The Airing of Grievances… It’s a Festivus tradition.

The Lakers skipped practice on Thursday and aired their many grievances in a team meeting. One change on the heels of that meeting is Julius Randle finally back in the starting lineup. Luke also went to Ingram as the PG, sitting Clarkson for Hart.

The lack of any kind of PG skills was evident from the start. The offense stagnated badly out of the gates as the Lakers fell behind 22-5 after 5 minutes. No offense…but 22 points in 5 minutes hurts.

They needed to force turnovers and get out in transition for easier scores before the defense could get set. The Lakers had just 1 steal, forcing only 2 Clipper turnovers in the first half. Just a sign of a lot of inactivity on that end of the floor.

“I just don’t think we were ready for whatever reason to engage in the fight,” Luke said of the first half.

Despite forcing more turnovers in the second half, the defense was still too soft to mount a comeback. The early lead the Clippers built in the in the first quarter was never threatened and the Lakers went quietly into the night. Lou Williams and Blake Griffin combined for 24-27 from the freethrow line, but six Clippers scored in double digits.

“We have to get back to taking pride in being a defensive team first,” Luke said after the 121-106 loss.

Randle -- -- One of the outcomes of the team meeting appears to be Randle starting. For how long, who knows? We know Luke will bring Lopez back at some point and start him because he left the lineup with an injury. “We’ve been losing games and Julius has been great for us this whole season so we wanted to give him a chance in there,” Luke said. It’s too bad Lonzo wasn’t in the starting lineup as I’ve wanted the Randle, Kuzma, Ingram, Ball unit to get as much playing time as possible together. This was the eleventh new lineup this season. They struggled with it out of the gates and fell behind quickly. Randle seemed to be one of the few to scratch consistently in the first half. He led the team with 13 points in the half. Some troubles finishing around Jordan in the paint, which is probably how Randle got a lot of those 5 offensive rebounds. When he had speed going, Jordan couldn’t stay with him. Good to see more minutes tonight. Luke gave him some praise afterward for his game tonight. I’d like to see more Nance/Randle instead of finding minutes for Ingram or Brewer at PF like we do. Julius mentioned controlling what he can control like he has all season. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 8-16 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: He couldn’t get to the poorly thrown lob on the break. He attacked, spun, was blocked, got it back, was blocked, swiped it right back and drew FTs, he made one. He missed a jumphook over Jordan. He scored a layup on the drive and dish from Ingram. Quick attack from the elbow and he scored a layup. He scooped up a loose ball and scored a layup. He grabbed a rebound, pushed it up, slowed down, attacked and scored the layup. Quick attack on the catch at the three line and he scored a layup. He bumped Jordan in the paint and hit he fade. He had 13 points on 6-10 shooting and 4 boards. Second Half: He dunked in transition off the Hart/Ingram pushout. He pounced on a switch and knocked the ball loose. He couldn’t finish over Jordan, he got it back, attacked and was blocked out of bounds. Too hot on a pass to Kuzma, turnover. Great rebound, pushout and he threw a pass over the D right to Ingram for the layup. He dunked on the drive and dish from Kuzma. He missed a layup on the break, but we tipped it in. He was blocked from behind trying to power up, got it back and drew FTs, he made one.

Kuzma -- -- He was questionable to play in this one after getting banged up in the last game. Offensively, he still struggled with the three, shooting just 1-7. Rough last couple games. He needs to reel in the harder looks when he’s struggling. He had been doing a good job of that all season until recently. Tough matchup against Griffin, who is much stronger. The Lakers were really undersized out there and needed as much team rebounding as possible. They didn’t get a lot of help there. Luke mentioned his starting Kuzma when Lopez was out was due to the floor spacing. Lopez spaces the floor so he uses Nance out there with him. I’d like to see him get a little more rest, but Luke’s playing him big minutes. Those might be catching up with him a little right now. “They came out ready to play and punched us in the face,” Kuzma said. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 6-14 shooting (1-7 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: Short on a his first three, but was a step behind the line. He missed a three on a kickout. He grabbed a long rebound, Euro-stepped around the D on the drive and scored the And-1 floater, he missed the FT short. He attacked from the wing and fed Brewer cutting for the layup. He was blocked on a jumphook. He attacked Griffin, hung and scored the layup over him. He pushed it up and hit the 17-footer in early offense. He grabbed a missed dunk on one end, pushed it out and dunked on the other. He missed a long three on iso at the end of the half. He took a flagrant on Griffin in transition D on the other end. Second Half: He sank a pull-up three in transition. He missed a three, not getting squared up well. Wild drive and he was blocked. He attacked off the screen and hit Randle for the dunk. He missed a step-back three in transition, not a great shot (at the very least, set up behind the three line when the ball comes). He reversed off the JC drive and dish. He missed a three, short. He attacked and set up Randle for FTs.

