A Double Overtime Sendoff to 2017… The Lakers ended 2017 on a double overtime thriller against the Houston Rockets. The most entertaining games of the year for this team have been against some of the best in the league.

Four of the Lakers starters in this game were once on the bench. Because of that, they did have experience together. We rolled out Randle, Kuzma, Ingram, Hart and Ennis, and they came to play.

Both teams had a blistering first quarter, but the Lakers led by 7 at the half, scoring a season-high 72 points led by Julius Randle with 19 at the half. He was destroying the Rockets interior. They would push out to as big as a 17-point lead in the third, before that was trimmed to 11 heading into the fourth.

The bench struggled to maintain that lead and the Rockets slowly chipped away.

Up three, the Lakers didn’t protect the three line and gave up a three with 17 seconds left. Tie game, Lakers call timeout. One play to win. Kuzma would miss a three on iso. Nance would later miss about a 70-foot lob attempt that was right there at the buzzer.

Harden would leave late in the game with an injury. In OT, Julius Randle would foul out with 29 points, 15 boards and 6 assists. Back and forth battle by both teams in both OTs. Brandon Ingram would send the game to double overtime with two clutch FTs with 0.8 left.

In the second overtime, Josh Hart would foul out, ending his night with 26 points. Huge game from him and Ennis, who would score 7 of his 20 points in that second overtime. The Rockets still had CP3 on the floor, while the Lakers are still in search of a closer. Paul would come up with key scores.

The Lakers had a chance to tie or win, but Kuzma was stripped on an inbounds as he rose up for a three. They’d leave 2017 behind with a 148-142 double overtime loss to the Rockets.

If you are thinking glass half full, 2017 was the year we drafted Ball, Kuzma, Hart and Bryant, while Ingram showed growth and Randle came into his own. Half empty and it’s the year we traded Russell for cap space, remained in the cellar and have no place for Randle as we go after free agents. Let’s hope 2018 is a great year for Laker fans and we start winning again.

Randle -- He was taking it to the Rockets. Unfortunately, he fouled out in overtime. Sometimes you forget this is really his third year, but a couple of those fouls he took late in this game on the offensive glass weren’t the smartest. When we have all the switching we do with our D and he’s got to go up against guys like Harden and CP3, you’ve got to save your fouls for those kinds of situations, which he was pretty strong at all things considered. The foul out may have cost us this one because he was dominating. He was the tip of the spear for the Lakers in the first half, scoring 19 points on 9-12 shooting (two of those misses he got back and scored on, so 9-10 possessions he scored) to go with 10 boards – the double-double in the first half. He’d finish with 29, 15 and 6 assists in just 33 minutes (good to see him get the minutes). He was attacking with speed, whether in transition, early offense or simply off the catch. The D was on its heels. He had a big score with a couple minutes left, a key kickout to Kuzma for a three on a drive and also a key stop. Love seeing opposing centers in both of these last two games bounce off him. “He did a great job of setting the tone with how fast he was playing. He was running into screens. He was rolling to the rim. When he was catching in that trail position, he was attacking, but attacking under control,” Luke said. Hope this is a game that both Randle and Luke can build off of. The Stats: He scored 29 points on 13-19 shooting (3-6 from the line) to go with 15 boards, 6 assists, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 6 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He sealed, took the post entry, spun and dunked. He fumbled a pass out of bounds, unforced error. He was blocked on a drive bringing it back to his left. He choked a layup, got it back and scored the putback. Illegal handoff, turnover. He grabbed a rebound, pushed out with speed and scored the layup. He attacked with speed in the halfcourt and got his man on his heels for a layup over him. Quick attack from the perimeter on the catch and he scored a layup with his offhand over his man. He scored another layup off the two-man game with BI as he overpowered his man. He attacked Nene with speed, missed a tough one, got it back, pumped him in the air and made the layup. He had Harden on him in the post and scored a layup around him with ease (good job running the floor to get that mismatch). He kept two Kuzma misses alive. Harden iso’d on him, attacked and Randle swatted the layup. He was called for a charge in transition. He sized up Anderson and blew past him for a layup. He got a switch, but noticed Anderson was now on Kuzma, so he directed the ball to Kuzma who scored a layup. He posted up Tucker and drew FTs, he made one. Second Half: Ennis set him up for a layup off the screen-roll. Quick first step around his man, but he was tapped on the layup. He posted up and hit Kuzma cross court for the three. He curled to the paint, took the inbounds off the cut and drew FTs, he made one. He spun on his man and powered in a layup. He hit Brewer cutting backdoor for a layup. Bad timing on a drive and he turned it over running into a crowd. He drew FTs on a tip attempt, he made one. He hit a jumphook over a smaller man on the switch. Great job running into a screen to set up Kuzma for a three. Quick attack off the catch from the wing, he spun and scored the layup. He attacked and kicked to Kuzma for the three with a minute left. He attacked and couldn’t finish. Overtime: He attacked, missed the drive and was called for a foul to foul out.

