One of the best parts of the show to me:

'FRASIER' STAR
JOHN MAHONEY
DEAD AT 77

I rarely watched the show(usually did when a Cheers crossover took place)

But he and Eddie the Dog had great chemistry with one another.

I still laugh whenever I see that episode where he was trying to come up with a theme song for the Cheers bar and every rendition was just a variation of "Old McDonald."

He was great in "Eight Men Out" as well.

Another actor I thought had died years ago.

Frasier was actually better than Cheers, and I loved Cheers.

Noooo! One of my favorite shows of all time.

Did you know he was actually born and raised in England and lost his accent working here? That's such a unique story.

RIP Martin Crane

Different shows with different themes, objectives and subject matter. Cheers laid the ground work for the sensibilities amongst the audience that allowed a show like Frasier to even exist outside of the obvious spinoff connection. There's no way to rank one over the other. They both were excellent at what they were attempting to do at the time and context and both nailed it.

I'm a first generation American of deep British roots. No Brit who was truly raised there ever loses their accent, they just learn to control when they use it. And they get very good at both doing that, and exploiting it when it's useful.

Kinda like Christian Bale doing his interviews in an American accent but berating the director with a British one.

He was a very talented man. I remember him in a role as the corrupt DA in "Primal Fear", and I think he also played the judge in the film "Suspect", starring Cher. Speaking of Cher, of course he had a small but memorable role in "Moonstruck."

RIP.

Yep.

My mom was very adept at turning on and off her accent and adjusting it to circumstance. She would dial up her British accent with Americans when she knew it would be advantageous and then slip into her childhood, Northern England dialect when dealing with fellow Brits, especially when talking to people from her range, Newcastle/Sunderland.

I agree. I just think Frasier had a slightly extra gear.

'Frasier' star John Mahoney's cause of death revealed

"Frasier" star John Mahoney died Sunday of a slew of health woes, including brain disease and cancer.

The beloved sitcom dad's official cause of death includes brain disease, lung cancer and seizures, TMZ reports.

The 77-year-old, who was also reportedly suffering from kidney disease and diabetes, was cremated.

Mahoney starred on "Frasier" as Martin Crane, the father of Kelsey Grammer's eponymous star and David Hyde Pierce's Niles Crane.

Grammer took to Twitter Wednesday to remember his on-screen dad with a sweet photo of the two in an embrace.

"He was my father," Grammer wrote. "I loved him."

The British-born, Chicago-bred Mahoney's legacy during the show's 11-season run included two Emmy nominations and two Golden Globe nominations. He previously won a Tony Award for best featured actor in a play for "The House of Blue Leaves" in 1986.

His decades-long career also included notable roles in films like "Say Anything" and "Eight Men Out."

The best thing they (occasionally) brought over from Cheers was Lillith. She had great chemistry with Frasier and they were so funny together.

Thank god Diane only made 2 cameos.

Yeah, it certainly presented opportunities to step into a more cerebral sense of wit.
