Win Streak…Continues… The Lakers started strong in this one, taking advantage of Randle’s size in the paint at the PF early to take an 11-point lead after the first quarter. An ankle twist would lose Brandon Ingram to injury after he was passing the ball well in that quarter.

Momentum shifted in the second quarter as we rode our bench much too long and also chilled the starters in the process. The bench would get burned badly again to start the fourth quarter as the team would fall back by 10 going scoreless.

The Lakers would bounce backing, taking the lead again with 4:40 left with scores by KCP, JC and Randle during this stretch. Clarkson would deliver again and again for the Lakers in crunch time in this one.

They would go up by 5 points with 1:25 left, but were unable to take the win in regulation. KCP missed a big freethrow and Julius Randle was stripped on a play set up for him in the final seconds.

Julius would get some redemption in overtime for that turnover and other with 48 seconds left in overtime. With Lonzo driving right on a mismatch, Randle took advantage of his size mismatch under the hoop to grab the missed shot and score with 18 seconds left to go up by 5.

The Lakers dominated the glass with 59 boards, none bigger than that one. They would hold on for the 107-101 win, stretching their win streak to four games and snapping the 14-game losing streak to the Mavs.

Ball -- -- Really a non-factor early on in this game. He was missing threes and not really imposing his game on the court. Didn’t like seeing that early in the fourth when we needed him to step up instead of defer. He pretty much let JC run things in crunch time as he clearly wasn’t feeling it. In overtime, we put him in the post for a couple possessions. He would hit JC for a three and score a layup himself on the other one. Tough to get this win without BI and Lonzo on top of his game, but they pulled it out. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-13 shooting (1-7 from three) to go with 7 boards, 7 assists, 1 steal and 1 foul in 43 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He missed a wing three in transition, way short. They went under the screen and he missed his next three, long. He challenged a three, leaked out, took the long outlet and scored a layup. He missed a tip-in. Turnover trying to hit KCP off a screen. He missed an open corner three. He missed a three on iso. Second Half: He hit Lopez for a three on the pick and pop. He sank a sideline three on a kickout. He probed off the screen and hit the step-back in the middle of the paint. He missed an open three at the top of the arc. He hit Kuzma rolling for the layup. He missed a three when the D sagged off. He defected a pass to ignite the break. Overtime: He posted up and kicked to JC for three. He posted up, spun baseline and scored the layup. He attacked on iso and missed a tough drive, but Randle got the board and scored.

Randle -- -- He had 10 points in the first quarter but only played 3 minutes in the second quarter. He got a longer run in the second half before sitting, then when Nance came up bloody, Luke subbed him back in midway through the fourth. That may have won the game for the Lakers right there. Luke was hesitant to run Randle/Kuzma in this one. It burned them in the first half not doing that, but we would close the game with those two n the court. Randle had a chance to win the game in regulation on an iso drive from the corner, but the help D was able to strip him. Luke wanted Randle to be able to attack going to his left across the lane, which is a solid idea. Unfortunately, probably with Lonzo not being a threat, the action up top didn’t occupy the help defense. Julius would get redemption in overtime. He’d score a huge putback when he Lonzo’s men switched. That would give the Lakers control with 18 seconds left. We let him iso a bit in this one against smaller players and he had a few turnovers in the process. He hasn’t been a dribble-heavy type of player this year. Dribbles per touch last year were 1.47, this year it’s 1.11. Fairly significant drop. With Barnes and other smaller defenders on him, we went to him for the post scores and more of that type of work than has been usual this season. Big numbers today. Glad he got redemption for that last-second turnover (and also a charge he was called for trying to create against the shotclock in the post in the final minute of OT). He also had a big stop against Barnes on iso, forcing him into an airball late in OT. He was still thinking about the couple scores Barnes got on him in regulation. Luke said that defense on Barnes was the best part of his game tonight despite the 23-15. Barnes had 17 on 21 shots. “I have really high expectations for the player he’s going to become in this league because of that, I’m on him a lot,” Luke said. “When he’s making mistakes that he’s trying and giving the effort to do the right thing, I’m totally okay with it.” By the way, some excellent screens by Randle today. That’s really improved this year. Rare bad one from Randle in the last one (and people immediately jumped on him for it), but strong response today. The Stats: He scored 23 points on 9-15 shooting (5-6 from the line) to go with 15 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 7 turnovers and 5 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +12. The Action: He hit a jumphook across the middle of the lane on the post-up to start. He scored in the post backing his man down in early offense. He scored a layup in transition when the Mavs didn’t match up and BI found him. He didn’t protect the ball in the post and it was poked away as he backed a man down. He bullied his way over a smaller defender for a short one in the paint. He missed a jumphook. He overpowered another defender in the paint for the easy one. Back in, he got the ball in the post and drew FTs, he made both. He was called for a charge trying to drive on a face up. Poor post entry pass to give up a transition score (just telegraphed it and threw it in there too lazy). He missed a turnaround jumper on the baseline trying to beat the shotclock. Second Half: He found Hart open for the layup. He missed a turnaround in the paint. He missed a layup but we got it back. He threw it away in the post (no one cut for him when the double team came). He missed an open baseline jumper. He threw down a dunk trailing the break. Way off the mark on an outlet to Kuzma, turnover in transition. Deep position and he was fouled for FTs, he made both. He was fouled on a jumphook in the paint with a second on the shotclock, he made one. Great job running into a screen, then quickly moving on the roll to get open and JC found him for the dunk with 1:25 left. He attacked left, had a great look at a hanging layup but didn’t get it high enough and missed with 30 seconds left. Overtime: He bailed out the offense on a post-up to hit a tough baseline turnaround up against the shotclock. He forced Barnes into an airball on iso D and a shotclock violation. Up against the shotclock again and this time he was called for a charge in the post with 48 seconds left. He grabbed a missed Lonzo drive and powered up a score with 18 seconds left to go up 5.

