Defending Home Court… After the defensive battle in the last game, it was a high scoring 67-63 first half for the Lakers against the Knicks in the early Sunday game.

The Lakers struggled to chase the Knicks off the three line, and very early in the third quarter, Luke changed things up. He benched his starters, then brought back in Randle to run with Nance and they went on a 10-0 run to close the third quarter and lead by 9. The Knicks were scoreless for the last 4:29 of the third as L.A. locked down.

“I was searching out a group that was willing to play that type of defense,” Luke said. He dialed in that Randle, Nance, Brewer, JC, AC lineup and ran with it to take over the game.

The Lakers held the Knicks to just 44 points in the second half on their way to the 127-107 win. That’s more like it.

The coaches have done nothing but emphasize D lately and the team is clamping down.

“During our home win streak we’ve been really, really good defensively,” Luke said.

Randle -- -- Dominant. He drew a couple fouls on Porzingis early to help get him into foul trouble. He basically punched first in this one. Julius would score 12 points in the first half on several dunks. In fact, I don’t know what his personal record for dunks in a game is, but I can’t remember a game with as many as he had than this one (he had six dunks). He was changing ends with speed. We want to play with pace and he is our best big making that happen. Defensively, Luke kind of got on him in the last one. He benched all the starters early in the third in this one. Not really fair to Julius, but he brought him back after a bit and that Randle/Nance unit rolled. Some excellent awareness by Jules on help rotations as the game went along to try to prevent mismatches when he could. JC and Julius combined for 56 points, 18 boards, 15 assists and 4 steals. I doubt they’ve ever filled the stat sheet combined like that before. The Stats: He scored 27 points on 11-17 shooting (0-1 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 12 boards (4 offensive), 5 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He spun baseline on Porzingis and dunked with both hands. He threw down another dunk a few seconds later off a steal. Too hot on an interior feed to Ingram, turnover. He missed a one-dribble pull-up jumper (keep your dribble alive and jab step instead of wasting it like that). Ingram drew a double and found him for FTs on a throwdown attempt, he made both (yay!). He pulled out a rebound, then airballed a jumphook on a drive. He finished the layup over Porzingis on the break after getting contact. Pumped after drawing an offensive foul on the defensive end to get a stop. He missed a three to beat the shotclock. He crossed over Porzingis badly and drew his second foul on a layup attempt, he made both FTs. Nice fight for an offensive board. Changing ends with speed and JC found him for the dunk. Second Half: He grabbed an offensive board, up-faked and scored the layup. He hammered over Porzingis after taking the pocket pass. He charged in transition on the pushout, not changing directions as a guard set up in the lane. He missed a drive, got it back and was fouled on the jumphook, he made one FT. He attacked off the three line and scored a layup, twisting an ankle in the process. He attacked down the middle of the paint, drew the D and dumped it to Nance for the dunk. He took a jumpball with 5 on the shotclock, attacked Porzingis from the wing, spun and scored the lefty layup over him. He missed a reverse attempt (instead of trying to finish with his right). He dunked off the drive and dish from Ingram. He grabbed an airball and dunked. He hit a running hook. He threw up a lob to Larry on the break for the dunk (big to big breakaway!).