Kuzma -- -- He sank a couple threes in the first half on his way to 14 points on 4-9 shooting in the half. He’d sink 5-10 threes tonight, but wished he would have gotten one more. We gave him the ball for the final possession of regulation, he settled for a pretty deep three and missed it with 1.7 seconds left. Later in double OT, we tried to set him up off an inbounds for a three on the sideline, but he was stripped as he rose up and that was the ball game. His floater/jumphook game was off tonight. He missed a lot of those 8- to 10-footers. Defensively, he was in on a couple of blocks, which is nice to see. We could use a little more of that from him. Tough situation for him to try to get a stop on iso against CP3 with the game on the line. We ran him at center for those type of switches as it was better than Nance, but still difficult assignment for a rookie in that situation and we got burned on it. The Stats: He scored 23 points on 7-20 shooting (5-10 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 2 blocks, 1 turnovers and 4 fouls in 43 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: Great D on CP3 on iso to force a brick. He took a handoff, spun on the switching D to lose it and scored a layup. He sank a wing three behind a screen. He missed a floater trying to avoid a charge. He missed a layup on a drive he should have finished. He attacked the paint and was fouled on the throwdown attempt, he made both FTs. He missed a floater (probably should have hit Randle rolling). He attacked the paint, drew contact and threw it up to get FTs, he made both. Great bounce pass to Hart in transition for a layup. He missed another floater (again Randle rolling). He took an inbounds stepping back in the corner and quickly drained the three. He missed a jumphook in the paint. He attacked Anderson on a switch for a layup. Second Half: He attacked baseline and missed a floater. He pushed up the break, spun around one defender, drew the other and fed Hart for the dunk. He took the cross-court feed from Randle and quickly drained the three. He attacked and was blocked. He missed a deep three against the shotclock. He blocked a shot in the paint on help D. He blocked a big from behind at the rim. He was called for a charge trying to attack a crowd, hobbled after getting up off that. He drained a wing three off the Randle screen. He blocked Black’s dunk attempt. He missed a wing three out of a timeout. He swished a huge corner three in front of the Rockets bench. He missed a deep three with 1.7 seconds left, too deep on iso. Overtime: He missed a sideline three. Overtime 2: He attacked, spun, missed the jumphook and wanted the foul as he hit the floor. He was stripped rising up for a three on our final possession that mattered.