Ingram -- -- With JC sitting, that put more emphasis on Ingram’s ball handling and playmaking for the starting unit. The ball just dies with him and the offense stagnates badly. The team floundered badly out of the gates. Ingram was 0-7 in the first half. He got it going in the second half, getting into his midrange game. Defensively, he was really a non-factor. We needed more team rebounding. He’s got length. Yet, he finished with just 1 board. He’s got to do better than that. Maybe putting the ball in hands so much is tiring his effort out there. I don’t know. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 8-20 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a -18. The Action: He swatted his man on D. Way short on a pull-up jumper. His perimeter pass was picked off. He missed an open three on a kickout. He attacked and fed Randle for the layup. He blew past his man, but wasn’t close on the layup. He missed a wing jumper after ball stopping. He was stripped on the break. He missed a wing three, wide open. He missed an elbow turnaround. Second Half: He sank a 17-footer off a handoff to start the half. Nice speed in transition, taking a pass and no-looking to Randle for the dunk. He didn’t hit rim on a jumper. He missed the elbow jumper off the screen. He hit a 20-footer on iso. Good job running the floor and Randle found him over the top of the D for the layup. Quick pushout after a score, he froze the D on the hesitation and dunked. He missed a layup around the D in transition. Left alone under the hoop, we found him for a dunk. Quick counter attack off a made basket and he drew FTs, he made both. He set up Nance for FTs. Dumb perimeter foul on Lou 40 feet from the hoop for FTs. He swished a 17-footer off a screen. He worked off the screen and swished the elbow pull-up. He missed a pull-up behind a screen. No box out and he gave up a dunk. He attacked and sank a step-back fade (closest we’ve seen him to a Dirk fade, which would be a deadly shot for him to master). He missed an elbow jumper.

Hart -- -- Wish we were able to run Lonzo in this one with the rest of these starters. To start the game there was a noticeable vacuum with the offensive flow. It just wasn’t there. Not Hart’s fault, but we missed that. On a related note, as good as Hart is at D, it’s really been noticeable how much we miss Lonzo on that end of the floor, as well, since he’s been out. That’s a good sign for the future when the team improves its talent. Luke even mentioned how well Lonzo has played on that end of the floor after this one as part of our issues. “He’s pretty darn good on the defensive end. He rebounds, he anticipates, he gets steals, he gets deflections for us,” he said. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: He airballed a wing three. He bit on a fake and fouled Lou on the three. He missed a pull-up from the top of the key. He scored a layup filling the lane on the break. Second Half: Backcourt pressure and he forced a turnover. He fought over the screen and drew the moving screen call. He couldn’t finish a layup attempt.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He got smoked by Lou last time we played. We started to see the Lakers trap with KCP to get the ball out of Lou’s hands when they matched up. Offensively, he might have made Shaqtin’ a Fool for an attempt to throw a pass to himself off the backboard and instead throwing it over the board. Just out of control. Nice to see Luke sit him after that one. Shot selection seems to have improved, but still a few head scratchers. He’ll be out as we hit the road, so I assume JC will be back in with the starters as Lonzo isn’t going to play. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 6-11 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: Off the mark on a lob to Randle on the break. He grabbed an airball and scored the layup. He cut off ball, took the pass down the lane and scored the layup. He cut under the hoop, missed the easy layup, then the putback, then finally tipped that in. He bricked badly on a pull-up in transition. Perimeter foul on Lou for FTs. He ran into a player on the perimeter to give up more FTs. Second Half: He was fouled filling the lane on the break, he made both. He missed a three in transition, shouldn’t have settled on that when it looked like we could get a layup. He bricked a three coming off the screen. He tried to throw a pass off the board to himself and threw it over the top of the board, horrible. He sank a pull-up 15-footer. Another one from the same spot next time down. He scored a layup on the break.

