The Stoppable Force vs. The Movable Object… The Hawks had lost 8 straight on the road, the Lakers 9 straight at home. Something would give, but what?

The Lakers fell behind early, but began to getting out in transition. By the end of the first half, they’d have a 28-0 advantage on the fastbreak.

“The Lakers are at their best when their opponent is missing,” DFish said at the half. Brilliant.

The Lakers would threaten to put the Hawks away for good with leads into the early 20s, but never pushed past that. For their part, the Hawks never threatened to get the lead into single digits. At the end of the night, the Lakers would have their most points on the break for a game this season with 42 (and the most since 2001). The Lakers literally would run away with it 132-113.

“It was good to see the guys get back to that mode where defense anchors what we do offensively,” Luke said.

Ball -- A well-rounded game from him. He was hitting the boards and the team was getting out in transition. He knocked down three threes. A lot of his threes are coming on catch-and-shoot situations versus tougher pull-ups or step-backs. We’re finding that better mix of on and off ball with him, where the ball is actually coming back to him when he gives it up. The +/- was better tonight because the Nance-at-C second unit did well against the bottom-of-the-pack Hawks. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-13 shooting (3-9 from three) to go with 10 boards, 6 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He missed a wing three. He missed a floater and follow tip, got it back in the corner and missed the three. He setup Nance on a lob for FTs. He tipped in the Kuzma missed layup in transition. He sank a wing three in transition when JC found him. He swished a sideline three on a kickout in transition. He missed a wing three and corner three on back-to-back possessions. Second Half: He hit Ingram for the three in transition. He missed an open wing three in transition. He sank a wing three stepping behind the screen to take the pass. He lobbed to Nance to start the fourth. He hit Hart in transition for the dunk. Quick change of ends to take the outlet and he dunked. Nice full-court feed to Hart who drew FTs. Short on a wing three.

Randle -- -- He led all Lakers with 12 points at the half (a nice 6-6 from the line). The Lakers struggled a bit to get going and it looked like they leaned on him some to help get them out of that. Short minutes tonight because the second unit went on a roll and Luke stuck with them. For some reason, Luke would bring Randle back with 3 minutes left instead of one of our deep bench bigs. Just weird at that point, seemed like a forced attempt to get a couple more minutes in. Some nice passes from Randle at times in this game and he’d finish with 4 assists. Also, excellent FT shooting. Luke said the team has put a lot of work in that lately and they finished 20-25 (80%) from the line. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 4-11 shooting (0-2 from three, 7-8 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He traveled on a kickout instead of taking the open jumper. He hit BI cutting for the And-1 layup. He drew the D and kicked to Ingram for the three. He missed a layup in transition. He threw down a lob from Ingram on the break. He posted up, drew the double and hit the jumphook in the middle of the paint. He was fouled in transition for FTs, he made both. He was blocked on a layup attempt. He picked up a tech. He spun and hit the jumphook, asking for the And-1. Excellent challenge on a drive by a guard. He attacked and missed a runner, then fouled. He was fouled on a roll to the hoop, he made both FTs. He outmuscled the D for an offensive board and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a long pull-up jumper at the buzzer. Second Half: He jumped a passing lane and took the steal for a dunk. He crossed over and was fouled on the drive for FTs, he made one. He lost the ball on the break, turnover. He missed on an up-and-under, got it back and missed a three trying to beat the shotclock. He found Brewer cutting for a reverse. He missed a chuck from three.

