No D, No W… Both teams scored plenty of points in this one. The Lakers just let the Mavs go off.

Each team got off to a hot start, tied up 21-21 midway through the first quarter when newly acquired Isaiah Thomas came in the game off the bench. He’d help the Laker second unit pull out to an 11-point lead at one point. The Lakers would lose that, however, to lead just 66-65 at the half. Isaiah scored 16 points on 5-8 shooting and 4 assists off the bench in that first half.

Defense was stressed by Luke at intermission. To start the half, the Mavs went 5-5 and we continued where we left off.

Dallas pulled out to an 8-point lead in the fourth. The Lakers reeled them in to take the lead back. The matchups down the stretch cost them.

The Lakers had trouble with Kleber on both ends. He was able to deny the Lakers scores in the paint, then get points himself on the other end and a killer offensive board in the final minute. The Lakers fell 130-123, allowing Dallas the most points they’ve scored in a couple of years.

The Lakers didn’t hold the Mavs to under 30 points in any quarter. Certainly, Thomas’s D will be in the spotlight, but it was starters and the bench tonight. Everyone out there. When IT was on the bench, our D was awful. When he was out there, it was awful.

“We stopped communicating. I’m not sure why, but it was simple,” Luke said of the defense, especially the switches. “Things we’ve been doing really well. Things we’ve been doing all year long, we stopped doing tonight.”

Randle -- -- From his first touch, he was drawing double teams. We mentioned the gravity he has had in recent games. This was more extreme than we’ve seen. Part of that helped him to a team-leading 5 assists in the first half. He’d still power in 15 points on 6-8 shooting in his 18 minutes in the first half. He’d finish with a 26-8-7 line (but with 5 turnovers…had a couple travels tonight). He hasn’t seen that kind of double teaming and neither has the team so it will be an adjustment. But still, that says a lot about his growth as a player this year. Defensively, we struggled all night and never had the Mavs on their heels. “It started with me and Josh,” Randle said of the defensive issues. He said they weren’t talking, weren’t getting stops. Those two definitely need to set the tone defensively. “We got to get back to defending,” Randle said. He looked gassed late in the third quarter. Hands on the knees a lot, started to get a little foul prone and missing FTs. Luke ran him a long stint then, but he’d finish with the team-high 37 minutes. The Stats: He scored 26 points on 10-14 shooting (6-8 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 7 assists, 5 turnovers and 6 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He missed a short one in the paint. He kicked out to KCP for a three. He pushed out a rebound coast-to-coast for a layup. He was called for a travel on a spin move. He sank a toe-on-the-three line wing jumper. He drew the D and kicked to Ingram for three. He hit Isaiah for a three. He posted up, worked between a double team and banked in the And-1 jumphook, he made the FT. He was called for a charge on iso. He crossed over and powered a layup in going to his left. He was blocked on a drive. He posted up on the right block and muscled in a layup before the double could come. He drew FTs fighting for post position, he made both. He scored a layup off the drive and dish from IT. Second Half: He scored an And-1 layup between a double team off a good passing sequence, he made the FT. He dunked off the no-looker from KCP. He dunked filling the lane on the break with speed. He was tied up on the offensive glass, our guys didn’t get the jumpball. He kicked to Hart for the three. He grabbed an offensive board, drew a double team and hit Ingram for three (had a man open under the hoop but didn’t see him). He muscled his way to FTs on a drive down the lane, he missed both (looking tired). He settled and missed the 17-footer from the wing. He was fouled off ball for FTs, he made both this time. He was called for a travel, changing pivot feet against a double team. He was blocked in the post going against a taller defender. He was called for using an off arm on a screen-roll. He attacked and powered in a layup out of a timeout. He fouled out having to take a foul with 17 seconds left after we missed, he was ticked at the refs.