Ingram -- -- Mild left ankle sprain so they pulled him in the first half. He is listed day to day. “We did tell him our freethrow percentage went up as a team without him out there,” Luke joked afterward. (Lakers shot 72% from the line.) Ingram was dishing the ball well to start this game. I thought it might be a huge night for him assist wise as he had 5 dimes early on. The eye test has been showing Ingram is not driving to try to score as much as he had been and is now passing much more. The data backs it up, as well, and it’s trending. In the first half of December he was at 12.5 drives per game and passing on 20%. So far in January he’s at 9.7 drives per game and he’s now passing 36% of the time. For the season, he leads the team on drives per game with 11.8 (JC and Lonzo are next with 8 each). That puts Ingram at third in the league for forwards, ahead of the Freak and LeBron with 11 (he doesn’t score at as high a clip as they do, of course). But you can see the shift in mentality a bit in that data. Hope he’s able to go in the next one. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-2 shooting to go with 6 boards, 5 assists and 1 foul in 14 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He sank a baseline jumper in the inbounds. He found Randle open in transition for a score. He sank a pull-up wing jumper over Dirk coming off the screen. He attacked and kicked to KCP for the open three. He wasn’t aware of the clock, shotclock violation. He hit Kuzma for the dunk in early offense after drawing a crowd on a push out.

Lopez -- -- Unable to take advantage of his size in this game. We tried. He just wasn’t imposing himself against the smaller defenders. I think in one play he had Dirk on him a couple feet from the hoop and settled for a turnaround fade and missed. Just disappointing. He would sink a couple of threes and shoot six of them in his 17 minutes, but he took himself out of this one. Got to play smart and impose your advantages. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-11 shooting (2-6 from three) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 foul in 17 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed an open three on a kickout. He missed a jumphook over Dirk in the post. He was stripped, got it back and hit the short one. He missed a fade over a smaller man in the post. Second Half: He missed a fade from a couple feet out instead of going up strong. He sank a three on the pick and pop. He missed a three trailing the break. He missed a wing three out of a timeout, way short. Same spot and he swished the three this time. He fired and missed another three trailing the break. He hit Randle trailing the break for the dunk.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Underrated game from KCP in this one. He scored 17 on 5-8 shooting and led the team with the +16. His scoring stretch on jumpers in the fourth quarter helped the Laker recover from that 10-point deficit. Of course, what will tarnish this game was the missed FTs in regulation and OT. “Get more freethrows in and just get ready for that moment again because it might come,” he said. Overtime didn’t cost them, but the 1-2 from the line with 11.6 left hurt. The Stats: He scored The Action: He moved in off the three line on the fly by and hit the pull-up. He missed a 17-footer off a screen. He swished a three on the kickout from BI. He missed an elbow pull-up jumper. He made a tech FT. He missed a corner three. Second Half: Nice challenge on a drive on iso to get a stop. He attacked off the catch and drew FTs, he made one. He iso’d and swished an And-1 step-back midrange jumper, he made the FT. He sank a pull-up 17-footer off the Randle screen. He sank a big three with 2:49 left on a kickout. He was fouled with 11.6 left intentionally on the inbounds, he made just one. Overtime: He was fouled with 8.9 left on an inbounds, he made one.