Clarkson -- -- Without him in the starting lineup for Lonzo, the offense stagnated badly. I’d probably put him back in the starting lineup and look for Caruso to run the offense for the bench. Not a lot of choice. He had 11 points on 5-9 shooting and 3 assists in the first half. Some very good two-man sequences in the seconds half. As a result, he led the team with 8 assists. I mentioned in the last game, that when he slows down and uses the passing lanes as a threat, he’s game is much better. He was able to get to the middle with some consistency this game, especially with Nance to set him up for scores again and again. Offensively, just a much better overall game. Very few instance of being out of control (a couple passing sequences where he forced it some). Defensively, pretty much a non-factor. His rotations were off and his switches onto bigger players were pretty much abused. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 9-16 shooting (2-5 from three) to go with 5 boards, 8 assists, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 35 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He fed KCP cutting under the hoop for an eventual layup (no assist for JC, though). He missed a short runner in transition. He missed an open three. He stepped out of bounds, turnover. He attacked quickly off the pass across the lane and scored the layup. He finished a lob off the horns set when Nance found him over the top of the D. He found Nance in the paint for a score next time down. He sank a wing three on a catch and shoot. Poor angle on D and he gave up a layup. He missed a forced three next time down. He missed a three behind a screen. He worked the two-man game with Randle and hit the floater. He tracked down a loose ball, pushed it out and scored a layup around the D. Second Half: He pulled up on the break and airballed the midrange jumper. Poor help D to give up an And-1 layup. He got middle and hit Nance for the layup. He missed a midrange layup. He scored a layup off the long feed from Caruso after a made hoop. He got middle again and hit Nance for the dunk. He got control of a loose ball in transition, attacked and scored a layup. He was swatted on a drive. He attacked and hit Kuzma for the reverse. A little too hot on an interior feed, turnover. He probed and hit KCP for a layup. He tipped in a missed layup. He sank a pull-up three behind a screen.

Nance -- -- “They hit us first. That kind of seems to be theme of this year,” he said. He said it doesn’t matter who was starting, it’s a consistent issue. Could just be a talent issue. Our starters are young and inexperienced, the consistent talent isn’t there right now. Good game from Nance offensively. We were able to set him up for scores off the two-man sequences. The best came when we would ball reverse into a quick pick and roll, where JC would get middle and Nance would roll for scores. Defensively, moving Nance to having the bulk of his minutes at the C spot has really been one of the defensive issues this team is facing. He’s much better at the PF. While we were scoring in the second half with his unit, we just couldn’t get stops. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-7 shooting (4-5 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He hit JC over the top of the D form the horns elbow position for a lob score. He battled for a pass under the hoop, won it and reversed. He was fouled on an inbounds with 0.4 left on the clock, he made one FT. He swiped a pass, pushed it out and bounced to Hart for the layup. Second Half: He scored an And-1 layup on the break, he made the FT. He gave up a putback to Jordan. Ingram wide open on a lob and Nance threw it away. He sank a face-up jumper when Jordan sagged off him. Caught in no-man’s land on a slip screen and he gave up a dunk. He wasn’t ready for a pass, turnover. He drew FTs on the Ingram drive, he made both. He tipped in a tough lob to start the fourth quarter. He scored a layup off the two-man game with JC. He rolled to the hoop, took the pass from JC, up faked, dribbled and slammed. He missed the open 15-footer. He stripped a man then pounced on the loose ball for a jumpball, which he won.

Brewer -- -- Some of the lineups he’s on are perimeter-challenged. We can’t get bogged down in the halfcourt because the paint will just be packed against smarter teams. Saw a bit of that tonight. Some good attacks in the first half. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-4 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He cut off Kuzma’s drive and scored the layup when Kuzma found him. Telegraphed bounce pass, turnover. He attacked the paint and dunked. He curled into the paint and missed a good look at a layup. He attacked off the three line and drew FTs, he made one. He faked backdoor and the pass went out of bounds. He missed a drive over Lou. Second Half: He pushed out the turnover and hit Nance in the middle for the And-1 layup.

Caruso -- -- He got burned on some pressure D at times. Offensively, we really didn’t put the ball in his hands when he was out there, so not a lot of action. Not sure if Ennis will be out in the next one. If so, we’ll need to lean on Caruso more with KCP also out. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three to go with 1 assist and 1 foul in 6 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Full court pressure to give up a dunk. Nice hit ahead to JC off a made hoop to score a layup on the other end. He missed a deep three on our final possession.

Bogut -- -- Pretty awful game at times. He had his usual turnover on a moving screen. He did a poor job matching up with his size on Jordan, allowing tip outs to reset the offense. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot and had 2 boards and 2 turnovers in 5 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: Brewer faked him into a turnover on a backdoor pass. He gave up a couple offensive boards. He was called for a moving screen. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Bryant -- -- In with 1:19 left with Zubac. Would have liked to see him in a little sooner than that. He missed a three on his only attempt. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three in 1 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He missed a rushed corner three.

