All Star Break…Finally… The Lakers slumped into the All Star Break with another loss tonight. It was at least a more entertaining game.

The second unit pushed out to a 15-point lead in the first half. Ivica Zubac sparking the team off the bench and leading team in scoring in the half. He was cleaning up the glass and making himself available for passes. He’d finish the game with 19 points on 8-8 shooting.

The TWolves caught the Lakers at halftime, but the starters pushed out to a double-digit lead in the third.

In the fourth quarter, the game bogged down. The Lakers sent the TWolves to the line 15 times. They lost their pace, coughed up the ball 5 times and then had to deal with Jimmy Butler down the stretch.

“They got some big time closers on that team,” Luke said.

Butler took control of the game with a series of scores and some key defensive stops and the Lakers fell 119-111.

Randle -- -- The most consistent part of his game this season has been just how physical he plays night in, night out. It doesn’t seem like a game goes by where someone on the opposition is on the ground in pain. Occasionally, it will result in an offensive foul. But guys know they played a game after battling Julius for a night. We need that from both of our bigs. He was a board shy of the double-double tonight, but led the Lakers in scoring. We tried to put Jules on Towns more tonight because he spaces the floor. So Towns had just 10 points, but meanwhile Gibson went off for 28. Better job by the starters tonight. The Stats: He scored 23 points on 8-15 shooting (0-1 from three, 7-9 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 6 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -17. The Action: He attacked the paint, stopped as his man went flying and then dunked. He pushed it up, stopped in the middle of the paint, up-faked and scored a layup. He pushed it up court, posted up and hit the jumphook in the middle of the paint. His pass was picked off. He stripped a man on help, took a pass on the break and scored in the post. He gave up an offensive board that led to an And-1. He missed a layup on the screen-roll, should have had that. He was stripped under the hoop and fouled. He missed a three. Great help D read to swipe a pass. He was stripped in the paint. Second Half: He missed a jumphook in the post. He was hacked in transition for FTs, he made both. He missed a jumphook on the baseline. He drew FTs getting strip-fouled in the paint, he made both. He faked KCP into throwing a pass where he used to be, turnover. He grabbed a board on a miss under the hoop and powered in an And-1, he made the FT. He was fouled on the defensive glass for FTs, he made one. He attacked down the middle of the paint to his left and scored the layup. He posted up, drew the help D and dished to Zubac under the hoop for the dunk. Great D on Crawford on iso to force a miss on a fading midrange jumper after a series of moves. He took a pass, got contact and scored a layup. He drew FTs getting trapped on the sideline, he made one. He attacked with the shotclock low and was called for the charge (probably should have taken the three on that). He battled for a loose ball, got it and missed a jumphook in the crowd. He was blocked from behind on a dunk. He attacked off the three line and scored a layup.

Ingram -- -- The point guard stuff really does not work well at times. There’s ball stopping, but he’s also missing passes as guys come off screens and that puts a wrench in the sets. It bogs down the offense and the clock ticks. A lot of late shotclock attempts in this one for the Lakers. Ingram had the team-low -22. He had just 2 turnovers, but both were preventable and the kind of thing that drives you mad with how it seems to happen every game lately. He had another turnover on an awful post entry pass (bad angle...someone help him, please) and another where he lost it in the backcourt under pressure. I have no doubt all the ballhandling and responsibility is helping him grow, but man, we really need Ball back for some of this (and on defense, as well). Defensively, I really wish he’d hit the boards a little harder. Against good teams, we’ve got to win as many possession as possible. When he goes back there to rebound, his size is impressive. It also helps out with the Lakers being able to then pushout in transition. Pretty good job from the line tonight. He was looking mostly automatic from there. Form looks great. He should have been to the line more, but the refs were letting a lot go against him. (Meanwhile the TWolves were getting the line at will in the fourth.) Some more of the midrange stuff that's a bit forced but I like that, scoring wise, this seems like an average game for him now. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-14 shooting (0-2 from three, 5-7 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 5 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a -22. The Action: He up-faked, leaned in to try to draw contact, didn’t, but still swished the 15-footer. He attacked in transition, was tied up but threw up a prayer and it went in. He was blocked on a drive. He missed a pull-up at the FT line, not a great look. He drew FTs on a baseline jumper, he made one. He coughed up the ball in the backcourt again after taking an inbounds, turnover. He attacked and wasn’t close on the finish. He attacked and drew FTs on the perimeter, he made both. He attacked baseline and no-looked to Hart cutting for a layup. Another awful post entry pass, turnover (horrible angle again). He faced up and missed a midrange jumper. Horrible transition D to give up a dunk. Second Half: He missed a pull-up after ball stopping. Nice defensive board and he pushed out the break. He attacked the pressure D, took contact in the middle of the paint with no call and scored the layup anyway. He cleaned up a missed drive in transition. He missed a three trying to beat the shotclock. He drew FTs in transition off a good passing sequence from rebound to guard to Ingram, he made both. He was fouled twice on a drive with no call and missed. He missed a three on a kickout. He attacked right, took contact and hit the And-1, he missed the FT. He crossed over, went down the middle of the paint and dunked.

