. Keep putting that work in. Defensively, some of his weakside reads were way late and we gave up easy scores. It got better as the game went along, but the damage was already done by then. He had 5 turnovers tonight, some sloppy passing sequences. His best passes were a nice feed to KCP on the break as Ingram pushed out and a lob to Nance off a set backscreen play out of a timeout. He’d pick up a tech in this one with some frustration late in the game on a non-call he wanted. The Stats: He scored 23 points on 9-20 shooting (5-11 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 5 turnovers and 3 fouls in 44 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He lost sight of the ball and we gave up FTs after a backdoor cut beat him. He swished a fade in the paint creating against the shotclock on the other end for the Lakers first score. He threw a pass away, turnover. He missed a drive around a big. He blew past his man at the elbow to earn FTs, he made one. Ball hogging attacking right into a crowd (Randle wide open) and he was easily tied up. Good first step past his man and he scored the layup (should have been an And-1). He attacked right, took contact, two steps and scored the And-1 layup (good job powering through that), he made the FT. He changed ends with speed, attacked, more hard contact and he drew FTs, he made one. He attacked the pressure on the perimeter and drew FTs, he missed both. He attacked and kicked to Kuzma wide open for the three. He lobbed to Nance out of a timeout for the dunk. He took a long outlet from Kuzma off a made FT and scored a layup with 2 seconds left. Second Half: He attacked off the weave and drew FTs, he made just one again. He sealed his man in the paint, took the pass and missed a layup, but Bogut dunked it in. He attacked the paint, took contact with no call and missed. Big hop into his jumper at the elbow off the dribble and he swished (more of that, please). He snaked off the screen and scored a layup around Gasol. He threw a kickout away after breaking a double team. He got tapped on a pull-up jumper. He rejected the screen, attacked, missed but Larry cleaned up the dribble penetration. He probed the paint, put on the brakes, spun and hit the turnaround (hard to defend that). He pushed it up the sideline and hit KCP on the other side of the court for the layup. He missed a pull-up jumper. He attacked, spun and was slapped for FTs, he made one. He was blocked on a dunk attempt. He posted up and hit the turnaround baseline jumper. Wild hook pass in the lane, right out of bounds (surprising lack of feel on that one, not close to Randle). He missed a pull-up jumper. He iso’d on Gasol and scored a lefty layup. He missed a face-up baseline jumper. He tried to bully his way to the rim and was blocked, then picked up a tech.

Clarkson -- -- Another slow start in this one, missing everything he took in his first stint and the Lakers came out of the gates stone cold, partly as a result. He had a meltdown at the end of the first half when he didn’t get a foul call with 4.3 seconds left. He took a frustration foul in the backcourt and then a tech to give the Grizzlies three freebies. His drives tonight early on were really out of control at times. He forgot to play with that methodical pace, where he gets a man on his hip, keeps him there, then uses the roll man well to get deep in the paint under control. When he’s constantly trying to beat teams with speed, he gets himself into trouble with no easy passing lanes. He had one nice play in the second half where he finally put his man in jail, kept him there and then slowly made the D choose how they wanted to be beat (an easy pass to Nance for the dunk). That’s how he needs to play. The three ball was looking good as he sank 5 of them. That was really the only part of his game that was working tonight. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 7-17 shooting (6-9 from three, 3-5 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 38 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He missed a baseline fade. He curled into the paint and missed. We got it back to him under the hoop and he airballed the finish (he wanted the foul). He missed a wing three, didn’t look set even though he had time. He sank a corner three on a kickout. Horrible possession, pounding the dribble, then passing to a player just as the shotclock expired. He got caught in the air on a drive and threw it right to a Grizzly. Wild lefty drive and he missed. He swished an open three on a kickout from Hart. He swished the sideline three. He missed a three straight away. He missed a pull-up jumper getting hit on the arm, took a hard frustration foul and then picked up a tech all with 4.3 seconds left, not smart. Second Half: He was fouled on a sideline three in transition, he made two FTs. Out of control, he traveled in the paint on the drive. He swished a step-back three off the high screen. He got a man on his hip, kept him there, drew the D and hit Larry for the dunk. He attacked right and drew FTs at the rim, he made one. He missed a step-back corner three at the end of the third. He bricked a pull-up three in transition. He ball-faked, attacked the paint and scored the layup. He sank a three going left. He tipped in a miss.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He managed to get to the line multiple times in the first half and manufacture some points there. Much better shot selection, even if he struggled a little from the perimeter. Still, he’d finish with 16 points on 10 shoots. I’ll take that. A bit sleepy on D at times. Don’t want that. He did have a steal for a dunk, but other than that, pretty forgettable night on that end. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 4-10 shooting (1-4 from three, 7-7 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal and 2 foul sin 36 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He drew FTs on a drive, he made both. He was fouled on a three out of a timeout, he made all three FTs. He drew FTs on an attack off a Nance save, he made both. He missed a baseline jumper in transition. He missed a pull-up elbow jumper next time down. Second Half: He missed a transition three. He sank a midrange jumper off the offensive board. He jumped a passing lane, swiped the ball and took it for the dunk. He bricked a three. He scored the layup running the opposite lane as Ingram who found him on the break. He sank a sideline three. He missed a wing three. He missed a putback.