Ingram -- -- Super-efficient with 20 points on 6-7 shooting. He’s looked better in the last two with Lonzo back in the lineup. He’s not trying to do too much (and I assume we are no longer asking him to). The Lakers move the ball side to side and then go into their two-man attacks. That helps to prevent the D from loading up as the ball is pounded. The three ball was looking pretty smooth, nice high release and he was knocking down the wide open looks. Part of not forcing things was his ball movement. While he was missing some reads, he was still finding open men with consistency. That makes the team better and BI better. He’d lead the team with 7 assists tonight, but had a few brain cramps on his way to 5 turnovers, as well. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 6-7 shooting (2-2 from three, 6-7 from the line) to go with 1 board, 7 assists, 1 block, 5 turnovers and 2 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He flipped in an And-1 layup on a dive off the post to take the pass, he made the FT. Brain cramp, unforced turnover jumping to pass with no one around him. He drained a wing three on a kickout from Randle. He pushed out the steal and lobbed to Randle for the dunk. Swing pass to Lopez on the break for the open three. He backed a man down, drew a double and hit Nance under the hoop for the score. He stepped on the sideline on a kickout, turnover. He faked a pass, spun the other way and hit the turnaround. He missed a long pull-up jumper in transition, not a good look when we need ball movement. He charged in transition, pretty obvious one but a late whistle. Second Half: He drew the D on a drive and kicked to Lopez for the wide open three. He drew FTs on a drive off a great Randle screen (cut off Randle, however, instead of allowing him to roll), he made one FT. He was fouled on an elbow pull-up jumper, he made both FTs. Great help D to reject a shot on one end, then he cut off ball on the other and threw down over defenders after taking a pass. He swished a three trailing the break. Late read and his hit ahead was swiped. He curled to his right on a handoff and scored the layup over the D. He attacked he paint and threw it away. He was fouled in the paint for FTs, he made both. He spotted Nance under the hoop in early offense for a layup.

Lopez -- -- Like the activity defensively. He was blocking shots, deflecting passes, getting steals. That just makes a huge difference for the team in changing ends and getting easy scores. He finished with 4 steals and 2 blocks. He sank a couple of threes, but his best offensive plays was a left handed pass after dribble it up from halfcourt to Ingram backcutting his man for a dunk. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-10 shooting (2-7 from three) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 4 steals, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He dunked after his man went for a suicide steal in the post. He missed a tough fading bank on iso, not a good look. He missed a wing three. He knocked a lob loose to get a stop. Great help D rotation to swat a drive and control it. He was blocked on a layup attempt. He swatted another shot from behind. He drained a wing three on a swing pass from BI in transition (good job taking his time). He missed a sideline three on a kickout. He missed a two-for-one three. Second Half: He drained a wide open three. He missed a three from the same spot. He caused a couple Laker turnovers on poor passes in tight spaces. Great bounce pass to Ingram cutting baseline for the backdoor jam. Way short on a wing three.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Nice balance on some of his jumpers tonight, the result of better shot selection. He’d score a very efficient 14 points. I think the shot selection was on his mind so much that he went up to pass at the elbow once, saw the pass wasn’t there and didn’t even bother chucking it up at the rim. He just came down with it instead for the turnover, lol. I’m taking that as a good sign. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-8 shooting (3-5 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 steals, 1 turnover and no fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He overpassed on the break instead of trying to finish the layup, resulted in a turnover. He was blocked from behind on a pull-up jumper. He sank a corner three on a kickout in transition. He made a tech FT. He missed a wing three. He sank a pull-up wing jumper. He grabbed a horrible Hawks pass that went into the backcourt and took it for the breakaway dunk. He swished a wing three. Second Half: He went up in the air to pass and came right back down with it instead of shooting or doing anything. He missed an open three out of a timeout. He sank an open wing three off some poor D.

