if cavs dont take bad contract, then it becomes much less attractive.
the only difference is $5M between randle/pg/lebron
we can probably trade deng for 2018 1st and 2020 1st to Bulls or Atlanta.
So cavs has competition.
Their edge in getting the deal is Lebron wants to give his hometown something when he leaves again |
Again, you are overlooking the salary tax implications of the Cavs taking on Deng's contract.
I doubt the Cavs are going to pay $70 million for a couple of low first-round picks.
If anything, if Lebron leaves I could see them going the other direction and shedding salary. |
i am not sure on the rules, but i think you can trade cap hold players also?
deng accounts for 18m
then you have another 17-21m remaining because of their trade exception?
that could get them another player if correct
perhaps kcp's rights if it is relevant |
No offense, but you don't know the trade rules.
if not, i presume a sign and trade works also if timing works.
The bottom line is if they trade Lebron for players, the Cavs will pay a huge amount in tax. You eitther get that or you don't. If you don't, there's not much more to say. |
that is why i posed the cap hold as a question - whether it can be traded.
regarding big contract vs. lost of talent. i am not sure. if you look at the cavs, they dont have a bad team if lebron leaves.
they have hill/clarkson/thompson/love as the core.
they will probably have a top 7 draft pick to bring in a key talent in a really top heavy draft.
they can use that top pick as the 'draw' for the next big talent.
in that case, i would rather spend more to bring in more talent to sell tickets.
you can make money by saving money.
or you can make money by spending money to make the product garner more interest.
i dont know their attendance revenue, so it is hard to discuss which works better for them. |

Comes off the bench on the new revamped James-centric roster.
Randle and others gone creates depth issues. He is a trusted professional vet that will fit the less athletic slower paced style the Lakers will be playing once the James circus comes to town. Hopefully can still provide some defense. |

Out for no salary back with a 2019 and 2021 1st rd picks.
Was always my favorite scenario and only makes more sense now as it allows you to keep Randle, get two max slots, or carry forward 2 max cap room if that doesn't work - which would probably be very difficult to do if we had Deng's stretch amount on the books in 2019. |

Yup. that's how I see it too - unless some team agrees to take him for only one 1st rd pick, in which case you gotta take advantage of the opportunity. |

The reason we couldn't get much for Randle was because he's an RFA this summer, and we want to give up the kitchen sink for someone who's an UFA? The way I see it, if we really have to, Deng plus picks should do it while taking some salary back, preferably coming off the books by 2019. We should target the Bulls, they have one of the worst FO's in the league and may just bite. |

I predict all our forwards are out one game,Deng is activated out of necessity and he scores 50 with 20 rebounds. |

Deng and two first rounders to the Bulls this offseason in exchange for a top 55-protected second round pick. |

Nah. If he got stretched, a few teams would want him. He would be a great veteran presence and he could still contribute on the right team with the right system |

sure this will go over like a fart in church.....
"if" the Lakers are successful in signing 2 Max players this summer (Lebron & PG-13), Deng will be traded with either Ball or Ingram attached.....or potentially even both....Depending on if something and what something comes back.
Scenario #1 - Lebron & PG-13 sign, and the Lakers seek a 3rd Max/Near Max FA signing (Cousins, Paul,?). They will need to free up another $25ish Million, and they will need to get off that money with nothing returning. Teams that are still early in their rebuild with cap space (Atlanta, Chicago, Sacramento) would likely take on the Deng contract into their cap space if either Ball or Ingram was attached. My assumption is it would likely be Ingram unless a PG such as Chris Paul is the target.
Scenario #2 - Lebron & PG-13 sign, and the Lakers seek a 3rd fringe star that is under contract, or multiple pieces (win now players). They will seek to trade for the player(s) using the Deng contract with either Ball or Ingram as sweetener's.
Scenario #3 - Lebron & PG-13 sign, and the Lakers seek a 3rd Superstar that is under contract. They will need to use the Deng contract and heavily sweeten it which likely will require at least 2 of the 3 (Ball, Ingram, Kuzma) included. Consider if the Pelicans are unable to resign Cousins, and begin to consider moving Anthony Davis....or the TWolves flame out in the playoffs and they think Butler may leave in a year....or if a rift really does take shape between Kawhi and the Spurs FO....in any of these circumstances those teams might would consider a package built around Ball, Ingram, and Deng.
Scenario #4 - Neither Lebron or PG-13 sign, or only one of them sign with the Lakers. Deng will be on the roster and cap sheet next year.
As I originally stated, this is contingent on signing both Lebron and PG-13 this summer. They can make all the glowing remarks in the media about our young players, but I think it is wishful thinking to believe that they would desire to sign in LA to play with young unaccomplished players.....especially Lebron whose window would likely only be a couple years. I do not think Lebron would sign anywhere that he did not feel he has a chance at a championship immediately....and Ball, Ingram and Kuzma will not be playing in the Finals next season unless something drastic and unforeseen took place. |

PG and LeBron plus this roster is better than Houston and have a chance against GSW. No way you trade Zo or Ingram at this point. |

they are not...and its not really that close. On paper, Lebron and PG-13 alone would likely make us the 3rd best favorites in the West (behind GSW & Houston) and 4th in the league (behind GSW, Houston and probably Boston w/ Hayward). |

They are handling this all wrong. He won't take a buyout?
1. Assign him to the G League.
2. Run him hard in practice. Have him run lines and laps for an hour.
3. Have him do 3 ice-baths a day.
4. Play him 35 minutes a game.
5. Let him enjoy bus travel on the road and team motel.
6. Offer him a one-time buyout, or it's non-stop laps and 35 minutes, buses and motels. |

you got to take account of what lebron would see in houston.
they have 80m committed for 2018 already WITHOUT paul, capella and ariza.
they would have to give away players to clear space for lebron.
if lebron joins, rockets, there will be no paul, capella or ariza.
it would be lebron (barely), harden and gordon - that is it.
there is ryan anderson making 20m
if i were lebron, i would rather go to lakers to rockets to win as much as possible in next 3 years. |

our discussion was not about Lebron going to the Lakers or Houston? It was in reference to the current Houston team and an LA team with Lebron & PG-13. maybe I am misunderstanding. |
