Win Streak...Snapped… With both Lonzo and Ingram out with injuries, this one looked like a loss going in. The Lakers just aren’t talented enough to lose key starters like that.

They struggled out of the gates and couldn’t impose their pace on the Grizzlies. At halftime, they trailed by 10 points and were outscored 9-6 on the break.

The Lakers would cut the lead to 2, however, midway through the third quarter. Then it fell apart. They gave up back-to-back 3-point plays and several transition scores to trail by 20 over the course of the next several minutes of ball.

The game was won right there even if the Lakers would play a spirited fourth quarter.

Despite not having their two primary playmakers in the lineup, the Lakers would score plenty of points. They could not string together stops with consistency, falling 123-114

Randle -- -- The starters had the lead cut to 2 in the third quarter, but no one was able to impose their will on the game on either end. Typically, we have Lonzo and BI instigating on offense with Randle and Lopez setting screens. Those two guys were missing, so our pick and roll game which Randle excels at wasn’t a factor. That made for a choppy night for him. On D, Randle also didn’t run at the C spot for more than a couple minutes with Gasol out there and Luke opting to bring in Nance/Kuzma as a platoon mostly. The Lakers struggled to get into their groove. The refs were really letting a lot go in the paint with the physicality. Usually, Randle’s the aggressor there, but it didn’t seem like it today. Also, looked like the Grizzlies were more active on help when Randle had the ball in his hands, trying to get him to cough it up. So a clunky night altogether for Julius. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 2-7 shooting (0-2 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 8 boards (4 offensive) to go with 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He drew FTs on the offensive glass on the first possession, he made both. He missed a jumphook, but got it back and scored the layup. He missed a wing three. He missed a jumphook in the middle of the paint (looked fouled). Bad force on a jumphook in the paint and he missed. He muscled in an And-1 layup after sealing his man in the paint, he made the FT. He missed a half-court runner at the buzzer. He had 7 points on 2-7 shooting and 5 boards. Second Half: He rejected Gasol from behind on one end and drew FTs on the offensive glass in transition on the other, he made both.

Lopez -- -- Not much of a game from Lopez. He bricked from three and was largely ineffective offensively, except for some decent passing sequences. He seems more automatic on his drives off the three line where he hits those tricky, running midrange shots than he is from three. Defensively, not enough of a presence in the game. Typically, he seems to get several good challenges in. I only recall a couple. The Stats: He scored The Action: He missed a jumphook on the first possession. He bricked a wing three. He missed a three in transition. He was stripped for a turnover. Flagrant-1 on a push in the back after that. Good challenge on Gasol’s drive to get a stop. He then drew FTs in the post on the other end, he made one. Nice give-and-go to Ennis for a layup. Quick swing pass to KCP for the three. Second Half: He sank the Dirk fade in the post. He airballed a wide open three. He attacked off the three line and hit the And-1 runner, he missed the FT. Short on a jumphook. Good help challenge to get a stop.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Luke said he wasn’t sure why KCP has picked it up. Said he was in a “good place” right now. Strong game from him to lead the team in scoring. He led the Lakers with 13 points in the first half on 4-6 shooting. In the second half, he was a little less effective, going 4-12. The shot selection wasn’t as good. He had good looks to get him going, then got a little more liberal with the attempts when he felt he was feeling it and the effectiveness went down. We scored enough points to win with the effort he gave on that end of the floor. “We couldn’t get stops,” he said. The Stats: He scored 27 points on 8-16 shooting (6-10 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He missed a forced baseline floater up against the shotclock. He sank a pull-up 16-footer. He grabbed a loose ball and swished a wing three. He swished a three curling off the screen for the catch and shoot. He drew contact on a closeout for FTs, he made both. He missed a pull-up jumper. He swiped a ball getting back in transition. He lost the ball for a dunk the other way. He airmailed a kickout out of bounds. He sank a three from the top of the arc off a swing pass. Second Half: He missed a pull-up three in transition. He drew FTs on a rebound and push out, he made both. He sank a wing three on a handoff. He missed a wing three in transition. He attacked and fumbled the dribble away. He missed a pull-up wing jumper. He missed a wing three. He kicked to Hart for three. His sideline three bounced out and back in again. He sank a wing three. He missed a wild, deep three in transition (kind of looks we’ve been avoiding lately). He attacked and threw in a frozen-rope And-1 from about 17 feet out, he made the FT. He couldn’t finish a layup in transition.

Hart -- -- He scored all 16 of his points in the second half as he knocked down a couple of threes and got out in transition to score layups over and through defenders. Love how he finishes through contact. Just very strong for his size and consistently gets it done at the rim. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 5-10 shooting (2-6 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block and 1 foul in 32 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He missed an open wing three. He missed a baseline pull-up jumper. He ballwatched and had to foul to recover on a layup. Second Half: He knocked a ball loose, got out in transition, took the pass and was fouled on the layup for FTs, he made both. He muscled in a layup getting out in transition. He was tripped on a cut down the lane for FTs, he made both. He airballed a wide open three. He sank a wing three. He missed a wing three. He swished a wing three on a kickout. He attacked Gasol in transition, took contact and scored the layup over him. He got out in transition again and scored a layup (wanted the And-1). He missed a deep three at the buzzer.

