http://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/22366181/tweet-speedskater-shani-davis-account-rips-flag-bearer-coin-toss

Quote:
It was a feel-good story for a few hours: Luge veteran Erin Hamlin gets the chance to enter her last Olympics carrying the U.S. flag into the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Games, winning that distinction after a vote by some of her fellow athletes.

And then Shani Davis tweeted.

With that, the entire process was called into controversy. The tweet posted to Davis' account said the process by which Hamlin won was executed "dishonorably" and included a reference to Black History Month -- raising the question of whether the speedskater was suggesting that race played a role in the decision.

You know what's dishonorable? Ripping a process you know full well was conducted as the process is laid out because you didn't prevail in the tie-breaker.

The "D" in Davis clearly stands for douchebag..

I think of it as the curling tournament that gets held every four years.

It's difficult to get excited about the winter olympics, but I look forward to figure skating and some Nordic events like ski jumping. Hockey doesn't feature NHL players, so I'll probably skip that.

Meh.

not trying to defend him but I thought his argument is that it should not have came to a coin toss to begin with him carrying a clearly more impressive resume.
If he was white would the votes still have been split 4-4 and go to a coin toss? who knows
but he still comes off as a petty whiny douche

I was little enthused to see the women's snowboarding after all the Chloe Kim hype but after watching a two-minute clip on YouTube I'm over it. Just don't know enough about the sport to appreciate why she's so much better than the competition and I generally dislike all sports, with the exception of boxing, with subjective scoring.

I read an article about her in SI the other day. She seems like a good kid. Hope she gets her gold.

They showed 3.5 hours of coverage on NBC4 yesterday, most of it was live from 5-8:30, with it repeating later on again from 8:30-12. I think the TV format doesn't work well with the Olympics at least here in the USA, since it was like 10 minutes of action followed by commercial, rinse and repeat. So you missed a lot of stuff. If you are really into the Olympics you pretty much have to stream the events, otherwise you are at the mercy of the TV director.

Oh yeah. I've always hated that about Olympic coverage. I expect we'll see a lot of the U.S. athletes (Vonn, Kim, Chen, etc) who've been featured in the NBC promos with whatever remaining airtime given to the events which draw the most viewers.

And this is Erin Hamlin's last Olympics so there's the counter. He's still got an opportunity or two to do this. Now that he's complained, he likely doesn't anymore versus if he kept his mouth shut.

This article sums up the issues I have with Pyeongchang (Pyongyang?)

And now news that there will be a summit meeting between the despot and the traitor... Wonder how much this government had to pay off NK? Being held hostage again; they'll never learn...

It wasn't someone trying to defect from North Korea was it?

Go Chloe Kim! She just took the gold for the US in women’s halfpipe. At 17!!

What an awesome story. And to think she could have competed at Sochi but it was only an age restriction that kept her out.

Did double 1080s in her final victory run too. Dayum.

She’s the female Shaun White.

Amazing. And did you hear that they allowed her to qualify for Sochi in 2014, when she was just 13 years old, and she qualified!

But because of her age, she wasn't allowed to compete.

If there were no age restrictions, she could have medaled as a 13 yr old in the Olympics. Crazy.

Harmless mistake.

But they need to tighten up the quality controls.

Has anyone noticed that around a third of NBC's coverage, if not more, is just human interest stories? Between that, the commercials, and the commentary, less than half of the time spent watching is devoted to the actual competition.