Lopez -- -- Bleh. The Lakers were down just 1 when he came in for the final few minutes for Zubac. Anyone’s game. We just lack a closer. It doesn’t help when we park him on the perimeter all the time. All of his attempts from three in this game. That’s just dumb. Partly as a result, he was thoroughly outplayed by all the bigs on both clubs. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-5 shooting from three to go with 2 boards, 1 block and 4 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He swished a three on an inbounds pass. He swished a wing three on the pick and pop. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He gave up an offensive board and foul. He missed a three. Second Half: He blocked a drive. Bad D sagging back too far to give up an open look. He missed a break rhythm sideline three, why take that? He got KAT to try to clear-out with an off-arm on a drive to get a stop and send him to the sideline with his fourth foul.

Hart -- -- He struggled from the perimeter and had his hands full defensively with Butler. In the second half, he was able to get to the rim for some scores. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-10 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 4 boards, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He took a bad pass in the paint and hit the short one. He cut off BI’s drive and scored the layup. He missed a three on a swing pass. He grabbed an offensive board but wasn’t close on the finish. Second Half: He swiped the ball in the post, pushed out and missed, but Ingram cleaned it up. He missed a three next time down. He couldn’t finish against contact on an inbounds, but Julius cleaned it up. He attacked off the three line strong to his left and scored the layup. He took a pass in transition, attacked strong and finished left. He missed a wing three on a good look in early offense. He gave up a lob dunk ballwatching. Bad foul from three trailing Butler.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Strong game from KCP. He was doing a bit of everything. He had 10 points and 5 assists in the first half. He found himself open twice from three after trying to look for someone to pass to in transition, so he knocked down both of those. He hit the boards hard all night. Love seeing that from our guards. We miss it with Lonzo out. He was also moving the ball, even on those two makes from three in the first half, he was looking to find teammates. Just a very good balance to his game and effort tonight. More of this, please. The Lakers were a -10 in the 7 minutes he was not on the court tonight. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-9 shooting (3-6 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 11 boards, 6 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 41 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a good look at a corner three to start the game. He set up Lopez for a three on the pick and pop. He was looking for someone to pass to as he brought the ball up, stopped at the three line wide open and hit. He attacked and bounced to Zubac rolling for a score. Again, looking to pass in transition, he pivoted at the three line, surveying the floor, realized he was open and hit the three. He backdoored his man and IT lobbed to him for the dunk. He missed a three on a kickout. He tipped in a miss between a couple defenders. Second Half: He moved in off the three line and hit the pull-up on the baseline after the fly by. He sank a wing three on a kickout. He iso’d with the shotclock low, up-faked from deep, stepped in and took the contact to draw three FTs, he made two. He missed a leaning three curling off the screen (not sure what his percentage is on that when we call his number, but seems low). He swiped a ball but fumbled away a sure layup.