Ingram -- -- Loving the three shooting (he went 4-5). It’s looking automatic to me. He had 12 points on 5-7 shooting at the half, sinking both of his threes and would keep up that pace in the second half. Mostly the third quarter. He didn’t see the ball a lot in the fourth. We deferred to Isaiah. I’d much rather have Isaiah running the screen-roll, but I think both would benefit from coming off screens for handoffs and attacking unless IT gets his bounce/explosion back. Defensively, he had a key miscue not boxing out a big in the final minute to give up a huge offensive board. That one killed us. Forced us into a foul situation, checkmate. “I have to be better in that fourth quarter. I have to make myself more aware,” he said. Well, certainly love the self-awareness. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 9-16 shooting (4-5 from three) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He hit a jumper from the top of the key on the Lakers first possession. He drained a three from the top of the arc on the kickout. He missed a laying taking contact at the rim. He sank a wing three on the hit ahead from Kuzma in transition. He attacked from the wing and scored a layup (seemed fouled). He finished a lob out of a timeout. He got tapped on a turnaround in the post. Second Half: He missed a turnaround in the post. He sank a jumper at the top of the key working off a screen. He coughed it up in the backcourt unaware of the D on the inbounds. He swiped a ball, pushed it out and hit Randle for the dunk. He sank the open corner three on the swing-swing off Lopez’s initial post double. He attacked and fumbled the finish. He missed a sideline three. He sank a three straight away off the Randle kickout. He missed a face-up wing jumper. He attacked down the lane out of a timeout for the layup. He was blocked on a layup, score the other way.

Lopez -- -- “We weren’t us tonight,” Lopez said of the D and he said it was on him not setting the tone. We’ve been relying on him to close games lately. Luke didn’t go that way tonight and we got beat by the Mavs big. He was the only Laker with a positive +/- with a +7. He struggled from three, but had a lot more success in the post against the smaller defenders. The 5 assists show how much attention he was drawing from there. Luke put him and Isaiah on the floor a lot tonight. I think that will work better when you don’t have a floor spacer like Dirk out there. Brook can plug the paint and help. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-13 shooting (1-5 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 5 assists, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He missed a jumphook in the post, rushed it because he was in the paint a while. He backed Dirk down and drew FTs, he made one. He missed a corner three. He missed another rushed jumphook in the post. He sank a wing three. He missed an open three on a kickout. He attacked Dirk off the dribble and scored an And-1 layup, he made the FT. He was called for a charge in the post on a mismatch. Second Half: He missed an open three. He posted up and hit Hart for the three. He missed another open three. He drew a double in the post, kicked it out and we swung it to Ingram for the three (keep working the post against Dirk). Easy post score across the middle of the paint. Back to him and he scored a layup on the step-through in the post. He settled for a Dirk fade and missed in the post, can’t settle for that. He scored an And-1 layup when IT found him across court after drawing a couple defenders. He hit a floater over Dirk.

Hart -- -- Didn’t think he was very effective defensively tonight. We really missed that. You could also see those rebounding numbers were nowhere near what we’ve been getting from him. Hard to get those when we aren’t getting stops. He did hit this threes tonight, draining three of them on kickouts. One of the staples of our winning lately has been his strong two-way game. Didn’t get that tonight from the rook. He seemed a bit annoyed in the postgame interview. “We got to continue to communicate and keep playing hard on that end,” Hart said. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-7 shooting (3-6 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He sank a corner three on a relocation after giving the ball up to get it back. Bad pass expecting maybe a curl from Kuzma. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He sank a three from the top of the arc on a kickout. He sank a three on a kickout straight away. He missed a turnaround in the paint (always short on that because his balance is going backward). He missed a wing three. He missed a running three at the buzzer.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- I’m maybe a little too miffed at the FT shooting. KCP went to the line twice in the fourth quarter and only split them. Combined that with Randle missing a couple in one trip and Kuzma missing a couple on one trip in the second half. Those hurt. Not the reason we lost, but we needed those from KCP late in the fourth. KCP at least had some steals tonight and that led to bustouts. The Lakers needed more of that and less pulling the ball out of the hoop on defensive stands. A couple of those wild chucks from him despite the good shooting. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-8 shooting (2-5 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 4 assists, 3 steals and 4 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He swiped a pass under the hoop and then sank a pull-up 17-footer on the other end. He gambled for a steal, lost and gave up a dunk. He sank a three from the top of the arc on the other end. He didn’t hit rim on a wing three. He stepped in off a fly by and hit the 21-footer. Second Half:He took a pass in the lane and quickly went behind his back on a no-looker to Randle for the dunk. He grabbed a bad pass and took it for a dunk. He took a dribble left and sank a wing three. He was fouled on a pull-up 20-footer for FTs, he made one. He was fouled on a defensive board, he made just one FT. Wild chuck from three. He missed a corner three.

