.500 on the Road Trip… Luke tossed Tyler Ennis on the scrap heap and went with Josh Hart in the starting lineup and Brandon Ingram at the point.

Just push the pace, he told Ingram and that’s what he did. They needed it.

The offense struggled from the perimeter in the half court. But the Lakers battled on the glass to turn misses into second chances. They got out on the break for opportunistic scores behind both Ingram and Hart pushing that pace.

In the third quarter, they finally hit on a series of threes to take back the lead. Brook Lopez leading that charge against his former team with a couple of those bombs.

The Lakers bench extended a lead in the fourth. They had a chance to go up by 11 at one point but JC couldn’t finish the easy layup, and the Nets hit a three on the other end. Big switch. As the offense went dry, the Nets reeled them in.

The Lakers would go without a field goal for more than 4 minutes in this stretch until Hart hit a big three with 3 minutes left (he killed it for the Lakers tonight, finishing with 15 points and 14 boards). Lopez would score another key bucket with over a minute left and that would be just enough for the Lakers to hold onto the eventual 102-99 win.

Nice to see the team hold an opponent under 100 again. They’ll have their work cut out for them in the next one. The Thunder have rolled over them.

Randle -- -- He was one of the tone-setters tonight. He had 16 points on 8-12 shooting and 6 boards in the first half. Some beastly moments that had the bench to its feet. Guys just bouncing off him and Julius had several overpowering scores. The Lakers won the offensive glass 18-5. When you are bricking like we did for stretches, this kept the Lakers in it. Love the give-and-go lob passes to Ingram out of the post from Julius. With the game on the line, only up by 2, Luke set up the inbounds play to go to Julius. He was intentionally fouled and made one of two. Got to hit both of those. He’s been money from the FT line lately but wasn’t quite up for that tonight. Just 3 points in the second half and a number of turnovers (one was a travel that didn’t look legit). The Stats: He scored 19 points on 9-16 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 12 boards (4 offensive), 2 assists, 5 turnovers and 1 foul in 32 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: Great lob on the give-and-go with Ingram to start the game. He then posted up next time down, bumped the defender and hit the short jumper in the middle of the paint. He posted up and hit the jumphook. Bad timing on the high-low, throwing it as Brook was spinning, turnover. He attacked Okafor in the post, hung and scored a layup. He missed a post-up, but we got it back. He missed in the paint, Caruso got it and gave it to him (Randle swiped it) and Randle powered up the layup. Turnover not sealing his man on the post entry. He posted up and choked the righty layup right at the front of the rim. He missed a tag on help D to give up a score. He missed a putback (looked fouled). He lowered his head, attacked between defenders and scored the layup. He outmuscled defenders for an offensive board and scored the putback before falling down. He knocked one man over as he pulled up the dribble, bumped another back and powered in the layup (bench on its feet). Another give-and-go lob to Ingram out of a timeout. He waited for the last shot, probed to his left and hit the short baseline jumper. Second Half: He was stripped on back-to-back possessions. He attacked and lost the ball. He took the pass on the screen-roll and hammered a dunk. He attacked, clearly fouled on the floater, but was called for travel when he got the miss back (horrible officiating). Charge in the post (should have gone to Lopez on that possession after his huge block on D). He couldn’t score in the post. We inbounded to him in the backcourt with 8.9 left for the intentional foul up by 2, he made one FT. Not sure if he fouled on a challenge at the buzzer from three, but he recovered and we got a miss.

