Maybe, but their defense has been pretty darn solid as usual. Quick has been spectacular in a lot of games but has had a few stinkers. Kuemper is the latest backup goaltender looking good with the defense in front of him. It really depends on whether Quick can keep up his Vezina-like play over the whole season. He certainly deserved it in 2012. It'd be great to see him finally earn it this season but he's got competition.

I like that Stevens isn't playing Quick on back-to-backs and giving him a break against some of the lower teams. I think Sutter overworked Quick a little bit, and now that Quick is over 30 and coming off an injury, I like the idea of trying to keep him more fresh.

LA Kings are in their pre-All Star game January funk as usual. They've looked bad for a while and lost yet again to the guppies, who've owned them since the great 7-series comeback in 2014. They're also at a nexus right now. They can wait until Carter returns and make some moves to make a Stanley Cup run... or they can try to take the opportunity to flip Brown and/or Gaborik while they're playing well and start the reloading process. I'd also include Muzzin and Martinez in that second group as well. They need to preserve cap space for Doughty's free-agency after next season. I hate to say it, but it may be time for them to reset the roster.

Been pretty much a .500 team since the blazing start. And we're getting killed in the division. Really need to get Carter back, but I don't think he's particularly close to a return.

Another pathetic loss by the Kings. They played well for the most part, but are completely snake-bit. Quick was dreadful allowing early period goals that completely deflated the team. They are playing very sloppy too much, with poor passing. And since they don't have a lot of speed in the lineup, they can ill afford to be poor on passing attempts. A very poor month of play with a favorable schedule and just like that they're now barely in the playoff race. They're almost at the point where it's probably best if they blow up the team and trade away the veterans to start the rebuild.

Yeah, now that they aren't at the top of the conference and have, in fact, fallen out of a playoff spot with the loss tonight, I wonder what management has in mind. I don't think you're going to see a full-scale sell job, but maybe a guy like Muzzin could get moved.

Another loss, 2-1 to the Ducks. The Kings have hit the skids.

It's the standard way. Granted Anze and Dustin have improved in the beginning but this is the lull that always happens. Just need a trade with Columbus to set the ship right. Again, no trade with Blue Jackets = no Cup.

They seem to really be struggling to score of late and the recent record is not good.

Carter is obviously greatly missed, we need to turn it around right now.

Another win in Florida and now the Kings have won 5 out of 6 and are back in 2nd place in the division, which is super-competitive after Vegas. Calgary, San Jose, and Anaheim all have just 1 fewer point than the Kings. Kuemper has been playing great in goal, but it was Quick that got back in there last night and played well. Perhaps he's over the injury hump now. It seems like it's going to be a dogfight to make the playoffs, but at least we're in it. If only Carter could return fairly soon.

Also, the trade deadline is approaching. Will be interesting to see how the Kings play it, assuming the playoff situation stays like this, all bunched up.

We won't win a Cup unless we do a deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

lol, it's not valid until we get that certain future consideration in the form of a player who will score the decisive goals in our SC Cup run. I don't care if it's a one legged prospect but there needs to be tangible returns for it to happen!

Kings trade Marian Gaborik and Nick Shore for Dion Phaneuf and Nate Thompson. Sad to see Gabby go after he jumpstarted our last Cup run. Sens will eat 25% of Phaneuf's salary. If this were maybe 3-4 years ago, this might be a nice trade but Phaneuf's a shell of his former self and wasn't a very good possession Dman though offensively skilled.

Welp, Phaneuf got pulled mid-game at the Sens-Pens for the trade and I guess it works out for him because his new team's next game is in Pittsburgh. So, he won't have to leave the city to play his next game.

That's my read on it too, Phaneuf isn't what he once was. Hope he can help, though.

Actually, he'd kinda be the perfect Sutter D-Man, especially since it was Sutter who got him and later had his brother coach up. I wonder if we can bring back Sutter just for the playoffs as a "consultant/coach".

They basically got a guy that's healthy in exchange for Gaborik's lesser salaried contract even though the cap hits are almost the same after the salary retention by Ottawa. Kings are still paying a tad bit more in cap space overall though. Not sure if they should do that since they need every penny to re-sign Drew. Not a great trade as the Kings took back 2 old guys with multiple years left on their contracts, but at least the main guy is healthy. Thompson will be relegated to third or fourth line center minutes anyways and gets hurt. Shore at least was younger and still had potential. They need to make a lot more changes.

I don't think Stevens is a bad coach, but Dave Tippett is still available if there's a change that needs to be made. I'd much rather have him back as the head coach. Kings specialty teams were pretty darn good during his run as assistant coach and everywhere else he's been he's turned teams around.

Another trade. Sending away Darcy Kuemper for Tobias Rieder and Scott Wedgewood. I get trying to sell high on Kuemper (see Scrivens, Budaj, etc), but I'm wondering if we could've gotten more.

Agree. I would've liked the team to have gotten some draft picks to replenish the system. Too bad the flyers already traded for a goaltender since they were desperate for one.
