I don’t see a specific thread discussing the trade so here goes:

Can someone please prove to me why this was a good trade on our end? My understanding is we got the Cavs first round pick (probably 25ish) which you would hope could one day turn into a player like Larry Nance. At the same time we lost Clarkson who had some value and was on a reasonable contract. Meanwhile we picked up a 5’9” team cancer who nobody wants and took on an overpayed Channing Frye. I just don’t understand the trade from our end. Perhaps I’m missing something? I’d like to hear the arguments on both sides.

I've gotten over the initial shock and no longer think it's a bad trade but I still don't see it as an A+ trade either. It's B+. It's really too early to tell though....

It's basically cap space to sign two max plus maybe keep Randle plus still having a pick plus still staying competitive this year.

I'm gonna miss Nance and JC, but it has definite positives. We've secured more cap room, and gained a first round pick. That said, we also helped make Cleveland a much better team in a few hours. And if our aim was to pursue Lebron James this summer, I think we may have hurt our chances on that front. Like Chronicle said, it's too early to tell.

It’s gonan be nice to see they can’t leave nance wide open anymore. If they leave Fry they’ll pay.

We def got worse on defense tho. Even tho I think Clarkson and IT are very comparable defensive players

Let's put it this way, Dlo+JC+Nance+Mozgov for 2 max in 2018 or 2019... that's called a home run (I know, grade still incomplete but we're def all in with the plan)

And helped an Owner who was the prime reason for the CP3 trade veto.

this is a great trade if we got a 1st rounder out of it, since both players are on expiring contracts, we could careless about how they play

Lakers were able to trade Clarkson for expiring contracts that are actually players that could help us to continue to win now, On top of they got a first round pick out of it! In addition, they saved an extra 2.3 million off next years books with Nance's contract.

Objectively, it's a good trade. Subjectively, I don't like it.

Without knowing JC's true value in the negotiations (was it positive or negative?) it's hard to really gauge if this was a win or not. Thomas clearly had negative value so I suspect those two balanced out somewhat. What's left is a future, potentially lottery 1st for Nance, which I don't think another team would have given up.

Incomplete. Clearing cap space is worthless if you don't end up doing something with it. So now we have four medium to large expiring contracts. If we sign Lebron and PG, great. If we sign PG, we wasted assets to clear cap space we couldn't use. If we roll over to 2019, we're a laughingstock.

Magic and Pelinka get an A for this one. To me they had three objectives at the deadline if they were to make a trade (1) get better from a personnel standpoint, (2) create additional cap space, and (3) get back into the 1st round of the draft.

This trade accomplishes 2 and 3, and I think Frye can help space the floor. IT isn't healthy, he's lost his explosiveness... if he was healthly he likely wouldn't have been traded. I wouldn't be surprised if he never suits up for the Lakers, he needs to be rehabbing his injury.

I would have been fine with this trade even without the pick, just for the creation of cap space. But to a also get a first-round pick out of this makes it a winner.

I assume Magic/Pelinka used the Cavs' desperation and dysfunction against them to pry that pick away (I guess it is top 3 protected at that). Lakers won this trade.

It's the Cavs' 2018 first right? How is that a lottery pick?
I wouldn't have traded Nance for the 25th pick overall. Nance is what you hope the 25th pick turns into.

I was told that JC could be moved for expirings easily by this regime, so by their own word it's hard for me to get excited about one part that I feel neutral (salary dump of JC) and another part that I think is a bit wanting.

I'd give the trade a B-, but if JC's trade value were actually lower than two expirings (which I suspect it was) then I give it a B+.

Of course, these grades are contingent on what happens with the cap space.

I feel it was slightly better than the Dlo trade. Not a homerun but a pretty shrewd move that gives us even more options to work with if plan A fails this summer.

Realistically, it is too soon to tell.

As an emotionally invested fan, I hated it.

After reading LG, I've come to terms with it.

IT and Frye for JC + Capspace = +

Nance for a very late 1st = expensive.

It all comes down to how much we need an extra $15M in capspace in the summer. If it's used well, then good trade.

His family lives there and it's where his dad played so maybe it's a great place for him
