Quote:
Before the game, Brian Shaw spoke to Payton II to help him acclimate to the Lakers. Shaw grew up in Oakland with Payton's father so that had to be a cool moment for both.
Payton II said he will try to bring what his father did to the Lakers. "Defense, just try to be aggressive," he said. "Don't have the trash talk like he does but I can still get it going.
We kind of have similar games, but I'm above the rim more than he was. So you can throw it up to me."

seems more athletic, better penetrator and defender than caruso or ennis. Could be 3rd string if he gets a reliable J.

A good comparison for GP II is Patrick Beverley.

At this point looks more effective on the open floor than in half court. I didn't know he dunked a lot. Could be an interesting situation with the Lakers, wish him the best. Eventhough the best situation for him with the Lakers is being Lonzo's back up, I hope him and Lonzo on the court at the same time.

The only thing that worries about his dunking is getting an injury like DRose.

The only player to win the defensive player of the year TWICE in the PAC-12.

Again I would say the Lakers style of play suites him more than the Bucks.

The Lakers seem to target players with NBA/pro bloodlines, biracial players and players who've spent more than one season in college.

I think certainly in drafting multi-year college guys has worked well for them. In recent years they got guys like Nance, Clarkson, Kuzma, and Hart with late picks, at least partially as a result of those guys playing multiple years in school and maybe being seen as having less upside as a result. But each came into the league capable of being rotation players as rookies.

I remember liking GP in the draft. Great athlete, like on the Nwaba level. Big soft hands for finishing around the rim and a great defender in college.

Since we had to let Nwaba go, hopefully GP II can come in and take over where he left off.

Gary Payton II Calls Signing With Lakers A ‘Great Fit’ For Him

Quote:
“Oh, great fit for me. Anybody can get the rebound, we outlet and kick ahead. Like, ‘Zo, he loves to kick the ball ahead. So we just get it and go.”

Payton is a dogged defender and dynamic athlete, as well as a pugnacious rebounder who averaged 6.6 boards over two years in the G League despite standing just 6’3.

GPIII scored two points in garbage minutes last night. He's undersized but uses his speed to his advantage.
He hustled and played hard but didn't look too good playing off of the ball because he has no legit jump shot.
The South Bay Lakers needed him more last night than the LA Lakers but the experience should serve him well.