Ennis -- -- No substitution for Lonzo, that’s for sure. We miss Lonzo’s D and his ability to get us out on the break. This game looked just like those other losses when Lonzo was gone. We’ve got the worst PG group in the league when Lonzo is out. Two 2-way contract players and Ennis. That’s tough. We need our PGs to be aggressive. In the second half, he was non-existent. “I should be back soon,” Lonzo said. I imagine he misses the next game or two, too, as it’s still swollen. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-6 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 1 block and 1 foul in 17 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He attacked in early offense and scored a layup. He swished a quick-fire corner jumper to just beat the shotclock. He missed a short lefty attempt in the lane. He attacked and airballed a floater. Great D on back-to-back possessions, challenging at the rim to get stops. He scored a layup off the give-and-go with Lopez. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Kuzma -- -- He was blocked quite a bit tonight (one was a goaltend that robbed him of two points as it was clearly off the glass), but several other shots blocked. He still knocked down four threes to help him get 18 in this one (should have been 20). Defensively, I don’t recall too many positive plays. He even got yelled at by Larry once. He and Clarkson had several miscues. “Tonight was one of those nights,” he said about the D not doing much right. Kuzma still piled up the stats with his activity, leading the Lakers in assists with Lonzo and Ingram out. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 6-16 shooting (4-8 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 5 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He swished a quick-fire wing three on his first attempt. He missed a wing three, got it back and was stripped. He crashed the glass and tipped in a miss. Quick baseline spin but he missed the layup. He missed a tough jumper. He sank a wing three on a kickout. He was called for a charge on a floater. He had 8 points on 3-7 shooting. Second Half: He overthrew an outlet, turnover. He drew FTs on the offensive glass, he made both. He missed a three straight away. He couldn’t finish a drive. Soft touch on a three to get the bounce to fall in. He was swatted on a drive. Obvious goaltend on his layup but it wasn’t called. Long outlet to Nance for the dunk. He swished a wing three. He was blocked on a drive. Short on a three, looked undercut. He attacked to his left from the sideline and flipped in the reverse with his right.

Clarkson -- -- Bonehead game from JC tonight. He was awful defensively. Offensively, he really didn’t seem like he was in any kind of flow at all. We needed him to pick up where he left off in the last game, but no luck. He had a couple of makes tonight, but on iso. He had a horrible turnover on an inbounds pass at the end of a quarter, trying to let it roll up court and had it stolen, which he then fouled on to give up FTs. Par for the course for him tonight. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 2-13 shooting (0-2 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 17 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He coughed up the ball trying to do too much off the dribble. Another wild attack and he airballed the jumphook. He missed a pull-up 19-footer. He threw a kickout away, but got it back on a steal. He attacked in transition and drew FTs, he made one. He attacked and couldn’t hit the lefty layup. He iso’d, broke his man down and scored a layup. He missed a wing jumper. He bricked a floater in the middle of the paint. He fed Caruso on the break for the layup (simple bounce pass). He iso’d and hit a 21-footer straight away. He missed a three in transition. He was swatted badly out of bounds. He missed a tough baseline floater over a couple defenders. Second Half: Fouled on the perimeter for FTs, he made both. He missed a baseline pull-up. He drew more FTs and made both. He missed a floater in the middle of the paint. He missed a wing three. He tried to let an inbounds roll up the court and it was stolen, then he fouled with 1.1 left, horrible.

Nance -- -- He took some contact on his hip on a drive early in this game and was in pain quite a bit during the game. He fought through it as best he could, but you could see the pain on his face. Looked like an old man when he got up at halftime to walk. He worked through it and tried his best to hold the line on D with 3 blocks and 3 steals. Just not a lot of help from those second unit defenders. (Having Lonzo play with that unit more in the past few has helped.) The Lakers D just got worked tonight, however. Nance was giving it to Kuzma in the first quarter for a breakdown where Kyle didn’t stop the ball (thinking JC was going to take the player instead). Good to see someone trying to lead the team on that end of the court. Didn’t matter tonight, though. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-9 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 11 boards (4 offensive), 3 steals, 3 blocks, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He took contact on a drive on the hip and was in pain, he made one FT. He scored a putback jumphook. He was blocked trying to finish strong down the lane. He broke up a lob pass. He scored a layup off the dish from Brewer. He put back in a bricked runner from JC. He broke up a lob pass on D. Second Half: He drew FTs on the defensive glass, he made both. He missed a tip-in. He blocked a dunk attempt. Horrible outlet and it was picked off. He swished a face-up wing three. He missed a tough turnaround trying to beat the shotclock. He dunked off the long outlet from Kuzma. He dunked off the drive and dish from GP. He stepped around Gasol to swipe a post entry. He swatted a layup.

