Soft… You can’t lose to a depleted Magic team. Just an awful game by the Lakers in all facets.

They didn’t impose a single part of their game on the Magic. Defensively, the Magic got whatever they wanted. They collapsed the D easily and set up shooters for open looks, hitting a season-high 18 threes. Once the defense at the point of attack fell apart, the Laker help D was lost.

“We weren’t committed to guarding anyone tonight,” Luke said.

The Magic scored a season-high 43 points in the third quarter, hitting 9 threes in the quarter – a team record. They blew out the Lakers 127-105.

Worst part of a loss like this (aside from having to write it up) is listening to John Ireland inevitably ask every single player if they look at the game tape or throw it out. Why, John? Why?

Randle -- -- Offensively, he was aggressive. He had 10 points on 4-6 shooting in the first half. Some nice work in the paint for jumphooks or drives to get to his strong hand for scores. He and JC led the team with 20 points. Some fumble-itis tonight on the dribble or catching passes. Defensively, he had some bad brain cramps sagging off a shooter like Speights to give up a couple of threes early on seemed to be the way things were going to go tonight. “I obviously didn’t do a good job with that today,” Randle said of trying to balance helping with staying with a shooter. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-9 shooting (6-7 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 1 assist, 3 turnover sand 3 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -21. The Action: He posted up, drop-stepped and banked in the jumphook to start the game. Low position in early offense and he hit a jumpook across the middle of the paint. He missed a wing jumper. He missed an up-and-under. He fumbled away a sure dunk. Quick attack left in early offense and he scored a layup. He drew FTs on the screen-roll with JC, he made both. Nice recovery to his man to force a poor pass. He got the ball in the paint, faked several times before finally hitting the short jumper before getting a violation. He lost the handle on a drive, turnover. Bad D, sagging off Speights to give up a three. Second Half: He attacked left and drew FTs, he made one. He drew FTs in the post, he made both. He dunked off the drive and dish from JC. He crashed the glass and tipped in a miss. He gave up FTs on a foul on the offensive glass with 4 seconds left. They tried to wrap him up in transition but he still muscled in the layup over his head for the And-1, he made the FT. Wild pushout in transition attacking a crowd and easily picked off.

Ingram -- -- Embarrassing on D tonight at times. He just looked awful. Little to no resistance. Offensively, it was a lot of ball stopping to see what he could create, which meant usually some kind of midrange attempt. When the offense is struggling to move the ball, this only makes things worse. Ineffective on both ends. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-12 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 5 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He attacked the paint and was fouled on a dunk attempt, he made one FT. He fumbled an outlet away. He dunked filling the lane on the break. No boxout to give up a putback. He missed a step-back baseline jumper. He got tapped on an elbow pull-up jumper. He hit KCP cutting on the SLOB inbounds pass for the layup. He hit Caruso cutting for a layup. He missed a long wing jumper. He didn’t hit rim on a drive, losing control. He drew FTs on a drive and made both. Second Half: He attacked, spun, nearly fell over but scored. He grabbed a board, saw Larry sealing his man and in transition and hit him for the score. He up-faked, then fumbled the ball away. He got his man in jail and banked in the jumper unintentionally. He missed a midrange pull-up jumper. He gave up a layup on iso. Tied up and once again for a jumpball and he tipped it out of bounds, déjŕ vu, come on. Double teamed, he threw it away. He attacked down the middle of the paint and dunked. He bricked a midrange jumper. He probed and hit a 10-footer in the paint.

Lopez -- -- Frustrating watching him hoist up three after three when you have Speights out there covering him. Post him up. In the second half, they started to look for that, but Brook was only out there a minute and half before Luke had enough and benched everyone. So just 9 minutes for Lopez and he was apparently steamed afterward. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-7 shooting (0-3 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 9 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He kept a missed FT alive. He missed a long step-back three. He sank the 12-footer in the lane. He missed a wing three. Easy score posting up for a short jumphook. He missed a sideline three. Second Half: He missed a baseline jumper. Easy FTs finally going back to the post against Speights, he made one. He bricked a short one in the post.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Some late garbage-time points. Defensively, the point of attack was very weak across all our guards. Clarkson-esque on D. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-9 shooting (1-3 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He pushed out the break and hit Ingram for the dunk. He hit Lopez for the short one in the paint. He scored a layup on the SLOB inbounds. Second Half: He made a tech FT. Bad D giving up penetration with ease and a three off that. He missed a three. He was blocked on a weak pull-up attempt. He missed a pull-up wing jumper. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He hit a wing jumper off the two-man game. He attacked off the three line and scored a layup over the help. He rattled in a three in early offense. He missed an elbow pull-up. He drew FTs on iso on the perimeter, he made both.