Kuzma -- -- Better game from him. He wasn’t hitting the three, but he wasn’t continuing to shoot them, either, which he’s been doing a bit too much of lately when he hasn’t had it going. He’d attack and get into spin moves or find players. I want more of that passing when he breaks down the D and he had a good mix of that tonight. His best pass, though, was a quick read and react to get the ball to JC cutting down the lane for a score. Love the speed he plays with, it just causes the D all kinds of trouble. We’re getting those three rookie lineups out there to start second and fourth quarters. Like seeing it for the future. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 6-12 shooting (0-3 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +15. The Action: He missed a step-back baseline jumper. He attacked and charged. He pushed it out with speed, changed directions on the Euro-step and hit the And-1 runner with 0.8 left, he missed the FT. He missed a drive in transition, but Lonzo cleaned it up. He was called for a moving screen. He rejected a layup on help D (great recovery). He pulled down a board, pushed it out and scored a layup. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He was called for a charge in the post (left hand coming away from the body against a guard). He missed a wing three. He attacked middle, spun back and missed the short one off the glass. He hit a jumphook working the post. He lowered his head, attacked and drew FTs, he made both. He attacked off the three line, spun and hit the short one in the middle of the paint. Great read with a quick-fire pass to JC cutting down the lane for a layup. He cut from the corner, took the pass and scored a layup. He missed a wing three. He attacked, spun and fed Nance in the interior for the score. He rattled in a long wing jumper.

Clarkson -- -- Excellent first half by the bench, with JC leading the way with 10 points on 4-4 shooting. He was a +17 in his 9 minutes in the first half. The shot just looked pure tonight. He had him playing more of the SG with Lonzo out there at PG. That helps JC a lot. Don’t like these Nance at C situations, but do like the backcourt. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-10 shooting (3-4 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal and no fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He sank a long wing jumper off the excellent Nance screen. He sank a wing three off the Nance screen. He faked off the three line in transition, attacked and scored the hanging layup over a big. He attacked from the wing, took contact, hung and hit the And-1 baseline runner, he made the FT. He kicked cross court to Lonzo for a three on the break. Bad lob in transition to blow a layup opportunity. Second Half: He missed a running one-hander off the glass at the buzzer. He scored a layup on a cut down the lane that Kuzma hit him on. He drained a wing three. He missed a pull-up at the FT line. He swished a wing three. He missed another a few seconds later.

Nance -- -- Some nice screens tonight to free up JC for scores. I think he delivers the hardest screens on the team. Scoring-wise we’re looking to set him up for lobs and he had a few tonight, including a nice over-the-head finish on one. All his scores were near the rim off good passes. We had him at the backup C again, but this is the Hawks. Still not please with it even though they did destroy the Hawks tonight. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 6-6 shooting (1-3 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +19. The Action: He hit a jumphook left alone under the hoop. He was fouled on a lob for FTs, he made one. He shed a defender on the long pass in transition and dunked. Second Half: He scored an And-1 layup in early offense when the D didn’t match up cleanly, he missed the FT. He reversed when Ingram found him open under the hoop. He finished a tough lob over his head to start the fourth. He came down with a lob and was stripped. Nice help recovery to block a layup. He scored off the interior feed from Kuzma.

Hart -- -- Strong, steady game from Josh. He sank a couple of threes and got out in transition for scores. We played him at the SF with Zo and JC at the guard spots. Subtle change the last couple games as we’ve buried Brewer in the rotation. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-7 shooting (2-3 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 blocks in 20 minutes. He was a +17. The Action: He grabbed a board and found Larry on the hit ahead for the dunk. He let a pass go out of bounds thinking it was for someone else. Second Half: He missed a corner three. He got out on the break and Lonzo fed him for the dunk. He drew FTs on a long outlet from Lonzo that hit him in stride, he made both. He was blocked out of bounds in transition. Way short on a turnaround trying to post up a bigger player. He attacked and hit Kuzma cutting for a layup. He stepped back on a kickout and drained the corner three. He swiped a handoff and took it the distance for a layup. He tried to force a pass between defenders, turnover. He drained a three straight away.

Brewer -- -- He didn’t get in until 2:53 in the fourth. If the Lakers coughed up a lead and things got close to start the fourth, that might have spelled the end of his consecutive game streak. I think Luke is sending the signal in the past couple of games that the streak might be coming to an end. We’ll see. The streak is 316. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 1 board and 1 steal in 3 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He swiped a ball in the backcourt. He reversed off the cut when Julius feed him baseline.