Kuzma -- -- He started his scoring around the rim in this one and slowly moved out to the perimeter as the game went along. He made his first six shots. He didn’t settle for the three ball at a high clip and was efficient and effective today. His scoring around the rim with his left and right hand on the move was a thing of beauty. He’s just got so many skills he can go to that he’s tough to cover. He got his tenth double-double of the season. “I feel like I’m back now,” Kuzma said. Some minutes reduction, a day off from practice and he’s heating back up again. He was strong again defensively and credited that to watching tape a lot more. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 8-13 shooting (1-2 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in in 36 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He cut in transition to backdoor a defender, take the pass and dunk. Great challenge on a skip pass to Dirk to force a brick from three. He sank an elbow turnaround after grabbing an offensive board. Quick attack, he took contact but no whistle and missed. Great outlet to Lonzo leaking out for the layup. He attacked across the lane and quickly pulled up for the short one. Offensive foul as he shed a guard with an offhand. He up-faked and hit the left-handed jumphook. Rim run and he drew FTs under the hoop. He had 9 points on 4-4 shooting in the first half. Second Half: He scored a layup off the screen-roll with Lonzo. He attacked left, stopped, spun right and hit the jumphook. He missed a three on the pick and pop. He missed a pull-up wing jumper. He missed a jumper from the top of the arc. He pushed out the steal and fed JC for the layup. He swished a three on a kickout. He hit a floater on a Euro-step in transition. He couldn’t finish a drive right. Overtime: He missed an elbow jumper.

Clarkson -- -- “JC got back cooking doing what he does and it was huge,” Randle said. It may have been the last OT game where I wrote here it would be nice if Clarkson was playing better at end of quarter situations because we could really use him as a clutch scorer in the crunch time. He got the opportunity today, I think for the first time all season. It wasn’t like he was lighting things up, either, early on. We had no Ingram. Hart had foul trouble. Ball was MIA offensively. So we kind of backed into him in that role by default. He caught fire down the stretch, working the screens for scores off pull-ups and mismatches. (Big pass to Randle, too, rolling for the score with 1:25 left in regulation.) The offense wasn’t pretty as we would get a little stagnant as we don’t have a tremendous amount of experience with Lonzo deferring to JC. But he’s a tough shot maker and sometimes you need that on the court in crunch time. Maybe in a game like this, you take a few plays away and it helps the team down the stretch in close ones in the future. Assuming JC is still on the team then. He had 13 points in the fourth and OT. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 9-18 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 3 boards, 4 assists, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He iso’d and hit the turnaround over Yogi. He attacked and missed a leaner. Nice challenge on Dirk to force a miss on a switch. He banked in a pull-up straight away, lucky. He missed a wing three. He up-faked, attacked off the three line and scored a layup. He missed a baseline turnaround on iso with the shotclock about to expire. He missed a 3-footer he should have had. He attacked, lost the handle and threw it away. Second Half: Awful shot selection trying to draw contact on a pull-up jumper, brick instead. He missed a drive. He barely hit rim on a pull-up jumper out of a timeout. Kuzma hit him filling the lane for the layup. Lucky he wasn’t called for a travel in the paint and kicked to Kuzma for a three. He attacked and bullied his way to a layup. Unforced error on a carry before a perimeter pass, uggh. Not close on a wing three. He iso’d, pounded the dribble and swished a big elbow pull-up jumper with 2 minute left. He attacked off the Randle screen and whipped it to the rolling Julius for a big score with 1:25 left next time down. He got a switch, iso’d and swished the big 20-footer over the big with 1 minute left. Overtime: He sank a three coming off a screen to take the kickout from Lonzo to start the fourth. He snaked off the high screen and hit the pull-up at the FT line. He missed a three with 1:16 left.

