#CelticsPick… Celtics vs. Lakers. Always a big game no matter where either team is in the standings.

It’s funny how draft picks can move around in this league. Of course, the Celtics now have the rights to the Lakers first round pick if it lands between positions 2-5 in the draft. Last season, it was the Celtics swapping picks with the Nets and the Lakers then using that pick to draft Kyle Kuzma. #CelticsPick

Of course, he has turned out to be one of the biggest steals in the draft and showed why tonight.

The Lakers struggled to score in the first quarter as they failed to connect on threes. Their freethrow shooting was its usual self from start to finish. After scoring a season-low 15 in the first quarter, they doubled that up with 30 in the second quarter.

They trailed by 8 at the half, but rallied back to take the lead 4 minutes into the second half.

Kyle Kuzma, looking like a born Celtic Killer, destroyed the Celtics in the fourth quarter. In a scoring frenzy, he was draining threes over defenders, scoring on drives, and making highlight reel passes to teammates for dunks. His 17-point fourth quarter was a thing of beauty.

“I just felt like every time I touched it, I was trying to score,” he said. He was a one-man wrecking crew.

The Lakers were closing in on an 8-point lead behind Kuma, but their season-long nemesis, freethrow shooting, came to play again. Nance would miss his FTs, the Celtics would score on the other end and we had a tight ball game for the next several minutes.

With the Lakers up 6 with 26 seconds left, the Celtics went to foul mode. Both Hart and KCP would miss all of their attempts. Marcus Smart would get the rebound on KCP’s second miss, push it up court with no timeouts, pull-up and missed a three at the buzzer. Ballgame. Lakers hung on to win 108-107.

“We’re still able to win game because we’re defending and playing with a ton of effort and energy and playing for each other at that end of the floor,” Luke said. No day off for the team tomorrow, however, because they missed their FTs today. Back in the gym.

Great game and Luke has the team balling right now.

Randle -- -- With 1:12 left, he grabbed an offensive board and slammed it back in. He had some beastly moments in the second half. He wasn’t able to score early on with just 4 points in the first half, but he was battling on the offensive glass to get the Lakers second chances. He was called for a foul on a missed FT with 19 seconds left, giving up FTs the other way. He’d finish with 5 offensive boards. Because the Celtics are a good defending team, offensive boards would be a huge factor in this one. You’ve got to win those garbage plays in a game like this. The Lakers did with 23 second-chance points. Randle had 10 points in the second half. We started going to him in the post a little more with some success. A 14-14 double-double tonight. Asked what’s up with the freethrows? “Terrible,” Randle said afterward. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 6-12 shooting (2-3 from the line) to go with 14 boards (5 offensive), 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He attacked, spun and was blocked. He forced a jumpball on the offensive glass. He missed a jumphook in the post. He missed a point-blank layup, got it back and was fouled, he made both FTs. He attacked left and scored the layup. Second Half: Out of control on the break, charge. He kept a miss alive, saved it inbounds after a fumble, got it back and scored the And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He was blocked/fouled as he rose up and landed hard on his backside with no call (look like his right arm was hit hard, sending him backwards). He missed a wing jumper on iso. He bullied his man for a layup in the post. Ball in the post again on the left block and he bullied his way for another layup. He missed a turnaround in the post. He got it back at the right elbow, attacked left and scored a layup. Huge putback jam with just over a minute left. He was called for a foul on the missed FT to give up FTs the other way with 19 seconds left.

Ingram -- -- Some of our sketchiest minutes tonight was handing the ball over to him to create on iso. Especially, late in the game after being cold most of the night. The perimeter shot wasn’t falling, the drives weren’t getting shots off cleanly. Man, so lucky, he didn’t get called for a backcourt violation (or get fouled for FTs) at midcourt with 11 seconds left. Lucky, he didn’t throw it away on that play, either. But he found JC who was then fouled. Pretty poor first half going just 1-5 with the team-low -13. To be fair, he looked fouled a couple of times without calls. He was hitting the boards, though, and we needed that. Defensively, we put him on Kyrie down the stretch. As TNT was pointing this out, Ingram blocked a jumper with that length of his. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 2-11 shooting (0-1 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 33 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He sank a wing jumper on the inbounds pass to start the scoring. He missed a long pull-up jumper standing on the three line (step back half a foot, please). He attacked the paint, took contact and missed the fade. He bullied his way to the rim for FTs, he made one. He was stripped on a layup attempt (looked like a sure score). He missed a drive, getting fouled with no call. He missed a long pull-up wing jumper. Second Half: He attacked past his man and drew contact at the rim for FTs (would have liked to see him elevate and dunk, but who knows how the injury is), he made both. Awful shot selection missing a challenged wing fade. He attacked and kicked to KCP for a three. He tucked the ball in and scored a layup in transition. He bricked a break rhythm jumper in the post. Crappy perimeter pass after our play busted, turnover. On Kyrie defensively and he blocked his jumper. On the other end, he attacked in transition, missed but we cleaned up the dribble penetration. He set up Nance for FTs on the two-man game. Bad possession running clock with Kyrie on him and setting for a 21-footer and he bricked. Out of a timeout, he attacked the paint, missed but Julius cleaned it up.

