Seven Straight Losses… The Lakers continue their freefall with a 114-96 loss to the Timberwolves tonight.

Double overtime and a late flight in, you knew they might be a bit sluggish. Luke sat the entire starting unit after 3 minutes for his bench as the team fell behind early 16-0.

In general, the slow starts can be often attributed to our starters simply not being as talented as the opponent’s starters. We have many good players, but none great yet. It’s a familiar story, but the slow start had them in the hole all night. They would cut the lead to 5 but could never dig out of the hole. They didn’t win a single quarter tonight.

The Lakers coughed the ball up 24 times. Too many unforced turnovers or poor decisions. Too many fouls off those.

“If you are going to turn the ball over and foul the home team, you’re going to make it pretty impossible for you,” Luke said.

Randle -- -- A bit sloppy with the ball in his hands tonight as he had 4 turnovers. Offensively, our starters looked out of sync offensively. Randle battled from start to finish, however. Some good coast-to-coast scores. He did have one charge, but he also had a rare moment of recognition of when he didn’t have an advantage and he pulled it back out and another sequence where he slowed it down to go around a defender under control and score a layup. So a couple instances where he’s making good decisions instead of getting into trouble. I also like tonight he had a power up dunk in a crowd instead of getting blocked on a layup. Sure would be nice to see him starting with Lonzo out there. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-10 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 12 boards (5 offensive), 1 steal, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: He was called for a charge on his first touch. He was stripped on an attack. He missed a baseline jumper. He drew a charge on a KAT’s drive. He scored a putback on an Ennis drive. He missed a jumphook in the lane, got it back and was blocked. He regained a possession drawing a foul on the offensive glass for FTs, he made one. He scored a layup off the interior feed from JC. He grabbed an offensive board in a crowd and powered up for the dunk (more of that, please). Second Half: He swiped a pass in the corner and pushed it coast to coast for the layup. Great job taking a pass on the break, slowing just enough to go around a defender under control and scoring the layup. He was stripped trying to create on iso. He pushed out the board and drew FTs, he made both. He spun and lost the ball. He pushed it coast to coast and scored a layup.

Kuzma -- -- Scoreless in the first half, going 0-3 in just 9 minutes. I think the rookies will definitely feel these minutes and situations. He struggled again with some of those finishes in the paint. He did sink a couple of threes in the seconds half for his points. Glad we kept the minutes low for him tonight. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-7 shooting (2-4 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -17. The Action: He airballed a wing three to start. He missed a reverse. He attacked and missed a runner. He shuffled his feet on a drive off the three line for a travel. He missed a tech FT. Second Half: He sank a wing three to start the second half on a kickout from Hart. He sank a sideline three on the pick and pop. He missed a three trailing the break. He pushed out the break and hit Randle for the layup. He was blocked on a drive.

Ingram -- -- He had some scores in the midrange and did well on the glass again, but still finished with the team low -20. His turnovers were turned into points the other way. He’s got to be careful with the handle trying to create when it’s not there. Surprisingly only one assist tonight, because I thought he moved the ball a little better than that. But he wasn’t really breaking down the D. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 4-11 shooting (0-2 from three, 6-7 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 block, 2 turnover and 2 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -20. The Action: He missed a step-through in a crowd. He missed a wing jumper on iso. Turnover off the dribble for a break the other way. He made an And-1 16-footer, he made the FT. He got tapped on a wing three. He drew FTs against a double team, he made both. He missed a wide open corner three. He drew FTs off ball in transition, he made one. Perimeter foul on the dribble for FTs, he made both. He was stripped trying to create, layup the other way. He swished a pull-up at the FT line. He had 10 points on 2-7 shooting, going 6-7 from the line. Second Half: He kicked out to Hart for a three. He choked a lob. He drained his baseline turnaround in the post. He attacked right, recognized the help D and hit the baseline pull-up. He missed a pull-up from the elbow.

Hart -- -- More foul issues in this one. “I’m a rookie. That’s all I can really say about that. I want to see the clips of my five fouls today and my six fouls yesterday,” he said, mentioning he’s going up against superstars and insinuating they are getting superstar calls. Tough assignments, he needs to watch those silly fouls in the backcourt, though. Another of those tonight. He sank a couple more threes tonight to go with a couple finishes at the rim. Great seeing that three ball looking more consistent lately. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-7 shooting (2-4 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -18. The Action: He attacked and threw a pass out of bounds. He attacked and missed a layup. He attacked off the handoff for a layup. He sank a wing three in transition next time down. Second Half: He probed and kicked to Kuzma for the three. He sank a wing three on a kickout from Ingram. Bad foul in the backcourt and he had to sit after 3 minutes with his fifth. He missed a tough corner three, off balance. He dunked on the break. He missed a three.