Ingram -- -- Nearly a triple-double tonight. “We talked to him this morning about starting at the point, but we needed him to tell us he wanted that challenge and we needed to know that he’d push the pace for us and he said he was up for both.” He really did an excellent job of pushing the pace tonight. He and Hart definitely made us play faster than with Ennis out there. When we got into the halfcourt, it was sketchy at times. They tried to keep it simple on the offense. I thought his floor generalling in crunch time was pretty poor. But if you are looking for how he might project as a player, bottle this game up with one earlier in the season where he was used coming off screens to attack and you have the ideal mix. He had 14 points on 4-6 shooting and 5 assists in the first half as he played with purpose from the start. He picked up a couple fouls on help D midway through the first quarter but avoided foul trouble the rest of the game. Some better moments from D in this one on some challenges, but still breakdowns you don’t want to see. In the second half, he shot just 1-8, struggling from the perimeter and on the finish in traffic. He had several scores on the off-ball cuts (some lobs from Randle). I just want to see more of that set up for him versus the pounding the dribble or trying to work on the screen-rolls which can be frustrating to watch. What I really like about this game, though, is how both Ingram and Hart played with speed. If you are going to be playing with Lonzo for years to come, you’ve got to be able to do that (and hit threes…so hopefully that picks up at some point). Having multiple guys who can grab a board, push out and catch the D compromised means you can win games like this where your shots don’t fall. After the game, he had some treatment for a groin strain. So we’ll see what happens with that. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 5-14 shooting (0-1 from three, 6-8 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 10 assists, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He threw down a lob dunk off the give-and-go with Randle to start the game. He attacked baseline and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a pull-up jumper after getting middle (attack that and make the pass instead). He iso’d, attacked right and drew FTs, he made one. He cut off Nance’s offensive board, took the pass and threw down the And-1 dunk, he made the FT. He pushed out the break and hit Kuzma for the dunk. He blocked a jumper on D. He missed a baseline jumper. He took an inbounds, pushed it up court and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He was fouled on the And-1, give-and-go lob attempt with Randle, scoring with his left while his right was held, he made the FT. Second Half: He missed a pull-up from midrange. He missed a three in transition. He didn’t settle for the midrange, attacked, got contact and scored the And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He attacked a crowd, all kinds of contact with no call and he didn’t hit rim. He got middle and hit Randle for the dunk. He hit Lopez on the pick and pop for a three. He couldn’t finish a lob that was there for him. He hit JC for a three. Bad recognition not going to Lopez in the post on a mismatch and instead missing a midrange pull-up. He ran clock and charged. He tried to attack off the screen-roll and threw it away when he was bumped off his line. He attacked and was blocked next time down.

Lopez -- -- Man, the usage of Brook in the last game and this one really was frustrating to watch. We had another clear mismatch in the post. When our halfcourt offense couldn’t execute at all (and you have no point guard), you really need to exploit that advantage. It shouldn’t be that hard to figure out. But it was like pulling teeth to get him the ball in the post, especially down the stretch when we had several scoreless minutes. He had a huge jumphook with 1:27 left when they finally did get it to him. It’s really on both the coaches and the players. We did call a timeout and go to him in the post at one point in this game, so the coaching staff certainly felt like it was something that needed to be done. But we looked like a low hoop IQ team out there with our decision making. Glad we got him minutes in his homecoming and the game really did dictate for him to close this one, as well. He needed to be on the court with how badly we struggled offensively. Defensively, he had some good rim protection at times. A couple mistakes in this one giving up good looks from three, but otherwise solid. Lucky that the Nets went back to their big or we wouldn’t have had him out there to close. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 8-13 shooting (3-5 from three) to go with 3 boards, 3 blocks, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He sank a three on an inbounds pass with the shotclock about to go off. He missed a deep three with the shotclock low. In the post and he hit the jumphook easily. He posted up and missed, getting hacked with no call. Pressure D at midcourt to force a turnover (I think he was ticked at the no call on the offensive end). He coughed it up on the other end in the post. No help on a three shooter to give up a good look to a good shooter. Second Half: Illegal screen in transition, turnover. Easy score in the post on his first touch from there of the half. Easy post up score out of a timeout. He backed his man down and hit the jumphook. He rejected a drive on help D. He sank a three on the pick and pop. Heatcheck 32-footer and he drained it. His floater was swatted out of bounds. He swatted a dunk attempt at the rim on the other end to get revenge. Nearly banked in a prayer three on an inbounds trying to beat the shotclock (kind an amazing attempt). Finally, we get the ball to him in the post in the halfcourt and he hit a jumphook across the lane to go up by 4 with 1:27 left. He missed a tough turnaround with the clock low (why did we wait so long to get it to him, he had to force that one up).

