Can somebody fill me in as to whats exciting about him? Has no jumpshot, but athletic, decent offball defender, and thrives in transition? Am I correct on that?
I mean that sincerely. Hoping he's a good pickup, just not sure if I've got his strengths and weaknesses down.

Pretty much. He exhibited some decent vision in college as well.

So he is basically the point guard version of Nwaba?

It's a two-way contract, basically insurance in case Zo misses a few games. He is young and still has upside.
After releasing Vander Blue I am excited we signed a player like GPII. He will have a chance to further develop in the G-League and maybe help the Lakers in the future too.
In 49 games last year in D-League:
- 5th worst PnR scoring
- 5th worst PnR passing (worst on team)
- 10th %ile defense
In 64 total NBA & D/G-League games last year & this year:
- 34th percentile catching & shooting PPP
- 7th percentile PPP on pull up jumpers
In his 49 games last season for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on D he was:
- Last in overall PPP
- Last in PnR PPP
- Last in iso PPP
- Last in post PPP
- 2nd worst defending off screen shooters
- Last in roll man PPP

His name and his defense.
That's pretty much it.
he's a slasher 3 in a 1s body.
And is redundant to have when you have Josh Hart playing at the level he's been playing at.
The Lakers had a much better choice already on their G-League roster(if they weren't gonna use Caruso) in Scott Machado.
90% Free throw shooter
40% from three
47% from the field
8.4 APG
with only 2.8 TOs
That kid was literally on our G-League roster, right in front of us, and we went with Gary Payton II? We're 2nd in the league in defensive efficiency since our starting lineup of Lonzo/KCP/Ingram/Randle/Lopez has been playing.
It's not defense we're lacking it's shooting.
But we went with the name instead of who could have been more efficienct, AFTER letting Burke get away in the first place as well this signing leaves a lot to be desired.

Hope this isn't going to be come a trend. (Name over efficiency)
At least go for a Laker-brand G-leaguer when he’s got numbers like that. I hope Payton can prove the world wrong here, but damn.