Ingram -- -- He looked like he was moving pretty well and he said he felt decent, not 100 percent, but good enough. Some good help from the bench to cover for him today. “Corey Brewer locked in on his guy,” Ingram said afterward. Luke played him sparingly in the second half. After a long rest with most of the starters, he returned late in the fourth. He attacked and set up Randle for a dunk. That might have been the dagger. Favorite play of the day of his might have been the drive from the corner to challenge Porzingis at the rim. He hung after taking contact and scored the layup over him. Not easy to do. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-13 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He missed a turnaround in the midpost. He attacked baseline and kicked to Lopez for the three. He attacked, hung and was blocked. He lost the handle, turnover. He drew a double team and found Randle for FTs. He airballed a short one on the baseline. He fumbled a defensive board out of bounds. He faced up, jab-stepped and hit the baseline jumper. He up-faked Porzingis at the elbow, drew the contact and hit the And-1 jumper (sending KP back to the bench), he made the FT. He missed a turnaround in the post. He drew FTs fighting for post position, he made one. He missed a face-up jumper in the midpost. He dunked on the drive and dish from JC. Second Half: He missed a pull-up 18-footer. He forced a baseline jumper on iso and missed. Back in after a long rest, he broke down the D and dumped it to Randle for the dunk. He airballed a wing three up against the shotclock. He attacked off the three line, got contact on Porzingis, hung and scored the layup over him. He missed a deep three when Clarkson gave it to him with a second on the shotclock.

Lopez -- -- Back in the starting lineups for matchups against the Knicks two bigmen. It sounds like Luke may be doing more of this based on matchups. He was burying threes from all points on the court on his way to a strong 14-point first half. Second half, Luke said enough was enough when the team couldn’t get stops and that was it for Lopez’s run. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-9 shooting (4-6 from three) to go with 4 boards, 1 turnover and no fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He sank a corner three on a kickout. He drained a rainbow wing three on a swing pass. He sank a step-back in the midpost. Short on a step-back three. He sank another rainbow three from the top of the arc. He missed a corner three, not quite squared up. He missed a layup on the rim run. He swished a wide open three set up out of a timeout. He attacked and was hit with no call, missing the drive. Second Half: He traveled on the first possession.

Hart -- -- Of course, after I give him some props for his D late in the game last time, he was not a factor defensively in this one. He does take on the toughest assignments and for some of these guys, like Hardaway tonight, it’s the first time seeing them. But he got lit pretty good by Hardaway. Got to watch those touch fouls, too. Not a good outing today. The Stats: He scored He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three to go with 1 block and 3 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He missed a wing three. Nice block on the break. Second Half: He fouled Hardaway on a made three to start the half.

Ennis -- -- Don’t know how long Lonzo will be out for but I think Ennis may have lost his backup PG role today with how Caruso has played the last two with JC off the bench. Luke benched Ennis in the second half quickly. He’ll still start I’m guessing with Lonzo out. Luke was asked as much and didn’t seem willing to budge off that. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 1 steal and no fouls in 11 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He missed a wing three on a kickout. He pushed out the break with speed and hit Randle with a lefty pass off the dribble for the score. Second Half: He attacked and got contact with no call, turnover.

Kuzma -- -- Tough matchup for him with the size the Knicks have, but he’s played some spirited D previously against it. Luke made the right call in the second half, eventually going with the Randle/Nance lineup and the Lakers took off from there. Defensively, no stats on that end of the floor (especially the boards). Good offensive impact while he was out there, scoring 15 points in just 10 minutes on efficient shooting (uh, hit your FTs, please!). He jammed a finger in the first half and missed both right after doing that. He sank a couple of threes and the touch was there around the rim when he was attacking with speed. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-8 shooting (2-4 from three, 1-3 form the line) to go with no other stats and 2 fouls in 10 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He up-faked and sank the sideline jumper. He dunked when Caruso made the extra pass on the break. He took the pocket pass from Caruso and hit the And-1 runner, he made the FT. He drained the wide open pick-and-pop three (good job getting himself squared up). He missed a wing three on a kickout. He jab-stepped, attacked left and drew FTs, hurting his finger as he hit the ground, he missed both. Second Half: He sank a corner three on the inbounds pass. He crossed over Porzingis and scored the floater. He missed a three trailing the break.