Hart -- -- “I was channeling my inner Charles Barkely,” Josh said. Just a superb job on the glass out of the gates in this one. He was tracking the ball well, with effort, and he gave the team a number of extra possessions. He also turned his defensive boards into quick pushouts and counter attacks. Just a brilliant job in that regard. Combine that with the clutchest three of the game late in the fourth quarter and you have his best game of the year. Defensively, especially in the first half, he was very disruptive. Glad they started him instead of Ennis. When you’d rather start no point guard then your backup…ouch. Big minutes for Hart. You wanted him out on the court tonight because of the impact he was having. He led the team in rebounds and minutes. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-8 shooting (3-6 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 14 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He intercepted a pass and took it the distance for a layup (could have been an And-1). He got an offensive board and reset the offense. He forced a turnover on the other end. Nice recovery to challenge a jumper and force a miss. Another hustle play to get a long offensive board and setup KCP for FTs. Another excellent challenge on iso D to force a miss. Weak second foul with 3 minutes left in the quarter, but Luke left him in for a bit. He airballed a three. He knocked down a pass on D and was fouled for FTs, he made one. He gave up a straight-line layup, but hit the wing three on the other end. He missed a three in transition. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He pushed out the break and dunked with both hands. He sank a wing three on a series of passes. Great rebound from behind a Net, he then pushed out with speed, attacked between defenders and drew FTs, he made one. Huge corner three (getting his feet taken out from him under him, too, with no call).

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Nothing game from him tonight. He couldn’t hit anything from the perimeter and his D was marginal at times. Luke limited his action as a result. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 0-5 shooting (0-3 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 1 assist, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He was called for a double-dribble when it was slapped out of his hands (why call that if you can’t see it?). He missed a three, not really open. He drew FTs on a cut and made both. Quick attack off the catch and he drew FTs on a reach, he made one. He was blocked on a layup attempt. He missed a three in transition. Second Half: He missed a pull-up at the FT line. Poor D on an inbounds give up a layup.

Kuzma -- -- Not a tremendous game from him tonight offensively. The perimeter shot wasn’t there, so he didn’t force it. He missed a couple of easier ones around the rim (although he should have earned FTs on one). Defensively, he had a couple moments there. Once forcing Russell into a break on iso (forcing him to his right). And once with a nice help D dig on Okafor in the post to knock it away. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-9 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 foul in 20 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He missed a layup off a cut. He missed a floater off the Euro-step drive but bounced up quickly to tip it in. He missed a jumper to start the second quarter. He tipped a missed FT to Larry for a dunk. Great help D as Okafor started to pound the dribble in the post, he reached in, knocked it away and the Lakers scored on the break. He dunked on the break with Ingram. He got tapped on a corner three. Fouled on a putback attempt but no call, wow. Second Half: Nice extra pass to Hart for the three. He swished a floater off the two-man game. He missed a three falling back a little. He forced Russell into a break on iso D.

Clarkson -- -- “Just coming in and trying to be a spark,” Clarkson said. No hint of a spark in the first half, but definitely a few in the second half. He hit a series of threes in the second half for his only field goals, but they were all much needed with how badly we were shooting as a team. Defensively, he had some moments in this game. Pressure D to force a turnover or help D to get a block – little plays that were a positive on the defensive end that we don’t see enough of. He still had issues, but at least moments of making things happen. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 3-14 shooting (3-6 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He missed a pull-up wing jumper. Horrible possession getting a shotclock violation after attacking too far into the paint. Awful D on the other end to give up an And-1 layup. Rare pressure D to force his man into a turnover. He missed a pull-up elbow jumper, had Nance rolling. He missed a corner three. He got tapped on a floater in transition. He missed a wide open three. He drew FTs on a probe and made both. Second Half: Bad angle on a close out, but better angle on the drive to force his man out of bounds. He finally scored on a three on a kickout. He hit Kuzma for the floater. He was swatted in a crowd. He sank a three off the chest series kickout. He drained another wing three when the help D stayed in the paint off the screen. He missed a three, this time on a step-back. Great help D block to ignite a break, he missed the layup but was clearly fouled with no call, we still got it back. Great ball-fake in the middle of the lane to freeze the D, but he choked the finish (three the other way, painful 5-point switch). He attacked and threw it away. He bricked a prayer from three up against the clock. He traveled on a drive into the paint.