Lopez -- -- Just 6 minutes in the first half. He struggled with his three shot early, so he started attacking off the three line for scores. A little more of an effort to get him the ball in the post in the second half (first play of the half was to him there). I would have liked to a see a bit more of that as the Celtics couldn’t really handle him there. Short minutes, but he was able to scratch out some points and had a really nice block defensive on help D. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-10 shooting (0-4 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He missed a wing three on a kickout. He missed from the same spot a few second later. He attacked off the three line and hit the runner in the middle of the paint. He attacked off the three line again and scored the layup. He missed a wide open wing three. He was fouled on a leaner at the elbow, he made one FT. Second Half: He missed in the post to start the half. He grabbed a long board, attacked, drew contact and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. Great defensive rotation to reject a shot at the rim. He missed an open wing three on a kickout. In the post again and he hit the jumphook. Illegal screen on an inbounds. He attacked off the three line, took contact with no call and somehow made the bank.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He choked both FTs with 5.7 seconds left. Coming in after sitting for a long time, you should still be able to hit freethrows as a professional. After the game, JC focused on his stop on the other end at the buzzer against Smart. It was an okay look for Smart, but KCP was right there. I’m just glad Smart was taking it in hero mode and not someone else. Defensively, KCP had a bad stretch against Kyrie to close the first half after we sat our PGs. He was either giving up good looks at threes or fouling on them. Meanwhile, he was shooting blanks on the other end going 0-4 in the half. He picked it up a little in the second half, sinking a couple of threes in the third quarter. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 2-8 shooting (2-6 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist and 1 foul in 24 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He missed an off-balance three off the elevator screens to start the game. He was blocked on a layup attempt. He missed a wing three. He fouled Kyrie on a three. Wild baseline runner and he missed, probably thought he was getting a foul call. He drew FTs crashing the glass, he made both. Second Half: Good job drawing a charge in the post on a mismatch against a big (his only hope there). He then sank a wing three on a kickout on the other end. He missed a wing three. He sank a three in transition. Poor reach on help D on Kyrie and we gave up a layup. He missed a three on a kickout. He was fouled with 5.7 seconds left up by 1, he choked both.

Ennis -- -- Serviceable minutes defensively. The offense was a little sluggish with him out there. Noticeable difference in pace when he sat. He was a bit more aggressive in trying to get into the paint. His only score came on a drive. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 assist and 3 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: A couple fouls in three minutes. He was blocked on a reverse attempt. Second Half: He attacked off the three line and scored a layup in early offense. He attacked and missed a layup taking some contact. He missed a drive.

Kuzma -- -- So awesome tonight. #CelticsPick. Kid destroyed the Celtics in the fourth quarter. They were talking about him at halftime after scoring 11 points on 4-8 shooting and hitting a couple of threes. Some nice passing on back-to-back sequences to Nance after attacking the paint and that led to layups for Nance. He was just getting warmed up. In the fourth quarter, he went Kobe on the Celtics with 17 points. He was draining threes in guys faces, attacking for scores, tipping in misses and finding Nance once again on a behind-the back pass for a dunk (the second of those in the game). I’m not sure what my favorite play was, but it might be a couple in the middle of that scoring frenzy. The Nance pass on the drive for the dunk was electric. The relocation on the break after giving the ball up and getting it back a second later and drilling the three, just on fire. “His fourth quarter was incredible tonight,” Luke said. He also used Kuzma to space the floor for others, forcing the Celtics to choose to help off him or stay on him. Kuzma is such a handful when he’s breaking down the D with speed and drawing defenders. The more of a passer he becomes in those situations, the deadlier he’ll be. Because, damn, the rest of his game is too difficult to defend when he’s rolling. I’m not sure there is anything prettier on this Laker squad than when Kuzma has it going in all facets of his game. Love the fight in our kids. The Stats: He scored 28 points on 10-16 shooting (5-7 from three, 3-5 form the line) to go with 4 boards, 3 assists and no fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He was tapped on a wing three. He drew FTs in the paint off the drive and dish from JC, he made one. He attacked in transition, spun and banked the one-hander in. He sank a wing three off a screen. He missed a pull-up 18-footer in transition a few seconds later. He swished the sideline three in transition. He missed a jumphook. He attacked and went behind his back to Nance for the layup. Another drive and dish to Nance for a layup. He attacked a smaller player, spun and had his shot goaltended by the help D. He missed a corner jumper trying to beat the shotclock. Second Half: He missed a three just after entering. He saved a busted play out of a timeout by hitting a jumper from the top of the key on iso. He called for the ball and hit the wing three in transition. Quick-fire wing three on a swing pass, right in a defender’s face. Electric attack off the three line, going behind his back again to Nance for the dunk. In transition shortly after that time, he drilled another huge three right in a defender’s face. Heatcheck, fading three and he was fouled for FTs, he made two. He took the ball in the corner next time down, iso’d, spun around his man and hit the short floater. He fed Nance on the break for FTs (nearly a monster dunk). He swiped an offensive board away from the Celtics and scored the putback. He got tapped on an elbow jumper.