Clarkson -- -- Picking up where he left off in the last one, he had 14 points on 6-8 shooting, 3 assists and 4 boards in the first half. “He was struggling defensively in the first half,” Luke said. He kept up the scoring/playmaking and once the D got locked in later in the third quarter, that paid dividends for the Lakers. These last two games have been masterful offensively. He hasn’t had as many assists since his rookie year with the 10 today. Despite not starting, he was able to still play the most minutes tonight (which is a must with our current guard situation). I’d say the shooting looks automatic, but he’s one of our more reliable shooters so nothing we haven’t see from him in that regard. But the putting it all together with the assists, scoring, boards…just off the charts right now. Keep it up, JC! The Stats: He scored 29 points on 12-19 shooting (1-5 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 10 assists, 3 steals, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 38 minutes. He was a +23. The Action: He attacked baselined, elevated and slammed. He drew FTs on two long strides down the paint, he made one. He drop-stepped from the elbow off the dribble to split defenders and score a layup (two-for-one). He swished a three off the Nance screen. He missed a pull-up jumper, followed his miss, got it back and reversed. He sank a pull-up wing jumper getting the big on his heels. He missed a wing three. He hit Randle on the break for a dunk. He attacked and fed Ingram for the dunk. He got the big on his heels and hit the pull-up jumper. Second Half: He missed a three. He attacked and hit the tough baseline pull-up on the same possession. He found Brewer open for the three. Bad attempt on a fade in the lane on a mismatch (back that out, clear out and then go to work). He choked a break, waiting too long to pass, turnover. He picked up his dribble but found Caruso cutting a second later for a layup. He attacked in transition with speed, elevated and scored the layup over the D. He pushed out the break and found Larry at the last second for the layup. He was blocked on a three at the end of the quarter. Quick first step and he hit a floater from the right side. He swished a tricky wing jumper with a second on the clock on the SLOB play. He attacked from the wing and drew FTs, he made a tech FT, then both foul FTs. He missed a pull-up from the top of the key. He attacked left and hit the floater with his right. He got a switch, attacked the big and scored the easy layup after running clock. He missed a three on iso.

Nance -- -- Unsung hero tonight. Just a lot of little stuff on the floor on both ends. I think matching up with Porzingis helped the Lakers turn this offensive game into a defensive win in the second half. That cooled things down and also helped with our perimeter D. Offensively, he was active on the glass, getting the Lakers multiple possessions. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-9 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 2 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a +27. The Action: Great screen to free up Caruso for the score. He got a nice running start for a lob throwdown out of a timeout and hammered it. He missed a lefty layup he should have had, got it back and was fouled, he made both FTs. Great help on Randle’s man in the paint to swat the shot. He kept a missed three alive on the other end, out jumping everyone. He hustled for another offensive board and was fouled for FTs on that same possession, he made one. Another offensive board to reset the offense. He choked a layup he should have had. Second Half: He sank an open wing jumper. Good hands on the late pass from JC on the break and Larry finished the layup. He missed a wing jumper. He dunked off the drive and dish from Randle. He kept an offensive board alive. He rejected Porzingis for a jumpball. He threw down the lob dunk from Randle on the break.

Brewer -- -- Actually really liked this game from him. He was one of the few to bring some D in the first half. He helped solidify the D in the second half and Luke left him out there. It’s a challenge offensively when teams will leave him open at the three line, but he was able to work that out, including sinking a three tonight. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-6 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +16. The Action: Nice help on the defensive glass. Great tag on the roll man to knock a ball away and ignite a break. He scooped up a loose ball and quickly outlet for a score. He stole a pass and missed the pull-up wing three at the buzzer. Second Half: He scored a layup, cutting off of Caruso’s drive to take the pass. He hit a tough pull-up at the elbow. He hit Caruso for a three on the break. He sank a wing three next time down on a kickout. He missed a tough corner three with the clock low. He missed a corner three.