Brewer -- -- With Ingram out, we started Hart at SF and brought Corey off the bench for some time. He bricked a couple of threes and couldn’t finish on drives. He might be due for one of his good games we see once a month. We could use it, for sure. The Stats: He scored 1 point on 0-5 shooting (0-2 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He was blocked on a layup. He missed a corner three. Bad pass trying to force it to JC cutting. He drew FTs trying to throwdown a putback, he made one. He hit Nance for a layup. He couldn’t finish a layup but hustled back on D to swipe the ball and ignite the break. He missed a corner three. Second Half: He choked a layup on a drive. He gambled for a steal and give up a layup.

Caruso -- -- He had the team-worst -15, which is why we see Payton II in the game (along with JC sucking). This is an important stretch for him. We need a PG to step up. If he doesn’t, you may see him go the way of Vander. He wasn’t aggressive enough tonight, which seems to be the case too often at this level. Best play of the night was taking a charge in transition. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-4 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: He stepped in to erase a breakaway by taking a charge. He scored a layup on the break with JC. Nice recovery to challenge a layup. Down 9, Randle and Hart in for Brewer and Nance. Second Half: He missed a corner three. His pass in transition was deflected. He scored a layup in transition.

Payton II -- -- “We were just looking for guys willing to fight,” Luke said of putting GP in. So we have Nance Jr., Payton II and Luke all sons of NBA players all participating in this one. Payton was aggressive offensively coming off the screens. Much needed from our PG spot and that might earn him some minutes again. Defensively, he gave up some easy hoops, but did get credit for a couple of blocks. We chipped away at the lead while he was out there, just in too big of a hole heading into that fourth. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-3 shooting to go with 4 assists, 2 blocks and 4 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He stripped a man from behind in the backcourt to get a stop. Awful D, giving up a layup with a bad angle. He broke down the D and hit Nance for a dunk. He threw up and banked in a runner (weird looking shot). He kicked out to Kuzma for three. He bounced to KCP for a three. He attacked left and scored the layup. He attacked and missed a layup high off the glass.

Walton -- -- Down Lonzo and BI. Tough break for the win streak… Down 11-4, he called a quick timeout… Down 7 still when Brewer cam in for Hart midway through the quarter… JC in for Ennis… Kuzma and Nance in for Randle and Lopez, Lakers down 4 with 4 to go… The Lakers trailed 34-27 after the first quarter… He started the Nance, Kuzma, Brewer, JC, Caruso lineup… They fell back by 13 and Luke called a timeout… Down 8, Ennis and KCP in for JC and Caruso with 5 minutes left… Down 10, Lopez back in for Kuzma with 3:45 left… The Lakers trailed 60-50 at the half. Lakers lost the break 9-6 in the first half… Good start to the quarter with the Lakers getting stops and getting out in transition to cut the lead to 4 and force a timeout… They would cut it to 2, but gave up back-to-back 3-point plays to trail by 8 again… Caruso in for Ennis down 6… They trailed by 12 when Luke brought in Nance, Kuzma and JC for Lopez, Randle and Hart… Brewer in for KCP down 13. Who would spark the Lakers back to life?... No one. They were awful on both ends during this stretch. This was where it was lost… The Lakers trailed 97-77 heading to the fourth… They trimmed it to 14 (should have been 12 with a non-call on a goaltend). Timeout Grizzlies… They cut it to 9 with 3 minutes left. Timeout… Too little, too late…

Randle and JC had the opportunity to show their individual value and leadership ability.

If JC is not making shots and not playing defense, why is he on the court - because Caruso and Ennis are worst than him

Randle didn't create pace when he was in the game while allowing the Grizs to play at their pace - s.l.o.w.

These are the games that highlight what level JC and Randle (physically talented NBA players) can play at consistently and what roles they are best at

Thanks for the painful write up

Caruso and Ennis need to go. GP may not be very good, but he or anyone else we can pick up can’t be as bad as the other two.

Gotta work on your game!

Thanks DB. I figured with one would be a tough one with Lonzo and BI out.

Why not let Zubac play when we down 20? Nance as the C was playing thru injury anyway, Randle only allowed to play PF and Brook wasn't doing much a nyway?

Thanks DB. This team is so hard to watch without Lonzo. Disappointed to hear that he has a mild knee strain, I hope he's able to heal and go without further risk soon. I didn't watch, so I appreciate the recap. And as always - great recap!

I expected Payton's time out there to be semi-disastrous, good to read we actually held our own and that he was aggressive on offense. From my memory of college I'd expect he would improve quickly on defense if he were to stick with the team, but it's way early in that regards.

Good to see KCP staying active and hitting some shots. Not good to see the subs let the deficit double.