Nance -- -- The Lakers were down 4 when he got popped with an elbow to cut him midway through the fourth. It wasn’t a great game from Larry (as you can see by the lack of notes). But Luke might have let him finish because the team was starting to claw their way back after giving up a 10-point lead to open the fourth. Luke seemed reluctant to run Kuzma/Randle together. So the injury to Nance came to play in this one. Really not much going on with Nance in this one. He had the team low -6. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-6 shooting to go with 7 boards (3 offensive) and 4 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He scored easily with guard matching up on him in transition. He missed a baseline jumper. Second Half: He kept an offensive board alive. He missed a tough tip. He choked a point-blank jumphook over Dirk (dunk that). He couldn’t box out his man and fouled.

Hart -- -- He picked up three fouls in the first half and that limited his time despite Ingram getting the injury. We started him in the second half, but that fourth foul had him going back to the bench for Brewer after a few minutes. Quick whistles for him tonight. From there, we’d go with the trio of Lonzo, KCP and JC. Luke would occasionally sub out JC for Hart on defensive possessions. Right move…but think about that for a second – quite a compliment for a rookie. But also when we needed one stop, we had Lonzo, Kuzma and Hart all out there on the court at the same time. That’s crazy if you step back and think about it. Just bodes very, very well for our defense in the future with our young guys. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He was called for a travel at the three line. He smothered a guard on a drive to force a miss. Great read on help D to easily swipe a lob pass. He missed a three in transition on the other end. Second Half: He scored a layup when Randle found him open under the hoop. He kept an offensive board alive in a crowd. Picked up his fourth and sat. Overtime: Up high for a defensive board with 9.8 left to get the stop.

Ennis -- -- Awful start to the fourth quarter by him. Teams just dare him to shoot and it throws off everything when he’s not a threat. Good to see JC step up in this one. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-6 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 10 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He missed a pull-up at the FT line. He missed a three on a kickout. He sank a three when the D went under the screen. He missed a 70-foot heave at the buzzer. Second Half: He attacked and missed a lefty layup. He airballed a short pull-up jumper, got to hit those. He was called for an offensive foul on a drive.

Brewer -- -- With the injuries and fouls, he got to play again tonight. Luke started Hart in the second half. Probably see that in the next one if Ingram doesn’t play. Corey scored a couple points on FTs and was a bit foul prone himself today. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 0-1 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 4 fouls in 9 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He found Randle with deep position for FTs. He drew FTs on an off-ball cut, he made both. He got a moving screen call while turning up the pressure on D. He missed a hook across the lane.