Nance -- -- “They had the best scoring second unit in the league so our goal was to shut them down a little bit and I think we did a good job,” Larry said. He’s been playing tremendously lately. He and Julius were killing it on the offensive glass tonight (Nance had 8 total rebounds tonight in just 16 minutes). Nance turned one of those into a score. Probably his best offensive play of the night, he actually hit a three trailing the break. Not sure what got into him there, but he didn’t hesitate and knocked it down. Show me that some more. Maybe we will see it more as season goes on. Would have liked to see some better D against DLO at times. He was rocking the Larry Nance Sr. T-shirt tonight ready for the Slam Dunk Contest. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-5 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 8 boards (4 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and no fouls in 16 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He gave up a layup to Okafor. He grabbed a loose ball and dunked. Trailing the break, he gathered himself and drained the three. He grabbed an offensive board and hit Ingram cutting for the And-1 dunk. He one-handed down an offensive board and powered back up the layup. He missed a FT jumper. Second Half: He wanted a foul on a missed jumphook, getting shoved. He tied up a man on an offensive board for a jumpball, but couldn’t win it.

Brewer -- -- The team had some good stretches while he was out there. He had a great steal near midcourt that he saved back into Ingram to ignite a break. He attacked on a couple scrambles for scores. He kind of thrives in those garbage/scramble sequences and there were a few of those tonight. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-6 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 3 boards (2 offensive), 1 steal and 3 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: Bad close out to give up an And-1 layup. He curled into the paint to take a pass, contact and score the layup. He couldn’t finish a layup on the drive and dish from Kuzma. He swiped a pass at midcourt and saved it back to Ingram for a breakaway score. He missed a corner three. Second Half: He scooped up a loose ball, attacked and hit the floater. No box out and he gave up an offensive board, better hustle to prevent that from happening a few seconds later. Wide open from three, he attacked a crowd but still scored the layup. He missed a follow tip on the break, but we recovered the ball.

Caruso -- -- He was scoreless tonight and had just 1 assist in his minutes. He missed both of the threes he took. I’m never confident that these are going in with how high the arch is and his form. He needs to have better games so Luke isn’t tempted to play Ennis. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting from three to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 1 turnover in 11 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: Nice effort on the offensive glass to recover a miss and give it to a teammate for a score (Randle might have just taken it from him). He didn’t hit rim on a three. Wow, horrible pass in transition right to the Nets, turnover. Second Half: He missed a three on a busted play to start a quarter. He hit JC off the chest series for the three. He stripped a man on a drive.