Ingram -- -- Bigtime clutch FTs by Ingram with 0.8 left to send it to double overtime. Great to see him go 6-6 from the line. Those were huge. Offensively, he let Ennis run the team as the point and didn’t put the ball in BI’s hands too much. We did a little more late in the game, but not having him dominate the ball, stop the offensive flow and let the D load up made a huge difference for the team tonight. We really need to be careful with his ball stopping as the offense screeches to a halt. Got to go back to that one game where he was coming off screens on the move when he got the ball. That’s how we want to play him. Loved seeing him get in on the boards a bit more late in the game when we needed some one-on-and-out possessions and had him at the PF spot. We need him fighting in there more with our smaller lineups, as mentioned last game. The Stats: The Action: He jab stepped and hit a wing jumper. He hit Randle on the rim run for a dunk. He no-looked a kickout out of bounds, careless pass with no pressure on. Soft perimeter D to give up a three. He got backdoored for a dunk. He attacked off the Randle screen and fed him rolling for the layup. He attacked off the high screens and scored a layup. His kickout was picked off, then he gave up a soft And-1 on the other end. He missed a tough turnaround over two fenders. He swished a baseline jumper on an inbounds. He gave up a layup getting flat footed on a give and go. Second Half: He was swatted on a drive left. He drew FTs on a non-shooting foul, he made both. He iso’d, spun and was easily picked by the help D. He tried to iso again and threw it away. He helped get a steal on the other end to get the stop. Overtime: He missed a layup but Larry cleaned it up. He attacked the spread floor for FTs, he made both. He attacked and was fouled with 0.8 left down 2, he made both clutch ones. Overtime 2: Some good rebounding sequences.

Hart -- -- So, one year rental KCP or Josh Hart starting, whose actually in our future? Politics unfortunately will come to play here, probably not in Luke’s control, either. He was superb tonight with the 26 points, including 4 threes. It seemed like he was coming up with big play after big play sometimes. Really looked more like the guy we saw in college. Hopefully, we see more and more of that as he gets his game to translate. Loved the one sequence in overtime where he dove in front of a man in the paint to create a steal on one end, then hustled down court for a foul on the offensive boards in transition. Love that. Now, for the parts where he got taken to school. He fouled Harden on several of those touch fouls on threes. Three of those in the first half. He battled for a long time in OT before picking up his sixth foul. That was one he put himself into a bad position on a bad decision in the backcourt and he sat for it. The other pain point was the missed FTs, where he went 4-8. Got to get those. “We know we should have had that one. We lost it. We had a lot of just dumb fouls. A couple of those attention to detail ones that hurts. Being young is not an excuse,” Hart said. Honorable mention for nearly the play of the game at the end of regulation on the 70-foot lob attempt. He threw a pass from the backcourt sideline right to the front of the rim to Nance. Unfortunately, Nance couldn’t hold it cleanly or that would have been the win. It was right there. The Stats: He scored 26 points on 9-13 shooting (4-7 from three, 4-8 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 6 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He gave up a 4-point play to Harden. He swished a three on the other end to try to get it back. Called for another reach on the Harden three. He scored a layup with Kuzma feeding him on the break. Back in and he fouled Harden again on a three (then Luke picked up a tech). Second Half: He sank a wing three to start the half. He dunked on the bustout off a Laker steal. He dunked on the break when Kuzma drew the D and fed him. He airballed a three, falling back on the kickout as he tried to beat the shotclock (no choice for him on that one). He swished a corner three out of a timeout on a screen-the-screener sequence. He attacked off the three line, took contact and finished the And-1, he missed the FT. He hit the front of the rim on a half-court three at the buzzer. He attacked off the three line and drew FTs, he made both. Overtime: He sank a wing three to start overtime. Nice job on CP3 to force a tough miss on iso. He attacked in transition, was hit and his layup was goaltended with 1:05, he missed the FT. He missed a three with 26 seconds left. Overtime 2: He dove for a steal in the paint on one end, hustled down court and was fouled on the offensive rebound putback in transition, sensational, he made one FT. He attacked in transition and was tripped for FTs, he made one. Way short on a turnaround in the paint, he then fouled in the backcourt and fouled out sending CP3 to the line (just a mental mistake there getting caught in a bad spot).

