A little help along the way is acceptable, but not this much help.

even if you cannot trade the cap hold player you can do a sign and trade

Yes, but that isn't what you initially wrote.

If all (player and teams) agree on a sign and trade, the situation/status is changed from a cap hold to an actual contract.

A cap hold is an implied financial obligation to slow teams down from gaming the system with Bird Rights and similar. Since a cap hold isn't an actual contract between a player and a team, attempts to trade it will fail.

that is why it was said with a ?
the main point is cavs want the 2 picks.
and lebron would want cavs to get something like when he left the 1st time.
trading the cap holds would have been nice.
a sign and trade would be the alternative.
the key is deng serves as a useful tool for half of bron's salary.
we need to dig up the other 17m for the trade.
actually probably less than 17m since cavs have trade exceptions that may not have expired by then.

They are handling this all wrong. He won't take a buyout?

1. Assign him to the G League.

2. Run him hard in practice. Have him run lines and laps for an hour.

3. Have him do 3 ice-baths a day.

4. Play him 35 minutes a game.

5. Let him enjoy bus travel on the road and team motel.

6. Offer him a one-time buyout, or it's non-stop laps and 35 minutes, buses and motels.

You missed

7. Force him to sweep out the gym.

I can only hope you are having some fun with a bad situation and not blaming this on Deng.

Lakers chose to dramatically change direction with their plans. They chose to bench him to develop the young players. They chose his role, not Deng.

From all accounts he is being a absolute professional during this. Attending practices and working with the young players. Goes on road trips and attends games but stays in the locker room instead of being a distraction on the bench. Has not complained or made negative comments in the media.

Trying to "punish" him somehow for the FO's decision would only backfire and needlessly antagonize the situation.

I would love for him to accept a low ball buyout. Hell even a somewhat painful "fair" one would work for me. But apparently they can't come to terms. Very likely just as much a decision from the Lakers standpoint as from Deng's.

the problem is we do not want to do the buyout.
we want to trade him with picks to clear the entire salary.

I get it. However they prefer moving him on. Still not Deng's doing though.

Lakers changed their minds. Similar to an investment and a penalty for an early withdrawal. When they chose to go down this current path I'm fairly certain the subject of dumping Deng's contract came up. And the problems in moving it.

salary dump going to chicago

The best scenario for us . Him going to Chicago for our 2018 Cavs pick and 2nd round picks. Hopefully Zu can show promise so we add him to sweeten the pot but I think Chicago will also ask for our 2020 pick. We should do it if we get our 2 game changers this off season. Chicago will do it because they are still rebuilding and they have cap space and they need to collect draft picks. Otherwise just stretch him and get over with.

I'd say Deng gets thrown in as an expiring contract on a summer 2019 or February 2020 trade. 1 max FA until then, 2nd max comes once he goes.

I was thinking along those lines too. If the Lakers only sign 1 FA in 2018, wait as you suggest until summer 2019 to move Deng. He should be easier to move with only 1 year left and now an expiring contract.

2018: Sign PG
2019: Trade Deng/1st, Sign Klay

Avoid King James and all his drama. Be open to signing a max FA in 2019.

Not true. If the Lakers are gonna wait until 2019, stretching him now makes no sense. They could just hold onto him a trade hm next summer when he would then be an expiring contract and much more easier to move.

It appears that you are misinterpreting what rogers49 meant.

Why is July 1 the key date for stretching Deng?

If he agrees to the buyout how does that affect the cap? Would we be able to stretch the buyout amount?

If Deng won’t do the extend and stretch, then maybe we could unload him for a lesser bad contract at the cost of a pick. I assume we could stretch the smaller contract for a smaller hit on the cap and create more space.

Maybe Mitch becomes the GM of the Hornets, then we can send him his Deng signing as a redemption move for almost screwing this team up for years to come.

Well signing Deng was a sign that we have no chance of getting free agents, and seeing what the Warriors are doing right now and have no chance of beating them anytime soon might as well.

Traded to Minnesota pre-draft for Dieng who is sent to Atlanta to replace Desmond who will opt out. Atlanta will send LA Plumlee who has a 2-year $25M deal ($11M less than Deng). LA negotiates a buyout with Plumlee for $22 million and stretch. As part of the whole deal, Deng agrees to reduce the guarantee on his final year to $10 million.

In the unlikely event that both George and James want to sign, Deng will be stretched over five seasons because $7 million extra cap space isn't worth the two draft picks it would cost to move him.

In the more likely even that only one or neither of those guys want to sign, then Deng will agree to a buyout because otherwise management will make it clear that he will be carried into next season and continue to see no playing time. He won't accept another season of that. Lakers will then stretch the remaining amount from the buyout to free up an additional $2-3 million of cap space.

i think you need that last few million if you want to keep randle.
zubac/bryant add another 1.3m or so over minimum contracts

Is the extend and stretch really not a viable option? If it is legal, do it.

Next option would be to trade him + a 1st to Bull for Asik.

July 1 is the first day of free agency. Before you can go and make a pitch to Lebron and PG and possibly keep Randle, you need to know what your working with, money wise. If you are gonna try to convince Lebron to take "X" amount of dollars so that we can still sign PG and keep Randle, Deng need to be stretched. If you are gonna wait and sign 1 max guy and roll the rest over til 2019, no need to stretch him.

People forget LeBron is a rental this season and can bolt. There is no reason to trade for LeBron, if he wants to come he'll do so willingly at seasons end.

Deng may end up in one of two situations;

1- filling Brewer's limited minutes shoes when this season is over or
2- stretched IF we have an incoming star

That's it.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, however, the Lakers have virtually given up on moving Deng via a trade.

“You talk to teams around the league, no one is bailing the Lakers out with Deng’s contract. They’re not," he reported on the Full Court Press show (h/t Lakers Outsiders). "Teams have asked for multiple first-round picks. They've asked for Brandon Ingram. They’ll ask for Kyle Kuzma. The Lakers have essentially given up on the idea that they can trade Deng."

I'm not sure if they didn't want to give up two of their own or the Cleveland pick moves the needle but Woj sounded like they didn't want to do any picks