Ennis -- -- Couldn’t wait for him to sit anytime he was out there. Some props for his defensive rebounding. He had a couple Lonzo moments there, but man do we miss Zo. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-4 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards and 3 fouls in 10 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He drew FTs and made one, but tipped out the miss. He attacked on iso and wasn’t close on the finish. He missed a three. Second Half: He attacked off the three line and scored a layup. He scored a layup off a drive by Caruso.

Kuzma -- -- Some good moments with his creativity around the rim on a drives. He’s got such a quick first step at times, it’s pretty impressive. That was about the only thing worthwhile in this game. His jumper was MIA. He seemed to be rushing it even more than usual. Defensively, not much fight there. He nearly had a track down block but was a little late and goaltended. It would be nice to see a few more of those blocks. Those have been missing as well lately. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-13 shooting (0-3 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist and 1 turnover in 28 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: Bad miss on a chuck from three in transition (could have got himself under control more before hoisting that). He attacked off the three line with speed and scored a layup. He gave up a layup on an iso drive. Lightning quick first step on a face up and he blew past his man across the lane for the layup. He up-faked, attacked and missed the runner, but Nance cleaned up the dribble penetration. He missed a layup in transition. Quick end change and JC hit him for the transition layup. He missed an elbow jumper. He attacked left across the lane, bounce up quickly and hit with his right from about 8 feet out. Another rushed three and he missed. Second Half: He was fouled on a dunk attempt, he made one FT. He missed a corner three. He attacked baseline past his man for a layup. He missed a jumphook in the paint. He missed a quick-fire wing three.

Clarkson -- -- “They just broke us down, got in the paint and made threes,” Clarkson summed up the Lakers D. He repeated multiple times how the team didn’t keep their guys in front of him. He had 12 points on 5-9 shooting to lead the Lakers in the first half. He did a good job getting his man on his hip and scoring from there. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-14 shooting (2-5 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block and 3 turnovers. He was a -9. The Action: He sank a wing three on his first touch. Quick-fire three from the same spot next time down and he missed. He airballed a step-back wing jumper on iso. He attacked baseline and was blocked. Great bounce pass to Kuzma on the break for the layup. He biffed a break, not giving it up to Nance who was open. He missed a sideline three. He got his man on his hip, probed and scored the layup. Sloppy perimeter pass out of bounds, turnover. He hit a pull-up sideline jumper getting a nice bounce. He sank an open three in transition next time down. He got middle off the Randle screen and bounced it back to him for FTs. He iso’d with the clock low and hit the baseline jumper, just beating the clock. Second Half: He missed a floater, got it back and hit the baseline jumper. He got his man on his hip and hit the floater. He drew an illegal screen call fighting through it. He missed a floater in the paint. He drew FTs getting hit from behind on a floater. Perimeter foul for FTs, he made both. He blocked a shot from behind. He attacked, drew the D and hit Randle for the dunk. He missed a step-back three.

Nance -- -- He was pretty frustrated with the team effort in this one. Seemed like he was working the hardest out there on D, but there were too many breakdowns that it was out of control. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-4 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 3 offensive boards, 2 steals and 3 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He grabbed a Kuzma missed drive and threw it down. He swiped a bounce pass in transition to get a stop. He regained a possession forcing a jumpball off an offensive rebound. He broke up a lob attempt on D to ignite the break. He drew FTs off the feed from Caruso, he made both. Second Half: He crashed the glass, regained balance, pivoted and hit the jumphook. Nice job changing ends, sealing a defender, taking the long pass and scoring. Nice challenge on D to force a missed drive. He missed a jumper from the top of the key.

Hart -- -- Luke went with Brewer in this one. Who knows if that made any kind of difference but the team mojo was nowhere to be found. Hart sank a three for his only points. It was off one of the very rare sequence of decent ball movement tonight. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-2 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 1 board, 2 assists and no fouls in 14 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He got up-faked badly and gave up a layup. He bricked a three on the other end. He sank a corner three off a rare sequence of good ball movement.