Clarkson -- -- He led the Lakers in scoring in the first half with 14 points on 6-10 shooting. We ran him at SG, then PG to close the half. We had to rely on him to bail out the offense some as the shotclock wound down. He dialed it back a little in the second half as he kind of moved aside for Kuzma. How badly did you want him to have the ball in those foul situations? We’ve got to do a better job on our inbounds plays to make sure he gets it. He sank both of his clutch ones with 11 seconds left. His three ball wasn’t going tonight as he missed all four. Credit some of that to the Celtic D as he looked a little off balance and some of the plays we ran for him he had to rush a little. Still, a great scoring game once again. Laker bench had 65 points tonight. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 8-17 shooting (0-4 from three, 6-7 from the line) to go with 5 boards (3 offensive), 4 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnover and 1 foul in 34 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He was stripped in the paint. Great help D to swipe a pass to a cutter. He fed Kuzma for FTs in the paint. He missed an open corner three. He crossed over and switched hands in air to score a lefty layup. He sank a pull-up jumper at the FT line working off the screen. He missed a step-back 15-footer. He attacked left off the three line with the shotclock low and drew FTs, he made both. He blew past a big and was fouled with no call on the miss. He got deep into the paint and scored. He missed a wing three. He crashed the glass for a putback score. He sank a wing pull-up jumper. He iso’d and missed a tough fade. He missed a tech FT. He attacked the big on a switch and scored a layup. Second Half: He got his man in jail and hit the leaning floater in the paint. He missed a floater (I think he had Nance on the lob). He missed a floater, got it back, but carried on the drive for a turnover. He got middle and hit Nance for the layup on the two-man game. He missed a wing three on the wide pin. He attacked in transition for the lefty layup. He missed an off-balance three. Huge offensive board with 26 seconds left. Fouled before the ball was inbounded for FTs, he made both. He was fouled with 11 seconds left up 1, he made both clutch FTs.

Nance -- -- Man, I thought this might be our night when Nance sank a couple FTs earlier in the second half. I was saying to myself, we’re going to need every one of those. Well, we certainly did because Nance biffed it from the line late in the game, making just 1 of 3. Some great chemistry between him and Kuzma tonight. Kuzma setting the table, Nance being in the right spot to finish. Man, I wanted that monster slam to go down over Smart on the break, but he couldn’t finish through the foul. That would have been huge. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-5 shooting (3-6 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He mistimed a tip in attempt. He forced his man into a travel on the perimeter. He scored a layup off the behind-the-back feed to from Kuzma. He scored another layup off the drive and dish from Kuzma. He missed a jumphook, rushed because he was in the paint so long before getting the ball. Second Half: He drew FTs on the offensive glass, he made both. He scored a layup on the two-man game with JC. He was stripped in the paint. He dunked off the behind-the-back feed from Kuzma. He couldn’t finish a dunk on the break but drew FTs, he missed both big ones. Fouled again on a layup attempt off the two-man game, he made just one FT. Offensive foul setting a perimeter screen.

Hart -- -- Another of our guys who failed bigtime at the line tonight. He was fouled with 19.8 seconds left and missed both of his. His been in big situations in college. Not sure if that rookie-ness caught up with him in that moment, however. Painful. He got his two scores tonight at the rim (one in transition and one tipping in a miss). Again, note we had a couple of rookies out there closing for us in the fourth. This is great minutes for them, but also speaks to their abilities. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-4 shooting (0-2 from three, 0-2 from the line) The Action: He attacked in transition and rode it in for a layup over the defender. He missed a two-for-one wing three. Second Half: He crashed the glass and tipped in a missed drive in transition. He missed a wing three. Fouled with 19.8 seconds left up 3, he missed both.