Thomas -- -- He couldn’t finish anything. The only advantage was that we were able to clean up his dribble penetration. Just shows the value of someone able to collapse the D. He had a few nice passes (lob to KCP, dish to Brewer cutting, and a drive and dish to Zubac for the score), as well, but too many turnovers. Kuzma bailed him out on a couple of assists where Isaiah got caught in the air to shoot, the D recovered and he had to find someone. Just inefficient on the scoring, whether at the rim or from deep tonight. When we brought him back to close the game, it was more of the same. Meanwhile, Butler took control for the TWolves to win the game down the stretch. Defensively, actually a serviceable game from him. He had a steal under the hoop on a rotation and wasn’t picked on. Good first stint tonight to help the team push out to their biggest lead, but the bench dropped the ball in the second half. “They slowed the pace up, which we didn’t want,” Isaiah said of the fourth quarter. He said he’s hitting the gym during the time off. “I’m gonna work all break,” he said. Hopefully, he comes back stronger. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-15 shooting (0-5 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 1 board, 5 assists, 1 block, 5 turnovers and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He was blocked on a jumper on iso, then scored on at the other end. He went up for a shot but hit Kuzma for a three instead. Kuzma helped him out again on another jump pass for a three. He missed a drive but Zubac cleaned it up. No help D and we gave up a dunk. He pushed it up court and hit the pull-up at the FT line. He made a tech FT. He missed a wing three, a little forced. He attacked, missed and Zubac dunked it back in. He attacked and hit Brewer cutting for the reverse. He hit Zubac rolling for FTs. Short on a pull-up in transition at the three line. He took the extra pass from Kuzma, attacked the paint and hit Zubac for the layup. He got a switch and missed a long three. He hit KCP cutting backdoor with a perfect lob for a dunk. He attacked and was rejected on a drive. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He attacked baseline and scooped in a layup between defenders. Second Half: He stepped on the baseline on a probe. He broke down the D and missed a layup but Brewer cleaned it up. He looked fouled on a drive but lost the ball. He attacked and missed a layup. Great help D to swipe a ball from a big under the hoop to prevent a sure score. He tracked a big and scored a layup. He got into the paint and his pass was picked off trying to hit Randle rolling. He missed a three on a kickout. He was blocked on what looked like a sure layup. He was stripped in transition trying to attack with a minute left, turnover.

Kuzma -- -- Just clanking away from three for most of the night. Add in a couple of bad miscues defensively and we got just about nothing from him tonight. No rebounding, either. He and Isaiah are the bench right now for the Lakers. They sputtered in that second half stint and we paid the price. The time off will do him some good. Hopefully, he gets a lot of rest after tomorrow’s game. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-12 shooting (2-9 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He missed a corner three on a kickout. He sank a three straight away on the pick and pop. He bailed out Isaiah again with a three off his jump pass. He took an inbounds pass and hit the baseline jumper. He airballed a three on an inbounds. Second Half: He got tapped on a kickout to the corner. He was stripped in transition. Not close on a kickout from the corner on his next shot. He missed a three straight away, wide open. Not close on a drive left. He stripped a man in the paint. He let a guard get past him in transition for a layup after a made basket, Luke called a timeout on that one and sat him. He missed a three on a kickout. He bricked another three.

Brewer -- -- He’s usually like Vegas. You get on a run with him, feel good about things, go back to it later and lose everything you had won. He led the Lakers with the +14, mainly off a great first half. He missed some of the second unit issues in the second half, but was in on a big play that hurt. With the shotclock low and the ball out of bounds, he fouled before the ball inbounded to give up an FT and reset the shotclock. That became a 4-point possession for the TWolves in the heart of the battle. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-6 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a +14. The Action: He attacked in transition, took all kinds of contact and somehow hit the runner (should have been an And-1). He missed a reverse but Zubac cleaned it up. He reversed cutting off IT’s drive to take a pass. He picked a man from behind in transition to get a stop. He iso’d and missed a fade from 15 feet, not a good look. Second Half: He cleaned up the dribble penetration miss by Isaiah. He attacked, spun and was blocked. Bad foul before a ball was inbounded to give up an automatic FT and reset the low shotclock (ended up a 4-point sequence).

