There is no doubt the trade not happening is giving him reasons to be negative towards the Lakers, that bitter taste sits well till this day.

No news. He would be traded for Big Game James and Elden Campbell. And he already told this story of playing drunk some years ago.

I doubt he was close. His agent told him that. BFD. The Sixers no doubt had an offer from at least 20 teams. They waited and waited while Chuck ruined their power to get fairly equivalent value. He was an absolute moron in his end days in Philly. I wouldn't be surprised if they just chose to send him to a non-Laker team out West at the end of the day. No team wants to send their superstar here willingly and take all the heat while he dominates in a huge media market. We tried to trade Eddie Jones to Minny for Googz!!! and Kevin Lurch refused even though he knew Googs was gonna walk (which he did). Lurch said, "I didn't WANNA deal with the Lakers!" That's real. Clips haven't traded with us since 1983 and never will again unless they fleece us. Pacers are probably now an enemy. The owners' contempt when we tried to acquire CP...

Beyond that, we tried to trade Worthy + to HOU when Hakeem was battling his owner. Called the guy a coward in the media. They patched that up. I don't mind Worthy retiring a Laker, frankly, but we kept him and the FO gave him a backloaded deal for past services rendered. Both he and Magic were still earning millions from such deals after they retired. We didn't get out of that until 96. Nice that the Lakers do that kind of thing, but it hamstrings your flexibility. That's probably a big reason why West was perceived as "patient" in the 90s. We got Del and Ced on the cheap in 94/5 and got NVE to re-ink to a cheap contract and had a good rookie. Even West was lucky to get those moves done. Everything opened up in 96.