Ennis -- -- Welcome to another new starting lineup. As we saw last game, we desperately need a playmaker in the starting lineup. Ingram can’t do it. Ennis stepped into that void and orchestrated the offense well and helped push the pace. He was setting the table for others throughout the game, but also getting to the rim for scores, as well. In double overtime, he scored 7 points taking it to the rim. Those were some big scores. Shame we wasted the career night from him. Just couldn’t quite get to the finish line in regulation when we had a lead. Couldn’t get over the hump in overtime, despite having that lead behind some of Ennis’s work in the double OT. Obviously, he’s not going to give you big nights like these much, but we are going to need to lean on him to orchestrate the offense for us at the very least with Ball out. Can’t have BI dominating the ball. He thought the key to the Lakers trying to take this one tonight was the pace. “We played really fast for most of the game,” he said. Unfortunately, things slow down quite a bit at the end of games. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 8-18 shooting (0-3 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 11 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 6 fouls in 45 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He took a pass in transition, attacked the paint and scored the layup. He attacked and fed Randle, who blew the assist, but made the putback. He missed a short one in the paint. He got backdoored for a layup. He drew a moving screen call to get a stop. Too low on the lob to Bogut and it was picked off. He kicked to Brewer for a three. He blew past CP3 for a layup against the shotclock. Second Half: He kicked to Hart for the three. He stepped on the sideline on a pushoff. He swiped the ball from CP3 and it led to a breakaway score. He drew FTs on a reach from CP3 as he went up to shoot over a trap in the paint, he made one FT. He had a switch, attacked it, spun and scored the layup. He attacked off the Randle screen, drew the D and went behind his back to Randle for the layup. He drew an offensive foul defending the post against a big. He missed a wing three. He missed a layup trying to finish high off the glass. He drew a push foul on the defensive boards on Harden for FTs, he made both. He attacked the paint in early offense and scored a layup. He was blocked on a drive. He rejected the screen, attacked across the lane and hit the hook. He missed a drive, but we got it back. He was stripped on a drive. He attacked and couldn’t finish. Overtime: His layup went over the backboard. Overtime 2: He attacked on a switch, picked up the dribble, spun and hit the jumphook to start OT. He attacked a switch again next time down and scored the And-1 lefty layup over Black, he made the FT. He attacked in transition and couldn’t finish. He missed a deep three on a kickout. He probed from the wing and reversed. He missed a three, but we got it back.

Clarkson -- -- We had plenty of scoring tonight. The trick was finding units that could get stops against Harden and CP3. That left JC on the outside quite a bit as we went with more Ennis, Hart and Brewer. Right call in that regard for tonight. I still wouldn’t mind seeing JC get a chance on those final possessions of games, but he mucks up the end of quarter shots a bit too much that it hurts his chances here. He needs to clean those plays up to build trust. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-7 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 turnover and no fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He airballed a three on his first touch. He spun around Nene and scored the lefty layup. He split a double team and drew FTs at the rim, he made both. He set up Nance in the paint for FTs. He missed a scooping lob finish down the middle of the paint. He missed a wing jumper on a switch, but Bogut tipped it in with smaller rebounders in the paint. He pushed it out, didn’t go for the highlight lob pass and found Brewer instead for the simple layup. He swiped the ball on the perimeter. He attacked the paint and hit a runner (probably an And-1). His bounce pass was picked off. He pounded the dribble and airballed a shot at the buzzer, poor look. Second Half: He missed a three. Overtime: Nothing to report.

Nance -- -- Nearly a chance to win it in regulation with the three-quarter lob from Hart, but Larry couldn’t hold onto it cleanly. Tough to do after you body up a man, then take a ball with that much velocity cleanly. He holds that pass, it’s a game winner. Glad Luke went away from Nance as the C in OT when Randle fouled out. In the first half, he was in at backup center and we lost the lead quickly. We slid him over to PF with Bogut as C and we tied it up again. They were much shakier in the fourth quarter in those minutes. Also wish we would have gone back to Randle a minute or two earlier. Nance had a bit And-1 putback in overtime, but missed that FT. Could have used that extra point in the first OT. Our guys let a few too many of those OT freethrows get away from them. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 2-6 shooting (3-5 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist and 1 foul in 18 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He drew FTs in the paint when JC found him, he made one. He missed an off-balance wing jumper on a kickout. He was “blocked” (fouled) on a dunk attempt with no call (wasn’t even close to getting the ball). He missed a runner in the paint. Second Half: He drew FTs getting post position on a smaller player, he made both. He couldn’t score in the post, not powering up. He grabbed a rebound and scored the easy layup. Overtime: He scored an And-1 putback, he missed the FT. Overtime 2: Nothing to report.