Zubac -- -- In for the final minute for a brief sighting. Nothing to report, though. The Stats: No stats in 1 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Walton -- -- The Lakers quickly trailed 9-0 after just 1:38 of action. Luke called a timeout… After 5 minutes, they were down 22-5… JC in the game for Hart down 17… Down 13, he brought in Nance for Randle with over 3 minutes left… Brewer in for Ingram… The Lakers trailed 35-22 after the first quarter… He started the Bogut, Nance, Brewer, Hart, JC unit. Another one we haven’t seen and not a floor spacer at all… Lou picking apart the Lakers for FTs… Down 15, he went to Bogut, Randle, Ingram, KCP, JC… Bogut awful, so Kuzma came in with 7 minutes left… Offense looking better when it’s not in Ingram’s hands. Lakers also looking to push the pace more. Ball always keeps the tempo going for this team, but they are struggling to do it without him… The Lakers trailed 62-48 at the half. Just 1 steal in first half and only 2 Clipper turnovers. Lakers 1-10 from three… The Lakers scored the first couple of hoops and forced a timeout, down 10… Lakers starting to force turnovers… Down 13 when KCP and Hart sat for JC and Brewer with 5 minutes to go… Down 13, Nance in for Randle… Caruso in for Kuzma, so Ingram at PF… The Lakers trailed 91-76 heading into the fourth… He started a Nance, Brewer, Hart, JC, Caruso lineup… Really soft D continues… Nance, Kuzma, Ingram, KCP and JC now in with 8 minutes to go… Randle back in for Nance down 13… He emptied the bench in the final minute…

Thanks DB

Andrew Kamenetzky in post game [radio] show:

"The team is about ready to splinter" (not word for word, but he basically said this)

The other radio host(s) then went on about how this Lakers unit was tight-knit / really liked each other...was kind of an odd exchange; then again, I started to tune them out after they got into that.

Thanks DB.

I just can't watch any of this and rather wait for your take. I know as fans we get really heated in the game.thread (and there's plenty of reason to) but I can count on a few people on this board for valuable input.

Lonzo represents our future and hope. When he and Ingram went down, I stopped watching because I knew KCP would see it as an excuse to shoot all the time. I'm sick and tired of rentals. They're are not Lakers. I don't root for them on an individual level. they don't belong.

As for the rookie core, for better or worst, they are growing up and they represent the future we've been chasing for so many years now. So when they're not playing, I have very little interest to watch.

Tonight was brutal and maybe the tipping point of what I've felt has been a long time.coming. this team is no longer Luke's . Theyre playinfor themselves now

Thanks, DB. KCP has a real talent for making a pretty decent stat line look like hot garbage. I won't miss him next season.

is basically how I feel after watching this game. Felt a lot like the tanking game of years past. Of course, no pick in sight this season.

Thanks DB!

This team is young and not very talented but they used to battle to the end and at least go down swinging.

For some reason the team's defensive intensity has dropped down a notch. They doesn't seem to have that same fighting spirit in them the last couple of games.

That is what is great about the NBA, the next game is usually one or two days away.

The (very) young Lakers are slowly understanding what it means to be a highly paid athlete in the NBA, especially a member of a Lakers team with a fanatical fanbase that only want rings. When KCP/JC are the veterans to supposedly demonstrate how to get through the dog days of the season while playing the top teams in the league, there will be problems.

In the media, the following was stated:
But losing close, grueling games to elite teams and injuries have taken its toll on the young Lakers. Veteran Andrew Bogut also said players have been frustrated not only by injuries and constantly changing rotations but also the Lakers' plans to clear cap space to go after two superstar free agents next summer and the uncertainty that has created for players on the current roster.

For those that want changes, each change deserves a fair chance to see if it works or not. When Kuzma, who was so dependable in the past, and Ingram (who was more effective in the past when initialing the offense) are having problems - along with Ball being out - the results are not surprising.

Isn't it great to recognize the strategic value Ball brings to the team.

It should be noted that the 76ers, who arguably have more talent with Embiid and Simmons leading the way, are having similar issues these days.

Luke needs to find a way to lower the MPG for Kuzma and Ingram as it appears that they are getting worn out.

Hopefully in these off-days, key members of the team will get some needed rest and others (like Hart) can be more familiar of the offense and what he needs to do.

Maybe Luke should do a "Pop Move" and give some players rest. Understand Mychal Thompson saying that these kids are young, but the minutes they are playing seems to result in injuries that is disturbing the flow. It should be noted that they have been playing the elite teams of the NBA during this stretch and realistically would have problems winning just a few games with a full and rested roster playing well.

Re: Randle
He is a physically gifted player and an undersized Draymond Green-type center who has problems finishing against legitimate bigs. With players like Faried bringing much more energy than Randle having problems, where/when do you play him? If he is not playing with great pace, how great is his value and with his outside shot still not soliciting any type of concern - where and when will you play this physically gifted player? Would you give him a Max Contract, as a member of the Lakers for his next contract?

Bench Players
Will the current physical status of players such as Kuzma, Lopez, Ball and others with others playing major minutes (Kuzma - 37 minutes, Ingram - 37 minutes, Clarkson - 35 minutes, KCP - 34 minutes, Randle - 29 minutes) - making a CDRest situation might be in order that will result in players such as Bryant/Zubac/Caruso getting a chance to see where their growth is presently at plus it would give them some experience when they are playing selective teams.

DB,
I think they should have had an aluminum pole without tinsel at their team meeting because tinsel can be very distracting. That could have led to a better performance last night.
