Streaking… With Ball and Lopez returning to the lineup, the Lakers have returned to the win column. The biggest losing streak of the season has now flipped into the longest winning streak with three straight.

The Laker youth lead the way tonight.

It started with a 17-0 run by the Lakers bench between quarters to help them to a 19-point lead at one point in the first half. They weren’t giving up anything easy and forced the Spurs into turnovers all night.

In the second half, they got into passing lanes to get out on the break. They had 15 steals in the game with Ball and KCP combining for 9 of them.

“When we’re playing defense like that, flying all over and scrambling, we’re really good,” Nance said.

Nance anchored the D tonight, but also had some impact on the offensive glass as well as throwing down the best lob dunk of the year.

Ingram and Ball led the Lakers scoring output as the two combined for 44 points in the 93-81 win over the undermanned Spurs.

“That was a pathetic performance by our team, and a lot of the reason for it was the way the Lakers played, “Popovich said afterward. “They were very physical, much more physical than we were. Their desire was at a totally different level than ours was.”

Ball -- -- “He’s the guy that kind of gets the whole thing moving,” Luke said. He scored 11 points in the first half on 4-4 shooting, hitting all three of his threes in the half. He and Ingram combined for 29 of the Lakers 49 in the half. Our youngest kids dominating. Lonzo sank four threes tonight and orchestrated the offense well. Once again, he filled up the stat sheet in multiple categories. (A few too many turnovers again, although I might put one or two on teammates.) Defensively, he had 4 steals with that superb anticipation. He’s an amazingly good defender for a rookie and is only going to get better. That length comes to play on the glass, on challenges and getting into the passing lanes. “We said we’ve got to get back to playing defense,” Lonzo said of the team’s mindset on that end of the floor. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-11 shooting (4-7 from three) to go with 10 boards (4 offensive), 6 assists, 4 steals, 5 turnovers and 1 foul in 36 minutes. He was a +17. The Action: Nice challenge to force a miss in the paint. He sank a three straight away off a swing pass. He got into the paint with speed and hit Nance for the dunk. He hit Kuzma cross court for an open three. Too long to get a kickout to a man in transition and it was picked off. He dunked on the leak out when JC threw it down court to him. He sank a wing three on a kickout. Great close out and recover to force a kickout and turnover. He drained a wing three on a kickout. He attacked and kicked to Ingram for the three. He swiped a pass to ignite a break. Second Half: His bounce pass was picked off (not a great angle). No passing lane in transition and he threw it away in the paint. He missed a wing three on a kickout. Steal but he couldn’t get control of it and threw it away. He dunked off a split play with KCP, taking the pass under the hoop when left alone. He hit KCP for an And-1 three. He missed a wing three, wide open. He attacked, tucked the ball in and scooped in a finger roll layup. He missed a wing three. He deflected a pass to force a shotclock violation. He drained a big three with 3 minute left on the kickout. He swiped ball on a kickout shortly later.

Randle -- -- Some foul trouble had him sidelined early and scoreless in the first half in 12 minutes. He struggled to get any kind of rhythm going in this game, even missing point-blank layups or finishes on the break. Luke didn’t have a hard decision to sit him down with Nance balling and Randle going 0-6. The rare really bad game from Randle tonight. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-6 shooting to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -17. The Action: He attacked right and missed the short bank. He got tapped on a wing midrange jumper that circled down then out. Lazy perimeter pass and it was stolen for a score. He traveled not wanting to take the baseline jumper. He got baited into his third foul on an up-fake in the perimeter and had to sit with 1:30 left. Second Half: He setup Lopez for FTs on a drive and dish (late to realize he was wide open). He was stripped, got it back and choked a point-blank layup. He blew a score on the break. He attacked but no touch on the finish and missed.