Caruso -- -- Confidence is so important for a player making the transition from the G-League to the bigs. It felt like he found that in the last game, looking more like the guy we saw for South Bay. He built on that confidence in this one. Great game and he was rewarded by Luke playing the last 22 minutes of the game today. “He’s really changed his mindset,” Luke said about how Caruso’s aggressiveness has changed. Been yapping about that for a while with AC and it seemed like it’s finally starting to click. Excellent activity to start this one. A lot of notes in the first half as he floor generalled for the second unit. He was finding teammates, was under control and the offense was clicking. The Lakers had just 6 turnovers on the day. But it was the team defense in the second half that helped them get the win. Luke quickly sat Ennis to start the half and left AC out there the rest of the way. The perimeter finally got locked up and the Lakers went on a run. “He’s a very intelligent player,” Luke said, mentioning about how well he plays with JC. They took control of the backcourt in the second half. Just a great job in the best game of his NBA career so far. Keep it up. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-6 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 4 boards, 8 assists, 2 steals and 1 foul in 31 minutes. He was a +24. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He missed the 19-footer coming off the screen to take the pass. Extra pass on the break to Kuzma for a dunk instead of taking it himself. He attacked off the great screen from Larry and banked the floater. He split a double but missed a lefty layup attempt badly (should have tried to hammer). He hit Kuzma on a pocket pass for an And-1. He split a double and was hit with no call on the layup finish. He drew a charge on the other end for a stop. He found Kuzma wide open on the pick and pop for three. Great lob pass on a set play to Larry from about 40 feet for the dunk. He drew an illegal screen call to get a stop. Second Half: He broke down the D and dumped it to Corey cutting for the layup. He set up Randle for the dunk off the two-man game. He swished a wing three on a kickout. Great cut to help out JC who picked up his dribble and Caruso scored the reverse after taking the pass. Good hustle to save a loose ball inbounds on D. Nice recovery on his man to force a brick on a drive. He hit Bryant for the three on the pick and pop. He swiped a pass in transition.

Bryant -- -- He got in for the final minute and Caruso set him up for the open three. Splash. Kid can hit from downtown. Hopefully, we can find him some more minutes to help in his development this season. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-1 shooting from three in 1 minute. He was a +1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He sank a wing three on the pick and pop with Caruso.

Zubac -- -- We went to the garbage time Zubac/Bryant front court for the final minute. Zu had a turnover in the post. The Stats: He had 1 turnover in 1 minute. He was a +1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He iso’d and turned it over.

Hayes -- -- In for the final minute of garbage time. No time to do much. The Stats: He didn’t have any stats in 1 minute. He was a +1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Walton -- -- Trailing 11-7 he called a timeout after a defensive breakdown… Lakers down 1 when Brewer came in for Ingram… JC in for Hart, Lakers up 4 with 4:40 left… Kuzma and Caruso in for Ennis and Lopez… Nance in for Randle, Lakers up 2 with 2 to go… The Lakers led 30-29 after the first quarter… He started the Nance, Kuzma, Brewer, JC, Caruso lineup… Ingram in for Brewer with 10 to go, Lakers up 4… Lakers up 9 on an 8-0 run over 43 seconds. That forced a timeout. Good minute by Caruso… Kuzma out for Hart, Ingram to the PF spot now… Randle in for Caruso, sliding Ingram back to SF… Nance doing a good job with activity on both ends… Starters back in with JC instead of Ennis. Luke called a timeout up by just 4… The Lakers led 67-63 at the half. Only 2 Laker turnovers… He sat Ennis for Caruso barely 2 minutes into the half, Lakers down 1. He then called a timeout a few seconds later, down 4… Luke then benched everyone. Nance, Kuzma, Brewer, JC and Caruso now in 2 minutes into the half… Down 6 he called another timeout… Randle in for Kuzma to match up Larry with Porzingis. This unit got stops… The Lakers finished the quarter on a 10-0 run. They led 97-89 heading into the fourth… Same unit to start the fourth… The Knicks called a timeout when the Lakers led by 10… Beasley with 5 founds. Lakers need to attack that… Up 7, he called timeout… He brought Ingram in for Brewer out of that with 6:30 left… Lakers extending the lead and milking the clock for the last 3 minutes… A minute left, Luke emptied the bench… Good job by Luke today changing up lineups quickly and dialing in a unit that locked down…

Thanks DB. I thought the pushback by the lakers when they were down 84-78 was the key tonight. They responded and never looked back.

