Just Bad… Last time we played the Hornets, our guards picked apart Dwight’s lack of pick and roll defensive skills. They were methodical and relentless down the stretch. Tonight, the Lakers were picked apart by Charlotte like hyenas going after the rotting carcass of a dead animal.

The Lakers were poor in transition, especially some of the guards. They were poor on the glass, again no boxing out by guards on switches…and so many switches to set that up. They lineups once again shuffled with Lopez and Randle starting together for the first time. The Hornets ate that up.

The Lakers blown out once again, 108-94. That score is closer than it appeared.

“We’re going to get back to being a good defensive team no matter what it takes,” Luke said.

Asked how that’s going to happen, he said, “I think it will help that we got some bodies back. I think that right now it’s more one of those times where it’s a mental challenge than anything else because people are tired. We’re playing guys big minutes. We’re asking a lot of some very young players.”

Hopefully, the return of Lopez and Ball help. This tailspin his out of control right now.

Ball -- -- Back in the starting lineup, but his minutes were limited. He didn’t look rusty other than maybe being off the mark on some lob passes that were there for him. He sank three threes and had a great throwdown after losing his man on the dribble. He was a team-low -24 tonight. The Lakers had a -17 net rating without Lonzo the past several games compared to when he was previously. The slump tonight probably tarnished that some. We’ll see if they pull out of the nosedive, but they showed no hint of that tonight. Good seeing Lonzo back out there despite the loss. “We got to let defense go to offense, not offense go to defense,” he said. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-8 shooting (3-7 from three) to go with 4 boards, 5 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -24. The Action: He missed a corner three. He hit Lopez on the pick and pop for the three. He missed an open three out of a timeout. He swiped a pass and quickly outlet. Quick pushout to Ingram for the dunk. He changed directions in early offense, attacked and threw down. He drained a three on a kickout from Larry. Off the mark on a lob to Randle on the screen-roll. He hit Hart for a three. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He sank a corner three off the weave play to start the half. Deep three behind a screen in early offense. He airballed a wing three. He lobbed to Nance on the slip screen to start the fourth with a dunk.

Randle -- -- Liked what he said after the game. “We got two options. We can just lay down or keep fighting. I think the guys in here are made up of a lot of integrity and courage that we’re going to keep fighting.” They need more leadership from him. Luke slid him down to the PF spot in order to start Lopez. This is pretty much the lineup most people thought we would start the season with and work on the lineup variations from here. Despite the team getting killed tonight, they were just -2 when Randle was on the floor. Offensively, Randle brings the same floor spacing as Nance to the starting PF, which isn’t much, but he does push tempo much more and can create scores. He needs to watch those drives that aren’t there as that’s prone to turnovers as that happed a few times tonight. He had another of those Brandon Bass type of finishes where he powers up in a crowd and slams (he bumped Howard back, then dunked). Not going to say it’s a trend, but he’s done that more in the past week than all season. I want to see a lot more of that gathering and exploding up to the rim like Bass, who is similarly sized. Randle said they aren’t playing on a string defensively. You can see a lot of talking about mistakes out there after breakdowns these days. That wasn’t happening earlier in the season. Guys just aren’t playing together. Double-double for Randle tonight. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-9 shooting (5-5 from the line) to go with 10 boards (4 offensive), 2 assists, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He grabbed an offensive board and scored over two players. He dribbled into a crowd and turned it over. He sank a fallaway from 12 feet after backing a man down. Poor finish on a lob attempt (pass hung up there a bit). He backed a man down, drop-stepped and banked in the jumphook. He attacked a crowd and was stripped. He was fouled in the post for FTs, he made both. Second Half: He grabbed an offensive board between defenders, rocked Dwight back, rose up and slammed (more please). He filled a lane with speed trailing the break and drew FTs, he made both. He posted up, missed, got the ball back on the other side of the board and powered in the And-1, he made the FT. He was called for a charge in transition, a little OC. He missed a turnaround in the paint.