Ingram -- -- Superb game from BI. “We want Brandon to play the game as it comes to him,” Luke said. “There are some people that are straight scorers. Brandon is not one of them. He’s a player that can score a lot but he’s also a very good playmaker. The way he can handle on the pick and rolls, his vision on the court, we want him taking what the defense gives him.” It’s that taking what the defense gives him that’s important to his success right now. Lonzo sees him maybe a little differently. “He’s our go to scorer,” Lonzo said. Ingram looked like it at times tonight as he had 18 points in the first half to lead both teams. He had that perimeter game going from both three and midrange. He got into the paint for some finishes around the rim, including a step through and finger roll. Should have had a couple more points but that freethrow shooting is an issue. Very balanced game from him. Early in the season he was forcing it into the paint again and again, often to the detriment of the team and ball movement. Now, we see him getting into that midrange when the drive isn’t there or not hesitating to knock down threes when passed to. The Stats: He scored 26 points on 11-21 shooting (2-5 from three, 2-5 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and no fouls in 37 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He sank a wing pull-up jumper. He faced up at the elbow on a switch and swished the jumper. He missed a forced midrange pull-up. He missed a baseline pull-up in early offense. He attacked off the three line in early offense, took contact and scored the And-1, he missed the FT. He missed a wing three. He sank a three straight away. He hesitated and missed a 12-footer. He missed a wing three. He attacked and kicked to Ball for three. He missed a forced wing jumper. He was fouled on a throwdown attempt, he made both FTs. He airballed a three (after letting the air out of the ball with too much dribbling that possession). He swished a corner three on a kickout. He sank an easy elbow jumper coming off a nice Nance screen. Another easy pull-up jumper at the FT line off a Nance screen. Second Half: He up-faked, attacked and somehow scored high over the help D. He missed a forced elbow jumper. He attacked and threw it away into a shooter’s feet, turnover. Pretty face-up swing through to the baseline for a layup. He missed a pull-up at the FT line. He up-faked, stepped-through and finger rolled in a layup. He faced up and swished a baseline jumper. He missed a jumper on iso. He attacked off the high screen and drew FTs, he missed both.

Lopez -- -- The stats don’t look great in this game, but the game was a little better than it showed. His 3 blocks were definitely felt as he had a good presence on D. Lakers locked the Spurs down for 15 points in that first quarter. Foul trouble limited him a little, but our bench just getting after it was a bigger reason for the lack of minutes despite his poor scoring. I don’t think there would have been much problem sticking him back in down the stretch because he was defending well. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-5 shooting (1-4 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 blocks, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He sank a three on a kickout for the Lakers first score. He missed a three next time down, not as good a look. Way short on an open three. He gave up a lob. He missed a jumphook in the post. Moving screen call, turnover. Weak third foul call trying to get post position. Second Half: He drew FTs on an interior feed, he made one. Way short on an open wing three. Good verticality to deny a drive. He swatted a drive on help D.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He was jumping the passing lanes like he was shot out of a cannon tonight. Those turned into quick counterstrikes and scores. Huge plays, especially when the Spurs were trying to make a run. Strong third quarter on both ends by KCP. He was disruptive on D for steals that quarter, and then scored 8 points on the other end. He’d finish with 5 steals on the night, which made his 10-point game feel like 20. Just a big impact. A couple bonehead shots/plays in this one, but they didn’t hurt his game because of his activity on D. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-10 shooting (2-6 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 5 steals, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He missed a corner three to start the game. He deflected a pass to get a stop. He missed a three in transition. He had the ball stripped off him for a turnover out of a timeout. Second Half: He missed a long wing jumper out of a timeout. He took his eyes off a kickout and it went out of bounds. He swished a three on a kickout from Nance. He swiped a kickout and took it for a dunk out of a timeout. He stripped Aldridge on help D. He missed a pull-up midrange and three on the same possession. He sank an And-1 wing three after recovering a loose ball and getting it back, he missed the FT. He didn’t hit rim on a rushed three in transition just after returning. He jumped a passing lane to swipe a skip pass and took it for a dunk. He lobbed to Nance on the break, a little too high, but Nance got it and threw down. Dumb crossover in early offense instead of running clock and it was stolen for a layup the other way.

Kuzma -- -- When the shot isn’t falling, you want to see other things from him. Tonight, he was active on D and moving the ball excellently on O. Glad to see him really exploring his passing game. He had some highlight reel feeds tonight and they’d usually end up in an easy score for teammates. He’s just so quick, his gravity off drives pulls defenders. “Been playing that way the past couple of games and we got some wins. It works,” Kuzma said. Defensively, some good moments on the glass on that end of the floor and in help situations. He said he’s been watching a lot of film to help him be in the right spot on that end of the floor. With his mobility that’s key. He needs fast reads to match his fast footspeed and he’s only going to get more and more disruptive. Good job by him and Nance tonight having to go up against a couple of bigger front court players down the stretch. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-12 shooting (2-9 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals and no fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +26. The Action: He missed a three straight away. He swiped a pass and ignited the break, drawing FTs on the return pass, he made both. He missed a step-back three. He missed another step-back three on a busted set. He deflected a pass away fronting Pau in the paint to get a stop. Cross-court feed to Hart for the three. He couldn’t finish a tough layup in transition. He sank a wing three. Nice help D to force a travel. He up-faked, drew the D and kicked to Lonzo for three. He missed a three in early offense. Second Half: He missed a wing three after a nice passing sequence between him and Ball. He found Lonzo open under the hoop off a split play for a dunk. He swished a wing jumper up against the shotclock. He crossed over Pau, attacked right, drew Larry’s man then whipped it to him for the dunk. He faced up and swished a wing three. He was blocked on a drive. He missed a corner three on an inbounds on the same possession. He attacked from the corner and fed Nance under the hoop for FTs.