Bogut -- -- Well, at least he had some more stats in minutes, showing some signs of life and activity. He hit the boards for 9 rebounds (5 offensive) in his 13 minutes. He was still foul prone and those moving screens are always work at least one turnover a game for us it seems. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 9 boards (5 offensive), 1 assist, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: Illegal screen, turnover. Second Half: Putback jam off the missed Ingram layup. He pulled out an offensive board and hit Hart cutting for the layup.

Randle -- -- The story beneath the story. Once again, it’s Julius Randle. He got one stint in the first quarter, then sat until 3 minutes into the fourth. There might have been an hour and half between stints. Luke then sat him a few minutes after his stint in the fourth. You put him on ice and expect what, exactly? We don’t have the luxury for teaching lessons or not playing our best players right now. We’re free falling and losing games we should win. Randle with 11 minutes? Just doesn’t make sense. “I don’t know what to make of it,” Worthy said afterward. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-5 shooting (2-6 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 11 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He airballed a baseline jumper on an inbounds. He hit a tough one-hander in the paint over Gasol on the screen-roll. He blew past two defenders for a layup to his left. He missed a layup on his drive right, chased down the miss, attacked again this time to his left and drew FTs, he missed both after all that. He posted up a smaller man and drew FTs, he made one. He missed a full-court drive but we got it back. Second Half: He fumbled away a pass that hit him in the hands. He was fouled on a switch on the pick and roll for FTs, he made one.

Nance -- -- He started the second quarter at the C spot and Luke played him the whole quarter. So last C in, but the most minutes. Bogut, Randle and Nance didn’t see time together on the floor in the first half. In the second half, he was the first big off the bench, but when things went south with him at the C spot, we sat him and he didn’t return. No thoughts of going big and getting Nance back to the PF for minutes. Good effort from Nance even if we didn’t play him at his best position. A lot of garbage work from him and a nice lob dunk off a backscreen. Larry made both of his FTs and commented on the Lakers poor shooting from the line: “The work is being put in and we’ll figure it out,” he said. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-7 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 9 boards (5 offensive), 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He battled for an offensive board and flipped in a tough putback, wanting the foul. He hustled for a loose ball, got it and dunked. He swiped the ball in the paint, pushed it out and bounced to Kuzma for the layup. He threw down a lob dunk from Ingram. He missed a 19-footer. Second Half: He dunked on the drive and dish from JC. He was fouled off ball for FTs, he made both. He crashed the glass after Ingram rejected the screen and he cleaned up the miss (right after Spectrum featured his hustle plays, too). He missed a putback jumphook.

Hart -- -- A lot of minutes for the rookie, leading the bench with 30. Again, steady effort from him. He was also getting a little frustrated with the refs, but didn’t let it boil over. Offensively, he made a three, made a couple layups and FTs. If he sees just one guy in front of him, he’s attacking that with confidence. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-5 shooting (1-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards (4 offensive), 2 assists and 4 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: Short on a three, he got it back, attacked and was stripped out of bounds. He kicked out to JC for three. Quick counter attack after a made basket and he muscled in the layup. Second Half: He cut off the Bogut rebound, took the pass and scored the layup around the D. He sank a three on a kickout. He attacked left and drew FTs, he made both. He battled in a crowd for an offensive board and it led to an Ingram score.

Brewer -- -- We ran him at PF in the first half. You’ve got Nance sitting on the bench during part of this stretch. When we brought Nance in, it was for Randle. Just don’t understand this as Brewer doesn’t space the floor. Brewer should not be Kuzma’s backup at the PF spot. Not with our PF depth. With Lopez out, you’d think Randle/Nance would get more minutes, not less. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot and had 1 board in 7 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He did not play in the second half.

Caruso -- -- He started the fourth quarter as Ennis got the run in the first half. Brief stint where we had no chemistry. Rather have him in the first half, when there is less pressure on and then Ennis in the second half if that doesn’t work out. We also had him out there with Randle who had been sitting forever, so this was a cold lineup that got beat down. They were a -9 when Caruso was out there in those 4 minutes. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting and had 1 foul in 4 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Way short on a pull-up wing jumper.