Ennis -- -- Lonzo would play about half of the quarter on his first stint, then Ennis would come in. Lonzo then returned to start the next quarter. Ennis looked like he might be overmatched in this one, but he had a couple moments defensively, especially on help situations when we switched. He sank a three, which has been much needed from him. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-1 shooting from three to go with 2 boards, 4 assits, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and no fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He sank a corner three on a kickout. Great help D rotation to swipe a return pass. Second Half: Trapped on the sideline for a turnover. He blocked a drive. Another good challenge on a drive to get a stop.

Bryant -- -- He came in with a minute left. Should have been in there with more time left as we weren’t coughing up that big a lead with 3 minutes left. The Stats: He had 1 board in 1 minute. He was a +1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Zubac -- -- Garbage time but we only brought him in with a minute left. I figure with Bogut out, we’d see more of our two young bigs, but we’ll see. Luke loves his Nance at C unit. Not sure why they didn’t come in with 3 minutes left. The Stats: He didn’t shoot or score in 1 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Walton -- -- The Lakers quickly fell behind 10-2 just 9:22 into the game. Luke called a timeout… They cut it to three when the timeout came midway through the quarter… Ennis in for Ball out of that… They were tied when Randle, Lopez and KCP sat for Nance, JC and Kuzma… God job playing with pace in the quarter. Starts at the defensive end… The Lakers led 29-27 after the first quarter… He started the Nance, Kuzma, Hart, JC, Ball lineup… They quickly pushed out to a 10-point lead to force a timeout… They stretched it to 15 to force another timeout. Transition killing the Hawks. (A 26-0 advantage on the break for the Lakers)… Luke called a timeout up 18 when we allowed an easy bucket… He brought in Randle, Ingram and KCP for JC, Nance and Hart… Another timeout shortly later up 14, ball movement on offense not good… Ennis in for Ball, Lopez in, as well… The Lakers led 66-48 at the half… They started to extend the lead, then the turnovers picked up and Luke called a timeout up 17… He sat Randle, Lopez and Ball for Kuzma, Nance and Ennis… JC in for KCP, same lead… Brought Hart in for Kuzma for the final possession or so. Could have brought in Brewer here… Lakers gave the Hawks just enough daylight not to give up… The Lakers led 96-80 heading into the fourth. Try to win the first few minutes of the fourth… He started a Nance, Kuzma, Hart, JC, Ball lineup. No Brewer yet… They extended it to 19 points getting out on the break again and forced a timeout… The Lakers pushed it to 23 points, then gave up a three with 4:53 left and Luke called the timeout… Randle and Brewer in with 3 minutes left up 19. Why Randle? Why not our deep bench bigs? Again, weird stuff with Luke and Randle… Luke brought in Zu and Bryant with a minute left. Sigh… The Lakers shot 56% for the game, including 44% from three (16-36)…

Last night's game was a proof that early on in games we need a rim protector like Lopez at our Center spot. We can't go small ball all the time, that's death.

If we fail on getting Cousins, it'd be nice to retain Brook on a discount, even if with all the shortcomings. It's not like that are many better C's available out there.

Finally defense was active and the ball moved on offense. Only saw 2 real bone headed turnovers (KCP, BI).

Fun to watch.

Your discussion tacitly ask the question what kind of physically gifted player is Randle and is he a max player for the Lakers

Thanks DB! Good to see a win again!

I still worry that Luke's a bit tone deaf when it comes to how best to use a 'death lineup' of small players, how long it takes on the playing floor to go from forcing the tempo and causing problems for the other team to simply being undersized and over matched. I'd love to see Zubac and TBryant get a little more game time and Luke mix it up a bit more at C.

Good to see Ball hitting 3's. Good to see KCP is reeling it in on shot selection. Ingram too for that matter. I hope BI gets better at reads when he has the ball, looks to me like he's headed in the right direction. And 6 for 7 on free throws? From Ingram? That' s great for him! Do that against some good teams please!!

Again, it's good to see a win. I hope we see another one sometime soon.