Caruso -- -- You could see the tempo pick up as he entered the game with JC in the first quarter (Lopez also sitting). Scrappy on D, but ultimately not very effective offensively. After missing a couple of FTs in the second half, Luke sat him for the rest of the game, except for a late situational sub to inbounds. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-4 shooting (0-2 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He missed a wing pull-up jumper. He missed a three straight away. Second Half: He might have blocked a shot recovering to his man on a drive (hard to tell as Nance was there, too), but we got the stop. He missed a 70-footer at the buzzer. He attacked right an airballed a scooping layup. He probed the paint and drew FTs, he missed both, however.

Walton -- -- Slow start with the Lakers missing threes or getting blocked in the paint. The Lakers trailed 10-6 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… Caruso and JC in for Ennis and KCP… Kuzma in for Lopez down 3… Down 3 and Nance in for Randle… The Lakers trailed 21-15 after the first quarter. Lakers couldn’t hit a three… He started the Nance, Kuzma, Hart, JC, Caruso lineup… They forced a timeout down 2 as the tempo picked up more and Kuzma started hitting threes… Down 1 when Caruso sat for KCP midway through the quarter… Luke called a timeout shortly later down 3… He went back to Randle and Ingram out of that… Ingram now at PF… The Lakers trailed 53-45 at the half. The Lakers were 2-13 from three (take Kuzma out of that and it was 0-11 from everyone else)… Luke asked them at the half if they were satisfied with winning five in a row at home or did they want to have some fun and extend that streak… They trimmed the lead to 2 getting to the rim and forced an early timeout… The Lakers edged out to a small lead but Luke called timeout after they gave up a layup and trailed by 2… Nance in for Lopez, Caruso in for Ennis, JC in for KCP out of that… Randle out down 2 for Kuzma. Hart in at SF… The Lakers led 76-74 heading into the fourth… He started a Nance, Kuzma, Hart, JC, Caruso unit again… Lakers struggled in the first minute and half to trail by 3 and Luke called a quick timeout… Ingram in for Caruso, Lakers down 4 with 7:35 left… One-man run by Kuzma hitting threes and forcing a timeout on a highlight drive and dish to Nance, Lakers up 1… Kuzma stretched it to a 6-point lead. Timeout Celtics with under 4 minutes left… Lakers up 6 with 26 seconds left. Need to protect the three, switch everything. Lakers gave up a three. Luke was ticked with the D by JC and Ingram on this stand… Lakers up 3 with 11 seconds left after two FTs by JC. Got to get a stop. They gave up a tough layup to lead by 1 with 7 seconds left. Who are your best FT shooters?… Luke brought in Caruso to inbound the ball to go with KCP, who got the ball with 5.7 seconds left. Stone cold, I guess, he missed both. Lakers fortunate there were no timeouts left and Smart missed a three (very close) at the buzzer… “Frustrated that we didn’t make freethrows,” Luke said. He praised the team afterward, “but our execution down the stretch, it’s not okay,” he said…

Great win - It feels like we're finally learning how to win close games. If this was the team playing those close games against the Warriors and Rockets, we would definitely pick up some more wins.

Randle had some trouble defensively at the end. He usually does great against perimeter players. Was he tired?

Great to see us get the win though! So close....!

We are learning to win without Ball! Nice scrappy win despite some sloppy play and missed FTs. It is all coming together slowly....

Thanks DB!! Great writeup on a great win!!!!!!!

Kuzma proving that Jesse Buss and crew picking in the late 20's can still out scout Ainge when he's got a top 3 pick!

Great team effort! I hope Randle's OK tomorrow.

Man this Laker team is turning the corner!! Learning to win even when Ball is on the sidelines healing! Great to see.

Thanks DB! Great win!

I really thought KCP was horrific tonight, and that was before the choked FT's at the end. He made one nice play where he caught the ball near the rim and made the extra pass to result in an easy dunk for a teammate, but other than that, it was brutal. He also twice allowed his man to go right past him for a layup.

I loved watching that game, it felt like the playoffs! Excellent breakdown of all the action. Thanks for your amazing recap Dancing Barry! Kuzma is a remarkable rookie. Tonight was historical clearly his greatest game as a Laker. Most points since Eddie Jones.. This was more impressive as EJ didn't hang a L on the Celtics.