Brewer -- -- His turnovers kind of epitomized the Laker focus tonight. Just careless with the ball. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-3 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 4 baords, 1 steal and 2 turnovers in 14 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: Sloppy pass out of a timeout, turnover. He attacked from the wing and dunked. Quick pushout off a rebound to draw FTs, he made one. He swiped a pass and threw the outlet away. Second Half: He missed a drive in transition. He attacked quickly in transition and hit a tough layup attacking left, finishing right.

Caruso -- -- Awful game from him. Too many turnovers and little impact. He was a -19 in 15 minutes. Luke yanked him a couple of times in this game to run without a point guard. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-5 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 15 minutes. He was a -19. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He missed a sideline three. His layup was goaltended after making a nice off-ball cut to get open. He attacked and threw a pass away. He got tapped on a long floater. He missed a corner three. He fed Nance for FTs. Second Half: He attacked and choked an awkward layup. He forced a turnover in the backcourt, then gave it right back on a bounce pass expecting someone to roll. He attacked and hit Ennis for a layup.

Bryant -- -- Down 26, they brought him in with 7:21 left. No rim protection while out there. The Stats: He scored 1 points on 0-1 shooting from three (1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist and no fouls in 7 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He was fouled on a pull-up jumper at the FT line, he made one FT. He missed a three.

Walton -- -- Caruso in for Ennis midway through the quarter, Lakers up 1… Not sure why they aren’t posting up Lopez to abuse Speights… They trailed 18-12 when Luke called a timeout… Kuzma in for Lopez out of that… Lakers down 5 when Nance came in for Randle and JC in for KCP… Poor transition D by the Lakers… The Lakers trailed 29-25 after the first quarter… He started the Nance, Kuzma, Brewer, JC, Caruso lineup… They trailed by 11 before KCP came in for Caruso… Just so sloppy with the possessions… He sat Brewer for Ingram and Kuzma for Randle down 10… They trimmed the 12-point lead to 5 to force a timeout… The Lakers trailed 58-51 at the half. They were 2-11 from three and had 10 turnovers… Same lackluster energy to start the half and Luke called a timeout. Luke immediately benched all of them after a minute and a half down 13… Ingram in for Caruso shortly later… Lakers fell back by 17… Lakers in the bonus early… They cut the lead to 12 to force a timeout midway through the quarter… Randle in for Nance down 13 with 3 to go… KCP back in… They fell back by 18 again… Hart finally in, but Lakers were down big… Just playing so soft as a team… The Lakers trailed 101-81 heading into the fourth… He started Randle, Nance, Ingram, Hart and KCP… Garbage time as it got worse quickly… Down 19 with 3 minutes left, he brought in Ennis for Ingram…

DB, the last time I read a a write up with this much frustration in it, Byron was coaching.

I am glad I missed this one. You are saint for putting in the effort.

If Randle and Nance are out there together, how does Luke have Nance on Biyombo and Julius on Speights? It's a total inversion of their defensive strengths. For crying out loud, Vogel subbed in Speights the moment he saw Julius coming in to replace Larry in the 2nd half. Know your own players, Luke!

When Lopez clanks 3s instead of going in the post its a fast break the other way.

These kind of games just eat me alive. The coaching should have been in their ear knowing that they would let up against a weaker Orlando. Very tough game to watch.

Thanks DB. I find myself annoyed by Ireland's question as well. No. Don't throw the game tape away. Strap a VR headset on each Laker who mailed it in on defense tonight, and make them watch game film non stop all night long, replete with colorful metaphors from the coaching staff blasting at full volume in both ears describing the quality of their effort against the mighty Orlando second unit and deep bench squads. With plenty of slow motion replay for each player so they can fully appreciate every aspect of how they crapped the bed on defense over and over, all night long.

Anyhow, thanks for an excellent write-up DB. Words can't express how much I appreciate you putting up with stinker games like this to bring us the best recaps in the business. I'm pretty certain that's true for a whole bunch of us here.

Kuzma looked amazing on several possessions on the block. Looked like a traditional SF with a quick first step. He truly has the full package to be a great small forward. Hope he can realize his potential as a Laker. But you have to have a coach who knows how to use his players strengths. When you keep rolling out scrubs like Ennis simply because of the label "PG," I wonder about your basketball acumen.

I’m an optimist, but that one was bad and it really ticked me off. It shouldn’t have happened.

Lol. I mean he does this like twice a month and asks every single player. It's an awful question to begin with. Maybe ask it once a year if you must. But, damn, dude don't be so lazy.