Thanks DB!! That play of the game from Ingram you mentioned - what a play!!! For a second he looked like a very savvy vet schooling Porky on how it's done for and-one. I was amazed he made that shot.

This was a heck of a team effort led by Clarkson, Caruso and Nance. Randle was a monster down the stretch too.

I was getting really down at how awful the Lakers were without Lonzo, wishing someone would step up. It looks to me like several players are learning to step up. All the better for when Lonzo returns.

Thanks DB great writeup. I guess it is a labor of love when they play like this.

Fun game to watch.

They play much better with Caruso than Ennis. I Ennis a possible cut?

Anyway loved JC, Randle, Caruso, Nance contributions today. The team is playing better and soon we will get KCP and ZO back. Zo and Caruso seem like a good PG group. JC/KCP can handle SG and backup SF.

Like to see us at full stength with good rotations.

Don’t know how long Lonzo will be out for but I think Ennis may have lost his backup PG role today with how Caruso has played the last two with JC off the bench.

I think there's a chance LA limits Caruso's games to the 2-way contract max this season. He signed a 2 year 2-way contract which means if they don't convert him this year they retain his rights next year without it counting against the salary cap. I suppose the opportunity cost of converting his deal now is just the difference between the roster hold and his contract. But what is that, $500k?

Assuming Lonzo isn't out for an extended period more likely LA keeps those no cap hit rights to Caruso and finds a way to make it work with those # of games, Ennis and the Mitten in the backup roles.

Yeah, you might be right on Caruso. Kind of unfortunate for him if he’s finally getting his confidence going.

On the bright side, he's only played 14 games this year (per ESPN stats). There are 36 Laker games left on the year, and given that the 2-way contract max is 41 games, he can play in all but 9 of them. We can probably live with 27/36 for Caruso, as much as I like seeing him play.

Hart & Ennis didn't do much but it seems like everyone else stepped up.

Clarkson and Randle have elevated their games lately. Thanx DB!

The Lakers outscored the Knicks in all four Quarters!

I doubt the Lakers have done that in even two other games this year...

Thanks, DB!

Nice game, great notes, delightful analysis.

Was this the best game of Luke this season?

We're 6-4 for the last 10 games. Not bad.

Positive growing experience that hopefully the young players will totally embrace its lessons

Great games from JC and Julius. Their long-term value is based on their consistency over 82 games and their production against elite competition

Hope for the best in the Celtics game

6-2 in their last 8. I like the sound of that better.

Larry coming in for Kuzma in the 3rd quarter was huge. Porzee just scored 7 straight points off Kuzma and was getting any shots he wanted. Larry neutralized unicorn from that point forward.

Credit to Luke for being on point with his coaching the last 2 games. I do hope they bring up to Brook his volume of 3 point attempts. Yes he made a good majority of them, but how much does that really help or hurt the team especially on transition D? Especially for nights where he is bricking regularly.

Ennis? Damn I thought he finally figured it out during the Pacers game that he needs to come in with aggression. But it was just a one shot deal. He came in as timid as he's been. Even on a fast break he was initiating, he was semi running! Really frustrating to find a guard who doesn't understand the tempo of the game. Caruso gets it and hopefully he continues to bring it moving forward. We should cut Ennis and just promote Caruso into a full time player.

On the bright side, he's only played 14 games this year (per ESPN stats). There are 36 Laker games left on the year, and given that the 2-way contract max is 41 games, he can play in all but 9 of them. We can probably live with 27/36 for Caruso, as much as I like seeing him play.

Yeah, expect to see more of him and Bryant down the stretch.
