PostPosted: Thu Jan 18, 2018 4:07 pm    Post subject: Official Nigel Hayes thread....let go by the Lakers

Nigel Hayes is leaving "dirty" NYC for sunny California.

The rookie forward, who signed a training-camp deal with the Knicks before spending the entire season in the G League, signed a 10-day contract with the Lakers, according to Yahoo Sports.

Hayes, a standout at the University of Wisconsin, infamously bad-mouthed the Big Apple while in town for a college tournament, calling it "too big" and "dirty," with "trash everywhere" and "too many people."

He was then signed by Phil Jackson and played for the Summer League squad before averaging averaging 14.9 points and 6.6 rebounds on 46 percent shooting over 30 games with the Westchester Knicks of the G-League.

Good defense and he can somewhat stretch the D from the 4 spot. He was high on a lot of draft experts "steal" category in the second round. He was part of the Wisconsin championship team that beat Julius if memory serves me correctly. Plays more like a 3 than a 4. He has NBA potential but I have to feel there were better options.

Nigel Hayes is a poster boy for what the NCAA likes to call a “student athlete.” Some student athletes are better players than students, others just the opposite. But Hayes represents the best of both worlds. A two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, Hayes earned a degree in business finance and investment banking, but he also left his mark on the court, ranking high in Wisconsin history in several statistical categories.

Can he guard small forwards?

Was projected second round at best. Sounds like a pretty smart dude who could make his way independently of his NBA trajectory.

Not holding my breath but not a bad college background.

Edit: listed as 254lbs on NY G League site, can hit 3's at a 44% clip.

No idea about his ability to play defense or play at a fast pace. Odd. We have a lot of 4's. Gotta see him play I guess.

He's actually a 6'7" undersized PF. & with the bunch of PF's we already have
he has no chance at PT with our NBA team.

I saw him a play few times. He gives good effort and intensity on both ends of the floor. Solid G-Leaguer. 44% from deep is impressive though. Can he keep it up? ..... we shall see.

really? Hayes was fairly popular in college....was a Sophomore on the Frank Kaminsky and Sam Dekker Wisconsin team that knocked off the dominant KAT/Booker UK team in the Final Four...then lost in the championship game against the Okafor/Winslow Duke team....he was very solid his Junior and Senior seasons...but never really lived up to expectations.

Still have no idea why we need another Power Forward

Maybe Luke wants to move Kuz at SF taking all of Brew's minutes away. They are weak on at the SF from the bench.

Bench:
Kuz - SF
Jordan Clarkson/ Josh Hart - SG
Larry Nance - C
Gary Payton II/ Tyler Ennis - PG
Nigel Hayes - PF

Also a good three point shooter in a 3/4 hybrid zone

http://www.forumblueandgold.com/2018/01/18/lakers-nigel-hayes-10-day-contract/

He's a tweener but he can shoot the ball and that's important. I can see if he sticks, getting minutes at the 3 with Kuzma at the 4 with the bench.

At least that would be the ideal scenario. The question will be if he can stay in front of 3s in the NBA, then again, they could always make it he plays the 3 and Kuz plays the 4 and Kuz defends the 3s and he defends the 4s as his base is stronger than Kuz's so he may handle the bigger bodies better but we'll see.

Here's the complimentary highlight against South Bay

Also if you needed more reason to like him, he was initially a LeBron fan growing up, but he became a Kobe fan later on in life and preferred him over LeBron.

In the 2015 NCAA Tournament he was fortunate enough to get Kobe's Locker, and this hilarity of deductive reasoning ensued.

(Caution: Worst stabilization device on a camera ever)

and for the heck of it

Could this signing be a sign that Kuzma is going to miss significant time?

(sorry if I missed his latest injury update).

Anyway, about Nigel - Brandon Bass-ish?

I’m sure he’s heard of him but he tweeted that he would need to watch some game footage of him to understand his game and how he would fit in with the Lakers.

Kuz is expecting to play tonight. KCP and Lonzo are the only ones confirmed out tonight.