Ennis -- -- The 8 minutes our backup points combined for we were a -15. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 4 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He tried to thread a pass through traffic getting caught in the air, turnover. He kicked to JC in the corner for three. He missed a three on a kickout. Not close on a three on a kickout, just beating the shotclock. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Walton -- -- Lakers offense stone cold to start the game. Timing on everything looked off. They had just 3 points after 5 minutes and trailed by 6… Randle in for Bogut at that point… Luke called timeout at the 6-minute mark down 12-4. Abysmal offense… Down 5 when Hart came in for JC… They trailed 14-13 when the Grizzlies called a timeout with under 4 minutes left… Brewer in for Kuzma. So Randle, Ingram, Brewer, Hart, KCP lineup down 3… Now Ennis in for Ingram. Sheesh. Brewer at PF, no Nance. Brewer ain’t spacing the floor at PF any better than Nance… Down 3 when JC returned for KCP… The Lakers trailed 24-18 after the first quarter… He started Nance, Brewer, Hart, JC and Ennis. So here’s where we fall back deep, right? Sure enough... He brought back in Ingram with the Lakers down 10. Ennis out… Kuzma in for Brewer, Lakers down 5. Time to roll with this lineup... They cut it to 1 when the timeout came… Out of that we went with Nance, Kuzma, Hart, KCP, Ingram lineup (Ingram the PG)… JC in for Hart… The Lakers trailed 54-47… Kuzma continued to miss from three to start the second half. Hart in for Kuzma, Lakers down 6… Bogut out for Nance with 4:27 in the third. No Randle this time… They tied it up when the next timeout came… An 11-0 Laker run to take a 4-point lead… They were tied 76-76 heading into the fourth… He started a Nance, Kuzma, Ingram, JC, Caruso lineup… Out of a timeout and the Lakers throw the ball away… Randle in, Lakers down 6 after 3 minutes… JC in for Caruso… He took a timeout down 9 midway through the quarter… Randle out after a brief stint, going with Kuzma at C against Gasol… Desperate measures down by double digits late… Lakers had just 11 turnovers tonight and 22 offensive boards. That’s a lot of possessions they should have capitalized on, but didn’t… The Grizzlies made 34-49 from the line… The Lakers had a season-low 14 assists…

Mavs beat pacers
Kings beat Cavs

This is unacceptable tbh, doesn’t matter who is injured and out.

More likely the Lakers are working hard on a trade for Randle and are moving on with the other players. ?????

The only other thing I can think is that Luke believes Randle is not doing good in the locker room and perhaps spreading dissent.

Past that, it seems like Luke is a bit wonky himself.

DB Quote on Randle: " We don’t have the luxury for teaching lessons or not playing our best players right now. We’re free falling and losing games we should win".

Luke exactly what lesson are you trying to teach Julius? He plays harder than anyone else, he is unselfish in his play, he plays great defense I just don''t get it.

You are hurting the team by not playing your best players and after Kuzma you most consistent player is Randle.

I love ya Luke but you have your head up your butt on this one.

I saw a part of the game. It's just so much less interesting without Ball. Glad Ingram's back because the Christmas game without he & Ball was torturous for me to watch.

"The story beneath the story. Once again, it’s Julius Randle. He got one stint in the first quarter, then sat until 3 minutes into the fourth"

I'm glad I didn't see most of the game because that would have really disturbed me, as I'm sure it's disturbing Julius. I dislike how Luke is handling this young bull. Not playing Julius, and Julius not being injured, strikes me as something personal and punitive.

If there was no team violation, or any conduct detrimental to the team type of stuff, then it, for me, strikes me as both punitive, personal, and childish.

Thanks DB.

Thanks DB for the write-up on what for me was an unwatchable game in an unwatchable stretch with Ball out. I'm surprised how bad Ennis has played this year, and I'm very surprised how Luke is handling rotations. Hope Ball is feeling good and cleared to play real soon.

Did any reporter ask Luke about his usage of Randle?

Was it a matchup issue with Randle at the 5?

With Kuzma having a rare off-shooting night while playing at the 5, would having Randle playing with Kuzma be beneficial since the option was Ingram.

Luke is not the genius coach as many had proclaimed while he was coaching the Warriors nor is he the worst that many have shared in this and other threads. Luke is a brilliant young coach trying to find consistency with mainly rookies who are notoriously consistently inconsistent.

The influence off Ball is noted when he is not playing

Unfortunately you are correct. What type of mindset has Luke instilled in this team? It should’ve came forth after the Lakers had these injuries - on the offensive side all I see is no assists, isos and jack it from the 3 pt line mentality. On the defensive side - nada.

He needs zo back to save his job

Luke is trying to lose games. I have no other explanation.
I do, Luke is in over his head.

Do understand and appreciate the present "Doom and Gloom" mentality on Luke.

When young players/rookies are tired and/or not used to playing (Ennis/Caruso) with Ball and Lopez out - ISOs and 3pt shots usually is what happens and there is only so much that Luke can do.

With Kuzma having a bad shooting night and Nance still doesn't have an effective offensive game with no Ball, passes will generally remain on the outside unless Ingram is driving the paint.

Randle is not an offensive threat against the Grizzs (with Gaol playing 32 minutes) or most other teams with legitimate bigs unless the pace is much greater that is not happening without Lonzo.

With Bogut and Nance getting 9 rebounds each while they were on the court (13 and 19 minutes) - Kuzma, Ingram, Hart, KCP and JC were the players that Luke depended on because they were playing well (better than the others). If having three guards and two small forwards doesn't produce much passing - what is Luke supposed to do. Agree that Randle should play more, but whose minutes would you have taken away

we are on the verge of the worse record.

This is pathetic.

Walton needs to fix this and earn his paid.

I predicted 20 wins and 62 losses, but they might not even get to 15 wins.

The awfulness continues.

I thought that they would win 30 but think that the analytics prediction of 28 might happen.