Brewer -- -- Last time in Houston he had his game of the season. He had a strong 7-point first half on 3-4 shooting in this one. He’d only score 2 points the rest of the game. When the speed of the game slows down late or in overtime, that doesn’t play to his strengths. We definitely needed his help D out there, not a lot of alternatives tonight with the depleted lineup. The Stats: He scored 9 pointson 4-8 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 6 boards, 4 assists, 1 block, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He attacked off the three line and scored a layup. Wild finish attempt in transition. He found Caruso on an inbounds for a layup. He scored a layup in transition. He rattled in a wing three on a kickout. Second Half: He missed a three on a kickout. He rejected Black on help D in the paint. He missed a step-back three. He cut back door and scored a layup when Randle found him. Overtime: He attacked and was rejected. Overtime 2: Nothing to report.

Caruso -- – He was able to check in with a highlight play of the night on an And-1 throwdown over Tucker on the break. He’s got some hops and showed it. He scored a reverse on an inbounds for his other score. A bit shaky on some drives in the second half, so Luke cut his time short. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting (0-1 from the line) to go with 2 boards and 3 fouls in 9 minutse. He was a +2. The Action: He threw down an And-1 dunk over Tucker in transition, he missed the FT. He reversed off the inbounds pass. He missed a jumper against the shotclock. Second Half: He missed a runner on iso. He missed a leaning jumper in the paint, way short.

Bogut -- -- The second unit survived in the first half with Bogut at the C tipping in missed shots. He had three of those, which we probably won’t ever see with regularity again this season. He also avoided the usual moving screen call. That all helped him maintain a positive in the +/- tonight. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-3 shooting to go with 5 boards (3 offensive boards) and 1 foul in 8 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He tipped in a missed a jumper. He tipped in another missed shot. Another tip in of a missed jumper. Second Half: Nothing to report. Overtime: In briefly to board or challenge the inbounder in the final 0.8.

Walton -- -- The Lakers led by 2 with Randle and Kuzma getting the Lakers offense going early… Brewer in for Hart when Josh picked up a couple reach fouls, Lakers down 1… Julius killing the Rockets… They were tied 28-28 when a timeout came with 3 minutes left. Randle sat out here with 14 points on 7-10 shooting (scoring on 7-8 possessions because of the putbacks on his own misses) and 7 boards… Nance, Kuzma, Brewer, Ingram, JC… Caruso in for BI with a minute left… No interior D and some very soft perimeter D at times… The Lakers trailed 44-37 after the first quarter… He started a Bogut, Nance, Brewer, Caruso, JC lineup... Bogut tipping in three Laker misses and this unit tied it up 51-51… Ennis in for Caruso… Randle/Kuzma back in with 6 minutes left, down 1… All starters in, Lakers down 2 with 5 minutes left… They pushed out to a 7-point lead on an 11-0 run when the timeout came with under 3 minutes left… Lakers getting stops on D… He picked up a tech on a foul call Harden drew. Hart picked up his third on that and sat for JC with 2 minutes left up 6… The Lakers led 72-65 at the half… The Lakers shot 61% in the half, making 4-5 from three. The Rockets were 7-24 from three… Lakers getting out in transition and hitting some threes to pull out to a 16-point lead when the timeout came midway through the quarter… The lead was 17 and cut to 10 on a 7-0 run by the Rockets in the next minute… Luke brought in Brewer for Kuzma. They set up a three for Hart on a screen the screener play out of that timeout… Randle sat for Nance with 2 minutes left, Lakers up 11… So Nance, Brewer, Ingram, Hart, Ennis... JC in a few seconds later for Ennis… Caruso in with 47 seconds left for Ingram, who had 2 turnovers trying to drive… The Lakers took a 101-90 lead into the fourth… He went with the Bogut, Nance, Brewer, JC, Caruso unit to start the fourth… No purpose to the offense to start the fourth and the lead was cut to 6, Luke called a timeout after 2 minutes… He brought in Kuzma for Bogut and Ennis for Caruso. Uggh. Nance at C lineup again… Up 5 when Randle and Hart returned with 6:50 left. Kuzma and Nance out… Starters with Brewer instead of Kuzma right now up 5… Timeout up 4 with 5 minutes left… Kuzma in for Brewer… Up 3 with 1:48 timeout. Lakers lead slowly getting chipped away… Tied up with 17 seconds left, timeout. Long three attempt on iso by Kuzma but left 1.7 seconds left on the clock. Not a great call there, nor good execution and we left time on the clock… Overtime: Randle fouled out and Nance in… Down 2, he sat Nance for Brewer… Down 2 with 4 seconds left, timeout. Ingram attacked and was fouled with 0.8. Ingram made both to tie it up… Overtime 2: Back and forth. Lakers had a lead with Ennis scoring… Hart fouled out with a minute left. Lakers down 2 with 5.7 seconds left. Timeout. Kuzma turnover getting stripped on a three attempt off the sideline inbounds. We had to foul and were down 4 with 3.6 left. Ball game… Lakers shot 50.5% and had 31 assists. They shot 70% from the line, 26-37…