Ennis -- – He’s not going to be dropping 20 with frequency. Good to see he was one of the few tonight without a turnover. Also nice to see a three fall for him because his perimeter shooting has been miserable. It was decent last season. Maybe these minutes will jumpstart that. Not sure how long until Lonzo gets back. I think he’s earning himself some minutes maybe with Clarkson when Ball returns, which can’t come any sooner. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 2-7 shooting (1-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals, 1 block and 3 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -17. The Action: He missed an open wing three, way short. He missed a layup. He missed a corner three. He sank a wing three on a swing pass. He blocked a drive but was blocked himself in transition. Second Half: He lost his man on a behind-the-back dribble and took it for the layup. He circled into the lane and hit Brewer for the layup. He drew FTs on a quick counterstrike as look was trying to call a timeout, he made both. Way short on a transition three.

Clarkson -- -- Probably one of the fresher guys on the floor tonight after he sat quite a bit in the previous game. JC led th eteam in scoring with 20 points. He knocked down a couple of threes and had several finishes around the hoop. He helped pick the team up from their slow start and had a couple of scoring runs during the game. Just not enough talent out there tonight to help him. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-15 shooting (2-6 from three, 4-7 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 24 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He missed a wing jumper, we got it back to him and he hit a three. He missed a wing three. Soft D, giving up a layup in the post. He missed an awkward floater in the paint. He attacked the paint and drew FTs, he made one FT. He missed a tech FT. He sank a midrange jumper on the inbounds pass. He missed a step-back corner three. He attacked and scooped in a reverse over his head. Interior feed to Randle for the layup. Loose ball foul for FTs, he made both. He was picked, then fouled to give up FTs. He missed a wing three. He had 10 points on 3-8 shooting and 3 assists. Second Half: He missed a pull-up at the FT line, I think expecting a whistle. Nice bounce pass to Nance under the hoop for the score. He grabbed a bad pass and pushed out for FTs, he made one. He reversed on the break off the Nance feed. He sank a pull-up off the high screen for three. He cured into the paint and hit the short one, asking for the foul. He threw a pass away. He attacked off the three line and threw it away. He crossed over but missed the lefty finish. He missed a corner three. He stepped around a defender on the break and reversed.

Nance -- -- Some sloppy passing for turnovers to start. In the second half, he did a better job feeding teammates with bounce passes on the break, but still had another bad pass. Don’t expect 3 turnovers from Nance. Teammates set him up for a couple of his scores. His other score came on a jumphook working the post. He had a couple of iso sequences where the offense stood around expecting him to go to work. That’s pretty rare, but kind of showed how we were out of sync. Again, Luke went to him at the C spot for stretches. It wasn’t good. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-5 shooting to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 20 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He took a charge on KAT’s drive. Unforced turnover, throwing a pass in the back court. He iso’d, spun away from a double and hit the baseline jumphook. He threw a pass out of bounds. Second Half: He missed a pull-up bank he should have taken for a layup. He scored at the rim on a weave sequence when JC found him. He scored a layup off the corner drive and dish from Brewer. Low pass to Zubac in the paint, turnover. He swiped a pass and fed JC on the break for the reverse. He missed a corner jumper. He pushed out the break and hit Hart for the dunk.

Brewer -- -- The 12 points he gave us tonight were probably not worth the 4 turnovers. When you’re a player who doesn’t hand the ball a ton. That sticks out. Just too many turnovers from our most senior players tonight. He got into the passing lanes for some steals, but also had a missed gamble that cost us. “Once we get our guys back and get home, I think we’ll be fine,” Brewer said. The Lakers need to defend home court. We’ve been too easy to beat there lately. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-7 shooting (1-3 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He sank a corner three on a kickout. He jumped a lane, stole the ball and took it for a layup. He threw an inbounds away. He airballed a corner three. He took a pass and was hacked on the finish for FTs, he made both. Quick counter attack off a made FT and he scored a layup. He stole the ball to ignite the break but nearly threw it away in transition. He charged trying to finish a layup. Second Half: Open for three in transition, airball. He swatted a drive getting back on D. He cut off Ennis’s drive and he found him for a layup. He was rejected in the paint. He drew FTs on a quick counterstrike, he made one. He drew a charge on KAT in transition. He attacked on iso, spun and lost the handle. He attacked from the corner and hit Nance for a layup in the paint.

Bogut -- -- He had one of the more bonehead turnovers tonight at the end of the quarter when we got a stop. That gave up two FTs. Expect better from the vets. Luke went to Zubac in the second half. The Stats: He didn’t score and had 3 boards, 1 assist and 1 turnover in 8 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: Dumb pass at the end of the quarter, throwing it up high, basically up for grabs at the end of the quarter when time was about to expire and we fouled for FTs trying to recover. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Caruso -- -- I feel like if this were the preseason, he’d be making the case to cut him. He just hasn’t had a consistently good impact lately. He had a couple steals tonight, but also three turnovers. He needs to have a good game or two here soon because that window is closing with Lonzo’s return. He’s just not giving the team a reason to play him. Pretty much a nothing game tonight. The Stats: He scored 1 points on 0-2 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He missed a layup cutting down the lane off JC’s drive. He drew FTs in transition and made one. He deflected a pass and recovered it. Indecisive on a bounce pass and it was picked off. He attacked and setup Brewer for FTs. Second Half: He threw a pass right to a defender. He missed a wing three. He attacked and was picked.