Walton -- -- Some credit tonight for tossing out Ennis from the starting lineup... Ingram out midway through the quarter with two fouls for Caruso, Lakers up 4… Kuzma in for Lopez and DLO in, Lakers up 3… Lakers up 7 to force a timeout (just killing it on the offensive glass)… JC in for Hart who picked up his second foul with 3 minutes left. Great D by Hart to start and some excellent rebounding… Brewer in for KCP with 2 minutes left up 5… Nance in for Randle, Lakers up 2… Poor close by the bench and they trailed 26-24 after the first quarter… He started the Nance, Kuzma, Brewer, JC, Caruso lineup… Ingram back in for Caruso… Hart in for Brewer, Lakers up 2… Starters with JC instead of KCP, score tied midway through the quarter… Kuzma in with a couple minutes left after Lopez gave up a three on D, Lakers up 3… Lakers led 59-57 at the half. Nets shot 55%... Lakers missing jumpers in the first half, missing a bunch more to start the half… Lakers trailing by 8 when the timeout came. The team was unable to score in the halfcourt and couldn’t get the break going… JC in for KCP with 4:10 left, down 7… A couple threes by Lopez and they forced a timeout down 1… Kuzma in for Lopez, Nance for Randle, down 1… They were tied up 85-85 heading into the fourth… He started the Nance, Kuzma, Brewer, JC, Caruso lineup. They need to win their minutes… They pulled out to a 6-point lead off a couple threes by JC and forced a timeout (thankfully, his three ball showed up)… They stretched it out to an 8-point lead when the timeout came… Ingram in for Brewer out of that… They were about to go up 11 but JC choked the finish in the paint, a couple scores later and Luke called a timeout up by just 4… Brook and Randle in for Nance and Kuzma out of that… Lakers holding the Nets off, just barely. Big three by Hart helped… Lakers up by 3 with 8.9 left after Randle made one of two FTs on the inbounds pass to him… Better three shooting in the second half and the Lakers were a very respectable 39% from three in this one…

Thanks DB!! Great to pull this one out at the end!

Hart is showing he belongs on the playing floor. Ennis can sit down, and KCP can make room.

Kudos to Julius Randle, Larry Nance, Brook Lopez, Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart. Way to dig out a win on the road! Love the clutch shooting from Hitman!

They play hard tonight.

Like to see BI pass sometimes when he is driving to the hoop I think it would open things up for him a bit

I caught the end of this game with my dad and we were both absolutely baffled why the Lakers weren't going down to Lopez in the post when he was being covered by Carroll. I mean come on! I know he was fronting and Allen was cheating from the weakside but there are ways to get your big man the ball in good position in the post. Freaking use those.

This was a fun game.

Look forward to Magic Johnson having a teaching session on throwing the ball effectively into the post plus Lopez has to make himself more available considering our ineptness of getting the ball to him

Thank you sir for the extensive write up. I wasn't able to watch the game (rarity) and the first thing I did when I woke up was read this thread. Seems like I missed a great game.

Dancing Barry....don't ever think we take you for granted!

Well done sir!!

Thanks DB! It was ugly at times but the effort is there and we got a nice win. Hoping we get Ball back soon and can stabilize the lineup with the right rotations.

Thanks DB. All of LG appreciates your efforts.

I really really like this team. When Stu reminded us that we are the youngest team in the league, it puts all these losses into perspective. I'm hoping we keep the young nucleus together. I'd like to see Kuz, Randle, BI, Zo, Clarkson, and Hart be no better than 3rd-5th options playing off of Bron/PG13. The expectation this year should be on development of the kids and show enough promise that Bron/PG13 can see that with their leadership (and cheap vet ring chasers) this Laker team can do damage.

Not gonna lie, I still got a soft spot for D'Lo. Watching him effortlessly get off any shot he wanted against us naturally had me fantasizing about a Lonzo/D'Lo backcourt. Even his misses looked good. He is so smooth and confident with his game. If we kept him I believe we'd be at least an 8th seed right now given the many winnable close games we loss this year.

It's a toss up. He seems to have more winning DNA and defensive instincts, but Kuzma has much better scoring instincts and moves. Really it's just a matter of preference imo.

Yeah I had to vent briefly in the game thread at the end of the first quarter - there was no way the game should have been tied or even close with Randle and Lopez completely owning them every time they tried to score down low. It should have been a one-sided blowout, the Nets had no answer. It was clear Randle could get anything he wanted down there. Same for Brook, it was his night too, matchup and crowd. Why on Earth not exploit a gaping mismatch down low, where the ppp for our players is going to be highest anyhow? WTF.

Yep, glad we won, with BI filling in at point. Hope we get our floor general back soon.