Clarkson -- -- Not much impact from the bench tonight and Luke limited his minutes. We could have used a little more of his penetration or running the two-man game because his perimeter shot wasn’t there and the offense sputtered anytime Lonzo sat for Ennis. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-8 shooting (0-3 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 turnover in 14 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He missed a three. Wild drive but Nance cleaned it up. He missed a tip-in. He was fouled on a pushout in transition with 4 seconds left for FTs, he made one. He attacked off the steal and scored the layup on the break. He hit a jumphook in transition a few seconds later off another Spur turnover (that forced a timeout). He missed a wing three. He threw a pass away on the break. He tracked down a loose ball and fired it down court to Ball for a dunk. Second Half: He airballed a wing three.

Nance -- -- Luke said he might have been the MVP of this one. Hard to disagree with that even with Ingram’s 26. Larry killed it tonight. “Just trying to take command of our defense,” Larry said. He had Staples buzzing with a soaring alley-oop dunk after stealing the ball to ignite the break. He had to stretch out behind his hand to get that one and hammer. Good work on the offensive glass. That helped the Lakers to some second chance points (including a couple of threes and a tip-in). That offensive glass always seems like a barometer for how active he’s going to be in a game and you could see it right out of the gates. He was bringing it tonight. Again, he was called for a couple moving screens, but delivered some strong ones after that. Ingram was freed up for some easy looks at the FT line off those. Not sure what’s going on with all the moving screens recently. Nance was a +18 at the half, playing both PF and C (more C). He helped give the Lakers some much needed energy at PF in the third. Defensively, I love it when he can get into the patting lanes and disrupt, he had a couple nice sequences of that. His lone block was a superb rejection of Pau out of bounds on help D. Good job dealing with Aldridge when matched up, but we also sent a lot of help and the team D was playing on a string tonight. “When five guys are in sync like that moving defensively, it just seems to happen,” Nance said. “We had high hands on the ball. We had KCP cutting through passing lines. We were just making their catches tough whether at the elbow or the post.” One of his best games of the year and a +29 while out there. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 6-9 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 10 boards (5 offensive), 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +29. The Action: Illegal screen, turnover. His wing jumper went down and out just like Randle’s for a miss. He got two offensive boards on one possession and that led to a Laker three. He cleaned up a Clarkson missed drive for a score. He dunked off the drive and dish form Lonzo. Second Half: He battled for an offensive board and kicked it out to KCP for a three. The D sagged off him and he hit the wing jumper. He took the high entry pass, powered up and dunked. Another moving screen call. He dunked off the drive and dish from Kuzma. He missed a wing jumper. He swiped a ball. He jumped a passing lane, gave it up and KCP lobbed high for Nance to get it for the monster oop. Great help D to reject Pau out of bounds. He drew FTs on the drive and dish from Kuzma, he made both. He couldn’t finish a dunk on the break on a three on one.

Hart -- -- Quietly outplayed our other bench guards tonight. Just steady minutes on both ends and sinking a couple of threes. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-3 shooting from three to go with 2 boards and 1 foul in 13 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He swished a corner three. He didn’t hit rim on a wing three. Second Half: He drained a three on a kickout.

Ennis -- -- Sketchy minutes when Lonzo sat in the second half. The offense lost its edge and missed Lonzo’s length and impact on D. We were a -5 in Ennis’s 12 minutes and a +17 in Lonzo’s. Just no impact when out there. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 board, 2 assists and 2 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: Nice blindside in the post to knock a ball loose. He missed a three on a kickout. Nearly gave up a layup getting backdoored at the buzzer. Second Half: He was blocked on a reverse but got it back.