Walton -- -- The Mavs have the second highest percentage of points coming from three shooting (behind the Rockets), so the Lakers would need to defend the three line well today. The Mavs hit threes right from the start, while the Lakers scored in the paint and midrange for an early lead as they tried to use their size advantage… Kuzma and Ennis in for Lopez and Ball with the Lakers up 8 with 5 minutes to go… Randle beasting defenders in the paint… The Lakers were up 23-15 when Randle sat for Nance with 3 minutes left. Randle had 10 of those points… The Lakers led 31-20 after the first quarter… He started the Nance, Kuzma, Hart, JC, Ennis lineup. No Ball right here… Lonzo in shortly later with the lead at 11 still… Hart picked up some fouls and had to sit for Ingram with 7 minutes left, Lakers up 6. Not sure why we aren’t going back to Randle here. Frustrating to watch as they are getting reeled in… Luke called a timeout up just 4 with 6:22 when he went back to the starters with JC instead of KCP… Down 6 with 3 minutes left, Luke called another timeout. Momentum shifted… Luke sat Randle and Lopez for Nance and Kuzma out of that. No Ingram with an ankle sprain. No thought of going with Julius/Kuzma… The Lakers trailed 52-46 at the half… Hart into the starting lineup for Ingram in the second half… Luke called a timeout down 7 and was yapping at the Mavs Matthews... Hart picked up his fourth and Brewer came in for him down 4 with 6 minutes left… Timeout Mavs, Lakers down 2. Kuzma in for Lopez out of that… Nance, Kuzma, Brewer, JC, Ennis in now with 1:48, Lakers down 2… The Lakers trailed 73-70 heading into the fourth… Bad stretch here. Nance, Kuzma, Brewer, JC, Ennis. This unit looks dead… Lonzo in for Ennis… Lakers down 10 when the timeout came… KCP in for Brewer… They trimmed it to 5 and forced a timeout… Nance sat with 5:56 left getting bloodied, so Randle returned down 4… Some scores by KCP, JC and Randle in the crunch time as the team got stops on D… The Lakers took back a 5-point lead and force a timeout with 1:25 left. Big stop needed here, but they fouled… Lakers up 2 with 11.9 left after KCP made just one FT. They need one stop… He brought in Hart for JC… They gave up a score with 5.9 left. Tie game… JC back in for Hart. Ball given to Randle who was stripped on iso by the help D trying to attack across the lane to his strong hand… Overtime: Same unit to start the OT. Randle, Kuzma, Ball, KCP and JC… They pulled out to a 5-point lead with 2 minutes left. They got a stop, but JC missed a three there. We got another stop. Right here might have been a great time for a timeout to draw up a big play and ice the game with 50 seconds left. Instead, Randle was called for a charge in the post trying to create against the shotclock when the offense stalled out… Randle with a big putback score with 18 seconds left up by 5… Hart in for JC again. Got the board, fouled and JC back in for him…

Josh Hart needs more minutes but a terrific win...especially with Ingram going down. Ju and JC were just terrific! Ju made late game ISOs that had me pulling out my hair BUT he did so much good that I just pray he learns from his mistakes and gets even better!

Missed the game; thanks DB! I hope Ingram's ankle heals up quickly and he does't miss too much time.

Felt the late offensive foul called on Randle was really soft...obvious flop, but unfortunately I think Randle now has a deserved rep with refs (and fans) for being out of control when going to the basket.

Also, KCP has played a lot better since the end of his stay at Seal Beach. Ultimately, having to go back to jail (even a relatively nice one) every night can't be conducive to performing as a professional sportsman...hopefully he can continue to play better in the second half of the season, even if it's virtually 100% certain he won't be here next season.

Good game for the developing young players against a non-elite team that they should start beating with regularity

Glad that JC produced in this game. Hopefully he I’ll continue his development as a young version of Lou Williams. Late in the fourth quarter, it was obvious that he was going to keep the ball and shoot on several consecutive possessions that playoff teams would recognize and load up. It will be fascinating to see his next stage of development

On the key late game possession, it almost appeared that Lonzo was throwing the balk off the backboard knowing that Randle had a size mismatch. Understand what are all the commentators are saying. It was strange that JC was bringing up the ball in the fourth quarter, as it was planned.

Randle had a very good game against players that he should be beating with more regularity. It will be interesting to see his development against elite players, especially important if he is demanding a max contract

Thanks, DB!

Win streak. I almost forgot how to spell that.

I'd be a bit harsher again evaluating Luke. I think he was more reactive than imposing. Too often the circumstances dictate good decisions to him. But I have a feel he is learning and getting better too. Slowly, but still.

Luke in the last five games:

Definitely felt like circumstances dictated decisions to him. And I totally think he would have done a couple things I'd be pissed about had injuries, fouls, etc. not taken place...but I can't fault him for what he might have done or not done, just what happened. So he gets a good one today.

Man, these amazing write-ups are better recaps and analyzations than anything one could review at an actual major sports media outlet. Thanks a million DB!

Thanks, DB!

Win streak. I almost forgot how to spell that.

I'd be a bit harsher again evaluating Luke. I think he was more reactive than imposing. Too often the circumstances dictate good decisions to him. But I have a feel he is learning and getting better too. Slowly, but still.

Luke in the last five games:
Which Laker can presently impose their will on a game - consistently

With very young players, that is the problem.

Our “vets” (Randle and JC/Lopez and KCP) being inconsistent, Luke has limited dependable options. BI, Kuzma and Zo are more “consistent” which makes their effort on defense that much more important

Even Pop is reacting/responding to the other team’s moves, especially when his dependable players are out - Kwahi and Parker