Man, Randle was in beast mode. He was playing under some much control.
Is it a combo of his hunger, offseason work and who was guarding him? Someone give me their perspective. He looked unstoppable.. It was like he mixed a little bit of Shaq and Lebron into his gatorade. I love it.

Man, Randle was in beast mode. He was playing under some much control.
Is it a combo of his hunger, offseason work and who was guarding him? Someone give me their perspective. He looked unstoppable.. It was like he mixed a little bit of Shaq and Lebron into his gatorade. I love it.
Great that Randle had a great game against the likes of Capela, Black and others in his contract year.

Happy New Year greeting to DB and everyone else!!!

Thanks DB and Happy New Year.

Right on about Randle and those careless fouls but what a game he had. Thought he did a better job on Harden than last time. The fact that he is even out there guarding Harden or CP3 just you what a great defender he has become. You could tell by the body language that he wanted to take on the responsibility of guarding those guys.

Don't like BI dribbling into 3 guys to much like Clarkson. Ball stop, turnover.

Loved Hart and it looks like we may have another find late in the first round. Tough dude.

Lakers' December Report:

- Played great against top teams, but lost, coz they were top teams.

- Played bad against other teams and lost, coz we played bad.

Randle- noting that he is really in his third year was important. Typically by the third year, you have a sense of what you've got in a player. Randle is a player. There are just so few players that you can describe as "dominating". I'm hopeful that Luke & Randle find the right connection because Randle can really flourish with working on his game, and the right coaching.

Ingram- Needs to read the floor better. He dribbled right into losing the ball on at least two consecutive occasions. It's like he had his mind made up before making the move, and dribbled right into turnovers.

KCP, Lopez- Classic one year rentals. Especially KCP because....

Hart- Plays the type of game you want from KCP: mature and selfless. He's good in the areas we need most: intelligence, shooting, defense, and great character. He keeps playing like this and we're going to have some great, great young talent to build around.

Kuzma- A keeper. Nuff' said

Nance- You mentioned if he had caught the ball in that last minute possession. Actually, Stu mentioned that Larry would have had a better attempt if he had tapped it to the rim, rather than try to catch it. That would have been awesome if he had just gently tapped it at the rim, and it fell in as we move into the new year. Oh well.

Thanks DB, and a blessed and Happy New Year to LG'ers.

Cheers, all! Be safe out there tonight!

Cheers back DB! Happy New Year!

And thank you for the great write ups!

Hart and Randle - great to see them break out when given the opportunity to do so. Good to see Ingram play within the offense again too. Good game overall.

I mostly missed the game last night. I saw a little bit of the 4th and listened to the first OT I think, it was tied at 122 all and Kyle missed a shot and I thought sure we lost it then, so I was surprised to check back later and see that we pushed it to a 2nd OT.

I watched the replay just now. Heartbreaker. We played well & hard for the most part and just lost.

(EDIT - BillyMac is on super annoying in the closing moments of this game)
