The Favors idea is interesting, I have been mentioning him for a while, and he also has a large expiring deal.

Good read EP...

Pelinka & Magic have their work cut out for them. Saying goodbye to to JC and Randle will be a little easier for me than Nance. Hopefully they do something sooner than later.

Eric, question on this part in your article.

Quote:
Noel's full rights wouldn't transfer in trade; the Lakers would need to use cap room to re-sign him to a deal larger than $5 million.

Didn't Noel take a QO (as opposed to Dallas or the 76ers not picking up his team option which would limit what he could make if he stayed with the incumbent team)?

Theoretically, if the team traded for Noel, don't they get his Bird rights and can sign him over the cap (with something like a 8-9m cap hold)?

The Noel - Dallas situation is similar to the Monroe - Detroit situation a few years ago.

Agent: Pistons' Greg Monroe 'does not want a trade'

Quote:

Detroit Pistons big man Greg Monroe has been the subject of rumors for what feels like forever. There was speculation he could be traded before hitting restricted free agency last summer, and there was talk he might do a sign-and-trade that offseason. Instead, he signed the one-year qualifying offer to stay in Detroit, and he'll be be an unrestricted free agent this coming July. A recent report from The Sporting News indicated he'd like to be moved elsewhere before then, but Monroe denied it. His agent, David Falk, has now denied it too. From USA Today's Jeff Zillgitt:

"He made a commitment to Stan (Van Gundy) when he took the qualifying offer that he would work as hard as he could and help the team as best that he could and he would keep his mind open and at the end of the season, he would evaluate all of his options," Falk said. "That was his plan in July, and that's his plan in December and that will probably be his plan in February and will be his plan when the season ends."...

...If Monroe plays out the season, Detroit will keep his Bird rights, which means he could conceivably make his way to a capped-out team via sign-and-trade. If he is involved in a deal this year, he loses those Bird rights. That's a result of him signing that qualifying offer, which also means that any in-season trade would be subject to his approval. While it's not out of the question that Monroe would agree to a deal, he "is not enamored about the idea of joining a team mid-season, without a training camp to learn a new system," according to USA Today

101. When can't a player be traded? Can players be given "no-trade" clauses in their contracts?

Quote:

If a player with a negotiated no-trade clause consents to a trade and is traded, his no-trade clause remains in effect with his new team.

There are two additional circumstances in which a trade requires the player's consent:

* When the player is playing under a one-year contract (excluding any option year) and will have Larry Bird or Early Bird rights at the end of the season. This includes first round draft picks following their fourth (option) season, who accept their team's qualifying offer for their fifth season. When the player consents to such a trade, his Larry Bird/Early Bird rights are not traded with him, and instead becomes a Non-Bird free agent3. The player's consent is also required for any subsequent trades that season.

* For one year after exercising the right of first refusal to keep a restricted free agent. The player must consent to a trade to any team, although he cannot be traded to the team that signed him to the offer sheet.

Would that lessen the desire considering if we had his bird rights it would have been easier to keep him?

Any idea if Bazemore would okay a trade to the Lakers or is he still bitter about the team not giving him a extension? Let’s remember that was with the previous regime... maybe Clarkson and fillers for Bazemore?

So trading for him is completely useless under the two max plan unless he takes the room exception for two seasons (Early Bird).

Great.

The fact that we are bowing to Rich Paul, and the chances of LBJ slip each day (just an educated guess), pretty sad picture to see our FO taking that position.

Trading Jules to add another Rich Paul client while dumping two Mintz clients to get Mintz's prized client. I mean what's going on here?

But his cap hold remains around $8M?

Hmm, if we spend our actual cap space, wouldn't it make little difference b/c we would need actual cap space to sign him? So if it's 8m cap hold, that's functionally what we would pay him (assuming we sign 2 max players or use the cap space up accounting for the 8m cap hold).

Is he a room exception guy? I doubt it.

Yeah, it was a silly question since the Lakers wouldn't have his Bird Rights anyway. Trading for him offers no value under the two max plan unless he's a room exception guy, as you note, which seems unlikely.

That makes me worried that trading for Noel is the plan.

Yeah, trading for Noel means: 1) we may PAY him next summer, or 2) we're just shuffling chairs on the Titanic and praying that Rich Paul/LBJ won't sink the boat in July 2018.

It appears that his cap hold with Dallas would be just under $8 million.

37. How much do free agents count toward team salary?

Quote:

Larry Bird, not coming off rookie scale contract Below the average salary1 190% of his previous salary2

$4,187,599 * 190% = $7,956,438

If he would be traded during the season and have his Bird Rights extinguished, then his cap hold should reflect that change.

Quote:

Non-Bird Any 120% of his previous salary2

$4,187,599 * 120% = $5,025,119

that cap hold of 5 mil, just maybe, would be inviting to the Lakers
to keep him as insurance during the 2018 free agency period. plus, given the kcp plan, maybe noel ups on a cheap one year if he has a guarentee he's the starting center.
without lopez or cousins, there may not be a better option.

Bad ideas to dump young talent primary for salary relief.

That mindset will keep you at the bottom of the heap.

If the two max free agents are the goal, you still have to determine how realistic that is ... And by realistic find out which two and how interested they are really. You won't know this til the summer unless you've been tampering.

Dumping Randle, Clarkson, Nance is not as good as dumping Deng. So if Deng isn't in play, i wouldnt make any of those deals. Like really who would take Deng at this point? Lakers aren't doing his value any favors by DNPing him.