Ingram -- -- “Just trying to get back to the way I was playing,” Ingram said. He had 14 points on 6-11 shooting, 9 boards and 3 assists in the first half. A good mix of hitting from the midrange, a three, some cuts off ball for dunks and a couple of drives. That was a very solid, well-rounded game. He didn’t force anything, hit those pull-ups with frequency, but I really like the off-ball movement for scores. That’s the part of his game we need to build up. It helps the team. Despite the team giving up 16 offensive boards, Ingram did his part with a career-high 14. Love seeing that and we need it with more consistency. Defensively, less of the getting burned by cuts. He was a little soft on the perimeter at times, but at least he cut down on the major mental mistakes of previous games. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 10-18 shooting (1-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 14 boards (4 offensive), 4 assists, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He missed a fade across the lane. He swished a pull-up 18-footer. He missed a wing jumper. He probed and kicked out to Lopez for three. He choked a lefty layup on the break, got to finish those. He dunked when Lonzo found him in transition. He attacked left and finished high over Dwight for the score. He missed a long wing jumper in transition. He cut baseline and JC found him for the dunk. He inbounded from the sideline, quickly cut to take the return pass and dunked. He attacked and threw a pass away that wasn’t there, three the other way. Long outlet to Lopez for the dunk. He was fouled trying to fight for post position, he made one. He missed a leaner trying to draw a foul. He swished a corner three on a kickout. Second Half: He had Dwight backing up and swished the pull-up jumper. He attacked a couple defenders in transition and was swatted. He swished an elbow pull-up taking the handoff. Same spot next time down and he got tapped. He swished a pull-up at the FT line. He attacked and threw it away. He lobbed to Nance in transition for a dunk. He missed a layup on a step-through but follow tipped it in. Bad read on a bounce pass, turnover.

Lopez -- Back in the starting lineup after his return in the last game. It’s hard not to harp on the 2 rebounds from your starting center when you get killed on the glass, even with some of the switching we do. Just no presence on the glass. Offensively, he was pretty much relegated to spot up shooter from three in this game. No getting into the midrange where he excels. Some good passing sequences from him to cutters. Defensively, no presence yet. Hopefully, he and Lonzo can help tighten up that end of the floor. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-7 shooting (3-6 from three) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 1 turnover and no fouls in 19 minutes. The Action: He sank a three on the pick and pop with Lonzo. He missed a three. He swished a corner three on a kickout. He hit Ingram on the give and go for a dunk. He dunked off the long outlet from Ingram. He backed a man down and expected a foul that didn’t come as he lost the ball. Second Half: He sank a three off a swing pass. He missed a forced, deep three. Way short on a wing three.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Some lazy defensive sequences to give up dunks or scores in transition by either not getting in proper position or allowing mismatches. Really frustrating. I think Randle and Luke also looked frustrated with him in the second half when he didn’t help on Dwight to box him out. Luke actually sat him early in the third for Hart and never brought him back. As far as I recall, that’s the first time KCP has been benched this season. It should have happened many times already, but at least Luke finally gave him the hook in a game. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting from three to go with 1 steal, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 20 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He missed a three behind a screen. A pass on the break went right through his hands, turnover. He missed a wide open wing three, then played matador D to give up a massive dunk on the other end. Lazy transition D leaving Lopez on Kemba to give up a score at the buzzer. Second Half: He missed a wide open three. No boxout on help D and he gave up a dunk.

Kuzma -- -- Back to the bench, he was cold to start the game. He struggled. He said it’s in his head and that he’s not playing hard enough right now. He won’t admit to getting fatigued or banged up or hitting the rookie wall. Hitting that wall was maybe the only thing he hit tonight. He was shooting blanks from three (0-6) and not great shot selection on drives (pass a few more of those) to finish 2-14 for just 4 points and only 2 boards. He definitely didn’t have that jump in his step tonight. “I don’t think we’re giving enough effort as a team right now,” he said. They can’t really compete without him. Just not enough talent on this team. Hopefully, he rebounds in the next one. DFish made a good point after the game that sometimes young players think they need to go harder and they speed themselves up, when they really need to go harder by playing smarter. Kuzma needs to go smarter when he’s struggling. Better shot selection, more passing, work on the hustle plays, sure, but don’t just attack harder. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-14 shooting (0-6 form three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 2 blocks, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: Indecisive and he traveled at the three line. Not close on a wing three. He missed a layup off a Euro-step. He missed a three straight away and long. He missed a pull-up wing jumper. He attacked, spun and banked the jumphook. He blocked a drive. He attacked a crowd and coughed it up. Second Half: He missed a quick-fire corner three. He set up Nance for a score. He attacked poor spacing and dribbled it off his foot, turnover. He was swatted. He missed a three on the kickout. He missed a wing three. He attacked right and hit the layup off glass. He was blocked in transition. He attacked left, spun and missed the tough runner. He missed a wide open corner three. He attacked across the lane and missed.