Brewer -- -- He didn’t play in this one and the streak comes to an end at 317. Luke had a chance to put him in for the final minute and Brewer looked a little saddened that he didn’t get in. The signals were coming from Luke. Sorry to see it end, but at some point it can be counterproductive for the team. RIP Iron Man. The Stats: DNP – Coach’s Decision. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Walton -- -- We’re seeing that defense returning. Even if it’s against lesser teams or injured ones like tonight, the effort has picked up considerably. They are finding that identity again… Up by 2, he sat Lopez and Ball for Ennis and Kuzma midway through the first quarter… Randle picked up his second foul and we went to Nance at C early with 4:44 left up by 3… He brought in Clarkson with 3 minutes left for KCP, Lakers down 3 now… Spurs offense ground to a halt when Aldridge sat… The Lakers led 20-15 after the first quarter… He started the Nance, Kuzma, Hart, JC, Ball unit… Lakers pulled out to a 27-15 lead as their run stretched between quarters to 15-0, forcing a timeout… They forced more turnovers to get into transition and the Spurs took another timeout, Lakers up 16… Timeout up 15 to get our two bigs back in to counter the Spurs twin towers midway through the quarter. All starters back in here… Up 10, Luke took a timeout… Randle picked up his third foul and sat for Nance. Lopez picked up his third, as well, a little later but Luke kept him in to close the half… The Lakers led 49-38 at the half. The Lakers three rookies and Ingram had 37 of those points… The lead was quickly cut to 3 as the Lakers started turning the ball over… The Lakers trailed by 1 midway through the quarter and Luke called for his bench… Luke went small with Nance and Kiuzma against the Spurs bigs… Lakers countered with an 11-2 run forcing a timeout… Ennis in for Ball and JC in for Ingram with a minute left up 11. Poor final minute… The Lakers led 68-63 heading into the fourth… He started the Nance, Kuzma, Hart, JC, Ennis lineup… The lead was cut to 4 with 8 minutes left and he called a timeout… He brought in Lonzo and Ingram for JC and Ennis… KCP in for Hart, up 4… They extended to 10 with 4 minutes left on an 8-0 run. That eventually extended to a 13-0 run and Luke called a timeout maybe to slow them down a little and run clock down the stretch… Lonzo out for Ennis. No Brewer… The Spurs had 20 turnovers and the Lakers had 15 steals tonight…

Thanks DB. It’s becoming pretty clear that Ingram/Ball/Kuzma are the key core guys.

Also pretty clear how lonzo is ultra critical to team’s success. It’s a struggle sometimes without him.

Kudos to Luke for sitting Brick and Randle from midway in the 3rd onwards. Seemingly everytime they were on the floor, the Spurs were making runs. Good job limiting Clarkson and Ennis` minutes too.

Thanks, DB!

I did not see the game (yet), so the first impressions after T&R and highlights:
* lots of us longed for Randle to start (I certainly did), but his game has dropped as a starter (but we are winning, at that is more important).
* Lonzo was a steal away for 5*5, although the last 5 is not something to be proud of.
* A few games back the highlights were mostly a reel of plays by Kuz. I actually like that it has lot more variety now.
* Luke seems to go as Lonzo does.
* I wonder how much are these last wins influenced by other teams underestimating the Lakers? The D has certainly improved so it sure is not only that. Good to not be a pushover for a change.

Luke in the last five games (finally out of the big cry):

It was a good and needed win that showed how the Lakers can be effective

Even though the Spurs have key starters out (Kwahi, Parker and Green), the Spurs are obviously well-coached and run Pop's system effectively while being a good test for our young pups

When they impose their will (via their long and versatile players staring with Ball, Ingram, Kuzma and KCP) onto opposing teams, they will always be in games.

That is because the team's style of play is build around his strength. Get that rebound and run!

I believe we are among the elites when it comes to fast break points.

The Lakers have the fastest pace in the league and a league leading 20% of their offense comes in transition. Unfortunately they're not very efficient at transition offense - 6th worst in the NBA - which I blame almost entirely on KCP and Randle. So they get quantity if not always quality, but that's a good start for the Lonzo era.

I just wish that Luke would quit experimenting with the lineup. It's pretty obvious what lineup wins the most.

Hate to bag on any of our guys, but it just seems like when Randle and Clarkson are in there, we get pounded on by everyone.

I believe both these guys will be good additions elsewhere. Someplace where their skills are complimentary to other players, but neither of them can be in a position where they have to have all around skills and be able to truly make a difference. Neither of them can control the flow of the game.