Thomas -- -- The bench was on its feet on his first touch a moment after entering the game and he drained a three. If this were last season, prior to the injury and Cavs fiasco, I’m sure most people would be extremely positive about Isaiah’s impact on the team. His first half tonight he led the team with 16 points on 5-8 shooting and 4 dimes, looking a bit like his old self. He was a +7 in the half. With the injury, he’s still trying to regain the explosion and bounce that’s key to his offensive game. In the second half, he wasn’t nearly as effective. The turnovers mounted as he sprayed passes around. We put the ball in his hands a ton and relied on him down the stretch. Probably a bit too early to do that, but we certainly weren’t getting stops on D to get out on the break, so we were in the halfcourt quite a bit. On the defensive end, it’s going to be tough. Smart teams are going to attack him. He’s a bit of a target on that end. Like Lou Williams and JC, can he make enough impact on offense to overcome the deficiencies on defense? Tonight we saw him picked on relentlessly. At times, it certainly looked like a 4 on 5 defensively. The D was atrocious with him or without him in this game, so can’t put it on him. (We sure could have used Nance, however.) “My mentality is to help this team in whatever role I am in,” he said prior to the game. The Lakers need an aggressive point guard for sure. Another role I think he can easily help the team is simply hitting FTs down the stretch as he’s a career 87.5% from the line. We just need someone we can pass the ball to for those intentional foul situations. And a lead, of course. He got robbed on a couple FTAs late in this game when he was attacking baseline and fouled. “I think it’s going to take a while for me to get to that MVP level I was playing last season,” he said prior to the game. Would love to see that guy return to form or this will most certainly be a very short stay in the purple and gold (might be regardless of how he plays…or we could strike out in free agency and try to give him a big short-term deal). He had a brick from three late in this game because he had to jump back a bit to get separation on a mismatch. Those are the plays we want to see disappear and get replaced by the old Isaiah. This season really has potential to go two entirely different ways from here on out with him on the roster -- scrappy or crappy. He could round into form and make the team even scrappier than we were as we have a closer and consistent weapon in the fourth. Or he could not and make the team even crappier than we were. Watered down offense and no D. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 7-12 shooting (4-8 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 6 assists, 1 steal, 6 turnovers and 5 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: Out of a timeout, he worked off the screens, took the pass and hit a wing three a few seconds after entering the game. He missed a pull-up three in transition. He drew FTs in transition, he made both. He threw a kickout away, dunk the other way. He sank a pull-up at the top of the key. He hit Kuzma in transition for the elbow pull-up. He drained a pull-up three in transition next time down. He missed a three, we got it back, he made a touch pass to Brewer under the hoop for a dunk. Off the mark on a lob pass. He crossed over a man and hit the wing three. He drained a three after we recovered a rebound and found him. He broke down the D, drew the help and dumped it to Julius for the easy score. He missed a good look at a wing three. He was stripped on a drive. Second Half: He missed a three. He was fouled on the perimeter for FTs, he made both. He drew a trap and found Lopez open for an And-1 on the other side of the floor. He split defenders, attacked the paint and scored the layup. Bad post entry pass, too high and out of bounds. Another turnover, looked hit coming off a screen with no call. Mavs posting him up it led to a flagrant at one point (weak call). He changed directions, attacked the paint and scored a layup in a crowd. He couldn’t get a defender off balance on a switch and bricked the three. He attacked baseline next time down and drew FTs (What? They didn’t give it to him). He attacked the paint and threw it away with a minute left.

Kuzma -- -- Double-double. While he only had 4 points on 2-7 shooting in the first half, he was active, pulling down 8 boards to go with a couple assists and a steal. He was killing in on the glass all night. He has that energy in him to get double-digit boards. We just need to see it with consistency. Love that it came out again tonight. Again, without Nance on the floor, he’s got to elevate his defensive effort and work. Looked like he was trying tonight, so I’m happy with the effort from him even if we still struggled a bit on D. It will be interesting watching him and Isaiah play on both ends. There were a couple sequences where IT was calling for the ball and Kuzma was like, nope. I’m taking it. (I think he hit on both of those, too.) Defensively, Kuz is going to have to elevate his activity and mobility to recover and help Isaiah’s breakdowns. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-12 shooting (2-5 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 15 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 32 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He hit Ingram ahead on the break for the three. He hit a floater down the lane. Great job on the boards. He sank a pull-up at the elbow in transition. He missed a jumphook on iso. He knocked a ball loose and recovered it. He hit Ingram for a lob. He missed a corner jumper. He missed a three. Second Half: He grabbed a loose ball, pushed it up and was fouled, he then missed both FTs. He pushed out a rebound and hit the pull-up three. He missed a floater in transition. He grabbed a board, pushed it out, gave it up, got it back and hit the three. He stepped out of bounds on a baseline drive. He grabbed an offensive board and hit the turnaround. He missed a deep three.