Clarkson -- -- Man, some of the defensive problems are really painful to watch at times. Not matching up properly in transition, useless on the glass or bodying guys up on switches under the hoop, or weak to late tags on help D. Offensively, he struggled from three, making just one of his five attempts. He also struggles with decision making on the break. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-10 shooting (1-5 from three) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He swished a wing pull-up jumper off the screen. Awful decision on the break, not attacking and passing and it led to a long Laker miss instead of a layup against numbers. He missed a jumper on a pull-back dribble, then missed a three. He deflected a pass to get a stop. He no-looked to Ingram cutting baseline for a dunk. He missed a pull-up off a great screen by Nance (probably should have hit Nance rolling). He couldn’t finish a lob pass from Lonzo. He was picked on the perimeter. Easy pull-up jumper off the screen with Dwight hanging back in the paint. He missed a three. He kicked to Ingram for a three. He missed another three then didn’t hustle back in transition giving up an easy score. He swished a wing three on a kickout. Second Half: He missed the pull-up three. He couldn’t handle an interior pass, turnover. He missed a drive on a bad angle finish. He attacked, got caught in the air and threw it away for the dunk the other way.

Nance -- -- What happens with Nance at C? First, he’s not as effective as Randle at holding his own against the guards on switches. Secondly, he’s not a shotblocker despite his hops. So if he’s the guy on the perimeter, you don’t get a lot and if he’s the guy protecting the rim you don’t get a lot. It’s watered down impact in both areas. When he’s at the PF, we benefit from his help D reads as teams attack our C spot more. He can also get into the passing lane with his athleticism with more frequency. Offensively, the bigs can sag into the paint and plug it without threat of Larry being aggressive in any way. So you end up with that second worst -17 tonight in 18 minutes. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-8 shooting to go with 4 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -17. The Action: He bricked a one-hander in the paint badly. He gave up an offensive board to Dwight and fouled him to prevent the score. He was fouled with no call on a putback attempt. He missed a 20-footer when the D sagged off him. He gave up another offensive board mistiming his jumper. He passed up the wide open jumper and kicked to Lonzo for a three. Second Half: He scored high over Dwight on an interior feed. He sank a 20-footer. He dunked on the long lob from Ingram in transition. He knocked a post entry pass away. He slipped the screen and dunked the lob from Lonzo.

Hart -- -- Unfortunate, he couldn’t hit a shot tonight because KCP’s minutes were freed up when he got benched. He made one three and a FT after getting steal and clear-path foul. Really also could have used some rebounding from a guard in this one, which is his strength. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-6 shooting (1-4 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He missed a three. He forced a big into shooting a shot over the backboard on a drive. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He swiped a pass and was fouled on the pushout (clear-path foul), he made one FT. He sank a wing three taking a pass behind a screen. Second Half: He missed a baseline pull-up. He airballed a sideline three.

Brewer -- -- Luke changed up his rotations, bringing Brewer in the fourth when the game was all but lost. The streak is alive. He got some garbage-time points. Luke praised him for playing hard to the finish. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-4 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 block, 1 turnover and no fouls in 12 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He missed a sideline three. He stepped in to draw a charge. He scored a layup on a garbage-time pushout. He missed a wild runner in transition. He drew FTs in transition on the attack. He scored a layup when Zu found him under the hoop.

Ennis -- -- So cold from three this year. He came in for the fourth quarter garbage time and showed off his issues from the perimeter. The only takeaway here is those continued struggles from three. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-5 shooting (0-3 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 9 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He jumped a passing lane and took the steal for a layup. He missed an open wing three on a kickout. He made a tech FT. He missed a wing three. He missed an open three. Garbage time layup.

Zubac -- -- In for the final three minutes of garbage time and wearing some bright orange hightops. Could have brought him in much sooner. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 1 board, 1 assist and no fouls in 3 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He missed a long hook in the lane. He drop-stepped and scored off the glass. He hit Brewer under the hoop for a layup.

