is there a crappier thing in existence?
Yeah . . . ending up financially ruined because of a serious illness or devastating injury. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

I'm saying I want universal healthcare
Of course. All sane people do. Outside of that, do you have car insurance? Home insurance? _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

on a basic Kaiser plan does the job so far since my fam has been very healthy since being on it. Zero cost health check ups for the kids and a couple of $30 copay visits with a reasonable premium.
If serious health issues pop up I will just switch to the higher cost PPO option my job offers. _________________ (bleep) Kawhi

Anthem BC 2011-17 (anthem stopped carrying plans in CA), in 2016 was paying $250 for an indiv PPO policy with a 6K ded, took a bad fall, ran that deductible into the dirt and had to pay 4k out of my own pocket (Ambulance ride, forearm surgery, ER stay) and that left me very pissed off. Switched to blue shield PPO jan 1st, since my work doesnt have insurance benefits.

Yeah, I got thrown off a few weeks ago... Family policy was $2,777 month total for four people, but it was basically useless even without a deductible. Apparently Anthem wasn't making enough money. The equivalent policy with Blue Shield was $3,450 per month. Pretty insane that you pay the equivalent of a second mortgage for something which you can't even use barring catastrophe. _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:
I feel like america has the best health care in the world. The problem is not everyone has access to it.
What I don’t get is Obamacare made it mandatory to purchase health insurance for all individuals. Why would insurance companies be against this? Doesn’t it make more money that more people will be forced to buy insurance vs those who don’t? Why would they bribe republicans into repealing Obamacare. Doesn’t make sense to me

pre obamacare -
The well off could afford that "best healthcare in the world" you speak of
The rest of us could not. which meant quite a few people had terrible catastrophic plans that didnt even cover certain catastrophes and would kick you off if things got to expensive for them. So basically some people were paying or healthcare that would not even help them which was a complete waist if you think about it. If I know I'm not going to get help anyway. I might as well keep my pennies.
The others fell some where in the middle with rising costs for okay insurance.
Obamacare:
The well to do could easily afford the best healthcare
The majority of us were experiencing ridiculous increases every year anyway(people forget this.) but now all of our plans were brought up to a minimum standard. meaning, no more fake plans that wouldnt cover you where you were just wasting your cash. But to do this, it meant that you brought more people in. More people forced to pay into insurance. But you also brought in more sick people, injured people, etc.
insurance companies make money off of you never having to use your actual insurance. As much as we all cry about the premiums. your premium aint got nothing on your actual Bill if you do the math. Go ahead and hang out in a hospital bed for a week and let them run a few tests. take that bill out and compare that to your YEARLY premiums/Deductibles/copays/co-ins. Zero comparison. Which means if too many people are sick, the insurance companies could actually start losing money on the deal. This is why our entire system needs to be revamped. It's not just about single payer. its about the costs of these procedures/the drugs, etc.