Brewer -- -- He had one of the highlight scores tonight in the first half on a sequence where three Lakers move the ball quickly until finding Brewer open under the hoop for the dunk. That was during a stretch where IT was dominating offensively and he hit Brewer with that touch pass. In the second half, Brewer had a couple miscues, giving up a bad foul on a late rotation and also fumbling away what looked like a sure layup. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 14 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He dunked off the touch pass from IT to him under the hoop. He was fouled crashing the glass to regain a possession. Second Half: He got caught in no man’s land on a late rotation to give up an And-1 layup with 3 seconds left. He fumbled away a sure layup.

Caruso -- -- With the addition of Thomas, I think we only see Caruso for no more than the 6 days remaining on his two-way, then he goes back to the G-League. We’ll see. The two-way contracts don’t count against the cap. I’m sure the Lakers would like to keep him there for next season, too, as their roster is in flux. We do miss his defense, so we’ll see how this plays out. The Stats: The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He came in for a defensive stand at the end of a quarter.

Zubac -- -- He came in with 48 seconds left in the third. Lakers were trying to give Randle a breather then. Frye wouldn’t have helped the D tonight but may have helped pull the Mavs big out of the paint down the stretch. Frye’s three shooting this season has fallen off a little. When you look at the stats, it’s only been at Quicken where he’s shooting .233 from three. On the road he’s shooting .426 from behind the arc. Hopefully, the bad shooting stays exclusively at the Q. The Stats: The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Walton -- -- Tough situation to try to introduce new players into the lineup. Luke threw Isaiah in the mix tonight and kept Frye on the bench… Down 8-5, he called a quick timeout… Score was 21-21 when the Mavs called a timeout. Lakers brought in IT for Hart with 5 minutes left… Up 5 when Kuzma came in for Lopez… Brewer in for KCP… A lot of threes falling for both teams… The Lakers led 36-34 after the first quarter… He started a Lopez, Kuzma, Brewer, Hart, Thomas lineup… Kuzma/Thomas helped pushed them out to a 45-36 lead to force a timeout… KCP in for Brewer, Lakers up 11 midway through the quarter… Lakers up 9 when the starters returned with Kuzma instead of Lopez… Quick timeout when they gave up a couple hoops and only led by 4… Lakers up by 4 still when IT came back in for Hart with 3 minutes left… Hart back in with a minute left for KCP… The Lakers led 66-65 at the half. The Lakers were 9-18 from three in the first half… Dallas went 5-5 to start the half… Both teams just trading hoops, no one getting stops… The score was tied 88-88 when the timeout came midway through the quarter. Out of that, we brought in Kuzma and IT for KCP and Lopez… Brewer in for Hart tied at 91-91 with 2 minutes left… Randle out with 48 seconds left down 2. Zubac in… Caruso in for Zubac with 14 seconds left on a deadball for D… The Lakers trailed 100-95 heading into the fourth… He started the Lopez, Kuzma, Brewer, KCP, Hart lineup… Down 8, timeout Luke as the Mavs are picking on Thomas on D… He brought in Ingram and Randle for Lopez and Brewer… They erased the Mavs lead and led by 1 when the Mavs called a timeout… Lakers getting worked by Kleber on both ends… Timeout down 6 with 53 seconds left… Lakers got a stop but gave up an offensive board with 25 seconds left down 4. That killed them for good…

Thanks DB. Tough loss - just a crappy performance by the Lakers on defense tonight. Hopefully Luke and the players fix the communication problems fast. I don't think small ball works automatically against every lineup either. I think Brook and Josh Hart would have helped down the stretch, but only if they continue to play and communicate like they can.

And 37 minutes is an awful lot for Randle. 30 works better.

Too bad the Lakers lost to the team with the worst record in the West. I hate the Mavs more than any other team besides Boston...

But I was encouraged with how IT played, it made me think the problem was NOT him, (as all Cavs players & fans would have you believe) but the Cavs system and hopefully he will thrive with the Lakers...

Boy IT is really bad defensively, you can’t blame him for poorly Hart, KCP, Randle and Brook played on that end though...Randle especially had multiple chances to box out and Challenge at the basket, the one time he really tried he got a facial from Dirk lol. I like what IT could bring off the bench offensively, but man...he doesn’t fit in with what we are doing here at all.