Walton -- -- Another new starting lineup for the team to get used to. Let’s see if he settles into this one and lets it have some run over a longer stretch of games. They need to get some wins to make that happen… The Lakers trailed 15-9 when Luke called the early timeout… The Lakers trailed 22-18 when Lopez, Ball and Randle sat for Kuzma, JC and Nance, once again Nance at the C spot… Hart in for KCP down 1… The Lakers trailed 28-24 after the first… He started a Nance, Kuzma, Hart, JC, Ball lineup. No Brewer… They quickly fell back by 10… Lakers down 9 when Randle and KCP came in for Nance and JC with under 8 minutes left… They fell back by 12 and Luke called a timeout… Ingram in for Kuzma at the PF… Lopez in for Hart down 11… Ball out for JC, as well… Lakers transition D was awful, just lazy matching up properly. They gave up 22 points on the break in the half… The Lakers trailed 63-48 at the half… Luke yanked KCP (about time) for Hart down 9 after some poor D…Lakers down 13 when Nance and Kuzma came in for Randle and Lopez… Lakers can’t control the defensive glass this quarter. If you’re going to switch on the perimeter with bigs, everyone has to rebound… JC in for Ball down 19… The Lakers trailed 93-76 heading into the fourth… Nance, Kuzma, Brewer, JC, Lonzo unit… Down 25, Ennis and Randle in to go with Brewer, Ingram and Kuzma… Kuzma out for Hart… Ingram out for Kuzma…

TY DB, great write up as always.

Was nice to see the Lopez and Randle starting combo finally. Shame that the result was such a depressing game. Hopefully the Hawks coming up can get us to kick into gear again.

Randle-Kuzma, Lopez-Kuzma, Lopez-Nance all seem to work to some extent. Randle-Lopez was fine tonight. Haven't played it enough at all and we need to let it have some run. Problem with our big rotations is when we're throwing out these Nance-Kuzma, Nance-Ingram lineups with consistency. Can't play Nance at C. That just kills us again and again.

If you start Randle, you need to handle the rotations better so you don't run Nance at C. If you bring Randle off the bench, you need to manage his minutes better. You can't play Randle for small minutes. Nor is it best to play him 14-16 minutes straight to close games coming off the bench like Luke has done.

All this says to me is that the roster sucks.

As much as I love Nance, doesn't this mean we have to trade him if the long-term goal is to keep Randle (it probably isn't Plan A for the FO right now, but theoretically)? Agreed that Nance can't play C, but with that limitation, the fact that Randle and Kuz getting minutes should be a higher priority, and also that we probably still need to start a traditional center like Brook on most nights, it's a difficult task to consistently give him his own 20+ MPG at PF exclusively.

Giving the best when the best is needed to give accurate coverage to another bad performances is yet another example that DB is HOF caliber!!

Lopez and Randle
Neither are rim protectors
Neither are feared in the paint for offense and defense
With both of them on the court at the same time, not surprised of the great number of straight line layups by Charlotte
Is the physically talented Randle on a Max Contract the right fit for the Lakers, especially with no outside game.

Rebounds
With all our missed shots, everybody should have GREAT numbers on rebounds, but they don’t - though Ingram’s 14 rebounds were gratifying

Rookie Wall
Maybe FO should place Kuzma on IR one week before the ASG break to allow him have an extended rest

I think the bad offense is dictating the bad defense. Young players player better d when they are scoring.
If they miss Lonzo so much, why doesn't he bring the ball up all or most of the time.
Team needs more structure on offense. They are not good playing at a high pace.

Luke said something interesting about the veterans and how things work certain ways in the NBA but that there are roles that need to be filled. I assumed he was talking about KCP but am not sure.

Team needs more structure on offense. They are not good playing at a high pace.
As the commentators have shared, they are much better playing at a fast pace.

Team does not have a legitimate low-post threat (Randle/Lopez are our best options and they strike no fear in a half-court set in the paint).

With the veterans on this team not consistently producing (Randle, JC, KCP, Lopez) - there are no viable veteran leadership on this team

With Bogut now gone (http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/21983985/los-angeles-lakers-request-waivers-center-andrew-bogut-ahead-deadline), will the FO bring in a needed shooter - if any are available

Zubac and Bryant will bring in fresh legs and needed rim protection, has to be better than the lame and non-existent paint presence at this time