Zubac -- -- He came in to start the fourth alongside Nance. Good to see Zu out there. Good to see us move Nance to PF. Wish that would be a consistent rule, but it’s not. Zubac had a couple of scores in the paint. Defensively, he was solid enough. Had a nice sequence forcing KAT into a turnover. Tough cover for him tonight. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-3 shooting to go with 4 boards, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Illegal screen, turnover. He grabbed an offensive board and hit the jumphook. He hit the baseline jumphook on the drive and dish from Blue. He forced KAT into a turnover on iso D. He missed a jumphook.

Blue -- -- With the offense stalling out, the team looking sluggish and some foul issues, we went deeper into our rotations with some serious South Bay Laker action tonight. Vander missed both his threes tonight and scored his point getting fouled on a drive. Pretty solid defensively. He actually led the team with the +6. Just hasn’t looked like himself yet when he gets NBA minutes. Like Caruso, he needs to make a case for himself out there when he gets his chances. The Stats: He scored 1 points on 0-2 shooting from three (1-2 from the line) to go with 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 turnover in 17 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He attacked off the three line and drew FTs on the layup attempt, he made one. He missed a deep three up against the shotclock. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He attacked and hit Zubac for the score. He swiped the ball on help D, pushed it out and was tied up.

Walton -- -- The Lakers quickly trailed 9-0 and Luke called a timeout… Down 14-0 with 8:24, he sat everyone for the Bogut, Nance, Brewer, JC, Caruso unit… The team trailed 16-0 before scoring. The second unit looked more active and got the team going… The Lakers trailed 30-18 after the first quarter… Starters back in to start the second quarter… It took 2 more minutes for the starters to finally score… Down 39-20, he brought in Blue for Hart… Down 16, Hart back in for Kuzma… They put together a 12-2 run to cut it to 9… Brewer in for Hart… JC in for Blue… Kuzma back in with 1:46 for Ennis, down 14… Tons of FTs for both teams… The Lakers trailed 60-48 at the half… They cut it to 5 after a couple of minutes… Hart with five fouls, Brewer in… Lakers down 10 when Nance came in for Randle with 3:30 left… Down 12 when Luke called a timeout shortly later… He went with the Nance, Brewer, JC, Blue, Caruso lineup… This lineup imploded and we trailed 91-72… The Lakers trailed 91-76 heading into the fourth… Yay, no Nance at C to start the fourth. He went with Zubac, Nance, JC, Blue and Caruso. Not world beaters, for sure… An 8-0 run by this unit to cut it to 11… Hart back in for Caruso, down 13… Ingram in for Blue midway through the quarter, same lead… Randle in for Nance with 4 minutes left… Lakers shot 8-26 from three (31 percent) and 20-29 from the line (69 percent)…

Nah, he’s been playing through a thigh injury..and reaggrevated it against the Wolves, I don’t think the team will bring up the injuries as a excuse but I’m betting that half of the players who are playing right now are dealing with some sort of discomfort but they can’t afford to sit out or else we would be watching a G league line up.

Maybe Luke should talk to Pop on how to effectively (and legally - NBA-wise) how to DNP-Rest.

One difference between a veteran and rookie/young teams can be seen in a race between the turtoise and the hare. Only Westbrook can play at 150% of attacking basketball

Can Randle be an impactful starting center with a max contract for an elite team?

It does not have to be a DNP. It's about monitoring minutes, which Luke did very well last season but has been miserable in this one.

Thanks, DB!
Seems like a good game to miss. Although the game had Zubac in. Something I have longed for.

That Walton smiley crying is not a good start to the year.

Your option can be considered. When the game is close and Kuzma and Ingram are available (at this time), Luke is (and should be) going for the win.

If they are on the Inactive List, these players will have a full game, plus whatever off days, to fully rest themselves - especially since Kuzma was averaging 34-37 MPG, like Ingram, and they are obviously affected

Kuzma, Hart and Ball are great because they have never used injuries as an issue.

Recent Rockets game proved that the team is progressing, even without Ball playing

Well we were so bad in '15-'16 we lost to the 0-22 Sixers or whatever they were.

It's just this year and last year. I've found the problem is that the team is okay at 100%, but they're very thin and can't handle losing players.

Last year we lost Dlo and Nick in December and the team just fell apart. This year we lost Lopez (which means Bogut is playing) and Lonzo and the team's started to look bad (also the schedule has been pretty gross).

Any Team not name the Warriors would have problems if 2-3 key players are not playing in a stretch of games against the elite NBA teams.

Main problem is not that they are very thin, Luke’s issue is that hisnroaterbate filled with very young players and their veterans are not providing the needed leadership and production - that includes Randle and JC

Finally a Zubac sighting with some meaningful minutes and decent production. Like to see more of this on a regular basis.

Probably a lot of different reasons, but certain when injuries start we aren't talented enough to deal with that...plus it messes with Luke. Both with his rotations and how first and second units are used.

If we can stay healthy, though, I think we'll look better as the season progresses. So many young guys on this team.

Luke is probably the biggest goat, he hasn’t learn how to properly rest players like Pop!