This game was a TERRIBLE defensive game. Shooters were left open outside and the Mavs KILLED the Lakers inside. That is a sure formula for losing. Thomas is TERRIBLE defensively and can't see over his defenders when making some passes.

I prefer Ingram running the point and getting more run than Thomas. I also like to see more playing time for Hart over Thomas. The Lakers must find a way to make up for Nance's defense. That is going to be sorely missed. Thomas adds more offensive fire power but at the expense of weaker team defense when he is playing. Luke needs to find a way to solve this issue--if it can be solved with the players the Lakers have.

PG would definitely provide both offensive fire power and much better defense. I don't think Thomas is in the Laker plans long term. I could be wrong but we shall see.

Pretty sure he's not. But I could see a scenario where the Lakers strike out in free agency and IT still hasn't proven to anyone he's quite returned to form and the Lakers need to punt cap space for a year. So they give him (and probably Brook) a larger 1-year deal to see if he can return to form.

Focus should be on PG13 and LBJ and trying to find a way to keep Randle.

Certainly not fair to throw the poor D we had all on Isaiah. He was a +7 in the first half and we still got smoked in that half. We were just awful when he was sitting and when we was out there.

But, yes, we're going to have our work cut out for us trying to deal with the target on his back on the D end.

I'm more disappointed in the play of some of our guys who sucked when IT was sitting. IT I expect issues.

We left him in too long in that third. He clearly needed a breather. He can play more than 30, though. Maybe 32-34 range.

Seems George doing a 1+1 at a discount would do the trick (and then he could recoup by getting the ten head max).

The team has no one to replace Nance and it show immediately.
However that is why we get a FRP-- Thomas/Frye are not going to produce as much as Nance/JC this season.

“We stopped communicating. I’m not sure why, but it was simple,” Luke said of the defense, especially the switches. “Things we’ve been doing really well. Things we’ve been doing all year long, we stopped doing tonight.”

Going into the game I could just see this happening with Nance gone.

Defensively, we struggled all night and never had the Mavs on their heels. “It started with me and Josh,” Randle said of the defensive issues. He said they weren’t talking, weren’t getting stops. Those two definitely need to set the tone defensively. “We got to get back to defending,” Randle said.

Very happy to hear Randle say that. The point in which he starts to care as much or more about how the TEAM is defending as he is about other parts of his individual game, is the moment he becomes irreplaceable. Between the amount of energy he spends on the boards and on offense and his generally not having a great defensive awareness it's difficult to expect him to really captain the defense. But I would love to see him spend more of his energy doing that and continue to grow in that area.

Thanks DB

I felt Luke kinda regressed a tad...by that I mean the way he coached reminded me of earlier this year when he just put guys in at certain points of the game regardless of situation (the autosubbing)

Specifically I was like...dude, we need defense, anytime we just try to outscore a team we generally lose. I thought leaving IT in so deep into the 4th was just a bad move and did not help at all. Would have been ok with the loss if we at least tried to have our good defenders out there (even if they were off).

Just my 2 cents. IT can score and is good for that but when we need d...right now, just bench him.

Mental issues. I think the young Lakers became cocky and thought they can have this game against the worst team no matter how. Can't do that, not there yet. They came in unprepared, unfocused and paid the price. Another lesson to learn.

Thanks, DB!

Hopefully we are not looking to include LBJ. I fear he is diminishing returns for this team. Our luck is we get him and he starts to breakdown. PG13 is good enough for me. One this year and maybe another next year--unless Boogie Cousins rehab goes exceptionally well. Boogie and PG13 works for me.

Crap! We need to waive Ennis and soon! Desperately need a wing right now to limit Brewer's minutes. Also, so we could have Caruso for the rest of the season.

This is a game I would have run a clutch line up of:
Ingram, Hart, Kuzma, Randle, Lopez

We got killed by their bigs in the clutch.

Thank btw DB!

Never felt we were getting any traction in this game and it was hard to watch.

Reminded me of the Orlando game where we were leaving people open for 3 pointers and they were making them.

IT will be fun to watch

Is Randle getting the double team going to be a new thing? Should leave others open.

BI had another strong game offensively but where were the rebounds and assists?

No Nance, no Defense?

I think it's too early to tell, but it's predictable we lose some defensive efficiency, IT is an even worse defender than JC (that's quite an accomplishment) and Nance was important for team defense. That said, in theory, with this trade, what we lose defensively, we can win it offensively, IT can be a much better offensive player than JC...