Zubac -- -- “I was working hard all year for my chance,” Ivica said. One of the bright spots tonight. He led the Lakers with 13 points in the first half on 6-6 shooting to go with 7 boards. The difference between how he rebounds and how Lopez does hasn’t been more apparent than this one. He had 4 putbacks in the first half, but also kept the TWolves to one and out possessions. He’d finish with 11 boards in 20 minutes. Lopez with 2 in 26. Painful disparity between the two. That offensive glass work helped the Lakers push out to their biggest lead in the first half. Love that activity. Defensively, he played the angles well, challenged at the rim and controlled the defensive glass. He also runs the pick and roll well, whether pulling defenders with him or attacking himself. He gives Isaiah a big, open target when they run it. “He wasn’t penciled in for that many minutes but he earned the minutes he got,” Luke said. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 8-8 shooting (3-6 from the line) to go with 11 boards (4 offensive), 1 turnover and 1 foul in 20 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He cleaned up a missed drive by IT. He tipped in an airball floater from Kuzma. He cleaned up a missed reverse by Brewer. He threw down a putback jam off IT’s drive and miss. He drew FTs on a dunk attempt off the bounce pass from IT, he made one. He took a bounce pass on the roll, stopped, pivoted and hit the jumphook. Great passing sequence ended with IT dishing to Zubac under the hoop for the finish. He hit the floor for a loose ball on the sideline. Second Half: He got tapped on an And-1 finish attempt on the roll with 1.9 left in the quarter, he made one FT. He took an inbounds and hit the 14-footer with the shotclock low. Nice job going vertical to get a stop. He dunked when Randle posted up, drew his man and fed Zubac under the hoop. He was fouled on the offensive glass for FTs, he made just one again.

Walton -- -- Better start by the starting unit tonight… Kuzma in for Lopez, Thomas in for KCP, Lakers up 4 with 5 minutes left… A 9-0 run and Luke called a timeout down 4… Brewer in, Zubac in , Randle and Ingram out… They rallied back (Zubac cleaning up on the offensive glass, Kuzma hitting from the perimeter)… The Lakers led 40-35 after the first quarter… He started a Zubac, Kuzma, Brewer, KCP, Thomas lineup… They extended to an 11-point lead, forcing a timeout… Up 15, he sat Brewer and Kuzma for Randle and Ingram… Up 11, timeout a minute later with 5 minutes left in the half… He brought in the rest of the starters out of that with IT instead of Hart… IT out for Hart, Lakers up 9 with 4 minutes left... Crappy play again by the starters on both ends to close the half… The Lakers led 65-62 at the half. The TWolves shot 55%... The starters methodically pushed out to a 12-point lead… Randle out for Kuzma out of that timeout… Ingram out for IT up 12… Zubac in for Lopez with 2 minutes left, up 10… The lead was trimmed to 6 and Luke called a timeout with 46 seconds left… Brewer in for Hart… The Lakers led 91-84 heading into the fourth… He started Zubac, Kuzma, Brewer, Ingram and IT… Timeout up by 1. He went with a Zubac, Randle, Hart, KCP, Thomas lineup. Kuzma not playing well… Up 1 when IT sat for Ingram midway through the quarter… Lopez in for Zubac with 4:50 left, Lakers down 1… Butler dominating us down the stretch… IT back in with 4 minutes left for Hart down 6… Lakers floundering in the final minutes… Luke said they will spend some of the time off, looking at how to integrate the new guys for the final 25 games…

I definitely think the back 2 back kinda threw us off in the 4th.... it’s not a excuse but even the good teams lose these type of games.... maybe this long week layoff will help install new energy and focus

Thanks DB. I agree - All-Star break, finally.

Is there any chance Zubac will actually get consistent playing time as a backup center for the Lakers?

Here's hoping for a renewed squad with Lonzo back come Friday of next week.

Ingram and Kuzma haven't yet acquired the experience, expertise, body and the needed mental toughness to be the closer or Superstar (in waiting)

Randle provided another audition to display what his value will be during this off-season - is he an All Star (in waiting) that deserves to have a Max Contract or a good to very good player that has yet proven that he can consistently perform at a high level/All-Star level against elite players

Hart seems to be that "Glue Guy" that is always in the right place and generally makes good decisions.

Have a great vacation!!!!!!

Bad game for Ingram. Couldn't play point effectively. Too much dribbling, ball stopping and bad passes.

Lopez was a non-factor. Completely invisible.

Great to see Zubac playing well, though.

Zubac needed to show Luke a reason to play him. He really hasn't gotten any minutes this year and definitely seems like a guy who needs consistent PT to get the best out of himself. The small variety of opportunities he has had IN-GAME this year, he honestly didn't impress me AT ALL and I'm a big fan (bordering on Stan) but this game may have been just what he needed to get his flow and confidence back. He definitely looked good. Even if we can only find him 8-10 minutes, there is no reason to not try and see what he has. Could be a guy to use going forward now that we lost Larry's hustle, or could develop into a small trade chip. Hell, Hernangomez netted two 2nd Rd picks.

We will likely not hear from him again until next year. Luke likes little guys at the 5.
